Talk 45   Mark 15:1-15  The Trial before Pilate Welcome to Talk 45 in our series on Mark's Gospel. Today we're looking at Mark 15:1-15 where Jesus is on trial before Pilate. We'll begin by reading the whole passage.   1 Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.   2 "Are you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. 3 The chief priests accused him of many things. 4 So again Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of." 5 But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.   6 Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7 A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8 The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. 9 "Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate, 10 knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.   11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. 12 "What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?" Pilate asked them. 13 "Crucify him!" they shouted. 14 "Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!" 15 Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.   Mark's account of this trial is much shorter than the accounts in the other Gospels, but this passage reveals very clearly three things: 1.     The continued determination of the Jewish leaders to have Jesus crucified 2.     The total commitment of Jesus to the way of the cross 3.     The complete moral failure of Pilate to do what was right. The continued determination of the Jewish leaders to have Jesus crucified This goes back as far as Mark 3:6 where they began to plot how they might kill Jesus for healing on the Sabbath day. Eventually, as we saw last time, after a mock trial before Caiaphas, they condemned him as worthy of death (14:64). So now they reach a decision. They have no power themselves to put him to death. So they hand him over to Pilate the Roman governor.   They demand that Jesus be crucified. But why crucifixion? The usual method of execution among the Jews was stoning (e.g. Achan in Joshua 7:25 and Stephen in Acts 7:58). Crucifixion was the Roman death penalty for rebellion. It was reserved for foreigners and slaves. Roman citizens were executed by the more merciful means of decapitation. So why did the Jews ask for Jesus to be crucified? Probably because, although crucifixion was not a Jewish practice, the bodies of those who were stoned to death were sometimes hung on a tree until the evening as a public sign that they were under God's curse (Deuteronomy 21:23). Paul refers to this in Galatians 3:13 when he says that Jesus was made a curse for us when he died on the cross.   It seems likely, then, that the Jewish leaders wanted the people to believe that Jesus was not the Messiah some of them thought he was, but that he was really under God's curse. Another possibility, of course, is that they did it out of sheer spite because they envied him (v10) and hated him so much.   But, whatever their motivation, to achieve their end Mark simply tells us that they accused him of many things (v3). Luke 23, however, gives us a bit more detail:   …they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Christ, a king." 3 So Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. 4 Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no basis for a charge against this man." 5 But they insisted, "He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here."   So the charges were: ·      Opposing payment of taxes to Caesar ·      Claiming to be Christ, a king ·      Stirring up the people or inciting people to rebellion – v14. Only one of these accusations had any basis in fact. Jesus did claim to be – indeed he was – the Christ, the Messiah, and he certainly was a king. But, as he told Pilate in John 18:36 his kingdom was not of this world… my kingdom is from another place. Jesus had never incited people to rebellion, quite the opposite. And he had never opposed payment of taxes to Caesar. In fact, he had encouraged it.   And the only way he had stirred up the people was to love their enemies. And far from inciting people to rebellion, he taught them to do good to those who persecuted them. In fact, if anyone was guilty of stirring up the people, it was the chief priests. When Pilate wanted to release Jesus, they stirred up the crowd (v11) to demand that Jesus be crucified, and Pilate, fearing a riot, hands Jesus over to be crucified.   The total commitment of Jesus to the way of the cross We saw last time when we considered Jesus' trial before Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin that Jesus didn't defend himself, that he refused to answer the charges brought against him, and  that only when put under oath did he confess the truth as to who he really was. He knew it would lead to his death, even death on a cross, but he knew that the shedding of his blood was the only way to atone for our sins.   And that, of course, was his motivation when he conducted himself in much the same way when on trial before Pilate. There's a distinct feeling of déjà vu here. Once again Jesus refuses to answer the accusations the Jews are bringing against him and Pilate asks him:   Aren't you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of (v4).   