(from Erik's website bio): "Growing up in the rugged mountains of western Colorado, Erik Stucky picked up his first mandolin at the age of 8. Following the release of his debut album Stray Clouds in 2017, Stucky packed up his instruments and a single suitcase and pointed his pickup for Nashville. Influenced heavily by New Grass Revival and Lyle Lovett, the Americana artist proved his ability to cross genres from Country, to Soul, to Jazz, all the while maintaining an unmistakable writing style and voice with his sophomore album, Good Vibrations (2021). Performing on the mandolin and guitar, Stucky combines his passion for lyric writing, folk instrumentation, and big band arrangements." On this episode we chat with Sicard Hollow, a four-piece progressive bluegrass band with a passion for pushing the boundaries of the genre. Formed via mutual connections in the Nashville music scene, these psychedelic punk-grass rockers found themselves tired of existing institutions telling them who to be and what to sound like, and before they met in 2018 none of the members even considered playing bluegrass. Matt Rennick (violinist) was working on electronic music while Will Herrin (mandolin/vocals) was playing guitar in rock bands. Meanwhile singer/guitarist Alex King had spent years as an artist without an art-form, searching for a home by pouring his sweat and heart into whatever project he was a part of. As they were individually navigating a fickle industry they collectively stumbled across something that felt genuine, bluegrass. Heavily influenced by the Grateful Dead and New Grass Revival, these young pickers bring fresh vitality to a timeless style and approach it with a combination of fearless improvisation and instrumental prowess. Their debut album, Secret of the Breeze, was produced by Dan Davis at Zac Brown and Oliver Wood's Southern Ground Nashville studio. The goal was to capture the spontaneity, passion, and energy of live shows, and the result was a perfect encapsulation of the band's genre-kicking tenacity. As fate would have it however, the band's emergence coincided with the shutdown of live music due to pandemic fears, and they were forced to cancel their entire release tour supporting their debut studio record. Aside from a live performance at the Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville, the band turned inward to reflect on their identity and work on new material with a desire to create songs that could add their generation's voice to a classic genre of music. With the help of producer John Mailander (Billy Strings, Bruce Hornsby) and recording/mixing engineer Dan Davis, the band further honed their identity. The result was an explosive combination of pop-punk melodies, psychedelic instrumental breaks, and existential song-writing all packaged as a bluegrass quartet dressed in tattoos and tie-dyes. Since their inception, Sicard Hollow has been on a journey of self discovery, challenging themselves to put a unique stamp on bluegrass music while touring extensively and growing their sound with every performance. The new album, Brightest of Days, is a perfect example of how the group can pay homage to their bluegrass roots, while blowing the door open on the expectations of the traditional style. A positive skepticism toward the mainstream permeates the entire record, with songs like “Forecast of Life” and “Where I'm At” impressing a new-American-Zen that dances through the chaos. You'll also hear Mike tell a story about a time when Béla's music saved him from a “horrible mind state” at the first ever Bonnaroo, and Béla imparts deep musical wisdom as the three dive deep on similarities between jazz and bluegrass music. Béla is an incredibly knowledgeable musician with experience playing alongside some of the greatest artists of the last century, and you won't want to miss what he has to say in this discussion.Béla Fleck is a wizard-like banjo player from New York City who is best known for his playing with New Grass Revival and with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones. Béla is widely acknowledged as a pioneer within his craft for fusing elements of bluegrass, jazz, and traditional African music. He has won 14 Grammy Awards and has been nominated 33 times, and in 2020 he was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame as a member of New Grass Revival. In this episode you'll get a glimpse inside of his incredible musical mind and find out how he perceives his craft and approaches his playing. We are digging into the archives to celebrate some of the conversations listeners have loved the most and that have shaped this project. Béla Fleck is one of the greatest living banjo players. He's followed what many experience as this quintessential American roots instrument back to its roots in Africa, and he's taken it where no banjo has gone before. Abigail Washburn is a celebrated banjo player and singer, both in English and Chinese. These two are partners in music and in life — recovering something ancient and deeply American all at once, bringing both beauty and refreshment to what they play and how they live.Béla Fleck has recorded over 40 albums, most famously with The Flecktones and New Grass Revival. His albums include Flight of the Cosmic Hippo, UFO Tofu, and Rocket Science. He has released two full album collaborations with Abigail Washburn, Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn and Echo in the Valley. In 2020, he released Throw Down Your Heart: The Complete Africa Sessions. His latest album is, My Bluegrass Heart. Abigail Washburn is a clawhammer banjo player and singer. Her solo albums include Song of the Traveling Daughter and City of Refuge. Her newest album is Wu Fei And Abigail Washburn, a collaboration with her longtime friend, the renowned guzheng player Wu Fei. Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.This show originally aired in June 2015.

