PAUSE (People of Albany United for Safe Energy), the 350.org affiliate in the Capital District, will observe its 10th anniversary with an event at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 85 Chestnut St., Albany, on Thursday Feb. 29 at 6 PM. PAUSE is best known for opposing the oil bomb trains that were traveling to the Port of Albany. The event will feature and a movie about Greta Thurnberg. John Hall is a founding member of the band Orleans and one of the main instigators of the No Nukes and MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) movements. He's been intimately involved in promoting social change and environmental advocacy, both as a private citizen and as an elected representative in Congress. John was studying piano at 5, playing French horn, guitar bass and drums by 12. He started playing in the clubs of Greenwich Village by 18 and at 21 wrote and directed music for a Broadway and Off-Broadway play. He then worked on numerous projects including Seals and Crofts' album Down Home. He toured with Taj Mahal and when he came home, started the band that would become Orleans in 1972. Moving to Woodstock NY with his wife Johanna, the pair began writing together. They had major hits ‘Dance With Me' and ‘Still The One', songs that have garnered 9 million terrestrial airplays and hundreds of millions of streams. John has also co-written songs for Janis Joplin, Millie Jackson, Bonnie Raitt, The Tymes, Chaka Khan and Chet Atkins among others. He co-founded the group Musicians United for Safe Energy and helped organise the 1979 No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden. His song 'Power' was its anthem, performed and recorded there by the Doobie Brothers with James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, Carly Simon, Nicolette Larson, Phoebe Snow, and many more. That song was also sung by Peter Paul and Mary, Pete Seeger and others. John's guitar playing was featured on albums by Browne, Raitt, Carly Simon, Little Feat and more. In the 90s the John Hall Band recorded two LPs: Search Party and All Of The Above, which contained the AOR and MTV staple Crazy (Keep On Fallin').  Environmental activism led John to serve on several boards. In 2006 he was elected to the US House of Representatives and also served on the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. Returning to private life in 2011, John continued to perform and record with Orleans and as a solo artist. During the pandemic, he wrote and recorded songs for his latest CD “Reclaiming My Time.” John Hall joins us this week as special guest to share the stories (and the music) from his life. Whether you call him Miami Steve, Little Steven, Steve or Stevie, the Rock and Roll Consigliere joins me via Zoom for an all-encompassing conversation about his new book, "Unrequited Infatuation," and the many stories he tells in it, and then some. John Hall co-founded Orleans in 1972 and has played a key part in the band, on and off, as a songwriter, singer and guitarist, throughout their history.  John has also written songs for numerous other musicians that received airplay, especially in the 1970's through the 1980's.  In our May of 2021 interview, multi-award winning program director Ray White caught up with John to discuss his history with Orleans, involvement in Musicians United for Safe Energy and his latest solo album Reclaiming My Time.  In our showcase segment we feature Firefall, whose new album is titled Comet - reuniting 3 original members of the band.  Two of the bands that helped make music of the 1970's great, right here on Classic Artists Today!