But Jesus still makes no reply (v5). Again, he refuses to respond to their false accusations, but he will speak about who he is. When Pilate asks, Are you the king of the Jews? Jesus answers, Yes, it is as you say (v2). But John gives us a fuller picture. When Pilate asks the same question (18:34), Jesus replies:   36 My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place. 37… You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.   To which Pilate replies, What is truth? but doesn't wait for an answer. Little did he know that the personification of truth was standing right in front of him!   And in John 19:9, when Pilate asks Jesus, Where do you come from?, Jesus remains silent, so Pilate retorts: Do you refuse to speak to me? Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you? (v10),   to which Jesus replies: You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above... (v11).   No human authority could destroy the Prince of Life. They were able to crucify him only because God himself allowed them to. And knowing that this was his Father's will, and the only means of our salvation, Jesus deliberately invites the death sentence by refusing to defend himself and by acknowledging who he is – the king, who had come into the world to bear witness to the truth, to whom everyone who is on the side of truth will listen. But, sadly, that was not something that Pilate was willing to do.   The complete moral failure of Pilate to do what was right Mark's account is, as usual, briefer than those in the other Gospels. Mark's summary of Pilate's failure is twofold: 1.     he knows that the chief priests have handed Jesus over to him out of envy (v10) 2.     it's because he wants to satisfy the crowd that he has Jesus flogged and hands him over to be crucified (v15). In other words, he knows that the accusations brought against Jesus are wrongly motivated, and, despite that, because he himself is wrongly motivated, he condemns Jesus to death. But in Luke and John, Pilate's guilt is compounded by the fact that Pilate knows that Jesus is innocent. In both these Gospels Pilate proclaims Jesus' innocence three times. Look at Luke 23. In verse 4 we read: Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no basis for a charge against this man." In verse 15 we read:             he has done nothing to deserve death. And in verse 22: For the third time he spoke to them: "Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty.   Now look at John 18 and 19 In 18:38             I find no basis for a charge against him. In 19:4 he says again:             I find no basis for a charge against him. And in 19:6 he says it again:             As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.   So there can be no doubt about it. Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent. His wife had even sent him a message: Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him (Matthew 27:19). And yet, despite the fact that he knows Jesus is innocent, he has him flogged and hands him over to be crucified.   But that is not all. Another aspect of Pilate's failure is his refusal to accept responsibility. As the Roman governor he enjoyed a privileged position. But privilege carries with it responsibility. It was Pilate's responsibility to judge fairly in these matters, but throughout the whole story we see him trying to pass the buck.   First, we see him trying to pass the matter back to Sanhedrin. In John 18:31 he says: Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law. But they object saying: But we have no right to execute anyone.   Next, he attempts to get King Herod, who was in Jerusalem at the time, to deal with the case (Luke 18:6-12). Herod agrees that Jesus has done nothing to deserve death, but the Jews are insistent that Jesus be crucified.   Then Pilate tries to pass the responsibility over to the crowd, by offering according to the custom at the Passover to release to them a prisoner of their choosing, but they choose Barabbas rather than Jesus – as might have been obvious to Pilate bearing in mind the hostility of the crowd to Jesus (Matthew 27:15-21).   And finally, having exhausted all options, he takes water and washes his hands in front of the crowd, saying, I am innocent of this man's blood. It is your responsibility (Matthew 27:24). So who was responsible for the death of Jesus? Was it Judas who betrayed him, or Peter who denied him, or all the disciples who deserted him, or Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin, or Herod or Pilate, or the Roman soldiers who crucified him? Surely the answer is ALL OF THE ABOVE. They must all bear some measure of guilt. But ultimately the judgment lies with God alone.   But are they the only guilty ones? Or are we ourselves also to blame? Jesus' death was necessary to atone for our sins as well as theirs. Let's not, like Pilate, refuse to take responsibility for our actions. Let's not pretend we are innocent, when we know we are not. Let us rather acknowledge our weaknesses, our failings, our faithlessness, our shortcomings, our sin. Forgiveness was available to all those responsible for the death of Jesus if only they would admit their guilt and believe in him. Some, like Peter and the disciples who forsook Jesus, did just that. The others, as far as we know, did not. Let's not make the same mistake. God's promise in 1 John 1:9 still holds good:   If we confess our sin, he is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.   Prayer.