What a blast listening to him and playing music together. - Warren Haynes, The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule Matt,TheBanjoPlayer’s name might be simple but the music of the man that wears the moniker is anything but. Rare is the musician that possesses such a strange ability to blend and intersect the complicated nuances of the head with the passionate sways of the heart. And somehow incorporate them with subtlety and power. Transforming an age old instrument into something more like a five string version of Doc Brown’s time-traveling Delorean. Seamlessly dancing back and forth between traditional sounds and future-seeking modern motifs. Lauded by Grammy award-winning banjo player Winston Marshall of Mumford and Sons as his ‘‘biggest inspiration on the banjo'“, MATT’s other-worldly banjo playing has received praise from all corners of the musical universe. His unique approach to the 5-string has led him to record and perform with such luminaries as Béla Fleck, Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas, and Mumford And Sons; just to name a few.  First introduced to the banjo through his grandpas love for bluegrass music, Matt connected quickly with the instrument. And at 17 his coming out party included winning the prestigious Winfield National Banjo Championship. From there he co-founded two  critically acclaimed bluegrass-acoustic super groups Cadillac Sky and Chess Boxer and circled the planet with his banjo in hand.  Around the same time that Matt was studying the works of Earl Scruggs and Béla Fleck, Matt was also falling in love with the music in video games. Before long Shuckin’ the Corn was cross breeding with Sonic the Hedgehog and in 2018 he decided to combine his most powerful musical influences - video game music and bluegrass - and recorded a record under the name The Hit Points of which Higher Plain Music called The Hit Points debut the ‘Biggest surprise of 2018 to date’ and Gamasutra recognized that The Hit Points gave listeners ‘the album they never knew they needed’.  As FiveSpeedbanjo.com put it, ‘Clark Kent climbs into a phone booth and transforms into The Man of Steel, Matt Menefee climbs into a banjo case and becomes MATT, TheBanjoPlayer.’  Whether it’s carving out sonic spaces within genres as diverse as hip hop, rock, EDM, Jazz, or classical music, or colluding with former C-Sky bandmate Bryan Simpson to create the Alt-bluegrass sounds of The Golden Age or continuing to integrate the compositions of video games with the sounds of bluegrass, MATT, TheBanjoPlayer is just beginning to come into his own. Whether it’s as MATT, TheBanjoPlayer or MATT, TheBanjoPlayer Plays Video Games he is changing the colors and sounds that have for so long ear-marked the banjo. Be on the lookout for MATT, TheBanjoPlayer.Matt is technically one of the best musicians I have ever worked with. Yes, he is very gifted, but also he works non-stop at his craft. - John Cowan, founding member of New Grass Revival

Doobie Brothers Bassist John Cowan Talks Rock & Bluegrass

John Cowan is one of bluegrass, country, and rock's finest tenor vocalist. Fortunately for New Grass Revival, The Doobie Brothers, and many others, he's a damn fine bass guitarist too! Cowan, along with other New Grass members, will be officially inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame on October 1 in a previously taped ceremony from the stage of the historic Ryman Auditorium. It's an honor he holds dear to his heart.  Born in Ohio, Cowan first developed his musical talent in Louisville, Kentucky, when he began playing cover tunes in local rock bands. His first musical break came in the early 1970s when working at a car wash in Louisville and received a call from New Grass Revival member Sam Bush, inviting him to audition. He was offered a spot as the band's new bassist that very day. Cowan returned to Louisville long enough to gather his belonging and quit his job. He immediately moved in with another member so the group could begin practicing. They soon discovered just how great a vocal range their new bass player added to the group.  "Callin' Baton Rouge," the highest-charting New Grass Revival tune, was later recorded by Garth Brooks, who also scored a top-five hit on the country charts years later. Cowan also added his tenor vocals to Brook's version.  When New Grass Revival disbanded around 1990, Cowan joined forces with Pat Simmons of The Doobie Brother's, Bill Lloyd of Foster & Lloyd, and Rusty Young of Poco to form The Sky Kings.  The Doobie Brother's decided to reunite in 1992 and needed a bass player. His bandmate and an original Doobie member, Pat Simmons, suggested Cowan would be a wonderful addition to the band.  A few years later, Cowan left the Doobie's to explore a solo career. The John Cowan Band still tours, giving audiences a taste of Cowan's expansive bluegrass vocals. As great an instrumentalist and vocalist Cowan is, he still gets star-struck when he encountered close friends like Emmylou Harris or the late Leon Russell. "Both are two of the greatest artists I have ever been associated with." With his soft gray hair and engaging smile, Cowan enjoys touring and looks forward to playing for live audiences. Besides playing with his own band, The Doobie Brothers 50th Anniversary Tour will hopefully happen in 2021. John Cowan will certainly remain a force in popular music for many years. Please enjoy this episode with Hall of Famer John Cowan and leave us a review on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts.

