This week's interview with Lynne Twist, philanthropist and bestselling author of The Soul of Money, is a must-listen!   We dive into how money can be sacred, how to break free from the toxic myth of scarcity, and why abundance & sufficiency is a state of being—not an amount.   Speaking of the soul of money and earning money with integrity, intuition, and following your soul's purpose, I have a FREE live workshop on this topic.  Register at juliereisler.com/workshops.   Takeaways Lynne Twist emphasizes the importance of understanding our relationship with money. The journey to writing 'The Soul of Money' was collaborative and rooted in activism. Scarcity is a toxic myth that leads to unhealthy behaviors around money. The original purpose of money was to ensure everyone is taken care of. We can reclaim our relationship with money by focusing on sufficiency rather than accumulation. Generosity and gratitude are key to happiness and fulfillment. Inner riches are more valuable than outer riches. The culture promotes consumerism, which diminishes our sense of community. We can shift our mindset from consumer to citizen to foster responsibility. There is enough for everyone, but not for greed. We often feel we need more to be okay. Sufficiency is a state of being, not an amount. Practicing gratitude can transform our experiences. We live in the conversations we have about our lives. Giving and receiving are expressions of equanimity. Shopping in your house can lead to meaningful gifts. Children value time with their parents over material gifts. Follow your heart and serve the world authentically. Life itself is a gift that should be cherished. Express gratitude for the Earth and its blessings.   ✨

Alexandra “Lexi” Hudson was raised by a philosopher father and a mother who is a recognized manners expert.  As a result, she has spent much of her life contemplating what forms of behavior constitute “the good life,” and lead to human flourishing.  Following a disheartening stint working in government and seeing even spotty incidents of politeness masking an underlying incivility, she was driven to write her new book, which reaches back to great thinkers and writers throughout history to teach us timeless lessons. It is this work that forms the basis of this Blue Sky conversation.    From her book description:  “From classical philosophers like Epictetus, to great twentieth-century thinkers like Martin Luther King Jr., to her own experience working in the federal government during one of the most politically fraught eras in our nation's history, Hudson examines how civility—a respect for the personhood and dignity of others—transcends political disagreements. Respecting someone means valuing them enough to tell them when you think they are wrong.”    Order The Soul of Civility Chapters: 02:05 Meet Lexi Hudson Bill introduces his guest, Alexandra Hudson, a writer and speaker dedicated to civility and human flourishing.   04:50 The Disease of Division Lexi discusses the societal ‘disease' of division and incivility, reflecting on her experiences in government.   06:54 Growing Up with Judy the Manners Lady Lexi shares her unique upbringing as the daughter of Judi the Manners Lady, highlighting the influence of her mother's kindness and emphasis on community.   08:00 Civility vs. Politeness Lexi distinguishes between civility and politeness, explaining that civility is rooted in recognizing others as moral equals.   11:40 The Importance of Disagreement Lexi emphasizes that true civility sometimes requires engaging in difficult conversations and disagreeing respectfully.   13:02 Global Trends in Incivility The conversation shifts to the global rise of incivility, with Lexi noting that the challenges faced in the U.S. are mirrored worldwide.   16:06 The Role of Social Media Lexi discusses the impact of social media on societal discourse, drawing parallels to historical concerns about new technologies. She highlights the need for mindfulness in digital interactions to preserve humanity.  22:33 Remembering the Human Element Lexi stresses the importance of recognizing the human side of social media interactions, which can often lead to dehumanization. She encourages listeners to maintain empathy and connection in digital communications.  27:20 Navigating Opinions in a Divided World Lexi shares insights on the pressure to have opinions on every issue, especially during crises. She advocates for the idea that it's okay to refrain from engaging in every argument, emphasizing the value of thoughtful consideration.  33:37 The Perils of Constant Distraction Drawing from Blaise Pascal's insights, Lexi addresses humanity's struggle with distraction and the inability to sit quietly in solitude. She argues that this constant need for stimulation detracts from self-awareness and authentic connections with others.  36:01 The Call for Solitude and Self-Reflection Lexi elaborates on Pascal's thoughts regarding the necessity of solitude for understanding oneself and forming meaningful relationships. She emphasizes that embracing quiet moments can lead to deeper connections and a more fulfilling life.  37:50 Envisioning a Civil Society In the concluding segment, Lexi paints a hopeful picture of a society transformed by the principles outlined in her book, advocating for deeper connections and understanding among individuals. She envisions a world where civility fosters warmth, intimacy, and genuine curiosity about one another.