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho.  Ross Valory always had pieces of music tucked away that he had written, although songwriting contributions to Journey slipped away after the first three “experimental” albums. As an original member of the multi-platinum juggernaut of “Don't Stop Believin'” fame, bassist Valory concentrated on shaping the rhythm section and contributing his baritone vocals to the background blend. In 1995, VALORY began sorting through his files and polishing up some of his old notes. In between Journey tour dates, he pulled together a tight-knit group of collaborators and slowly began to finish what he started. After a lifetime in music, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer etched his first solo album, All of the Above, released in April this year. The nine tracks on the album represent the full maturity of Valory's musical gifts, cutting a broad swath through the instrumental territory the music travels. He plays keyboards, guitar, and, of course, many basses in a display of cultivated virtuosity across a palette far broader than could be found in his work with Journey. He is stepping out from behind his bass and, for the first time in his more than half-century as a professional musician, representing his vision and his compositions. Valory, who spent most of his life as a member of Journey, has no regrets. He counts his blessings at having spent an amazing career with a remarkable group of musicians who succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Valory brings a lifetime in music to his solo excursions. All of the Above, a true labor of love, represents a culmination of his experience, at the same time as it points to the future. “Whatever came into my ears and brain came out in various ways,” he said. “I have been revisiting material that has been piling up over the years off and on and carrying it forward.” Please welcome rock and roll hall of famer… bass guitarist, singer, songwriter most recognized for playing with the legendary Journey …ROSS VALORY to Interviewing the Legends …   PURCHASE THE MOST RECENT RELEASE BY ROSS VALORY Entitled ALL OF THE ABOVE Available at amazon music “ROSS VALORY'S NEW SOLO ALBUM ENTITLED ‘ALL OF THE ABOVE' IS TRANSCENDENT AND RIVETING! John Hall is a founding member of the band Orleans and one of the main instigators of the No Nukes and MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) movements. He's been intimately involved in promoting social change and environmental advocacy, both as a private citizen and as an elected representative in Congress. John was studying piano at 5, playing French horn, guitar bass and drums by 12. He started playing in the clubs of Greenwich Village by 18 and at 21 wrote and directed music for a Broadway and Off-Broadway play. He then worked on numerous projects including Seals and Crofts' album Down Home. He toured with Taj Mahal and when he came home, started the band that would become Orleans in 1972. Moving to Woodstock NY with his wife Johanna, the pair began writing together. They had major hits ‘Dance With Me' and ‘Still The One', songs that have garnered 9 million terrestrial airplays and hundreds of millions of streams. John has also co-written songs for Janis Joplin, Millie Jackson, Bonnie Raitt, The Tymes, Chaka Khan and Chet Atkins among others. He co-founded the group Musicians United for Safe Energy and helped organise the 1979 No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden. His song 'Power' was its anthem, performed and recorded there by the Doobie Brothers with James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, Carly Simon, Nicolette Larson, Phoebe Snow, and many more. That song was also sung by Peter Paul and Mary, Pete Seeger and others. John's guitar playing was featured on albums by Browne, Raitt, Carly Simon, Little Feat and more. In the 90s the John Hall Band recorded two LPs: Search Party and All Of The Above, which contained the AOR and MTV staple Crazy (Keep On Fallin').  Environmental activism led John to serve on several boards. In 2006 he was elected to the US House of Representatives and also served on the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. Returning to private life in 2011, John continued to perform and record with Orleans and as a solo artist. During the pandemic, he wrote and recorded songs for his latest CD “Reclaiming My Time.” John Hall joins us this week as special guest to share the stories (and the music) from his life. Andrew Wilson has been in therapy for decades.  PTSD from the Vietnam War, a war he never wanted to be a part of, riddled Andrew's soul. Andrew is a Vietnam veteran, and, almost half a century later, Andrew cannot completely forgive himself for his role as soldier in this controversial war.  Andrew describes himself as a young coward, unable to stand up for his beliefs as Mohammad Ali did all those years ago.   In this raw episode, Andrew talks about the horrors of the Vietnam War; the rampant drug use; the confusion, guilt, and the ensuing PTSD that plagued him relentlessly. But this is also a story of overcoming demons through the forgiveness of Andrew's savior, Jesus Christ.  Andrew is a participant in the "New Revolution," a movement to spread the beliefs of the Founding Fathers regarding this grand experiment we call America. Andrew does not see a dark future for America, but a bright future as we come together, united in the goodness of freedom and support of our marvelous republic. Andrew is an accomplished musician and was a member of different bands in his young adult years.  As a part of the "All Of The Above" band, Andrew wrote the song, "The War Is Over."  It was a song written for those who served during the Vietnam War.  You can find the recording on YouTube.  The War Is Over  It is a poignant reminder of the trials our military endured during and after this controversial war. Andrew Wilson spends his time helping other veterans deal with the mental scars of war.

