Naomi Shihab Nye opens the talk reading a new, recently penned poem, Current Affairs. Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish then introduces himself and segways into the realities of his experiences growing up in Gaza, the Jabalia Camp, what he has seen and witnessed, the loss of his three daugthers and niece in 2009 from an Israeli tank shell (i.e., I Shall Not Hate) and his pride in his Palestinan heritage, family, and community. He shares his deep belief and conviction 'nothing is impossible in life.' He also expresses: Medicine as a great human equalizer Toward human rights, once people step away from the border of the hospitals, they become categorized and labeled 'Palestinian' or 'Israeli' If you believe in Humanity, we must all stand for all Human Rights is deeply tested in Gaza, people must stand up for human rights Advocate not for peace but for dignity, justice, freedom, and human rights for all: peace will follow when these conditions are cultivated Naomi shares her family history and the experiences of relocating after the Nakba. Naomi also shares: As a poet, every voice is important in the world, every voice represents humanity. Regarding Gaza, this is an overwhelming tragedy of sorrow The importance of actions based on one's convictions The power of the military industry complex to overide the voice of the majority and humanity's collective voice How can we be heard, how can we be listened to? Who is listening? The idea, our obligation is to our humanity, looking within our selves we recognize our humanity Dr Abuelaish shares his experiences as an author. The priority of Palestinians toward education. Human Rights, respect and dignity for all. What is our modern sense of responsibility and obligation toward our fellow humans, what is our modern sense of meaning, mission, and purpose. A human being is a human being [only] through another person. Truth telling as means of healing. The situation is Gaza and West Bank harms Israel deeply as well. Naomi shares Hibu Abu Nabab's poem, Not Just Passing. The political power and politics contrbuting to the crisis in Gaza and the West Bank. Dr. Abuelaish reviews the history of Gaza since 2000. And, Naomi closes with her poem, For Gaza The children are still singing They need & want to sing They are carrying cats to safe places Holding what they can hold Red hair brown hair yellow They will wear the sweater Someone threw away They will hope for something tasty You won't be able to own them Their spirits fly to safer worlds They planted seashells in the sand They never committed a crime A president pardons turkeys He pardons his own son He doesn't pardon children The children are still singing. RTL Today - In Conversation with Lisa Burke

"Killing and Starving children is not Jewish. Fighting antisemitism demands decoupling of Jews from Israel." Since many people don't have time to read full articles anymore, I want to start by linking to two poignant interviews I've had the privilege of conducting over the last few years: - Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, the first Palestinian doctor to work in an Israeli hospital: lost his wife to leukaemia aged just 43, leaving him with their 8 children. Just four months later, during the 2008-9 Gaza War, three of his daughters and one niece were killed. And yet Izzeldin has dedicated his life to using health as a vehicle for peace.  https://play.rtl.lu/shows/en/in-conversation-with-lisa-burke/episodes/n/1612726 - Bassam Aramin, Palestinian, and Rami Elhanan, Israeli, are members of The Parents Circle – Families Forum (PCFF), due to the most painful loss of their daughters at different times due to the intractable Israel and Palestine conflict. They have become 'brothers' and advocate constantly for solidarity and peace in their land. https://play.rtl.lu/shows/en/in-conversation-with-lisa-burke/episodes/n/2171062 Last week saw the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. It also saw the return of Palestinians to the north of Gaza. This juxtaposition of events hits hard. The 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz had 56 survivors of the camp in attendance; down from 200 survivors for the 75th anniversary. We are losing the voice of those who experienced violence, discrimination, hatred and genocide first hand in these camps of torture and death. Of course we must add it was not only Jews that suffered in these camps. Meanwhile, anti-semitism is on the rise since Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023 and the ensuing war in Gaza and Lebanon. This sudden attack on 7 October was not out of nowhere of course. It follows in a line of attacks on both sides, and in the greater region, over decades, despite various ‘agreements', ‘accords', political handshakes… nothing has yet brought peace. On my show this week I have four strong and learned voices on the region, the culture and the law: - Dalia Hader, a Palestinian living in Luxembourg who is asking for petition signatures here so that the Government of Luxembourg discusses this topic in the chamber: “Luxembourg must sanction Israel for its policies in Palestine.” https://www.petitions.lu/petition/3231 - Martine Kleinberg, President, Jewish Call for Peace a.s.b.l. - Dr. Michel Erpelding, International lawyer specialising in this region - Dr. Engy Ali, President of MSF Luxembourg Dalia Hader, is a Palestinian from Jerusalem but grew up primarily in Amman, Jordan. Like so many Palestinians, families often move if they have a choice as it becomes untenable to ‘live' and raise a family in Israel / Palestine. Current records show the state of Palestine to have about 5.5 million inhabitants. The Palestinian diaspora is numbered at about 7.4 million. About one third of Palestinians living in Palestine are under the age of 15; only about 3% live to be over 65. We discuss one definition of genocide with Dr. Michel Erpelding, which targets the killing of children to minimise population growth. Access to care and medication Dr. Engy Ali, President of Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF Luxembourg, is specialised in Critical Care medicine and public health, working for over 20 years in the medical and humanitarian field; 12 years with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors without Borders. She has worked in Bangladesh, Kenya, Somalia, Nigeria, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Mali, Mauritania, Haiti, Liberia, DRC, Philippines, Pakistan, Gaza and Europe.   