I've been steady and learning lonely, keeping this turntable spinning, everything from Jones to Jennings. I just love that he references “the greats.” And that was kind of what I liked about the My Church song, is that she referenced some of “the greats” as well. You know, we all have great memories or you know certain songs from “the greats” spark certain memories. So I just love those references. He says, slowly planning my survival in a three-foot stack of vinyl and think about that. That's a yard. So a three-foot stack of vinyl. This guy's got a lot of music to listen to. And I'm sure he's got a lot of heartbreak to get over. I know when I would have a heartache, I would pick a song and I would listen to it over and over and over again. My grandfather had made a bunk bed for me. And I remember sitting in that bunk listening to Jewel, two certain songs by her, You Were Meant for Me and Foolish Games. And when I broke up with my boyfriend, I just remember sitting up there, listen to those songs over and over again, just crying my heart out sometimes singing my heart out. And also listening to Fergie Big Girls Don't Cry. I love that song and I love her vibrato. And I just love her. Anyway and then he says, I've been having a record year, and I'm sure he means that quite sarcastically. But also, realistically, as he really has this three foot stack of records in front of… And so he's having a record year as he's listening to all of them. And I'm sure all of the memories that come with all of those records. You know, maybe him and his wife or his girl danced to that song or maybe they fell in love to that song or you know maybe it was after a really awesome night out on the town. And that was just a highlight song for the evening. I just think about, you know, all those memories that must be flooding him and probably bumming him out too. Next, he says I bet you thought before you left, I just sit in silence by myself and turn this house into a jail. And that's really what we do, isn't it? We get hurt by somebody, and we just kind of close off and we stay in our bed or set up permanent camp on the couch, just Netflix till our heart feels better. You know, wherever that safe space is for us we just kind of stay there and wallow in our feelings until we feel like we can face people, society again. Okay dying slowly and a living hell. But loves got a funny way of keeping score. You're leaving lit up my scoreboard. I usually make it through side A sober. And it took me a long time to get those words “side A sober.” I had to look them up, but it really reminded me of when we used to go to my grandparent's house for the holidays. They had the Chipmunks 45 of Christmas Don't be Late. And we would always listen to that. But I remembered, Oh yeah, there was a side one and side two when it got to a certain point you had to flip that record over. So that was kind of a fun memory that came from listening to this song. And then he says, having a record year again, all bets are off when I slipper over, one bourbon one scotch one beer. And I got to do it [Singing]”a one bourbon, one scotch, a one beer.” I'm not always in tune but I do love music. And again, it's just that reference. He flips it over. And now it's time to drink. You know he's in his feelings and he's gonna have a drink. But I also bet that that song, One Bourbon, One Scotch, One beer, by George Thorogood was on side two. I mean or on side, you know side B. How cool would that be if that was a reference to where that song actually was on the record? I don't have the record so I can't tell you. If you guys have the record, Hey, shoot me a DM all my social handles are in the show notes. So feel free to reach out to me and, and let me know if that song really is on the B side of that record. And then he says he's having a record year. And that was probably one of the records that he was listening to. So he's having a record year sarcastically. He’s having a record year with all the records, and now he's having a record year with that record too. Then the next verse says, quarter notes and Hanks halftime. And again, I would love to know if Hank's music was normally in halftime. That would make sense. And I again, just love how the lyrics fit in the rhyming sense but the lyrics fit as far as a record and music that Hank had. You'll have to let me know… are pounded in this heart of mine. Song to song I pass the time with the speakers on 10. And I love that because when I'm upset. And when I'm really happy. My music goes loud. And I am singing out those lyrics, at the top of my lungs. Next To You says you're good and gone keeps me up all night, along with the Songs in The Key of Life. So I had to look that up. That's actually Stevie Wonder, and I was surprised because the songs are very upbeat. So I wouldn't expect that in the song about you know his girls left him and he's bummed out. But, I suppose if you have a three-foot stack of records they can't be all where they bum you out, right? Some of them have to be upbeat. And then also, you know, maybe he's trying to cheer himself up. Maybe he puts a couple of happy songs on after One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer. Probably not just one of each. But he's partying at home, you know all alone and he's got the records poor ol boys having kind of a little bit of a pity party, but rightfully so. She's left him, she's out there doing God knows what as he says in his lyrics. You're out there now doing God knows how, and I'm stuck here, having a record year he's kind of feeling sad for himself. He's got another reference to his crappy year. You know being a little bit sarcastic. I'm stuck here having a record year. Okay, and this is probably my favorite, favorite verse of this song. You're leaving left me going crazy. I'm counting on a needle to save me. I drop it in the groove, and we go round and round and down in a spiral. When I first listened to this I was like oh my gosh this guy's doing drugs. But that's not the case, he's listening to songs