Here's the first thing I want to say about the uncertainty of our future in the face of COVID19: The future has ALWAYS been uncertain. I am recording this in April for a drop date in mid-May, which gives time for a lot to have changed in between. So if you're back at work and everything is as it was before the quarantine, great. However, I highly doubt it. Most likely your life is much the same as it was in late March and April. Meaning: the future is uncertain. When will you get to go back to work? Will your employer be there to go back to? When will schools, and restaurants, and the hair salon reopen? So here's the perspective I want to offer: When you were planning your 2020 back in late December or early January, how many of you put this quarantine in your planner? Scheduled it in Outlook? No one. So, then, your future, as of late December or early January, was uncertain. Because your future is always uncertain. Nothing's gone wrong to cause this pandemic. The pandemic was always going to happen. How do we know that? Because it's happening. You can argue with reality, but you'll lose 100% of the time. My mother was always going to die when I was 23 years old. I was always going to marry more than one man I wasn't compatible with. I was always going to need my gall bladder removed in 2005. Nothing went wrong in each of those instances. Nothing has gone wrong in 2020. So when you think about your future, whether that's three months from now or three years from now, it's uncertain. The question, then, is now what? There's a circumstance in the world called COVID19. Or, as I like to call it, Virus Jail. Now what? What do you want to think about this time of quarantine? This time of being out of a job? Or perhaps this time of working harder than you've ever worked? What do you want to think about your chances of getting a new job? About your financial future? About the world? What do you want to make all this mean? Here are my best strategies for navigating an uncertain future (which, remember, is always). Name the emotion. One of the most useful tools to bring your anxiety level down is to name the feeling you're having. Sad, scared, worried, afraid, terrified…what is the emotion you're experiencing right now? Describe how the emotion feels in your body. Calling the emotion out will really bring the anxiety about that emotion down. By bringing it out into the light, it is less scary and more manageable. Is it a fluttering in your stomach? Is your pulse racing? Do you feel pressure behind your eyes? When you think of your feelings this way, they seem much less scary and harmful. Identify the thought causing that emotion. Every emotion you experience has a corresponding thought. If I'm feeling scared, perhaps it's because I'm thinking “I don't want to catch the virus.” If I'm feeling afraid, perhaps it's because I'm thinking “I don't know how I'm going to pay my bills.” If I'm feeling sad, perhaps it's because I'm thinking “Aunt Jenny just tested positive for the virus.” Notice it's not COVID19 causing your feeling. It's your thought about COVID19. About your employment status. About Aunt Jenny. Decide if you want to keep thinking that thought. Some thoughts whisk through our brain and we quickly discard them. “Where did that come from?” we ask ourselves. Other thoughts are ones that we keep thinking over and over, and they become part of our belief system. The thought creates a new neural pathway in our brain, so that the brain can become more efficient in thinking that thought by relegating it to our subconscious. This is great if those habitual thoughts serve us; not so great if those habitual thoughts are destructive. Some destructive thoughts right now that I'm hearing from a lot of clients are: “There are no jobs available.” “No one is hiring.” “It will be very difficult to get a job right now.” Give equal airtime to the best possible future. Because the future is always uncertain, why not entertain the possibility of the best possible future for yourself? Instead of thinking you're going to be out of work for months and living in a cardboard box, how about thinking you're going to get a fabulous new job that pays more than you were making? My coach says we're all delusional, so we might as well be delusional in our own favor. Set a 90-day goal. Put your brain and this downtime to good use by picking a project you can achieve in 90 days, then GET BUSY. My project has to do with physical pictures I'm scanning and putting into digital photo albums. Do you want to lose some weight? Get on a regular exercise routine? Clean out your garage? You'll feel good in achieving this thing, and it will take your mind off the less healthy thoughts you're having. Get help. Life coaches have never been busier than they are right now, because people need help managing their thoughts around the virus. As I've mentioned numerous times, I'm in Self-Coaching Scholars with Brooke Castillo, and many of the clients she coaches have issues around COVID19. I HIGHLY encourage you to look into Self-Coaching Scholars; it's absolutely the best $297 I spend every month. If you can't afford that right now, check out her FREE podcast, The Life Coach School. Another new podcast I really like is Brene Brown's Unlocking Us. And, of course, there's this podcast. Keep in mind that friends and family will give you their opinion. A life coach will hold space for you to see your thoughts and your feelings and process them in a safe environment. No judgment or opinions. It's okay to be afraid. Here's the caveat: Don't let the fear hold you back. Don't let the fear keep you from planning your future and getting shit done. Fear is just your primitive brain, trying to protect you from certain death. Thank it for its concern, then override it with your prefrontal cortex by planning and making decisions ahead of time. I like the visual of fear being a back-seat passenger in your car. It can state its opinion about where you should go and how you should drive, but it can't take the wheel from you. Unless you hand the wheel over to your primitive brain, all it can do is state its opinion. Don't expect it to be easy. One you set some goals — whether for getting a new job or accomplishing a project with old pictures — your primitive brain will FREAK OUT. Guaranteed. Your primitive brain will see this goal as dangerous, and its job is to keep you safe. Your job, then, is