What is this thing we call "consciousness"? It feels like a non-physical thing that somehow exists as a separate entity to our physical body. We might think of it as being located up in our brain where our internal chatter is generated, but the 'mind' still somehow feels separate to the 'brain'. Then along comes an octopus to complicate the matter. Octopuses clearly have consciousness and high intelligence. But the last common ancestor between us and them is a flatworm that trawled the sea floor about 750 million years ago, so it's not surprising that their brains have evolved to be very different to ours. In fact, some people say they have nine brains. This is due to a complex neural network that runs throughout their body, meaning they have the ability to make different decisions from all eight arms without having to send messages back up to the central brain. So how can the mind of an octopus be seperate to its body? And does this mean that our mind and body are also one and the same? Featuring writer Sy Montgomery, author of 'The Soul of an Octopus', and philosopher Julian Baggini, author of 'How the World Thinks'.

Should it be so broadly ‘Basketball' or the ‘NBA or NBA Basketball'? (4:30) The ‘bi-line' of the book reads: ‘The epic showdown between LeBron, Kobe, Doc and Dirk that Saved the NBA' - saved it from what? And with the latest Finals ratings so poor, do you still hold this belief? (7:03) You chose a quote by Wynton Marsalis to start your book. How did you find it? Why did you choose it? (12:35) “Rarely did Kobe make the game look as easy or artistic as Jordan” - I agree. Why do you suppose that was? (16:44) I want to talk to you about writing with courage - “Kobe's stubbornness had been earned throughout his years of fighting to be the player he could never be. He could never be Jordan, and from that failure he had broken free.” - You wrote this describing Bryant's 6/24 in Game 7 of the Finals over Boston. I totally agree with the assessment, but where did you find the courage to write this and the challenging/critical bits of your book? (18:50) During the 2011 Finals Gregg Doyel asked a very piercing question about LeBron “shrinking” offensively in Games 1 to 3. If I remember correctly - you didn't make mention of it, why not? It seemed to mirror your own thoughts precisely. What are you thoughts on Doyel asking that question at the time and now? Thoughts on Lebron's condescending “watch the tape and you can ask a better question tomorrow” response? (24:01) Page 45 - you described the post Decision dislike for LeBron as it pertains to James as Jordan's heir. Despite living 16,000kms apart you described exactly how I and my friends felt about that decision. What helped you articulate this thought? (29:14) Stern - “we knew it (the decision) was going to be terrible, and we tried very hard for it not to happen”. Why do you suppose Stern/The League failed in their ambition to stop the decision? (32:32)  You write; Stern had a “less endearing inclination to bully and berate” - don't suppose you have any examples? (34:00)  “In America, where freedoms are often taken for granted, the theatre of the NBA was often frustrating. Elsewhere, however, it was inspiring.” - Just tell us what you meant by that? Why frustrating? (36:52) Following on from the above question where does masculinity and the lack of contact factor into your thinking about basketball as it pertains to its appeal to Americans (or even Australians)? Is it a masculine sport? Compared to Rugby or AFL or NFL it's not - do fans struggle to understand it? (41:49)  Page 67 - Michael Jordan vs Bill Russell as a civil rights activist. I disagree with you from an international standpoint. It's a question of passive v aggressive. (46:08) Doc Rivers: “The superstars are the easiest to coach … They play because of something other than the money. It's the average player and the below-average player thats chasing the money. Those are the guys that are tough, because you're trying to get them to buy into a role, to be a winner - but they're trying to make their careers”. Great quote. How did you leverage a relatively explosive quote like this from Doc? What were the conditions/surrounds of your interview(s)? Does this quote fill you with optimism about his chances of success with the 76ers? (50:37)  “The obsession with discovering the next Michael Jordan was based on a cynical assumption that the NBA had peaked in the 1990s, as if nothing could be better than the past” - why cynical? Why that choice of words? Did the people saying and thinking that have something to gain? (57:08)  The above condition is something the Australian NBL is struggling with. Coming away from Andrew Gaze and the Gaze family. I compare it to - how do you tell a Star Wars story without Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader? That's my question to you - how to shake the cynicism? (59:33)  Page 199 - Doc Rivers via John Thompson “Nobody wants to put their reputations on the line anymore” - you seem to imply this is a result of a lot of the players coming from single-parent, mother only households and the informal AAU basketball playgrounds. Did I read that right? (1:02:00)  “Need to know your faults, little bit of an asshole and fucked-up to be a ref”. I really enjoyed the chapter on referee Joey Crawford. It was my favourite. Did you always have the ambition to include it? Why did you include it? And why as the second last chapter of the book? (1:06:17)  What do you suppose would have happened to the NBA had LeBron James and the Miami Heat won the 2011 NBA Championship? (Page 286) (1:12:31)  “I'm a good Irishman … I don't hold a grudge. Only the drunks do - and the Celtics. But not me.” - Pat Riley - again, how did you get this quotes - what were the situations surrounding him giving it? What was it in answer to? (1:17:05)  The final line - The Great Gatsby - The final line of your book reads “Basketball, thanks to Dirk Nowitzki, had grown up at long last to become the sport of the American Dream.” it has shades of “Gatsby believed in the green light the orgastic future that year-by-year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter tomorrow we run faster, stretch out our arms further. And one fine morning so we beat on boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past”.  