‘I'm Pro-Humanity': One Palestinian's Call for Peace in the Face of Tragedy Like a lot of people, journalist Asal Ehsanipour has been in a state of despair since the latest war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7. One of the only times she's found comfort was at a San Francisco Jewish Community Center event with Israeli and Palestinian speakers who've lost a loved one to the ongoing conflict. One of the speakers was a man who'd moved from Gaza and now lives in the Bay Area. Coming to California opened up his thinking about embracing our shared humanity – even during times of war.  'It is Possible to Love People and Disagree': For These Two Friends, Hard Conversations Are Key Right Now As the war continues, Californians are coming together and having tough interfaith conversations in groups like the Jewish-Muslim organization the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom. SHOW NOTES: https://jewishbooks.blogspot.com/2023/10/am-yisrael-chai-tammar-stein.html On October 7, 2023, the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur war, the terrorist group Hamas launched a brutal attack against Israel, murdering and kidnapping civilians young and old as well as striking military targets on multiple fronts. At the time of writing, Israel is at war. With Israel on my mind and in my heart, I went back and listened to Tammar Stein's 2017 interview on The Book of Life about her middle grade novel, The Six Day Hero, which is about the 1967 Six Day War. I thought you might like to hear it too. FYI, in 2020 Tammar published a companion book, Beni's War, about the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Both books are excellent. I left the original "tune in next time" teaser on the end of the recording because I found it moving. It was Fawzia Gilani-Williams, author of Yaffa and Fatima, Shalom Salaam, dedicating her episode to the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom because of their message of peace. We also hear from members of the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom, including its executive director, Tahija Vikalo. Like many people of her generation, Janet was raised with little religious instruction, due to her parents' desire to be American. After some exploration into other faiths, she decided in her 20s to learn about the Judaism of her roots. It has been a long journey. She considers herself a JewBu – incorporating elements of both Judaism and Buddhism, generally the ritual and holidays of the former and philosophy of the latter, along with some meditation practice when faced with a challenging situation. Besides her personal journey, Janet spent years developing and leading programs and dialogues bridging religious and other differences. Youth LEAD and the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom are two she speaks of. Highlights:·       The three Cs of dialogue: Curiosity, Courage, and Compassion.·       Even after years of training and experience, we make mistakes and react instinctively.·       Speaking with people who are different is challenging. Using a structure all agree to is critical. ·       Dialogue is the foundation, letting us see each other's humanity, but action is then necessary to improve the world.  ·       Jewish values of tikkun olam, repairing the world, and tzedakah, charity, inform her social justice work.References:Prof. Diana Eck, Harvard University, Pluralism Project – https://pluralism.orgEboo Patel, Interfaith America – https://www.interfaithamerica.org/people/eboo-patel/Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom – https://sosspeace.orgRoots – https://www.friendsofroots.netCombatants for Peace – https://cfpeace.orgSocial Media links for Méli:Talking with God Project –  https://www.talkingwithgodproject.orgLinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/melisolomon/Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100066435622271Follow the podcast! The Living Our Beliefs podcast offers a place to learn about other religions and faith practices. Everyday Conversations on Race for Everyday People

