Ep. 55 - Scott Medlin found his calling as a police officer, a career he wanted since high school. After his deployment with the Marine Corps in 2003 and 2005 for Operation Iraqi Freedom, Scott fulfilled his dream and joined a police department in North Carolina. His most thrilling role was as K9 handler; he loved tracking and “the adrenaline rush of running in, not knowing what you're going to come up on.” But his commitment to the job was overtaking his life and taking its toll on his family. He decided to leave the streets to become a School Resource Officer (SRO), another role Scott came to love. While he missed being on patrol, he loved the kids and the impact he could have on their lives and theirs on his. Even that role was not helping reduce Scott's stress.Ultimately, after 15 years in law enforcement, Scott chose to leave the profession in 2020 when his PTSD, addiction and depression became too much. It was at this time he learned that more officers were dying by suicide than in the line of duty. That meant other officers were suffering, too.As Scott says, “I basically thought to myself, you mean all these mental health struggles I've had, I was not alone? Because I thought I was. I just said, I've got to step up. If I can talk about the struggles I went through, maybe it can help someone.”And that's exactly what he did. Scott embarked on a journey to inspire and encourage police officers to focus on their personal wellbeing in order to survive the career and better serve the public. He has become a national speaker, author of five books and content creator on social media platforms. He has presented at numerous first responder conferences and police academies. In this episode, you'll hear the stories of all Scott went through, the sacrifices he made for the job, the sacrifice he made to give up the job, and how he has used his own pain and personal growth to help others including LE, first responders and veterans. If you've seen Scott on social media or on his 10 Code Mindset channel on YouTube, you know how dynamic, relatable and inspiring he is. Here's where you can find Scott. Welcome to Episode 36 of the Guns and Yoga Podcast. Today I share a conversation I had with Scott Medlin, a US Marine veteran and law enforcement veteran. Scott discusses his difficult decision to leave full time law enforcement in 2020 to save his family. His overidentification with the job led him to work part time jobs when he didn't even need the cash. It was at that time, Scott began his journey to inspire and encourage police officers to focus on their personal wellbeing in order to better survive the career and better serve the public. Scott discusses his struggles with PTS, addiction, and depression and how an observation by his parents after returning from Iraq prompted him to get help. He discusses NLP therapy which he credits as a big part in his healing. Scott is also a podcast host, author, speaker, and trainer, so check out the link in the shownotes for more information. I spoke with Scott a while back, and I am glad to finally be able to share it. Full disclosure, between full time work obligations and family, and my coaching and retreat business, the podcast has had to take a back seat these past few months, which has been tough. I recently read something that really hit home – You can do anything, but you cant' do everything. Ok, Universe. I hear you. I have a passion which I realize is my purpose, or as the yogis call it – Dharma, and it's been the overarching theme in everything I do - to serve others by sharing the tools of holistic wellness - the avenues in which that happens are varied – my FT work as a wellness coordinator, a health coach, yoga instructor, podcast host, content creator, and speaker. I am working to streamline my side-hustles, but this podcast isn't going anywhere - because serving the first responders is where my heart lies. In fact, I am more convinced than ever that a framework of support, connection, resources, and education is imperative in this culture. This work can be tough at times, there are still many who don't buy in, but I see evidence practically every day whether it's people I know personally or through teaching, coaching, or podcasting that we are better together and that it's never too late. We have some great ideas brewing so stay tuned for more. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Scott. He has so much to offer. He writes and teaches about topics such as getting through the police Academy, a holistic approach to well-being, mental health, the warrior socialization of police officers, team work, and more. 2020 was a record year for suicides of police officers in America. There were 236 suicides and approximately 170 inline duty deaths. Officers know the risks of the job but suicide should NOT be one of them. Scott Medlin has worked as a Police Officer since 2007. Prior to that, he was in the United States Marine Corps. He was deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and 2005. After an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, he earned his Bachelor's degree and entered law enforcement. Both as a police officer and a Marine, Scott had to face huge struggles including PTSD, depression, anxiety, and addiction. In order to save his marriage, Scott had to resign from his job as a K9 officer which caused him deep resentment and despair - feeling like he lost his identity. Since the lockdown, there has been an upsurge of mental health challenges in general, but also among police officers. Scott faced these challenges and now teaches others how to become aware of them and overcome them. He has helped fellow officers keep marriages together, pull through during hard financial times, overcome depression, and provide encouragement when needed. In Scott's interview, he shares the struggles and the triumphs of our law enforcement officers but also how we can use the same principles for better mental health no matter what our occupation.
In this episode, we meet Officer Scott Medlin. Scott spent 6 years as a marine and 13 years in full-time law enforcement. He's now a part-time officer for a university. We learn how the desire to become a police officer was instilled in him at a very young age. We also learn how law enforcement nearly cost him his family. That, in part, put him on a path to author multiple books to help other officers deal with the stressors of the job. Scott is certainly a servant at heart. He tells about his funnier calls as well as some of his proudest moments as a police officer. This episode is a great listen for 1st responders, their families and the general public. Sit back! When Scott Medlin returned from his second deployment to Iraq he didn't realize he was suffering from PTSD, but knew something was wrong. He experienced confusion and anger and struggled with alcohol and didn't know how to get back to who he was before entering the marine corp. Though he never regretted his decision to serve his country he often felt he was on an emotional rollercoaster. As he began to work on himself he came to understand that humans are not machines and the brain is not built for the kind of stress that combat brings. His need to protect and give back led him to the police force where he has served since then but in January 2020 he learned the scope of mental health issues and the suicide rate among cops. In this episode Scott shares what he's learned about trauma and its effect on law enforcement, and how in writing his new book and lecturing he has become an advocate for mandatory mental health support for officers.