on records. And he's, he's counting on that music to save them. So when I did that Marren Morris review of My Church, it's that religious experience that you have when you're listening to music and it just kind of makes everything else melt away. And you can navigate through whatever issues are kind of bumming you out at the time. And I would say, I've never counted on a needle to save me. Probably cuz I don't have a record player. I missed my calling as a comedian. Wouldn't you say? No, I mean, I've definitely like counted on music to get me through something. Because music does that it just heals our souls and makes us feel better, or makes us forget about the crud for a little while. Yeah, so he's talking about the needle on the record player he drops it in a groove. And how cool because records actually have grooves and it goes round and round, just like a record. But I think he's referencing how their relationship probably went round around in a downward spiral. And then obviously she ended up leaving. He says I guess I really ought to call and thank you, I discovered Redheaded Stranger got down with old James Brown and found New Grass Revival. If you find your way back, I owe you a beer, for my record year. He's going through all these records and he ends up finding, you know, maybe a style of music that he likes or an artist that he likes. I'm embarrassed to say it, but I didn't know Redheaded Stranger, it’s Willie Nelson's album. So that was kind of fun I love doing some of these song reviews because I do get to learn about music in general, and other artists so that was really kind of cool. And then he says, you know that he's having a record year again. And I just think it's kind of funny or applicable to texting, right? We have to be careful how we shoot that text to somebody because you never know how the other person is receiving it. He could mean he's having a record year like he's having the best year of his life. He could mean he's having a record year like he's listening to all the records in that three-foot stack of vinyl. Or he could mean, oh yeah, I'm really having a record year, like most of us in 2020. And again, I would just kind of like to know what you guys thought when you first heard it. Did you think he was having an awesome year? Did you think he was having a crappy year? You know we listen to those songs, the first time, and we think we know what the song is about until you hear for the fifth or sixth time and you go oh wait a minute, this guy's not having a very good year. So just kind of curious how you heard it the first time. Thank you so much for joining me and I just really, this is one of those songs that has always kind of stuck with me. I love that I get this vibe, you know like that cowboy with his hat down. He's got a toothpick coming out of the side of his mouth, his old lady just left him, thinking about having a drink or, you know what, what the hell I'm gonna put a record on. So he puts a record on, he kind of gets into the groove of it. He stumbles over the counter to make another drink. He's flipping it over, or decide B or I guess he's already been on side B, going through those memories and thinking man, “Son of a gun. She's gone.” You know, light filtering through, dust being exposed for the light that's filtering through just a really cool. You know, sad ol boy and his low ball of whiskey and memories. I hope you guys can kind of envision it the same way, and look forward to talking to you guys again next week. Thanks so much for joining me!

This week I’m talking with my friend Bobby Rymer who owns the publishing company Writer’s Den Music Group in Nashville. He’s worked his way from the bottom to the top of record labels and publishing companies in the music industry and has a career that has spanned over 35 years. We are discussing the process of working your way up the ladder at publishing companies and record labels, the importance of knowing the history of the music industry, what publishers are looking for when signing new writers and the best venues to play in Nashville to get noticed by industry insiders.Show Notes:Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. Talking Points:*I own Writer’s Den Music Group. As a publisher I have a day gig and a night gig.*During the day I pitch songs and have meetings, etc. At night I go to showcases and meet writers and artists.*Spend money smartly.*Look over your options at what you want to accomplish and how.*You don’t have to have an office anymore if you have a laptop and a phone you can do most of your work that way.*I was doing social work and realized it was not my passion and I decided to go back to school to get a degree in the music business.*My friend got a job at Capitol Records in the mail room and called and asked if I would be interested in his old job at a record store. Then 9 months later he called saying he got promoted and asked if I wanted my name put in for the mail room job at Capitol.*The mail room at a record label is the bottom of the totem pole which is where most people have to start.*Get in anyway you can and prove your worth.*Ask yourself “how bad do you want it?”*Internships and a course called "Copyright Law" are worth their weight in gold.*You really don’t start to understand how the music industry works until you’re in it working everyday and making relationships and learning how things are done.*I got to sit in on meetings and learn how you find talent and find songs.*If you can, try to work out a smaller company because you will stand out more as opposed to a larger company that just churns interns out every semester.*After about a year and a half an opening came up in A&R and I was able to move up because the label looked within before looking out.*My main job in A&R was to go out and find songs for the artists on the label by meeting with the publishers in town.*If you want to consider the music business for a career, you better know your history.*When looking for songs for artists, I would sit with the label heads after they talked with the artists to know what they were looking for.