The MSF team in Gaza have lost 9 members since 7 October 2023. This loss is deeply felt by the MSF family as they dedicate their lives to giving access to health to all, equally. ‘Access to care and medication' is, according to Dr. Ali, the driving force of MSF. Dr. Ali reminds us that MSF has been present in Gaza for years. She herself was working Gaza in 2020, trying to organise medical evacuation programmes for complex trauma cases (but then Covid 19 happened.) “Our humanitarian action in Gaza is guided by our core humanitarian principles of neutrality and impartiality, but we do not stay silent about humanitarian crises as in Gaza. We publicly speak out and report attacks on healthcare facilities, shortages of medical supplies, and obstacles to access care, ensuring that humanitarian needs are recognized.” The testimonials you hear in this interview are from from Nadia Abo Mallouh, MSF medical coordinator from Rafah, and Abu Abed, Deputy Medical Coordiantor. Impunity reinforces antisemitism Martine Kleinberg, President of Jewish Call for Peace (JCP) has worked unceasingly to increase the clamour of Jewish voices that do not want to be connected with the direction of Israel's government and want to work with Palestinians for peace. This is a growing movement around the world with the Jewish Voice for Peace, and the Not in My Name refrain. https://jewishcallforpeace.lu Martine is herself trained in conflict resolution and prevention.  JCP is a founding Member of the European Jews for Palestine launched in October 2024, with more than 20 organisations in 14 European countries, a member of Global Jews for Palestine, and a Member of Luxembourg Collectives for Palestine. On 1 February Martine organised a conference to discuss: “Exploiting Memory: the Holocaust and the distortion of antisemitism” In organising this event, Martine faced cultural decision makers in Luxembourg who did not want their venue associated with such open conversations. Neimënster said no; the Culture Bar said yes. Neimenster said this event did not “correspond to their values…the title leads to negative interpretations against associations and institutions partnered with Neimënster. As a public establishment we remain a neutral entity and cannot be associated with this type of event” Martine is extremely clear in her own reckoning of what the Israeli government are doing to use Judaism as an instrument of war: “I refuse the instrumentalization of my Jewish identity for colonialist supremacist purpose, that has nothing to do with Judaism. My commitment is the solidarity with the oppressed and deconstruction of antisemitic prejudices.” Martine believes strongly that there is a “weaponization of the Holocaust memory and antisemitism by Israel, to gain impunity, which is destroying international law”. “Fighting antisemitism demands decoupling of Jews from Israel.” Martine Kleinberg is aghast on why almost no religious leaders, of all religions, cannot speak out with clarity that the violence against a trapped civilian population in Gaza is indefensible and wrong Does International Law have any power anymore? Michel Erpelding, is a legal scholar in the history of international law, with an additional degree in Middle Eastern studies, and works on international law particularly related to colonialism and individual rights. We speak about the definitions of international lawyers and the International Criminal Court of war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and apartheid.   Israel was viewed by the UN, well before 7 October 2023, as an occupying power in Gaza, and as such remained bound by international law to meet the essential needs of the civilian population. Israel can control water going into Gaza. It can exert decisive control over Gaza via land, air and sea. We explore the notion of ‘double standards' in political discourse when it comes to annexation (for example, Putin annexing Crimea; Netanyahu annexing East Jerusalem, the Golan Heights and the West Bank). Naturally the 7 October attacks by Hamas was the catalyst to this most recent war, but there is also the legal notion of ‘proportionality' in war. Dr. Erpeling and Dalia discuss why the Oslo Accords of 1995 did not work. “Oslo led to a clearer apartheid reality in the West Bank and Jerusalem” says Dalia, and goes on to say how certain Palestinian segregation means one cannot drive on certain roads, cannot visit certain parts of Palestine without the ‘right' passport, requires a certain number plate, will be held up for hours at check-points to be humiliated, and so the layers of discrimination continue. This un-ending story of war sits in a region where, fundamentally, humanity has been abandoned. And this humanity at its core, will find not much difference between Israelis and Palestinians, just like the Irish and Northern Irish, just like the Ukrainians and Russians. When the Ukraine war started, how often did we hear the line, “But they are our brothers and sisters?”  Humanity is a source of life and support. Borders, walls, check-points, active discrimination and suppression are not the acts of humans who, with a religion or not, know what is right in their heart. Let's end with a recent poll in the French newspaper La Tribune Dimanche, which showed that when 986 people aged between 16 and 24 were questioned about the Holocaust, one in five had never heard of it (18%), and almost one in five had heard of it without knowing more (17%). Let's try to remember what has gone before.  Let's try to break the circles of hatred in history. Get in touch  Contact Lisa on LinkedIn or via her website.

