“Not Even Doctor Phil Can Fix This.” The Psychological Mystery series starts with a traffic stop and escalates into a web of twisted secrets and deadly consequences. Serial killers are exposed, and the existence of a Secret Army is threatened. A investigative journalist conspires to reveal more secrets and an assortment of characters and events propel Farmerville towards tragedy. More mystery unfolds with a pig farm, Gitmo, pedophiles, nightmares, ghostly therapy sessions, cave kids, a furnace, another serial killer, a table with a history, and an axe or two. Intertwining plots twists run rampant making it clear that something sinister is at play. Farmerville may be for you If you like the writing of Harlan Coben, Caroline Kepnes, and Jesse Q. Sutanto.
'That megalomaniac upstart is rapidly degenerating into a latter-day Caligula!' Our review of Secret Army's gripping second series continues with John Brason's Russian Roulette: soon after hearing about the death of their leader Lisa, Lifeline have to contend with two Russian evaders, Brandt is asked to join a plot against Hitler, and Albert accepts Kessler's invite to a sinister garden party... While AJ realises just how much of the episode they had forgotten, Andy disagrees with himself from the past about both locations and musical instruments. The pair agree that the episode could also be called 'Natalie's Very Bad Day' and consider issues as diverse as: Alain's family and his share of the Muny farm; why everyone is suddenly and inexplicably calling Lisa, Yvette; the meaning of European hand gestures; and the decision not to subtitle the episode's plentiful Russian dialogue. There's also Ryan's reaction on first viewing, Alex Wilcock considering both the episode's title and Kessler's return invitation to Albert, and Joanna from Australia who first watched the series at ten-years-old. The book that AJ mentions is The Nine by Gwen Strauss about a band of daring resistance women who escaped from Nazi Germany. In this special episode of Down the Line, AJ Interviews none other than Jan Francis who played Lisa Colbert: codename Yvette, in Secret Army. As well as her memories of being cast in the show, Jan recalls its creator and producer Gerry Glaister, and the learning curve she and her fellow cast members went on as they found out about the historical reality behind the series. Having recently watched the series again on Talking Pictures, Jan also reflects on whether Secret Army still stands up today. She also reveals some surprisingly relevant stories of her own father's wartime exploits. We are incredibly grateful to Jan for giving up her time for this interview and for sharing so generously. If you would like to show your appreciation, then please consider donating to Jan's chosen charity: SSAFA (The Armed Forces Charity) at: https://www.ssafa.org.uk/ (and mention this Secret Army podcast when you donate so that contributions relating to this interview can be grouped together). With Kessler determined to capture the British agent, Curtis must find a way out of Brussels as a great encirclement of the city begins... AJ and Andy finally reach the end of the first series and tackle matters as diverse as the relationship between Lisa and Curtis, the replacement of Brandt by Reinecke, and what Lifeline is doing outside at the end of the episode! Along the way they find much to enjoy: the ideas that Lisa and Monique come up with; the typically Vik Ritelis direction; and the sheer bravado of Curtis's escape. However, they also find themselves grappling with a historical dating issue and why Curtis doesn't understand that he can't just come back to Brussels! At the end of the episode we hear from Sophie who found her way to Secret Army via Buffy, the Vampire Slayer! You can find Sophie on Instagram @stanleybiggsclothiers. Please do let us know your thoughts on this or any previous episode. We will shortly be recording episodes on Series 2's early episodes, so message us about those too! When Curtis falls under suspicion for the murder of Hugh Neville, the future of Lifeline is in doubt as Brandt and Kessler come dangerously close to uncovering their operations... Andy is thrilled to have arrived at what he consider to be a blueprint for the series Secret Army and even dispensed with his usual poker face when watching it with Ryan. AJ meanwhile couldn't help but notice the wintry feel or the amount of times characters came in and out of doors! There's