Oleg Bodrov is the Chairperson for NGO Green World. Oleg is an engineer-physicist and environmentalist. After finishing his studies at the Leningrad Polytechnic University (1976) as an engineer-physicist he has been engaged in testing of nuclear submarines. From 1980 till 1993 he was head of a group of the Regional Ecological Laboratory of the Khlopin Radium Institute, St. Petersburg. After a visit to the contaminated area of the Chernobyl NPP in 1986, he left the nuclear industry and came to the environmental movement. Since 2005 he has been one of the initiators & head of an international NGO project for a promotion of safe decommissioning of the Russian nuclear power plants and final disposal of, spent nuclear fuel on the basis of the best international practice (Germany, Lithuania, USA, Sweden, Finland). In 1999, Center for Safe Energy, sponsored 3 weeks of People's Hearings on plutonium fuel in Russia. A delegation of US activists and experts went to Russia as participants in this education effort. Delegates included our executive director Lou Zeller and this is where he met and worked with Oleg. A few years later, Oleg along with his other colleagues from Russia came to the U.S. to advocate and educate against nuclear. Ultimately, with this foundation, plus local community work in NC, SC and GA. Some legal actions challenging NRC permitting (Duke Energy's Catawba and McGuire power plants were slated to use the fuel), succeeded in stopping the joint Russian-American project to use plutonium in nuclear electric power plants. The American factory for fuel manufacture would have been at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. Indeed, the Dept. of Energy spent $4 billion on it before abandoning the project. With Oleg, we talk about his transition from nuclear into the environment movement, his experience in Russia before and after Chernobyl happened, his time in the U.S. touring nuclear facilities, the Russian version of the NRC, and current issues he's working on now. This week I saw two shows I loved! The GREAT "Bonnie Raitt" at the San Jose Civic "Hamlet" with National Theatre London   BONNIE RAITT   In March of 2000, Bonnie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; this was followed by her welcome into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame, along with her father, in June 2001. After the Fundamental tour, she went back into the studio with her veteran road band to record 'Silver Lining', released in 2002. Featuring Bonnie's stunning interpretation of the David Gray-penned title track, the Grammy-nominated "Gnawin' On It," and the hit single "I Can't Help You Now," 'Silver Lining' was considered by many critics to be one of the best albums of her career. She promoted the album with a lengthy world tour that included her Green Highway Festival and an eco-partnership promoting BioDiesel fuel, the environment, and alternative energy solutions at shows and benefits along the way. In 2003, she released the retrospective 'The Best of Bonnie Raitt' on Capitol. Raitt stayed busy with more guest appearances, including the stunning duet "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind" on Ray Charles' final release 'Genius Loves Company', which won the Grammy award for Album of the Year, and a duet on the Grammy-winning album 'True Love' by Toots & The Maytals. Her 1989 breakthrough album 'Nick of Time', was remixed for surround sound, and released by Capitol Records in 2004 as a DVD-Audio, garnering a Grammy nomination in the newly created category, Best Surround Sound Album. In 2003, she also participated in Martin Scorsese's acclaimed PBS series, 'The Blue's, performing two songs in Wim Wenders' film, 'The Soul of a Man', and joining the all-star cast of 'Lightning in a Bottle', the live feature concert film on the Blues directed by Antoine Fuqua. She also contributed songs for two Disney movies, 'The Country Bears' and 'Home on the Range'. She played guitar on a track on Stevie Wonder's album 'A Time To Love', and appeared in the TV/DVD tribute 'Music l0l: Al Green'. 'Souls Alike', her first album ever to bear the credit "Produced by Bonnie Raitt," debuted at #19 on the Billboard 200 in September 2005, eliciting widespread critical acclaim and propelling Raitt back onto the road. She was also selected as the inaugural artist for the VH1 'Classic Decades Rock Live!' CD/DVD series. 'Bonnie Raitt and Friends' featuring Norah Jones, Ben Harper, Alison Krauss and Keb' Mo' was released in August of 2006. In the years in and around the release of 'Souls Alike', she co-headlined with Jackson Browne and Keb Mo' part of the historic "Vote For Change" tour leading up to the 2004 Presidential election, and then again for the 2008 election, staged a series of benefit concerts and fundraising receptions to help get out the vote and encourage voting in key Democratic Senate races. In 2007, Bonnie joined her MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) friends Jackson Browne and Graham Nash to launch a campaign to prevent the legislative bailout of the nuclear industry and developed www.nukefree.org, a website that serves as an information and networking hub for safe energy activists. Escalating the Resistance to Fossil Fuels by MFlowers May has been a month of escalated resistance to fossil fuel industries and a call for a rapid transition to clean renewable sources of energy. The month began with Break Free: two weeks of direct action targeting coal, oil and gas around the world. That was followed by a week of action called the Rubber Stamp Rebellion protesting the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for its approval of new fossil fuel infrastructure without adequate consideration of the impacts new projects will have on the health and safety of communities, harm to the environment or worsening of the climate crisis. In 1968, Graham Nash left his native England and flew to Los Angeles to visit his enchanting, brilliant girlfriend, Joni Mitchell.
