Bonus feature - British wolverines? Our first guest Darren was asked to despatch a troublesome fox in south Wales in 1998. In the snowy conditions he actually saw a puma though his gun sights – he re-lives the high emotions on the winter hillside as bright green eyeshine stared back. Rick and Darren also consider the prospects of a big cat being trapped, and they discuss an event in 2011, when the police and the Home Office verified a plaster cast as from a puma-like big cat.For our second guest we return to Exmoor Zoo, meeting owner Danny Reynolds. He briefs us on the new female black leopard, Bagheera. She is a lively three year old, who enjoys playful stalking of the visitors and keepers.Exmoor Zoo also hosts two wolverines, last known in Britain 8,000 years ago, or has this podcast found that they are back somehow? We discuss some footage which might hold the clues, with some extracted stills on the Big Cat Conversations website. Danny and Rick discuss the traits of wolverines, a big type of mustelid, both in the wild and at the zoo. Words of the week: talon & Gulo gulo26 March 2025

Happy 2024! We open the year talking about Yahtzee, which Alex calls dice poker, a Jimmy Hoffa update, and Bagheera very much makes his presence known. We also debate the definition of a den. Clara tries to bring Justice to Stella Liebeck. Alex tells us about 5 lawsuits she has feelings about. Turns out only 4 because #5 was Stella. Sorrz about the static, and Alex's mic just refusing to work. We'll never leave Clara's house again.

Ayeesha Menon takes Rudyard Kipling's family classic and gives it a darker twist, re-imagining it in the concrete jungle of present-day India. A gangland coming-of-age fable.Mowgli, the orphan boy at the centre of the story, is being brought up by "the Wolves", a gang of petty criminals in a tenement block in Mumbai and quickly learns how to survive in that world. But when the villainous politician, Tiger Khan threatens Mowgli's life, two residents of the tenement block, "black panther" Bagheera and the "bear" Baloo, offer to help him escape and he embarks on a journey of self-discovery through the city, meeting "creatures" along the way who don't always have his best interests at heart.
Maybe your idea of spiders is a bit like mine was. You probably know that they have eight legs, that some are hairy. Perhaps you imagine them spending most of their time sitting in their webs—those classic-looking ones, of course—waiting for snacks to arrive. Maybe you consider them vaguely menacing, or even dangerous. Now this is not all completely inaccurate—spiders do have eight legs, after all—but it's a woefully incomplete and drab caricature. Your idea of spiders, in other words, may be due for a refresh. My guest today is Dr. Ximena Nelson, Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Canterbury, in New Zealand. Ximena is the author of the new book, The Lives of Spiders. It's an accessible and stunningly illustrated survey of spider behavior, ecology, and cognition. In this conversation, Ximena and I do a bit of ‘Spiders 101'. We talk about spider senses—especially how spiders use hairs to detect the minutest of vibrations and how they see, usually, with four pairs of eyes. We talk about web-making—which, by the way the majority of spiders don't do—and silk-making—which all do, but for more reasons than you may realize. We talk about how spiders hunt, jump, dance, pounce, plan, decorate, cache, balloon, and possibly count. We talk about why so many spiders mimic ants. We take up the puzzle of “stabilimenta”. We talk about whether webs constitute an extended sensory apparatus—like a gigantic ear—and why spiders are an under-appreciated group of animals for thinking about the evolution of mind, brain, and behavior. Alright friends, this one is an absolute feast. So let's get to it. On to my conversation with Dr. Ximena Nelson. Enjoy! A transcript of this episode will be available soon. ON A TUER HOMARD !

Set in Central India, Mowgli is raised by a pack of wolves. Along the way he encounters memorable characters such as the foreboding tiger Shere Kahn, Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear. Including other stories such as that of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, a heroic mongoose and Toomai, a young elephant handler, Kipling's fables remain as popular today as they ever were. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/librivox1/support

In 'Mowgli's Brothers', a young boy (Mowgli) is taken in and raised by wolves in the jungles of India, learning all the lessons in life from those animals who befriended him, including his father and mother, Bagheera the panther, and Baloo the Bear. This is the first story of Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book', one of the most popular books of all time. Try the new "Tales of Escape & Suspense"- links below! Pourtant, Izzeldin écrit son livre, I shall not hate (Je ne haïrai point). Sex, drugs and rock'n'roll.