We discuss Gaza, Resilience, Belief, Faith, the Nakbah, the Cruelty of the World, Hatred, Loss and the Current Situation in Gaza. Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, an esteemed Palestinian-Canadian physician and humanitarian, was born in the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza on August 15, 1958. He is renowned for his unwavering commitment to peace, education, and women's empowerment, particularly following the tragic loss of three daughters during Israel's Operation Cast Lead in January 2009. Abuelaish studied medicine at Cairo University before moving to Canada in 1987 to pursue further training as a gynecologist. In addition to being a respected medical professional, he has dedicated himself to promoting cross-border understanding between Palestinians and Israelis through various initiatives such as the Daughters for Life Foundation (DFLF), which provides scholarships to young female students from conflict zones around the world. His work with DFLF led him to be named one of Time Magazine's “100 Most Influential People” in 2010. The foundation also inspired his bestselling memoir, “I Shall Not Hate,” published in 2010, which chronicles his personal journey towards forgiveness after losing his family members. In recognition of his efforts, Abuelaish received numerous awards, including the Order of Ontario, the United Nations Prize in Field Support, and the Right Livelihood Award, often referred to as the Alternative Nobel Prize. His advocacy for peace and justice continues to inspire people worldwide, making him a prominent figure in global discussions about conflict resolution and reconciliation. Pourtant, Izzeldin écrit son livre, I shall not hate (Je ne haïrai point).

Around the world, armed war, conflict and violence have had a significant impact on the way healthcare is delivered. This can be seen in the Syrian Civil War, the Iraq War, and in humanitarian crises such as the Rohingya Refugee Crisis. On this week's episode of Beyond the Headlines, we discuss the intersection of health and conflict. We investigate the impact of conflict in terms of policy-making and its implementation, the strain and toll that is taken on the State, decision-making, the role of private and on-the ground non-profit actors, and the responsibility of large multinational organizations such as the World Health Organization. We dive into these issues through the unique perspectives of Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, Ahmad Firas Khalid, and Ruby Gill. This episode was produced by Senior Producer Erin Anderson-Birmingham, Junior Producer Geneviève Tallemeister, and Junior Producer Wahaj Alam, with support from Executive Director Alex Gold-Apel.

On Sunday, Benjamin Netanyahu lost the prime minister's post after opponents in the Knesset, Israel's parliament, approved a coalition government led, for now, by his one-time protege, Naftali Bennett. Netanyahu will now serve as leader of the opposition.  The new government is an unlikely group of politicians and parties from the left, right and center, united only by their opposition to Netanyahu. The vote to oust him may prove easier than the next part: What happens now? Today, we speak to L.A. Times global affairs correspondent Laura King about Netanyahu's legacy and his downfall, and whether the new government can bring any peace to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We'll also hear from Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, a Palestinian Canadian who lost family members to an Israeli attack, yet has emerged as a leading advocate for ... peace.More reading:Benjamin Netanyahu ruled Israel as a man of many faces He ‘won the lottery' of Israeli politics. I had the honor of meeting Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish in Toronto, Canada when he asked me to accept their 2019 Lifetime Achievement Luminary Award. Humbled to receive this award I was also encouraged by the amount of support Daughters for Life Foundation is garnering from educational institutions in Canada and the United States. Striving to advance, invest, and promote higher education for young women living in the Middle East, Dr. Abuelaish has taken the deep personal feelings of anguish and anger and created monumental beauty for the benefit of others. His harrowing and inspiring book, I Shall Not Hate; A Gaza Doctor’s Journey on The Road to Peace and Human Dignity, has been made into a play allowing another form of art to help transcend hate and teach peace. Germany, Austria, Israel, the United States and now Belgium are hosting the play in their respective languages including Hebrew and Arabic. “Don’t underestimate yourself”, said Izzeldin’s eldest daughter, Bessan. Bessan (age 21), Mayar (age 15), and Aya (age 13), lost their lives alongside their cousin, Noor (age 17) in January 2009, when an Israeli tank fired into the Abuelaish home.In today’s podcast, “Wringing Positivity From Anger to Leave a Legacy of Kindness” you will hear a theme that resonates in many of my interviewees. They are hurting and from their pain a path onward is created. It is their path onward, their resilience that will leave a legacy of kindness for generations to come. I am reminded of Susan Bro’s message in episode 24, “If You’re Not Outraged, You’re Not Paying Attention.”We will have a wonderful opportunity to hear more from Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish when he is in conversation with the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Senior Pastor, Adam Hamilton and The