WELCOME BACK TO THE DOCS2DADS PODCAST. SCOTT,  THE TODDLER YEARS CAN BE VERY NEGATIVE AND PARENTS CAN FIND THEMSELVES SAYING ‘NO' LIKE 100 TIMES A DAY AND THAT IS WHERE I AM RIGHT NOW. HOW CAN I GET TO A PLACE WHERE I DON'T HAVE TO SAY NO SO OFTEN? IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY INTERACTION I HAVE WITH MY CHILD IS NEGATIVE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS QUESTION. THIS IS A VERY COMMON CHALLENGE FOR PARENTS AND I WOULD SAY THAT THERE ARE THREE MAIN CATEGORIES OF ‘NO'S AND GETTING FAMILIAR WITH HOW OFTEN YOU USE EACH KIND CAN BE USEFUL. I CATEGORIZE THEM AS SAFETY NO'S PRACTICAL NO'S AND ANNOYED NO'S.WORK TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR POSITIVE INTERACTIONS. SPENDING TIME TOGETHER BUILDING SOMETHING, WHERE THEY CAN'T DO IT “WRONG” AND THEY CAN BE CREATIVE AND EXPLORE. IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION THAT YOU WANT ANSWERED ON THE SHOW, PLEASE REACH OUT VIA SOCIAL MEDIA OR SEND US AN EMAIL AT DOCS2DADSPOD@GMAIL.COM. WE'D LOVE TO HEAR YOUR QUESTION AND HELP OTHER DADS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH THE SAME ISSUES.THERE'S SOMETHING THAT'S BEEN ON MY HEART LATELY THAT I HOPE WILL HELP SOME OF YOU WHO ARE GOING THROUGH A TOUGH SEASON.  PEOPLE IN THE MIDWEST TALK ABOUT THE SEASONS AS SOMETHING THEY LOVE ABOUT LIVING HERE. I DIDN'T REALLY UNDERSTAND THAT AFTER MOVING FROM PHOENIX WHERE WHAT WE LOVED WAS SUNSHINE!! BUT I HAVE DEVELOPED A SENSE OF WHY THEY LOVE SEASONS. NOT THAT EACH ONE IS GREAT, BUT THERE ARE TIMES WHEN LIFE IS TOUGH AND THIS HELPS YOU APPRECIATE THE GOOD TIMES MORE. I KNOW A LOT OF MY FELLOW DADS ARE GOING THROUGH CHALLENGING TIMES RIGHT NOW AND I JUST WANT TO OFFER SOME ENCOURAGEMENT.MANY TIMES, DADS IN PARTICULAR FEEL THE NEED TO “TOUGH IT OUT” OR “GO IT ALONE”  DURING CHALLENGING SEASONS. BUT THERE ARE TIMES WHEN WE NEED HELP.  WE SHOULD SEEK ADVICE FROM PEOPLE WHO WE TRUST.SOMETIMES THESE SEASONS CORRELATE WITH CHALLENGES WITH FEEDING OR SLEEPING AND THEY CAN FEEL LIKE FOREVER: EVERY MEAL, EVERY NAP CAN TURN INTO AN EXPLOSION.  APPROACH THESE CHALLENGES USING TEAMWORK. FINALLY, TRY SHAKING UP THE ROUTINE. DO DAILY CHECK-INS WITH YOURSELF TO DETERMINE WHAT YOU NEED TO CARE FOR YOURSELF SO YOU CAN SHOW UP FOR YOUR FAMILY.  DO YOU NEED MORE SLEEP? EXERCISE? PRAYER AND MEDITATION? ALL OF THE ABOVE? ONE OF MY FAVORITE QUOTES COMES FROM ST. FRANCIS DE SALES "EVERYONE NEEDS HALF AN HOUR OF PRAYER EACH DAY UNLESS THEY ARE BUSY - THEN THEY NEED AN HOUR." IT IS WHEN WE LEAST HAVE TIME FOR SELF-CARE THAT WE MUST FIND A WAY TO MAKE TIME FOR IT.  WORK WITH YOUR PARTNER TO PROTECT TIME FOR ONE ANOTHER. MAYBE YOU NEED A DATE NIGHT TO RECONNECT WITH YOUR PARTNER. MAKE A DAILY HABIT OF GRATITUDE AROUND YOUR PARTNER AND KIDS. SOME OF MY FAVORITE CONVERSATIONS WITH MY WIFE ARE SHARING FUNNY STORIES ABOUT THINGS OUR KIDS DID THAT MADE US SMILE. IT CAN REALLY PULL ME OUT OF A RUT.  TOUGH SEASONS WILL PASS WITH PATIENCE AND INTENTIONAL ACTIONSEEK SUPPORT AND ADVICE FROM OTHERS IN YOUR LIFE WHO MIGHT HELP YOU ADDRESS YOUR BEHAVIOR, RATHER THAN VENTING OR COMPLAINING ABOUT OUR FAMILIESSHAKE UP YOUR ROUTINE TO INCLUDE A SELF-CARE ROUTINE EITHER FOR YOURSELF, YOUR PARTNER OR BOTH  TRY TO DEVELOP A GRATITUDE ROUTINE THAT YOU SHARE WITH YOUR PARTNER TO HELP YOU FIND THE POSITIVE AND THE JOY, EVEN IN THE ROUGH DAYS.Thanks to Phil Rabon, D2D Producer

Jonathan Pentland was arrested on Wednesday morning, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said in a news conference. He has been released from jail on a personal recognizance bond, according to jail records. "It is a very disturbing video. It is one that we are not going to tolerate or condone in Richland County," Lott said at Wednesday's news conference. The video, which authorities say shows Pentland pushing, threatening and yelling at a young Black man, did not capture the events leading up to the confrontation or the full exchange between Pentland and the Black man. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/atttm/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/atttm/support

Paralyzed By Overwhelm? Here's Why You Need a North Star