Walt dies in this one, so the history section is long and complicated because Walt was extremely petty and couldn't help screwing people over (both family and employees), even until his final breath. Walt's brother wasn't much better, he just decided to commit tax fraud primarily. Alex and Terra discuss if tickets sold or money made is the best way to judge the popularity of movies. Terra gives a very brief overview of Rudyard Kipling, one of our guests asks if there are wolves in India, and Alex remarks upon the obvious whiteness of all the voice actors and explains imperialism. Our hosts welcome the return of their dear friend, the cultural content warning, and dig into what that could POSSIBLY be in reference to throughout this movie set in the jungles of India. Terra doesn't necessarily ship Baloo and Bagheera, they just are getting major divorced dad vibes from this relationship. Our hosts argue about the ending and if it makes any logical sense at all (it doesn't, Terra is correct, don't listen to Alex). Terra praises Baloo's character animation, then Alex says she thinks the movie looks good, a statement that catches Terra off guard and prompts a discussion of the ways this movie could look even better. Terra praises Shere Khan's vibes and Alex highlights how little of a threat he actually is, which undercuts the stakes of the film writ large. Ultimately, The Beatles would have made this movie better if they were here. Originally recorded Jan 2022. The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling audiobook. This classic children's book by Rudyard Kipling tells the story of Mowgli, a young boy raised by wolves: his escapades and adventures with his dear friends Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear, his capture by the Monkey-People, his attempt at reintegration into human society, and his ultimate triumph over the lame tiger Shere Khan. The account of Mowgli's adventures is followed by several short stories, including the tales of the brave white seal, Kotick, and the tenacious mongoose, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. Packed with adventure and Jungle Law wisdom, this book has pervaded popular culture as the basis of many film and stage adaptations, including the popular Disney movie, and through its adoption as a motivational book by the Cub Scouts.
The Simple Sophisticate - Intelligent Living Paired with Signature Style
The British culture is varied and vast and while one person's affection for the culture may include punk rock along with their love for the Beatles, another's affinities may gravitate toward the gardening and afternoon tea. While my predilections lean more toward the latter, whenever a culture speaks to us that is not the one in which we grew up in or were raised entirely, we owe it to ourselves to continue to explore because our intuition is speaking. As many readers of TSLL and listeners of the podcast know, TSLL derives much of its content from two cultures, the French and the British, specifically the ways of life that invite us to slow down, savor and invest in quality moments and approaches rather than quantity and superficial living to gain approval. Instead the only approval we seek is from within. In episode #144 I shared 20 ways for welcoming the French culture into your everyday life, and so it is well overdue that I should share a similar list for welcoming the British culture into your everyday life. After having now visited London on three separate occasions and the English countryside on two separate occasions, I enjoyed compiling this list as my life in Bend is a marriage of both my love of the French and British culture, incorporating from both the everyday rituals I love, savoring approaches, tastes, décor and ways of life that reminds me of two cultures that tickle my curiosity and nurture my true self most sincerely. Inspired by my most recent visit, but also drawing upon all of my experiences and fortunate opportunities to explore Britain, let's take a look at how we can welcome different ideas into our everyday life the British culture. ~Note to readers: Be sure to listen to the episode as each item listed below is discussed in much more detail in the audio version. 1. Create a tea ritual in your everyday routine The feline host at The Rookery in London, Bagheera, joined us for our morning tea. 2. Grow a garden no matter how large or small your outdoor space or balcony Touring gardens was a primary focus on this most recent trip, and Sissinghurst Castle Gardens inspired many ideas as well as soothed the mind and being as I wandered the grounds for hours. 5. Invite others to 'tea' at your home or for a Cuppa 6. Celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee this year ~Have you entered the Grand Giveaway for your chance to win Fortnum & Mason's Jubilee Hamper? Acquire a high quality umbrella (and use it when it rains) ~James Smith & Sons in London on New Oxford was a must-stop during my recent trip to London. 13. Layer with pillows, let go of matchy-matchy Instead keep in the same color tone, and mix large and small prints with the occasional solid. 