¿Alguna vez has sentido que no te entienden? Good morning! The anticipation for this week's episode is palpable. Unfortunately, we don't know what record we are covering today.   So, before we get to the album, we tentatively jump into a mosh pit of live concert discussion with some ticket-buying advice, a breakdown of Def Leppard's hits, and an address about whether it's okay to wear a band's T-shirt to a concert. We also celebrate a game-winning shot, relive the Olympic viewing experience, and order some meat thermometers for a B-to-B experience even Randy Moss would call a disgusting act. Rob, one big nut or one tiny nut?   Then at (57:00), the podcast gets stronger, and we become the best podcast about Kanye West and the 204th greatest album of all time, Graduation. We discuss the stadium rock influence on this album, the records that influenced Kanye, and whether this album changed perspectives on what is possible in rap music (at least according to Wikipedia).    Next week will be a wild world when we become the best Cat Stevens podcast and best Yusuf Islam podcast and discuss Tea for the Tillerman.

A wonderfully lush and layered debut, Mole is awash with ideas. Maryam Said's Poolblood project arrive with a truck full of ideas and a reverence for pop rock. Said's religious upbringing offered little access to secular music, though Yusuf Islam's (née Cat Stevens) gentle folk rock managed to slip through. A later embrace of artists like Fiona Apple, Nick Drake and Apples in Stereo, however, left an indelible imprint of the songwriting that populates this first LP. What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 20, 2021 43:16

A case could be made that Led Zeppelin IV is the biggest heavy metal album of all time.  However, "IV" isn't really the name of the album.  The actual title was four symbols, one selected by each band member.  The record company hated the idea for obvious reasons, but what they thought was "professional suicide" turned out to be the best selling album for the band and one of the top rated Rock albums of all time. The rollout of Led Zeppelin IV without a pronounceable title and without written information on the album sleeve was a reaction to their experience with the previous album.  Led Zeppelin III had been highly anticipated and a commercial success, but received several negative reviews from critics.  This response affected the band, particularly Jimmy Page.  Led Zeppelin stopped touring and returned to Headley Grange in Hampshire, England for recording the new material.  The relaxed environment of the country house was good for removing distractions and encouraging spontaneity. The result was both a commercial and critical success, and a defining album for heavy metal throughout the 70's.  Every track on this album would be played on AOR and hard rock radio stations.Folks, this is an album you need to hear in its entirety. Rock and RollThe second track on the album is now a rock and roll standard.  It came out of a jam session the band had while producing the album.  John Bonham started with a drum introduction from "Keep A-Knockin'" by Little Richard.  Jimmy Page adds a guitar riff inspired by Chuck Berry.  Ian Stewart, pianist for the Rolling Stones, joins on the song.  It is one of the few songs for which all four band members got writing credits.Four SticksA song for which the name doesn't match the lyrics, "Four Sticks" is so named because John Bonham used two sets of drumsticks - two sticks in each hand - while recording the song.  He recorded only two takes, and Jimmy Page said that "it was physically impossible for him to do another."Black DogAnother song for which the name doesn't appear in the lyrics, "Black Dog" received its name from a black Labrador retriever found wandering around Headley Grange mansion while they were recording.  The alternate a cappella vocals and start and stop instrumentation was inspired by Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well."Stairway to HeavenThis instantly recognizable epic is Led Zeppelin's signature song.  The band was setting out to create an epic when they wrote it, as they wanted a song to replace "Dazed and Confused" as the centerpiece of their concerts.  Amazingly, it did not chart because it was never released as a single.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture Diamonds Are ForeverBond...James Bond!  This Bond film was the last one with Sean Connery as James Bond before being replaced by Roger Moore. STAFF PICKS:Hallelujah by SweathogWayne leads off the staff picks a Christian rock crossover, similar to "Jesus Christ, Superstar" and "Godspell."  Sweathog was a band out of San Francisco which became a top opening act for groups like Black Sabbath, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Grand Funk Railroad.   Day After Day by BadfingerBrian's staff pick sounds like the Beatles, perhaps because George Harrison produced this album, and participates on guitar and backing vocals.  It tells the story of a boy daydreaming about a girl "looking out from my lonely room, day after day."Never Been to Spain by Three Dog NightRob's staff pick from Three Dog Night features Cory Wells on lead vocal duties.  Three Dog Night had three singers who would trade off on providing lead vocals.  This song was penned by folks singer-songwriter Hoyt Axton, and discusses places the singer has never been, but compares spots that might be good proxies for these locations.Peace Train by Cat StevensBruce finishes the staff picks with Cat Stevens' first top 10 hit in the U.S.  After converting to Islam and changing his name from Cat Stevens to Yusuf Islam, he performed the song as a call for a peaceful solution to the Iraq War, as well as playing it at the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize concert when Muhammad Yunus received the award for his work in micro-lending to the poor. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Scorpio by Dennis Coffey & The Detroit Guitar BandA funky instrumental from the film "Scorpio" takes us out of this podcast.  The song was on the charts this month, though the movie would not appear until 1973.