also high praise for both Curtis and Albert they respond to questioning, as well as fond appreciation for the thoughtful scenes that the latter shares with Andree. Elsewhere, there's an opportunity to sing "Capable Women" rather than "Interchangeable Men" and a moment to appreciate Jacques Bol in this his final episode. Join AJ and Andy as they hurtle towards the finale of Series One! Please do get in touch with your thoughts on this and future episodes. Tweets and voice-notes are both most welcome. Purchase a 3D Map of the Land of Israel: https://cutt.ly/Wezz8k3d Everyone knows that Iran is in a race to acquire nuclear weapons, with a publicly stated goal of eradicating first Israel, then America. Many people also know that Hezbollah and the Houthis in Yemen are simply a proxy of the world's number one sponsor of terrorism. Although speculated by various sources, the truth about Iran's fourth proxy, a place where they have been building a new army for years, has never been exposed….until now. AJ and Andy interview Henrietta 'Hetty' Baynes who played Yvonne in three different episodes of Secret Army. Hetty recalls working on the Candide studio set, rehearsing in Acton and the joy of working with the series regulars. She also reflects on what motivated Yvonne and the character's possible journey after the war. Hetty also recounts highlights from her varied TV career including Bergerac, Running Scared and Jonathan Creek and how she met and fell in love with film director Ken Russell while making The Secret Life of Arnold Bax. Best known to audiences around the world as Lt Gruber from 'Allo 'Allo! Guy Siner joins Tyler this week to talk about the show, his career and his brand new podcast - Listen Very Carefully - in which he and friends & colleagues Kim Hartmann (Helga) and Richard Gibson (Herr Flick) look back fondly and drink gin. Before landing the role of Gruber Guy had appeared in Genesis of the Daleks up against Tom Baker and had a brief role in Secret Army - ironically the very programme which inspired 'Allo 'Allo! Post-'Allo 'Allo! his career has flourished and as well as films (such as Pirates of the Caribbean) and television (including Seinfeld) Guy is (possibly) the only person to have appeared in all four major sci-fi franchises: Dr Who; Star Trek; Babylon 5 and Star Wars (he did voice work on the game Star Wars: TIE Fighter) We talk briefly about the Goons and the Kenneth Connor connection but this episode is very much given over to focusing on Guy and 'Allo 'Allo! in particular - both shows share a silliness and sense of the absurd so there should be a big crossover of fans. Listen Very Carefully (Guy's new podcast): https://podqp.podbean.com/
AJ and Andy explore James Andrew Hall's second contribution to Secret Army: Bait, a clever tale centring around a woman, Catherine Bidout, living in Brussels who has not been interned despite being British. She is part of a trap prepared by Kessler, and Brandt is in danger of falling right into it. When Lifeline are also summoned to help, both the future of the evasion line and the Luftwaffe Major are at stake. As well as the pair's enjoyment of the inclusion of so many older female characters, AJ is a great fan of the final denouement which sees Brandt resolute while under pressure from Kessler, while Andy enjoys the Major's moral decision to save Bidout rather than pursue Lifeline. Elsewhere... there is deep love for the return of the wonderful Yvonne played by Henrietta Baynes; the character of Curtis continues to be a source of frustration; and the scene in which Albert requires Monique to work on the Nazi flag comes under the microscope. Also, Andy has clearly thought far too much about the route of Hitler's birthday parade, while AJ has actually just been to Brussels and shares their experiences of visiting the Candide today! We also hear from Ryan, Alex Wilcock and Andrew Orton. Andrew's video on Secret Army can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWqBfiwzy5A Thank you to them and everyone else who is joining us on this journey. After World War II, the CIA hatched a covert plan to stop Soviet expansion in Europe. They created a secret army, recruiting an unexpected mix of allies. This clandestine operation, known as Gladio, spanned across all NATO countries. What began as a defensive strategy quickly morphed into something far more sinister. Innocent civilians became casualties in a shadow war fought on European streets.