Am I reading into this too much? Was this your intention? Is Dirk a foreign-born basketball Gatsby? Did you read that book in preparation for writing this one? Has Dirk read the book and said anything to you? Have any other personalities mentioned in the book contacted you? Interviewed Sam Smith - I asked him if he thinks Michael Jordan has ever read The Jordan Rules - he answered NO - do you think LeBron James has read your book? What do suppose LeBron's reaction would be if he read it? (1:22:26)  Does LeBron James winning this most recent championship with the Lakers, his third team, change or reaffirm anything from your book? (1:26:37)  How does the NBL and Australian media sell the sporting embodiment of the ‘American Dream' to a non-American audience? (1:28:04)

By Ruth Kinna and Clifford Harper. Read by Barbara Graham and Jim Donaghey. Scholar, poet, playwright, socialite and wit, Oscar Wilde is one of those magnetic figures that everyone now seems to want to own a piece of. His literary genius accounts for some of the competition, and 'The Soul of Man Under Socialism', the essay he published in 1891, usually puts him in the anarchist frame, typically as a kind of individualist. But the vindictiveness of the reaction to his public disgrace as a ‘posing sodomite' is at least as significant for his story, and the ferocity of the public outrage explains why liberals, libertarians of all stripes, and especially gay rights campaigners are now eager to declare him as their own. This week I saw two shows I loved! The GREAT "Bonnie Raitt" at the San Jose Civic "Hamlet" with National Theatre London   BONNIE RAITT   In March of 2000, Bonnie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; this was followed by her welcome into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame, along with her father, in June 2001. After the Fundamental tour, she went back into the studio with her veteran road band to record 'Silver Lining', released in 2002. Featuring Bonnie's stunning interpretation of the David Gray-penned title track, the Grammy-nominated "Gnawin' On It," and the hit single "I Can't Help You Now," 'Silver Lining' was considered by many critics to be one of the best albums of her career. She promoted the album with a lengthy world tour that included her Green Highway Festival and an eco-partnership promoting BioDiesel fuel, the environment, and alternative energy solutions at shows and benefits along the way. In 2003, she released the retrospective 'The Best of Bonnie Raitt' on Capitol. Raitt stayed busy with more guest appearances, including the stunning duet "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind" on Ray Charles' final release 'Genius Loves Company', which won the Grammy award for Album of the Year, and a duet on the Grammy-winning album 'True Love' by Toots & The Maytals. Her 1989 breakthrough album 'Nick of Time', was remixed for surround sound, and released by Capitol Records in 2004 as a DVD-Audio, garnering a Grammy nomination in the newly created category, Best Surround Sound Album. In 2003, she also participated in Martin Scorsese's acclaimed PBS series, 'The Blue's, performing two songs in Wim Wenders' film, 'The Soul of a Man', and joining the all-star cast of 'Lightning in a Bottle', the live feature concert film on the Blues directed by Antoine Fuqua. She also contributed songs for two Disney movies, 'The Country Bears' and 'Home on the Range'. She played guitar on a track on Stevie Wonder's album 'A Time To Love', and appeared in the TV/DVD tribute 'Music l0l: Al Green'. 'Souls Alike', her first album ever to bear the credit "Produced by Bonnie Raitt," debuted at #19 on the Billboard 200 in September 2005, eliciting widespread critical acclaim and propelling Raitt back onto the road. She was also selected as the inaugural artist for the VH1 'Classic Decades Rock Live!' CD/DVD series. 'Bonnie Raitt and Friends' featuring Norah Jones, Ben Harper, Alison Krauss and Keb' Mo' was released in August of 2006. In the years in and around the release of 'Souls Alike', she co-headlined with Jackson Browne and Keb Mo' part of the historic "Vote For Change" tour leading up to the 2004 Presidential election, and then again for the 2008 election, staged a series of benefit concerts and fundraising receptions to help get out the vote and encourage voting in key Democratic Senate races. In 2007, Bonnie joined her MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) friends Jackson Browne and Graham Nash to launch a campaign to prevent the legislative bailout of the nuclear industry and developed www.nukefree.org, a website that serves as an information and networking hub for safe energy activists. In August 2011, MUSE mounted a very successful benefit concert at Shoreline Amphitheatre to raise funds for Japan disaster relief (following the devastating earthquake, tsunami and meltdown of the Daichi-Fukushima nuclear reactors earlier in the year), as well as non-nuclear organizations worldwide. https://www.bonnieraitt.com/   HAMLET by William Shakespeare Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC's Sherlock, The Imitation Game) takes on the title role of Shakespeare's great tragedy.  Now seen by over 750,000 people worldwide, the original 2015 NT Live broadcast returns to cinemas. As a country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father's death but paralyzed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state. Directed by Lyndsey Turner (Posh, Chimerica) and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions. One of the most visually and atmospherically stunning productions I've ever seen, of anything, ever. - Time Out http://ntlive.nationaltheatre.org.uk/   -------------------------------------- Please tell your friends about this podcast!