Cat Stevens er maður dagsins í Rokklandi. Árið 1970, fyrir hálfri öld sendi hann frá sér plötuna Tea for the Tillerman. Hann var 22 ára gamall - þetta var fjórða platan hans og hún hefur að geyma lög eins og Wild World, Where do the children play og Father and son t.d.

Yusuf Cat Stevens is a singer-songwriter who first enjoyed success more than 50 years ago. He was born Steven Demetre Georgiou in July 1948. His Greek Cypriot father and his Swedish mother ran a restaurant in the West End of London, and he helped out there from an early age. He also became interested in music, writing and singing his own songs, partly inspired by the success of The Beatles. Under the name Cat Stevens, he was just 18 when he had his first hit, and soon found himself on tour with Engelbert Humperdinck and Jimi Hendrix. His career came to a sudden halt in 1969, when he contracted tuberculosis and was forced out of the limelight for a year of recuperation. It was also a time of reflection. He emerged a changed man in 1970 - a sensitive singer-songwriter whose albums, including Tea for the Tillerman, and Teaser and the Firecat, sold millions of copies around the world. While enjoying fame and success, he also thought more deeply about religious faith, an interest which increased after he nearly drowned while swimming in the Pacific. He became a Muslim in 1977, changed his name to Yusuf Islam and walked away from music. He soon became one of the UK's most high-profile Muslims, and was often asked to comment about aspects of Islam. For two decades, he didn’t touch his guitar, but in 2006 he made a comeback with an album entitled An Other Cup. He has released three more albums since then and has recently recorded a new version of perhaps his best-known work, Tea for the Tillerman. Yusuf lives in Dubai with his wife Fawziah. Let’s take a deep dive into the musical world of Cat Stevens… His real name is a bit longer and more interesting, Steven Demetre Georgiou. In 1977, he changed his name yet again to Yusuf Islam when he became a Muslim. In 1979, he auctioned off his guitars and gave the money to charity in an effort to show his devotion to Islam He tells Uncut magazine that his girlfriend at the time helped him pick his most famous stage name: Cat Stevens. “Christine said to me one day ‘you look so much like a cat.’ That kind of stuck.” In 1968, Stevens contracted Tuberculosis. After a long recovery, he started writing more introspective songs that lead him to his signature folk sound and message. "I was smoking a lot,” he tells Mojo Magazine. “Dope as well but mostly cigarettes. So then along came this disease and I was stuck with it. It was a kind of godsend in a way for me. That period was my blossoming into who I wanted to be." The late 60s and early 70s were Stevens’ heyday, hitting success with songs like Father and Son, Wild World, Moonshadow, Peace Train, and Morning Has Broken Not only can he sing and write, he can paint as well. His artwork graces the front of three of his albums In 2001, he released a boxed set containing 79 tracks, most of which he recorded before becoming a Muslim. He donated the proceeds to charity in light of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America Yusuf continues to perform today, mostly without any interest in commercial success, but instead for enlightenment and to assist his religion. 10,000 Maniacs special with Steve Gustafson talking about life in music, recording, the creative process & much much more The band was formed as Still Life in 1981 in Jamestown, New York, by Dennis Drew (keyboards), Steven Gustafson (bass), Chet Cardinale (drums), Robert Buck (guitar and Newhouse's ex-husband) and Teri Newhouse (vocalist and Buck's ex-wife). Gustafson invited Natalie Merchant, who was 17 at the time, to do some vocals. John Lombardo, who was in a band called The Mills (along with brother guitarist/vocalists Mark Liuzzo and Paul Liuzzo and drummer Mike Young) and used to play occasionally with Still Life, was invited to join permanently on guitar and vocals. Newhouse and Cardinale left the band in July, and Merchant became the main singer. Various drummers came and left. The band changed its name to Burn Victims and then to 10,000 Maniacs after the low-budget horror movie Two Thousand Maniacs!. They performed as 10,000 Maniacs for the first time on Labor Day, September 7, 1981, with a line-up of Merchant, Lombardo, Buck, Drew, Gustafson, and Tim Edborg on drums. Edborg left and Bob "Bob O Matic" Wachter was on drums for most of the 1981 gigs. Tired of playing cover songs—though their first notable American hit was a cover of the Cat Stevens hit "Peace Train"—the band started to write their own music, usually with Merchant handling the lyrics and Lombardo the music. In March 1982, with Jim Foti on drums, the band recorded an EP album called Human Conflict Number Five. More gigs followed in 1982. During this time they lived in Atlanta, Georgia for a short while at the encouragement of friends who said that many gigs were available there. Discouraged by the lack of actual gigs, and by having to sell plasma and rake leaves to buy food, the band moved back to Jamestown in November 1982 to regroup. At the beginning of 1983, Jerry Augustyniak joined the band as their permanent