NEEDING A NORTH STAR One of my biggest challenges as a new teacher was figuring out what to prioritize. Given my huge to-do list, I fell into overwhelm and, as much as I hate to admit it, was often paralyzed into not taking any action, because I didn’t know which thread to pull first. I realized that I needed to take a bigger picture approach to set my priorities. I couldn’t base them on the granular, day-to-day responsibilities. To combat my overwhelm, I needed a big picture, values-based north star. HOW TO CHOOSE A NORTH STAR The issue was, which north star to pick? Was it connecting with my students? Creating relationships with colleagues? Communicating with parents? Pleasing my administrators? Jumping into leadership roles to make a place for myself at a district-level? Making sure my students left my classroom knowing what they needed to know? My knee-jerk response was: ALL OF THE ABOVE, of course! But that was a recipe for crazy-making – no matter how much experience you have, but especially for beginning teachers. So, I took the opportunity to observe the extraordinary people I had the privilege to work with. There are two that I remember, who after watching, I knew had very different north stars. A TALE OF TWO TEACHERS Both these teachers were on the staff at a brand new middle school we helped open. They taught the same subject, at different grade levels. And by watching them, I discovered they each had two very different North Stars. Teacher #1 The first taught at the 7th-grade level. His students came to us as 8th graders, as we were both assigned to the gifted and talented teams in our respective grade levels. He was dynamic and engaging, and very active on the educational speaking circuit, as he had recently been awarded Teacher of the Year by a major U.S. entity. This meant that he was often out of the classroom to keynote different events. He was known for the grand, sweeping activities he did with students, from marching down the halls with his classes to demonstrate adjectives and adverbs, to conducting classroom video conferencing with scientists and other professionals out in the field. Pretty snazzy, right? And the administration – both at our campus and at the district level – ate it up. Teacher #2 The second teacher was his counterpart on my 8th-grade team. I had a front-row seat as I observed him get in the building early each morning, connect with as many kids as he could teach them the stuff he knew they needed to know – specifically, how to think for themselves – and get out at the end of the workday. He was a “why” guy – you know the one – the guy that challenges the different initiatives admins roll out, and refuses to jump into anything unless he can see how it correlates to what he’s doing in his classroom, for his students. Two Different North Stars Their North Stars were different. The first’s was to impress the administration and build his career on the speaking circuit. The second was to make sure his students learned everything they needed to know before they left his class. They had very different end goals in mind. YOU CAN DO IT ALL – BUT NOT AT THE SAME TIME The truth is, as a master teacher, you DO want to hit on most, if not all, of these – connecting with my students, creating relationships with colleagues, communicating with parents, pleasing my administrators, jumping into leadership roles, and making sure students leave the classroom knowing what they needed to know. The trick is understanding that you can’t do it all at one time. DISCOVERING YOUR NORTH STAR So, for beginning teachers, here is what I would say: list out all your north stars and put them in a hierarchy. That’s the first step in setting up boundaries for what you prioritize. To figure out how to rank your list, I recommend using the question that Gary Keller proposes in his book, The One Thing, but with a twist. Ask yourself, “which is the most important, that by mastering, will make everything else easier or unnecessary?” Once you have the first thing, then go through the rest of the list, asking yourself the same question. I would argue that in that list – Connecting with my students, creating relationships with colleagues, communicating with parents, pleasing my administrators, jumping into leadership roles, and making sure students leave the classroom knowing what they needed to know – the thing that would make everything else easier or unnecessary is: Making sure my students leave my classroom knowing