*You go out and find songs you’re passionate about and the come back and see if there’s a home for it on the label.*You have to listen to songs and see if they are checking off the boxes of things you are looking for to fit an artist.*When you are reaching out to labels or publishers, you better know who they are and the history of people they’ve worked with and what they’ve done and you better know who they are working for now.*Get Billboard Magazine and make sure you know every artist, label, producer and writer and study the charts so it becomes second nature. That is where you start. You shouldn’t have to pause when someone asks who produced or wrote the latest hit is.*Before you knock on a door or make a phone call to a company, understand who you are talking to because if you don’t they will quickly realize that you don’t want this bad enough or you haven’t done your homework.*I was A&R for about 4 years at Capitol, then there was a regime change and lost that job.*Opportunity is not going to knock on your door, you have to go out and meet it.*I kept having meetings and eventually bumped into a publisher I knew who used to play me songs and he offered me a job as a tape copier at the music publisher Almo-Irving.*Even though it was a step back from where I had been, I wanted to stay in the industry and I got the job as the tape copy, which is the ground floor at a publishing company.*A tape copy made copies of 8-10 songs on a tape and put together lyrics and a label for publishers to take to pitch meetings.*The tape copy is the best place to start at a publishing company because that’s where you learn the catalog and the songs and writers.*The writers would come down with new songs and you would put the songs in the system so you get to spend time with the writers and build relationships.*I was tape copy for about 3 years learning until a vacancy came open and I naturally moved up to song plugger.*I realized that publishing is all I ever want to do because I get to work creators who make things out of thin air and I get to help find a home for it.*A song plugger is being aware of the labels in town, the artists in town and your job is to find a home for these songs. sometimes it’s find new writers and bringing them in to the company.*As a songwriter show up and do the work and always have your antenna up because you never know where a song idea will come from.*Some songs in a publishing catalog don’t see the light of day after a while because they have a time stamp on them using certain language and melodies from the time it was written and the language and melodies maybe different now than they were then and those things change.*Maybe the song is there but the demo is dated and will turn someone off even if it’s a great song.*If the song will take it, I like demos with acoustic instruments. Don’t go crazy with reverb. Maybe do a glorified work tape and the demo has the chance of having a longer shelf life because they aren’t dating it with certain tones and sounds.*The guitar/piano vocal demo is great because that’s the way I hear it when the writer plays it for me and there is nothing getting in the way of the lyric and the melody.*If you bring a fully produced demo and the producer knows they aren’t going produce it that way, then they have to sit with the artist and start subtracting what they don’t want and that is hard for artists to hear sometimes because they are hearing it one way and being told they are going to do it a completely different way. If you have a guitar/piano vocal and say I’m going to start adding this, they get it.*Some producers need to hear the full demo as it would be on the record.*The song will dictate what it needs as a demo ultimately.*resumes mean nothing in this business. It’s all relationship based.*I worked for Almo-Irving for 14 years and eventually ran the Nashville office. It got bought out by Universal Music Group so after a year off I started a publishing company called Writer’s Den Music Group.*Write what you know. Your story’s already been written. Tell it!*People say “no” to songs I think are hits because this is an art, not a science and everyone has their own opinion. Find people who have similar tastes to you and send them songs that fit you similar personalities. If people have different tastes than you, find out what they are.*This business is an educated guessing game.*You have to be careful to not create demos that are too much like an artist because if they pass on it and you pitch elsewhere, those artists or labels think it sounds like that particular artist and once they find out the previous artist passed on it, they think something is wrong with the song and it will not get cut.*Don’t pitch what they’ve done, pitch what they might be doing.*Write what’s familiar to all of us but unique to you.*It’s the music business, not the music I’ll do whatever I want and hope it works.*For tv/film sync music you have to stand out and offer something that no one else is.*We need the first you, not the second anybody else.*It’s about creating a mood.*Everything is negotiable.*Music supervisors only want songs that are pre cleared so they don’t have to wait 3-4 days to to get an answer from a publisher if they want to license a song.*As a publisher when I want to sign a new writer I’m looking for songs that have a good lyric and melody. If I can whistle it, I’m in.*I’m not looking the next whoever, I’m looking for the first you.*Great writers have a thumbprint like great singers do and you know within the first few seconds who wrote the song.*I’m looking for someone who can write a song told a thousand different times, told from a different angle.*If someone is reaching out to me wanting to get signed to a publishing deal, the best thing is to meet me at workshops and conferences where we can meet in person. That’s what I’m there for. Most of the time it’s by word of mouth from people I know or at songwriter nights when I go to listen to new writers.