drummer. The Maniacs met Augustyniak when they played in Buffalo, New York, where he was in a punk band called The Stains. Between March and July, the band recorded songs for a second record, Secrets of the I Ching, their debut full-length album, which was pressed by Mark Records for the band's own label Christian Burial Music. The record was well received by critics and caught the attention of respected BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel in London. One song, "My Mother the War", turned out to be a minor hit in the United Kingdom, and entered the independent singles chart. The band toured extensively during 1983 and 1984, and played gigs in the UK. Peter Leak, an Englishman living in New York City, became interested in the band, made contact and was made their manager. With the help of Leak and Elektra Records A & R man Howard Thompson, 10,000 Maniacs signed to Elektra in November 1984. In the spring of 1985, they recorded their second full-length album, The Wishing Chair, in London at Livingston Studios, with Joe Boyd as producer. Though the album was not a blockbuster hit, its status as the band's major label debut did win it some notice, and it received significant critical acclaim. Co-founder Lombardo left 10,000 Maniacs during a rehearsal on July 14, 1986. The remaining five members started recording a new album in Los Angeles with Peter Asher as the producer. In My Tribe, a more pop-rock oriented record, was released on July 7, 1987. The album stayed on the charts for 77 weeks, peaking at No. 37, and established a large U.S. audience for the group. It was also well received in the UK. The album originally contained "Peace Train". It was removed from subsequent pressings after Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam) made comments implying he agreed with a death Fatwa against author Salman Rushdie. 10,000 Maniacs' next album, 1989's Blind Man's Zoo, hit No. 13 and went gold, further increasing the group's following. In May 1989, the British music magazine NME reported that 10,000 Maniacs had won the songwriter category prize at the New York Music Awards. In 1990, with the help of Lombardo, they remastered their first two records, Human Conflict Number Five and Secrets of the I Ching, and released them as a compilation called Hope Chest: The Fredonia Recordings 1982-1983. Lombardo and Mary Ramsey, who had formed a folk act called John & Mary, opened gigs for the Maniacs on the Hope Chest Tour in 1990. In 1991, during the recordings of a new album, Merchant revealed to the other members that she would be leaving 10,000 Maniacs for a solo career in two years' time. The new album, Our Time in Eden, was released on September 29, 1992. In 1993, the band performed at the MTV Inaugural Ball for President Clinton in January and on MTV Unplugged on April 21. Merchant announced her departure from the band on MTV on August 5, 1993, saying she "didn't want art by committee anymore." The MTV Unplugged album was released on October 26, 1993. "The last 10,000 Maniacs gig was the first time I'd got drunk in nearly two years," Merchant later recalled. "I laughed a lot and threw lots of flowers out of the hotel window."

The primary concept we took away was that our emotions can play a positive role at work for a variety of reasons, and the second is about how to deal with the limits or restrictions that we sometimes place on ourselves in the workplace. We talked about how these approaches impact our productivity and our emotional health. In our grooving session, Kurt and Tim discussed psychological safety, how emotions are contagious, to loss aversion and its relationship to our naturally negative brains, to William Kahn’s ground-breaking work on psychological safety, to Vittorio Gallese’s work on mirror neurons and Kurt and Tim’s first-ever song based on a behavioral science principle: Loss Aversion. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Liz and please refer us to a friend if you like this episode.  Links Liz Fosslien: http://fosslien.com/ Liz & Mollie’s book: No Hard Feelings: The secret power of embracing emotions at work.   https://www.lizandmollie.com/book/ Liz’s article on how economists say I Love You: 14 ways an economist says I love you  http://fosslien.com/heart/  National Affairs: https://www.nationalaffairs.com/ Project Aristotle: https://rework.withgoogle.com/print/guides/5721312655835136/ Vittorio Gallese, PhD: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vittorio_Gallese William Kahn, PhD: “Psychological Conditions of Personal Engagement & Disengagement at Work” https://journals.aom.org/doi/abs/10.5465/256287 Thaler & Sunstein, Nudge: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nudge_(book) Loss Aversion (Kurt & Tim’s video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyeRNVSWJAI&t=4s Tears for Fears – “Shout” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye7FKc1JQe4 Bob Dylan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Dylan Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_Stevens   Kurt Nelson, PhD contact: email kurt@lanterngroup.com or Twitter @motivationguru or LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/kurtwnelson/   Tim Houlihan contact: email tim@behavioralchemy.com or Twitter @THoulihan or LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/tim-houlihan-b-e/     Subscribe to Behavioral Grooves: https://behavioralgrooves.podbean.com/