This month AJ & Andy appraise Michael Chapman's sole contribution to Secret Army: Hymn to Freedom, which explores the political and personal motivations of the Quisling-like Van Reijn as he attempts to leave Occupied Belgium behind. Andy has issues with Chapman's storytelling style, while AJ has cause to sing a refrain of 'Interchangeable Men'. Elsewhere, a draughts trope irritates Andy, AJ considers how differently they might react to Lisa if a man talked to them like Curtis does, and both of them are thrilled to learn about a filming location used in the episode. We are joined, as ever, by Ryan, and also by Alex Wilcock whose reading of the episode brings lots of new ideas to light. At the end of the episode we are joined by Sophia Bennett (@sophiabennett on Twitter) who reflects on how Secret Army has affected both her reading and her writing. When a lock keeper is killed and Jacques is injured, Natalie's fate looks uncertain as she is taken hostage by an impetuous evader whose identity is in doubt... AJ and Andy critique 'the one with the mud' and find a lot more to discuss and explore than this episode's memorable denouement. There is high praise for Juliet Hammond-Hill's performance as Natalie as the character takes centre-stage for the first time, and appreciation of the sequence in which Monique is attacked as a collaborator in the Candide, a troubling rehearsal of events later in the series. The episode's protagonist, young South African airmen Noel Uys, played by Christopher Douglas, also comes under the spotlight. In a special episode, in two week's time, you will be able to hear AJ's exclusive interview with Christopher to find out what he remembers about his time on Secret Army. As well as focusing on Viktors Ritelis's direction and Raymond London's design, the episode's distinctive soundscape is discussed. And thanks to one of our wonderful listeners we can also reveal the episode's principal windmill and mudflats locations, so you too can lose your shoes and roll around waist-deep in mud should the fancy take you. Thank you for your continued support of Down the Line and don't forget that we'd love to hear your thoughts on each episode either on Twitter (@secretarmypod) or email (secretarmypod@gmail.com), or as a voice-note, also by email (ee will be recording our episode about 'Bait' next if you want to contribute). Olive Yang—or Miss Hairy Legs, or Two-Gun Mulan, or any number of nicknames folks gave her—was the gunslinging princess of Kokang who bucked the royal yolk to become one of the Golden Triangle's biggest narco traffickers. With DC's backing she built an empire all over Asia, and did some pretty impressive spycraft on the side. Part one of this crazy two-parter tracks the rise of Olive and her “Boys,” the gangsters of the Kokang bush, a stint in prison, 999 dope and something Olive's sister called, euphemistically, the “special belt.” Learn more about your ad choices. BBC reporter Darragh MacIntyre discusses his new programme, “the Secret Army”
A new BBC investigation tells for the first time the extraordinary story of a lost American documentary made inside the Irish Republican Army in 1972, the bloodiest year of the Troubles. “The Secret Army” was made by an American film crew who captured IRA leaders and rank and file, planning, preparing, and carrying out bomb and gun attacks across Northern Ireland. The IRA hoped the unprecedented film would boost their support in America. But almost as soon as it was made the film disappeared. In today's mid-month bonus edition AJ interviews Bridget Bree who has lived in Belgium since 2017. Bridget is currently renting 28 Grand Place, the location used as the exterior of the Candide in the second and third series of Secret Army. Bridget and the '316 community' (https://www.316.be) are renting the building as a space for an art exhibition until the summer. Bridget is a fan of the series so is very keen for people to take this rare opportunity (it has been closed for some time) to visit the Candide and have a look around inside. Inspirational author Amanda Barrett's latest book, The Warsaw Sisters shines a light on an oft-forgotten corner of World War II Poland, and the true stories of ordinary individuals who fought to preserve freedom and humanity in the darkest of times. Hi, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler, and today on Binge Reading, Amanda talks about how she excavates the forgotten fragments of history in her books and why she loves the enduring power of story. The Warsaw Sisters tells of two women fighting against the darkness engulfing their homeland, one by entering a daring network of women sheltering Jewish children, and the other by joining the ranks