Temple, Congregation B’Nai Jehudah Senior Rabbi, Art Nemitoff. Knowing what it is like to have lost my father and son to murder, a hate crime, in fact, I often hear from others, “I can’t imagine.” My response may come across too practiced...because it is. “I hope you never have, too”, is what flows from my mouth in return.Jennifer Ross, President & CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg, Pennsylvania was prompted to place me on a stage with a five-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee and internationally recognized human rights activist, Izzeldin Abuelaish, MD in November 2019. She had read his book, “I Shall Not Hate; A Gaza Doctor’s Journey” outlining the three tragic murders of Besan (20), Maya (15), and Aya (14), three of Izzeldin’s daughters and his niece, Noor (17), by an Israeli tank in Gaza on January 16, 2009. Izzeldin is Palestinian. His book is heart wrenching and detailed as he takes us through his childhood to the trials of medical school, all while living life as a refugee. Yet, his inspiring heart warms us in every chapter of his life because Izzeldin takes the challenges presented and transforms them to life.I was honored that Jenn Ross saw me in a similar light and agreed to join their event. Upon meeting Izzeldin I almost said, “I can’t imagine”. Instead, I paused and said, “Thank you for all the good work you present in our world, from the heart break you face daily.”Izzeldin has a large personality and is generous with his words and his edict on actions. “Challenges are man made”, you will hear him speak of how often man creates conflict and therefore, many innocent suffer. “Wisdom, kindness and courage” will move you to take some action of your own. How can you not, after hearing from a man who lost so much and yet, has the grit, fortitude and sheer will to wring the good from bad.Documenting this show notes I am reminded of an earlier Real Grief - Real Healing Episode with Wesley Hamliton. Wesley shares how he struggled and yet found the good in his life and in others.Episode 26 is only part one of a two part series. We had much to discuss and still do. I was left wanting for more and you will be, as well. Thankfully, Izzeldin has agreed to be part of our SevenDays® Make a Ripple, Change the World experience, specifically on Thursday, April 22. You can register using this link.I completely understand how Izzeldin continues to operate after losing so much. His deceased children live with him every day in his heart. Offering us a human message to find forgiveness among one another and create a world filled with kindness, while praising the women who nurture and bring forth life...this man has much to offer each of us.Enjoy “Take the Challenge and Transform it to Life” and share how you are inspired after listening to Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish!•Find Mindy on Social Media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MindyCorporonLLCInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mindycorporon/Twitter: https://twitter.com/MindyCorporonLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mindycorporon/•This channel is made possible because of listeners just like you. Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, 2010 Nobel Peace Prize nominee and internationally recognized human rights and inspirational peace activist, in conversation with Jaipur Bytes host Lakshya Datta. Dr. Abuelaish talks to Lakshya about what hatred does to a person and to a community, where he gets his strength to deliver his message of hope and forgiveness, why political leaders need to humanize and not politicize, how health and peace are inter-connected, and why he started the Daughters For Life Foundation. Dr. Abuelaish is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Office of Global Public Health Education & Training at the University of Toronto. In January 2009, an Israeli tank shelled the home of Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish in the Gaza Strip and killed three of his daughters: Bessan, 21; Mayar, 15; and Aya, 13. This tragedy occured only minutes before Dr. Abuelaish was scheduled to speak live on Israeli television. His recorded cries for help captured hearts and headlines in Israel and around the world, and his response to the loss of his daughters was followed by international audiences. Dr. Abuelaish never sought to seek revenge or sink into despair and hatred. Instead, he called for those in the Middle East to stop the bloodshed and facilitate discourse for mutual understanding. His strongest hope is that his daughters will be the last sacrifice on the road to peace between Palestinians and Israelis. He started and chairs the Daughters For Life Foundation in their memory, based on the belief that lasting peace in the Middle East depends on the empowerment of girls and young women through education, which will allow them to become agents of change for the betterment of life throughout the Middle East. His 2010 book "I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor's Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity” has been translated in to 23 languages. Dr. Abuelaish will be speaking at JLF Toronto on September 28. Remarkably, Dr. Izzeldin resolved not to hate the Israelis but to try to do something positive so that the sacrifice of his daughters would not be in vain. Hate, he believes, is the strongest weapon of mass destruction. Since that time, he has dedicated his life to bringing peace to the Arab/Israeli conflict. Dr. Abuelaish now lives and works in Toronto.