*I close my eyes when I listen to songs because I want to see the movie you’ve created. If I don’t like a song it’s because I’m seeing it and feeling it.*Maybe I’m not crazy about the song, but there are a couple of lines that are new and fresh and that will make me want to talk to the writer because that might be the tip of the iceberg for something greater.*I’m looking for potential.*Hone your craft so that when someone listens to it, there is nothing they can suggest to make it better.*You can’t control God given talent, but you can control work ethic.*I prefer to sign writers to long term contracts, not single songs because I want to build a relationship. I like to court a writer for period of time to get to know each other before I sign them.*I’m looking for a certain amount of talent and a work ethic.*Find people who will give you a leg up you do the same for others.*If we don’t see you, if we don’t hear you, you don’t exist.*Be out and play out. You need to play out 1 night and be out 4 or more. *You never know who you’re going to be standing next to or see on stage that you can develop a relationship with.*Play out so people can see you.*There are venues for tourists and venues for industry people. Play the venues such as The Local, Belcourt Taps, Douglas Corner, 3rd and Lindsley and The Bluebird where the industry people attend.*If you’re playing at these venues, you’re going to find your “class” of people to rise up with at that is usually at the earlier shows from 5-7pm. You want to be hanging around those people.*It’s about making smart decisions, hanging out at the right places at the right times, giving yourself opportunities and letting people see you are out and about and proactive. Eventually someone will take notice and you’re going to get invited to the next level. Bobby Rymer is the owner and general manager of the Nashville based music publishing company Writer’s Den Music Group.Writer’s Den was originally started in 2007 with Rymer at the helm. On this episode of Toy Heart, Béla Fleck talks to host Tom Power from his home studio and for the first time, he tells his story in bluegrass. Fleck started out in New York hearing Earl Scruggs for the first time, learning from Tony Trischka, and then making the decision to go (new) south to learn from J.D. Crowe. He auditioned for Bill Monroe, but eventually found 'his people' and joined New Grass Revival. He tells of mistakes the band made along the way, the hard decision to leave that band and start the Flecktones, recording with his hero Earl Scruggs, and how he found his way back to bluegrass after all. He also unveils the one change he thinks anyone can make to their practicing to become a better musician.

You Couldn’t Make It. Escuchar audio

About This Episode With a refreshed lineup and newfound energy, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band remains one of the most accomplished bands in American roots music. Following an extended 50th anniversary tour, the ensemble grew to a six-piece in 2018 for the first time since their early jug band days. The group now includes Jeff Hanna (acoustic guitar, electric guitar), Jimmie Fadden (drums, harmonica), Bob Carpenter (keyboards), Jim Photoglo (bass, acoustic guitar), Ross Holmes (fiddle, mandolin), and Jaime Hanna (electric and acoustic guitar). All six members also sing, and when their voices merge, the harmonies add a powerful new component for the legendary band. And with the father-son pairing of Jeff and Jaime Hanna, the band carries on a country music tradition of blood harmony. Jeff Hanna says, "It's like when you throw a couple of puppies into a pen with a bunch of old dogs. All of a sudden, the old dogs start playing, you know? That's kind of what's happened with us. The basic vibe is so up and positive, and the music– we're hearing surprises from Jaime and Ross all night. And they're encouraging us in the same way to take more chances. It's opened a lot of doors for us, musically, and the morale is really great. That's important for a band that's been out there for over 53 years." The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band played their first gig in 1966 in Southern California as a jug band and by 1969 had become a cornerstone of the burgeoning country-rock community. Their career breakthrough came in 1970 with the release of the record Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy and the single "Mr. Bojangles," a folksy Top 10 pop hit that remains a staple of their live show. During a tour stop in Nashville around that time, Earl Scruggs and his family came backstage to say hello. That introduction led to a friendship and some of the connections the band needed to record Will the Circle Be Unbroken. That three-disc album brought Nitty Gritty Dirt Band together with a number of country, folk, and bluegrass legends. Heroes like Roy Acuff, Mother Maybelle Carter, Jimmy Martin, Merle Travis, and Doc Watson joined the scruffy, young band to record country music standards such as "I Saw the Light" and "Keep on the Sunnyside." The acclaimed project is considered a landmark recording in American music. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band earned a pop resurgence in 1980 with "An American Dream" and "Make a Little Magic." Those singles also found traction on the country chart, setting the stage for a major run at country radio. The band secured 16 Top 10 country hits between 1983 and 1990, including three No. 1 singles: "Long Hard Road (The Sharecropper's Dream)," "Modern Day Romance," and "Fishin' in the Dark." Bernie Leadon, a founding member of The Eagles, played in the band from 1986 to 1988 filling a vacancy by longtime member John McEuen. With so much material to work with, the band is making it a point to shuffle the set lists more often, meaning that this isn't the same Dirt Band show from years past. "We're fortunate that we've got a deep songbook. That's been on our list, to resurrect some of the tunes we haven't done in a while, in addition to some new stuff," Hanna