of Poland's Secret Army, the Polish version of the Resistance. There is trouble in Paris and Lisa is about to get in very deep water in nearby Senlis. But when her uncle Gaston finds himself interrogated by Kessler himself it is set to be a dark day for Lifeline. As they review Too Near Home, AJ and Andy discuss its writer, master of suspense and spy storytelling - Robert Barr, the reliably distinctive direction of Viktors Ritelis and, thanks to the appearance of Souad Faress as Maria, the hidden history of the people of colour who played key roles as airmen and resistance workers during the war. They also find themselves critiquing plot contrivances at the Pontoise Prison and Lifeline communication failures, and due to Jeffrey Holland's presence even singing the theme to 'Oh Dr Beeching'! This time AJ and Andy review Growing Up - the very first episode of Secret Army to go before the cameras back in April 1977. It tells the story of a young Belgian boy - Jean-Paul Dornes played by Max Harris - who discovers and assists a downed airman - Sgt Clfford Howson played by Norman Eshley - with tragic consequences. Once again the Lifeline regulars (in AJ's head 'The Baker Street Irregulars') are somewhat sidelined as the episode takes a 'Play for Today'-style focus centred around the Dornes family and their small mining town existence which, despite Anna Dornes' naive convictions, cannot escape the war. They find much to enjoy in the episode: particularly the performances of Max Harris and Brian Glover, and its careful treatment of grief and bereavement. If anyone listening is currently dealing with bereavement you might choose to skip AJ's recollections of dark times in their life which the episode prompted them to revisit. Andy is surprised to find Vivien Merchant and Stanley Lebor among the supporting cast, playing the wonderfully named Mademoiselle Gunet (the teacher) and Pierre Bazin (the shopkeeper) respectively. Elsewhere, it falls to Ryan to call out Kessler for his unfair treatment of Brandt, Andy reveals a more significant role for Natalie in the original script, and AJ demands that the production team 'give that woman a hair bobble'! As the episode draws to a close we hear from Simon Jones who selects a possibly surprising favourite regular character. Next Time: Lost Sheep
Today the Down the Line team review the episode that Andy always describes as the start of Secret Army proper: Second Chance. Although it introduces yet more new characters: Hans and Lena, the story has our Lifeline regulars more centre stage and we finally hear Monique sing. It's a tightly plotted piece with a weighty moral dilemma at its absorbing and memorable conclusion. Elsewhere AJ is disappointed by Rear Gunner Eric Finch's northern-ness and both they and Andy are infuriated by Curtis's sexism. They also have to cause question once again who exactly is the series lead? Is it Lisa, who like her historical counterpart ran the line, or is it Albert? Also, AJ is critical of sling technique and, unlike Hans, very pleased not to have taken their name from a gravestone, while Andy wonders why neither of them received invites to the Manon Wedding Party. Both are surprised to discover that Monique has a flat, although they note that it is nothing like as fancy as Natalie's apartment later in the series. What has Natalie been up to? At the end of the episode we hear from musician Kate Garner @KateGarnerMusic (the daughter of Chas from Chas & Dave - yes really!) who consider the first series to be her sweet spot. Next Time: Growing Up
We've reached episode 4 of the first series and Arden Winch's Child's Play. While AJ has beef with Mr Winch, Andy struggles to believe this is directed by Viktors Ritelis. Although both agree that this is not the best episode of Secret Army, due to the sheer amount of exposition and the fact that it takes place down the line away from most of the Lifeline regulars, they still find things to enjoy here: the Chantal sisters for instance and the climactic scenes towards the end of the episode. Elswehere, Ryan finds the episode to be much better than he imagined and regular contributor Alex Wilcock makes some excellent observations. Some of the real life heroes of the Comete Line are examined as we delve into the events that inspired this and other episodes including the fearless Tante Go and basque guide Fiorentino. This week AJ and Andy tackle the third episode of Secret Army's first series: Radishes with Butter, written by John Brason and directed by Paul Annett. It chiefly deals with the Final Solution: the deportation of Jews from Brussels to death camps, via the story of one family - the Schliemanns - who Curtis wants Lifeline to help even though