14. Find time to spend time at the oceanside 15. Make and enjoy scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam 16. Sausages, back bacon (not a crispy version, but rather more hearty as it consists of a little bit of the loin and is smoked), eggs, tomatoes - pan seared and seasoned with salt and pepper, mushrooms, fried bread, and beans. 21. Practice your French Did you know that the Queen looks over the weekly menu given to her by the chef who writes the menu in French, as has every chef dating back to Queen Victoria's reign? Yep, and just another lovely reason to incorporate both cultures in some way into your daily life. :) 22. Practice thoughtful manners Give personal space (an arm's length distance), use both a fork and knife when dining, don't ask nosey questions, please and thank you, respect the queue, refrain from superlatives (i.e. the best, greatest, worst, tallest, shortest, most exciting, etc.) 23. Welcome trays into your everyday for serving tea, meals, courses, etc. ~Be sure to enter this giveaway to win a high quality, handmade rectangular tray with glass top. 25. Enjoy daily walks with your pups and say hello to passing pups During this trip walking was done both in the heart of London (seen here with Big Ben in the background) and in the English countryside as we toured Sissinghurst Castle Garden. This photo was captured after just having departed from The Tube in the morning on our way to Westminster Abbey, followed by a visit to The National Gallery and then to Claridge's for Afternoon Tea. Needless to say, Norman was missed, and our reunion upon arriving back in Bend was quite sweet. Enjoy English tea at home in Bend, Oregon, with Norman as my companion. Bliss. We have been in this pandemic for 2 years now and its starting to feel like the new normal. Mask mandates, stores closing, people out of work for a year or more during this time. Its been 2 years and there's seemingly no end in the near future. On this episode Pharaoh, Bagheera, J and I talk about our personal experiences with covid and how it affected us and our families, as well as our opinions on how the US government handled and should handle the current pandemic. And of course we had to drag a few people while doing it. Don't forget to leave a comment and tell us how do you feel about the topics in this episode. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
From The Jungle Book it's night time and Baloo, Bagheera and Mowgli are settling down to sleep but Mowgli pleads for a bedtime story. Listen to see if you recognise the story Baloo tells him.
From The Jungle Book Kaa the python is hungry and comes across Mowgli in the jungle and fancies him as a snack. He manages to hypnotise him. Can he eat him before anyone saves him or do Baloo and Bagheera come by in the nick of time? Listen to find out if Mowglis friends save him and, if so, how they do it.
From The Jungle Book we come across Baloo, Bagheera and Mowgli in the middle of the jungle in a nice shady spot. Baloo and Bagheera are ready for a nap in the afternoon sun but they can't convince Mowgli it is a good idea.
Two stories today. The first one is from The Jungle Book where we come across Mowgli teaching Bagheera the panther how to be a bear. The second is from Mickey Mouse and Huey, Dewey and Louie try to confuse Uncle Donald by all wearing green for St Patrick's Day.
This week we watched Disney's first ever live-action adaptation of their animated classic, "THE JUNGLE BOOK," starring Jason Scott Lee as the wild boy Mowgli who is raised in the Indian jungle and learns to respect and survive the dangers of his surroundings. This version of The Jungle Book might be missing it's talking animals but it still creates a romantic, adventurous story that will keep your attention the whole time. Mowgli encounters an old friend from his childhood named Kitty but he is swiftly captured by officers of the British Army, lead by Capt. William Boone, who is portrayed by Cary Elwes in a truly villainous role that takes some getting used to. When the officers find a jeweled dagger on Mowgli, they are determined to find the rest of the treasure and so begins the process of reintroducing Mowgli to "civilized" society. But the more Mowgli learns about what it is to be a man, the more he longs to return to his Jungle home with it's simple law: "Kill only to eat or prevent from being eaten." Along with the help of his animal companions, Baloo the Bear, Bagheera the Panther and Grey Wolf, Mowgli will learn about his place in the world. A truly well constructed film from the director of "THE MUIMMY" and "THE MUMMY RETURNS." We hope you enjoy. Be sure to vote on what we watch/review next week: INSPECTOR GADGET - Based upon the cartoon series of the same name, a naive and law-abiding security guard is forced into critical condition and thanks to a new law-enforcement program, is given a body full of useless gadgetry to help maintain the law. He's always on duty. Starring Matthew Broderick as the titular lead. OR FLUBBER - Robing Williams plays an absent-minded professor who discovers a new compound he calls Flubber, which, in addition to being sentient and goofy and bouncy, is able to cause vehicles to fly. Filled with fun slapstick and plenty of quintessential Robin Williams to go around.