“Don't measure yourself against your Facebook or Youtube likes - instead ask yourself , "Will Allah be pleased with what I have done today?" ” - Zain Bhika We speak about everything with Zain Bhika from his Radio 702 competition to his ACE (Art of Creative Expression) workshops....Definitely one of the most inspiring interviews... Alhamdullillah. The opportunity to travel around the world and meet incredible artists like Yusuf Islam and Dawud Wharnsby, unlatched his understanding of what it truly means to be Muslim. It taught him to make the most of life before returning to our Creator, by being the best we can be and striving for social justice. He says that as Muslims, it’s our responsibility to give to those who don’t have anything, to take care of the poor, to smile at each other and “to make things better while you are here.” Zain has found that music and lyrics are a powerful unifier, it brings us closer together as Muslims around the world. He feels blessed that so many people resonate with his music, especially young children, who can often be heard singing along to his lyrics. Zain has a worldwide following of all ages yet he remains extremely humble. “We don’t earn our talents, Allah gives it to us,” he says.  His greatest life lesson: “Be true to yourself and keep the intention of whatever you’re doing real.” Zain relates that life is temporary and loss is inevitable, however the only constant is our Creator and returning to him. “We need to prepare to meet our Creator in the best of ways.” Enjoy it! This week on StoryWeb: Colin Higgins and Hal Ashby’s film, Harold and Maude. The 1971 film Harold and Maude is a cult classic, a romantic dark comedy preserved in the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry and ranked number 45 on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 Funniest Movies of All Time. Written by Colin Higgins and directed by Hal Ashby, it deserves every bit of the love its enamored fans have showered on it over the years. It’s an unlikely love story if ever there was one. Nineteen-year-old Harold meets his future paramour, seventy-nine-year-old Maude, at a funeral. You might expect me to say, “And not just any funeral.” But to both Harold and Maude, it is “any” funeral – for their shared joy, it turns out, is to attend funerals. Harold drives a Jaguar he’s converted into a hearse, and Maude quite literally zips around town in any car she can find. The pair hit it off, and before long, they’ve become lovers. Now if you’ve never seen Harold and Maude, you’re thinking, “What a bizarre-sounding film,” or “Why is Linda recommending something so outlandish?” In fact, you’re probably thinking both! But if you’ve seen Harold and Maude, you’re likely to have drunk the Kool-Aid, too. You’ve probably seen it more than once. You likely have fond memories of the whimsical passion Harold and Maude have for one another. And like me, you’re probably humming Cat Stevens’s song “If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out” right now! Written and recorded for the film, the song perfectly sums up Harold and Maude’s quirky but loving relationship. In short, I love Harold and Maude, and if you’ve seen it, I bet you do, too. Despite the fact that Harold and Maude love to go to funerals and despite the fact that Harold stages elaborate mock-suicides in his attempt to get his mother to notice him, the film is ultimately life-affirming. Though Maude is sixty years older than Harold, she teaches him about love and life – she is such a gift to this young man. And love, we are reminded, is a true gift in our lives, no matter when or where or how we find it. The best way to see this iconic film is to purchase The Criterion Collection’s Blu-ray edition, complete with high-definition digital restoration, a remastered stereo soundtrack, audio commentary by Hal Ashby, Nick Dawson, and Charles B. Mulvehill, audio excerpts of seminars by Hal Ashby and screenwriter Colin Higgins, an interview with songwriter Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), and a booklet featuring an essay by critic Michael Wood. For more on this outstanding film, read Mental Floss’s list of ten fun facts about Harold and Maude. The Criterion Collection offers its own list of ten facts about the film as well as a number of other resources. James A. Davidson’s book Hal Ashby and the Making of Harold and Maude provides a behind-the-scenes peak into the filmmaking process. And if you just can’t get enough, check out screenwriter Colin Higgins’s novelization of the film’s script. It will give you even more insight into the couple’s story. If you find you’ve fallen in love with the film, too, and want to fly your own freak flag, consider sporting a Harold and Maude T-shirt or using a Harold and Maude mouse pad! As Cat Stevens sings in the song and as Harold discovers when he meets Maude, there’s a million things to be, you know that there are! Visit thestoryweb.com/haroldmaude for links to all these resources and to watch the original trailer for Harold and Maude. Then watch a video interview with Yusuf Islam about writing the music for the film.