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 13, 2022 50:51

In this exciting and dramatic conversation on race, I'm joined by Amr Awadallah former VP of developer relations for Google Cloud, and Sara Speer Selber, CEO of Quest Essential. Amr, a Muslim who was born in Egypt, and Sara, a Jewish woman born in the US. We talk about the ability to change and the need to allow people to change instead of canceling them for what they thought or did in the past.   Amr was fired from Google after he wrote a paper called “We Are One,” about how he used to not like Jewish people because of what he had heard about Jewish people as he grew up. But after meeting and getting to know Jewish people and even finding out he had Jewish DNA he changed his thinking.  Some other employees at Google accused him of antisemitism. We talk about social justice, the need for education, and the importance of eradicating racism, antisemitism, homophobia, Islamophobia, and other hate, it's hypocritical and dangerous to “cancel,” fire, or ban people who have changed. If we can't admit to past mistakes without fear, it will be almost impossible to get other people to let go of racism, etc.   Sara Speer Selber shares how she was raised to agree with everything Israel did and not like Muslims. After getting to know Muslim women and hearing about a group called Salaam Shalom which brought Muslim and Jewish women together, she began to change her thinking. She went on to help start a chapter of Salaam Shalom in Texas where she lives.   Key topics: [4:42] Amr tells his story of what he used to think about Jewish people and what happened to make him change and get to know Jewish people.   [9:07] What happened when Simma was part of a Jewish-Palestinian dialogue group and the support she got from Palestinians when her partner died. The Palestinians in the group attended the Jewish services.   [10:39] The stories Amr heard about Jewish people that shaped his thinking growing up.   [12:10] How Sara met Amr when they were both on a Clubhouse for two weeks where Palestinians and Israelis shared their stories. Sara heard Amr talk about what happened to him at Google and she reached out to him.   [17:06] Amr was in a deep depression about being fired and when Sara reached out to him it lifted his spirits. He talks about how he was impacted by all the Jewish people who reached out to him.   [34.02] Why we all need to work together against climate change which can kill us all. When we hate and refuse to interact it stops us from moving forward and we can all be destroyed.   [37.27] How the Muslim community came together in Texas to support the Rabbi and worshippers in the synagogue when people were taken hostage.   Guests Bio Sara Speer Selber, Founding Partner of QuestEssential, has more than 40 years of experience managing people and organizations for excellence and success. Her career with for profit and non-profit entities has been characterized by entrepreneurial innovation and has been recognized repeatedly by professional and community groups for her business achievements and many contributions to the welfare of others.   Dr. Amr Awadallah is the CEO and cofounder of ZIR AI, a company that is revolutionizing how we seek knowledge across all languages of the world. He previously served as VP of Developer Relations for Google Cloud until July 2021. Prior to joining Google in Nov 2019, Amr co-founded Cloudera in 2008 and as Global CTO, he spent 11 years working closely with enterprises around the world on how to ingest and extract value from big data (he famously coined the terms “schema-on-read vs schema-on-write”).

How can we move beyond distrust and divisions towards understanding and solidarity? What can we learn from women of different faiths who have united against hate?  How do we really work to eliminate hate in our communities?  JCo-Leaders of the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom, Atiya Aftab and Sheryl Olitzky joined filmmakers and a panel of leading changemakers for a live conversation. Stranger/Sister is the story of two ordinary women, one Muslim and one Jewish, who dare to believe they can join hands to stop the wave of hate. Overcoming a history of distrust between their two religions, they build a movement that turns strangers into sisters, challenging our assumptions about how to fight hate. Conversation with Asma Uddin, moderated by Nabila Mansoor How does a Muslim woman's perspective of the Divine shape a person's faith and commitment to religious liberty and social equity? Asma Uddin is at the forefront of this conversation, creating the space for women to make their faith their own. Uddin is the Director of Strategy for the Center on Islam and Religious Freedom. She is also the founder and editor-in-chief of altmuslimah.com, a highly praised web magazine dedicated to issues on gender and Islam. Uddin speaks and publishes widely on issues of national and international religious freedom, as well as gender and faith. Her work has been published by numerous law reviews and prominent university presses. She guest-edited a special issue of The Review of Faith & International Affairs and is co-editing a forthcoming book of essays by women who have faced religious persecution. She also serves on the Advisory Council for The Institute for Global Engagement's Center for Women, Faith and Leadership. A reception follows the program. Moderator Nabila Mansoor works with EmergeUSA, a civic engagement organization helping minority communities become politically active. Prior to joining EmergeUSA, Mansoor had a private law practice in the Sugar Land-area specializing in family law. Mansoor has been active in the community on several volunteer fronts – she currently serves as Secretary of AADT, Asian American Democrats of Texas and is on the board of Everest Academy, a Muslim school in the Southwest area. Mansoor is also a Muslim Leadership Initiative Fellow under the Shalom Hartman Institute, a program that invites American Muslims to explore how Jews understand Judaism and Israel. She is the Southwest co-lead of the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom, a women’s group working to build bridges and fight hate through a sisterhood of Muslim and Jewish women. Concept of the Divine series provides a unique opportunity for speakers to share how their personal concept of the Divine has changed over time and shaped their lives, their service to the community, and views about their place in the cosmos. As an organization committed to interfaith dialogue and engagement, this series offers an excellent opportunity to hear from people representing diverse faith communities and other sectors of society about this important topic.