Lisa insists that they cannot get involved. At Gestapo HQ Brandt and Kessler lock horns over Nazi coffee and some bourbon biscuits, while courtesy of Gaston and his friends we discover that bankers can be the good guys sometimes! Elsewhere Andy has memories of the late Michael Burrell who played Schliemann and Jan Francis who has never forgotten that rooftop kiss! First-time watcher Ryan wants to know whether he is meant to like Curtis, while Alex Willcock just outright calls him a dick. Andy and AJ are similarly unimpressed. The episode ends with memories from Maria Leel who recalls tuning in to Secret Army from the start the first time around and then binge-watching it again when the series was first released on DVD. All this and a description of Front Axial Projection! If you would like to get involved in the podcast, get in touch at @secretarmypod on Twitter or secretarmypod@gmail.com. Next Time... Episode 4: Child's Play
This week AJ and Andy explore the filmic second episode of Secret Army: Sergeant on the Run. This leads them to consider the unique directorial style of Latvian-born Viktors Ritelis with his penchant for metaphor and stark European realism. They also discuss how this episode might have placed better later in the run due to its focus on a guest character - Sergeant Walker played by Martin Burrows - as opposed to the series regulars, some of whom we are still being introduced to, such as cycle shop owner Jacques Bol. AJ prompts Andy to considers why gay men might be drawn to the series female characters and also wonders if the relationship between Albert and Monique might have only been a 'night-time encounter' had it not been for the war. Andy also reads from, series advisor, Bill Randle's account of his wartime evasion adventures in Brussels which directly inspired some of Sergeant Walker's scenes in this episode. The episode ends with nostalgic reflections from Secret Army fan Joanne Lee who remembers watching the series while at school in Brussels. This week your hosts, AJ and Andy, talk a little more about the inception of the series, specifically the contribution of creator (uncredited) and producer Gerard (Gerry) Glaister) and script editor and writer John Brason, as well as reviewing the first episode: Lisa - Code Name Yvette, written by Willis Hall and directed by Kenneth Ives. Hall had the unenviable task of writing an opening instalment that had to introduce a huge number of characters as well as setting the scene for the style and approach of the series. Was he successful? Or was it an impossible task? We also hear from Ryan as he watches Secret Army for the very first time. Don't miss AJ's interview with Secret Army's principal designer Austin Ruddy, also published today. If you would like to get involved in the podcast, get in touch at @secretarmypod on Twitter or secretarmypod@gmail.com. Next Time... Episode 2: Sergeant on the Run
In this special bonus interview AJ speaks with Secret Army's principal designer Austin Ruddy who created all the key sets for the series including all the Candide interiors, the German offices at the Avenue Louise, and the Colbert family home. Ruddy describes how he became a TV production designer and his memories of working on Secret Army. Following their Secret Army episode last season, here Andy & Martin tackle its spin-off Kessler. The pair agree that its a very different show to its parent, which doesn't always hit the mark, but nevertheless boasts some fine acting, especially Clifford Rose in the title role, and wonderfully intricate scripts from John Brason and Gerry Glaister. 6 episodes of absorbing drama take us from Germany to England to Paraguay in this continent spanning epic that was clearly inspired in part by The Odessa File and The Boys From Brazil. Directed by Michael E. Briant and Tristan De Vere Cole, Kessler offers a memorable final chapter to the Secret Army story. The cast also includes Alan Dobie as Bauer, Nitza Saul as Mical Rak, Alison Glennie as Ingrid, Oscar Quitak as Josef Mengele, Nicholas Young as Franz Höss, Ralph Michael as Colonel Ruckert, Guy Rolfe as Yqueras and, of course, some cameos from Bernard Hepton, Angela Richards and Juliet Hammond-Hill. Star Trek: Voyager, Series 4, Episodes 18–19. First broadcast on Wednesday, 4 March 1998. It's business as usual on Star Trek this week, as the crew of Voyager find themselves in an episode of Secret Army which has been cast, written and directed by latex-headed aliens in Nazi uniforms. Will Voyager's extensive back catalogue of holodeck programs persuade the Hirogen that there's more to life than festooning your bulkheads with human skulls? Or will the Captain be forced (reluctantly) to kill Seven of Nine first?