what they need to know. WITH A NORTH STAR, EVERYTHING ELSE FALLS INTO PLACE If you make that your first priority, everything else is going to fall into place – you’ll connect with your students through the vehicle of your curriculum. The same goes for colleagues – by asking for advice and suggestions for best instructional practices, you’ll forge relationships. You’ll please your administrators because you’re doing your job. Leadership is (possibly) unnecessary at this point because you’re in a position to be a mentee rather than a mentor. Once you’ve mastered that, you can reevaluate your list and move on to mastering the next thing. POISED FOR THE MAIN THING With student learning as your North Star, you’re poised to keep the main thing the main thing – which is what we’re going to talk about in the next episode.

Small Biz Matters – a half hour program each week where you can work ON your business rather than IN it.with Alexi Boyd, broadcaster, advocate and small business owner.Date: 21 July 2020   There are certain types of stories we all listen to in times of crisis. Stories of strength when overcoming personal hardship, of growth in economic slumps, of great leadership when dealing with unusual situations, and those ones which inspire us when we simply don’t want to adult anymore.   Well this story will tick the box ALL OF THE ABOVE.   With literally no previous retail experience Karen Edbrooke started Big Girls Don’t Cry Anymore, using extraordinary work ethic and desire to assist women, it is now  a rare success story in a weird world of retail closures. Founded before social media and online sales, she has been forced to adapt not only the way she sells to clients but how she interacts with them. Her team has completely changed, her products have evolved, and her business is a great example of how the retail world is now survival of the fittest.   Welcome to the show Karen.   Topics we’ll be covering: Growing your online sales Where was the starting point? Did you divert away from your strategy or start over in the crisis? Socials – did you increase your budget? employing the right people & the ideal worker who can adapt top tips on finding the right fit Passionate about upskilling retail workers in IT what the industry leaders can do to improve the candidates Helping the local business community mentored other female entrepreneurs using her space to support other businesses Operating in times of crisis Adjusting your mindset & staying focus on what you want to achieve, keeping your team focussed To find out more go to their website: https://brastogo.com.au/   About our Guest: Big Girls Don’t Cry Anymore was founded by Karen Edbrooke in Brisbane in 1992. Edbrooke got inspiration for the business whilst recovering from a serious car accident.  Edbrooke grew increasingly frustrated by the challenges that larger women faced in the fashion and lingerie industry.  She believed that mainstream lingerie manufacturers in Australia ignored the needs of larger women.  Upon realising that the Australian lingerie industry was ignoring a significant portion of the female population, Edbrooke decided to take action.   Founded before the birth of the internet and the existence of Facebook, the business has been forced to adapt, but has done so with immense success.    Big Girls Don’t Cry Anymore has a large social media following.  They currently have the largest social media following of any independent Lingerie Store in Australia. They currently have over 105,000 ‘followers’ on their Facebook page and hundreds of thousands of followers on other platforms.   Before her accident, Edbrooke was working at the National Australia Bank.  She never went to university and she is completely self-taught in business.  She uses her experience to teach others about how to start a business from scratch.   Edbrooke’s passion for her brand, extraordinary work ethic and desire to assist women to find the right fitting bra has helped her to create one of the country’s leading business success stories.  The business is now the most successful retailer of lingerie and swimwear for women of all sizes with customers across the nation and around the world.   Services are also offered virtually through virtual bra fittings, live streamed fashion parades and a number of other innovative offerings.