says. At the peak of their country career, the band toured Europe with Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, who hinted that they'd love to appear on a sequel to Will the Circle Be Unbroken, if the band ever decided to make one. That gesture convinced the band to get back in the studio to record another all-star album. Circle Volume II featured Johnny and June, as well as Rosanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Levon Helm, John Hiatt, Bruce Hornsby, John Denver, Ricky Skaggs, New Grass Revival, and many other marquee names – not to mention encore performances by Roy Acuff, Jimmy Martin, and Earl Scruggs. Released in 1989, the album won three Grammys and a CMA Award for Album of the Year. As the country music landscape shifted toward a youth market, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band kept on touring and recording. They played on two projects by The Chieftains, cut a song with Karla Bonoff for an album dedicated to the 1996 Olympics, and contributed "Maybe Baby" to a Buddy Holly tribute, Not Fade Away. Another collaborative album, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Volume III, arrived in 2003. Soon after, the band earned an additional Grammy for "Earl's Breakdown," which they recorded with Earl Scruggs, Randy Scruggs, Vassar Clements and Jerry Douglas. Meanwhile, both "Mr. Bojangles" and Will the Circle Be Unbroken were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band took a moment to acknowledge their incredible history by filming a 50th anniversary concert event at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Guests for that Circlin' Back special included early Dirt Band member Jackson Browne, Sam Bush, Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill, Alison Krauss, John Prine, Jerry Douglas, Byron House, Jerry Jeff Walker, and longtime Dirt Band member Jimmy Ibbotson. The concert aired as a nation-wide PBS Pledge special in 2016 and won a regional Emmy for Special Event Coverage. Today, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band consists of Jeff Hanna, Jimmie Fadden, Bob Carpenter, for years known as "the new guy," and Jim Photoglo, a friend of the band whose credits include cowriting "Fishin' in the Dark", as well as touring and recording with Carole King, Dan Fogelberg, and Vince Gill. Newest members Jaime Hanna and Ross Holmes also bring years of experience to the band. Hanna toured and recorded with The Mavericks and Gary Allan, while Holmes toured and recorded with Mumford & Sons and Bruce Hornsby. "The energy these days is so up -- and our fans have responded in a really great way," Hanna says. "As a fan of other bands, I know how complicated it can be when members come and go. You can either embrace that or you don't. Our fans are really gracious and I appreciate that. It's been a really good run and there's a lot of daylight ahead of us." Surviving the Music Industry

Sam Bush takes us deeper into his side of the history of bluegrass, the state of the genre, and as we reflect on past projects. Sam came in to promote his latest music, "Stop The Violence", as well as setting the record straight on some of the details of his story.    If you've seen the documentary Revival: The Sam Bush Story. You've gotten a taste and understand the life of Sam. In this episode, we actually go beyond the movie and tap into what happened in some of the pivotal moments of Sam's life. His relationship with Lonnie Wilson, life after The Bluegrass Alliance, the conception of The New Grass Revival in the Capitol Record years, and willing to walk away from what could have been great opportunities to embrace who Sam has become.    Sam is what most people have dubbed the Father of New Grass, a progressive style of bluegrass. Armed with numerous awards and accolades to justify his status in music, Sam is a champion of art while most have discredited the genre. We take time to discuss his role and thoughts on the future of bluegrass/instrumental music and take a look at his recent plea to stop the violence with his new music.

This episode of the Tasty Brew Music Podcast is a conversation my dear friend, Art White, and KKFI listener and supporter Joel Weir and I had with multi-instrumentalist and songmaster Darrell Scott. Darrell had just released the epic Couchville Sessions project and was playing his very first show EVER in Kansas City. I remembered it as a solid conversation but until I re-visited it for the first time since it occurred, I had not envisioned it as a podcast, but rather something I would somehow, some way play on my morning radio show. That didn’t happen. I am so happy conversations like these I have had over the years are going to be able to see the light of day; it is giving me the courage and desire to turn my creative energy in this direction for this podcast. This particular conversation would not have happened without the assistance of Art White who recorded and preserved it on an old Iphone and Joel Weir who was instrumental in getting us the opportunity. Art had brought a cooler full of crappie he had caught in a pond on his farm up to Knuckleheads Saloon kitchen…we cooked it all up, added some potato salad and other fixins and had us a community meal with Darrell and his family before we recorded this conversation and subsequently Darrell’s Show in the Gospel Lounge. Darrell waxes eloquently about Peter Rowan, John Cowan and New Grass Revival, his gig with Robert Plant and The Band of Joy, the legendary Guy Clark, his own father's obsession with Hank Williams, Sr. and many other topics related to leading a lyrical life. This man has written hundreds of songs....some of the best songs in the Americana music songbook..."You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive," "River Take Me," "It's a Great Day to be Alive" and of course his co-write with Guy Clark..."Out in the Parking Lot." I'm so honored to have been able to have this conversation and to share it with you here. Darrell Scott...now THAT's Americana AND Food for your Soul!