Some songs seem to spring out of nowhere, and then you take a deeper look and you realize that it's a cover, or a rewrite, or it's a re-release that flopped the first time. "Take On Me" by A-ha, it turns out, is in the All Of The Above category. It was re-written several times and re-recorded a couple of times, and released three times before it finally became the hit we know today. Click here to become a patron of the show. Select all that are true: Dating online is frustrating.  Dating online is isolating.  Dating online is boring.  Swiping is tedious and does not lead to anything meaningful.(If you're like us:  ALL OF THE ABOVE.)  Ever find yourself wondering if this is truly the only way to date?  I mean, your friends and family must know at least one single person, right?  Maybe two?  And if so, why the hell can't they just hook a girl up already?! My 1:1 guest this month, Renee-Michele, and I discuss why exactly setting up your friends has fallen by the wayside in today's culture and more importantly, what we can do about it (Friend-of-a-Friend #single picnic, anyone?).  We also end up having a really important detour convo with our VOP Lee.   A small heads up:  To give context to his experience with matchmaking, Lee brings up a past experience with a woman he was in a relationship with who experienced vaginismus, a condition involving a muscle spasm in the pelvic floor muscles that makes it extremely painful, difficult, or impossible to have sexual intercourse or even insert a tampon.  While this condition is uncommon, and a result of various factors such as menopause, radiation, or gynecological surgery, it can also be a result of prior sexual trauma.  If this conversation feels particularly triggering to you, please proceed with caution.  Because we don't discuss any of this woman's surrounding circumstances, we're unable to address the issue with any real medical reference; however, I thought it was important to leave this topic in our episode because of the wider relation to our conversations around dating.  Sexual health issues are a large part of dating and are rarely - if ever - talked about with honesty and sensitivity.  If you'd like to learn more about vaginismus or other sexual health issues, we encourage you to visit https://www.womenshealth.gov/ or to speak to your gynecologist.

First things first... something is buggy with the audio in the beginning of this episode, but I wasn't going to trash the whole thing because of it. Just bear through it. Otherwise, this is episode 180 of JRP DAILY which means we are (roughly) halfway through our journey to 365 days in a row of podcasting! It has been shown that most startup podcasts don't even make it to the ten episode mark. This is the first podcast that I started and we just hit 180 episodes in 180 days. I'd have to say that that's an accomplishment. More importantly, I could not have gotten this far without the few of you that show up every single day (or at least every single week), the amazing guests that have agreed to come on, Gerard, or the other businesses that help me produce the show! So huge thanks to ALL OF THE ABOVE in helping make this thing possible. Lastly, just because we are halfway there does not mean that I am going to slack off. We still have a long way to go, and we are going to make it to that 365 mark in due time. Even then, I probably still won't stop. So stay with me through this journey, and say that you were there when JRP DAILY was new. We are still just getting started. ---------- Justin Phillips: Instagram: @jrpbusiness and @jjustinrp Twitter: @jjustinrp Facebook: JUSTINRP (@jrpbusiness) YouTube: JUSTINRP Website: https://justinrp.net/