For the uninitiated, Sam Bush was a founding member of the band New Grass Revival, and as the name of this 70s outfit would suggest, this mandolin player and his cohorts including Bela Fleck, brought forth the progressive sounds of bluegrass that several of the newer bands are playing today. So it was quite a delight when a publicist sent me a streaming copy of Revival: The Sam Bush story. I knew many of the stories, but like most great documentaries, you always learn something new. The film, has been out on Amazon Prime now for a couple of weeks, and I’d encourage you to watch it, but first, have a listen to our conversation with Sam. The conversation started when I asked Sam how this film came about… Show Notes: **First Song:** 01:18 – I Just Wanna Feel Something **Interview Begins:** 6:50 **Extro Song:** 38:01 - Everything Is Possible See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

BELA FLECK AND ABIGAIL WASHBURN present their eponymous debut album as a duo, after many years of prominence as banjo players and composers in their own eclectic avenues. Bla, an icon and innovator of jazz, classical and world, with more multi-category GRAMMY wins than any other artist (15 total), and Abigail, a formidable talent with triumphs in songwriting, theater, performance, and even Chinese diplomacy by way of banjo, turn out to be quite a fortuitous pairing with a deep, distinct and satisfying outcome. The culmination is an album like no other. Bla Fleck and Abigail Washburn is a front porch banjo and vocal album of new music, Appalachian murder ballads, gospel, chamber and blues; the culmination of a yearlong tour as a duo in 2013, following the birth of their son, Juno. The record reveals their astounding chemistry as collaborators, as the two seamlessly stitch together singular banjo sounds (through an assortment of seven banjos spanning the recording) in service to the stories that their songs tell, with no studio gimmickry needed.

VIDEO: Béla Fleck plays The Imposter in the WQXR Café When Béla Fleck came to the WQXR Café, curious staff members began asking about his repertoire. Would he be playing Scarlatti or Scruggs? A Bach invention or a bluegrass breakdown? Fleck can do all of those things and more. Almost single-handedly, he established the banjo's capacity to move easily across genres stretching from the blues and bluegrass to contemporary jazz and world music. But being at a classical music station, Fleck, 55, wasn't about to miss an opportunity to show off his classical chops, so he focused on excerpts from The Imposter, a new banjo concerto he composed for the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. "You’ll just have to imagine the orchestra – we couldn’t afford them today," he joked, before launching into the repeated arpeggiated riffs of its second movement. The Imposter is dedicated to Earl Scruggs, the bluegrass pioneer who brought the banjo back to national prominence during the 1950s and 60s. Scruggs attended Fleck's premiere of the concerto in September 2011, six months before he passed away at age 88. "Earl Scruggs did so many things, from bringing the banjo out of the hills and back into the mainstream—because the banjo was a very popular instrument in the late 1800s and early 1900s," Fleck told host Jeff Spurgeon. "And then it pretty much was dying out in terms of the mainstream." Just as Scruggs covered rock tunes in the 1960s like Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" and played in rock and pop venues, Fleck has sought to push the limits of the instrument. In the 1980s Fleck played with the cutting-edge group New Grass Revival, known for its wild, virtuosic style, and by the '90s he was fronting his own band the Flecktones, which remains active today. Fleck edged his way into classical concert halls starting with "Perpetual Motion," a 2001 album of classical pieces for which he won a pair of Grammy awards. A few years later he collaborated with bassist Edgar Meyer and the Indian percussionist Zakir Hussain on a Triple Concerto, premiered with the Detroit Symphony and conductor Leonard Slatkin. Along with the concerto, Fleck's new recording features Night Flight Over Water, an original piece he plays with the string quartet Brooklyn Rider (a joint national tour is planned for the fall and winter). He said that while an orchestra can feel overwhelming in size, "with a string quartet, we’re all sitting very close to each other just as we would be in a bluegrass band." Does Fleck encounter much resistance to the idea of a banjo in classical settings, with requests to play something more "down home?" "That’s a stereotype about the banjo, that it can only be happy,” he said. "I've done some very sad banjo playing. And I’ve heard people play soulful, simple melodies on the banjo that make you want to cry. So it’s really about the musician."