to plan for NOT wanting to do the thing you planned to do when it's time to do it. You set aside an hour to call people in your network. I guarantee you'll think of ten things you MUST do during that time. What will your strategy be for doing the thing anyway? One of the tools I like to use is to think of how proud my future self will be when I've accomplished that thing. In the case of my picture project, I picture how emotional my kids will be when I give them their childhood pictures. How much it will mean to them. Recognize – and reward – your progress. Many people wait until the job is done to reward themselves. Until they get the job to give themselves a treat. The completion of the task IS the reward. The new job IS the reward. What can you do every day to reward yourself for getting that day's tasks done? Want help writing a superior resume for your job search? I don't know about you, but I've heard about goals till I'm blue in the face. And the focus is often on SETTING goals, rather than how to actually ACHIEVE them. I've heard it said that a goal without a plan is just a wish. How true that is. I want to approach this topic from a different angle. Rather than talking about setting goals, let's talk about what you need to be DOING in 2020 so that, when you look back on the year, you will consider it a resounding success. We'll also talk about the THINKING aspect of planning for a successful 2020, because what you are thinking will have a direct impact on what you are doing. Or, put another way, if you're not DOING what you want to be doing in 2020, it's because you're not THINKING thoughts that will support what you want to be DOING. I'm going to recommend some exercises for you to complete. You can certainly think about your answers to these questions, but there's something very powerful about writing your answers down and seeing them on paper. Here's the link to a worksheet that will help you through this process: http://bit.ly/Episode109 SETTING THE STAGE Let's start by setting the stage here. If you're going to set yourself up for success in 2020, the first step HAS to be defining success for yourself. Not what anyone else thinks success looks like…what does it look like for YOU? Here are the suggested areas of your life to look at, these come from the BAGUA map. If you're not familiar with the BAGUA map, you can Google it and see examples; it's based on the principles of Feng Shui. -Wealth (prosperity) -Fame (reputation) -Relationships (love and/or friendships) -Family (community) -Health -Creativity (joy and inspiration) -Wisdom (self-improvement) -Career (purpose) -Helpful People (travel, benevolence, synchronicity) I don't recommend that you try to do all nine areas; I'd rather see you pick 2-3 that really speak to you and determine what success would look like in that area. Some examples are in order: If you choose Wealth, you might decide that success would look like a certain income level. You might also choose to do something with your money that will generate wealth, such as investing or doing things that will allow you to keep more of the money you earn. My success marker for Wealth in 2020 is a certain income level. For Fame, you might decide to start a blog…write a book…join a committee or activity at work that will get you exposed to more people on a broader scope. You might decide to speak on a certain stage or get a certain level of recognition for your job performance. My success marker for Fame in 2020 is to have 10,000 downloads per episode of this podcast. For Relationship, you might want to meet the love of your life…improve your marriage…ask your significant other to marry you. My success marker for Relationship in 2020 is to meet Andy. For Family, you might want to have a baby…mend or strengthen a relationship with a family member…or create a community for yourself with friends. This one also incorporates “community,” so it isn't limited to blood relationship. For Health, you might want to address a certain health issue that's been plaguing you, reach a certain weight, start a certain type of exercise like yoga. My success marker for Health in 2020 is to get the help I need for my back and neck issues, while also reaching my goal weight. For Creativity, you could either start or expand on an activity that brings you joy and inspiration. I have a friend who got a bunch of art supplies for Christmas because she wants to return to her love of painting and making stained glass. It doesn't have to be artistic…whatever brings you joy. For Wisdom, what is one self-improvement activity you can engage in? Do you want to finish your bachelor's degree or start a master's degree? I there a certification or credential you'd like to pursue? My success marker for Wisdom in 2020 is Self-Coaching Scholars; I've re-joined and will be fully engaged in the monthly coaching activities. For Career, is there a shift that needs to take place, either in terms of the company you work for or the job you are doing? Do you want to go after a promotion? Do you want to seek the help of a career coach like me to make some important career decisions? For Helpful People, is there someone you need to meet? Is there a place you want to travel to? Is there a collaboration you want to cultivate? Is there a colleague at work who you would like to get to know better? My success marker for this category in 2020 is actually a nod to some significant travel I plan to take in 2021. THINKING Next is the thinking piece. For each success marker you pick, determine a thought you can practice thinking to set you up for success. You are not currently a person who believes that thought, or you would already have the thing you desire. That's okay. Your brain has become very efficient at thinking something different, and your job is to retrain your brain to think the new thing. If you currently believed you were capable of a certain income, you would already be making that amount of money. If you believed you could be at a certain weight, you would already be there. If you believed you could get that promotion, you would have already sought it out. Here are some sample thoughts you might choose to practice thinking: For Wealth: “I am a person who earns _____(fill in the blank with a specific amount). For Fame: “I am a successful blogger.” For Relationship: “Andy and I will find each other in 2020.” For Career: “I will get a new job as a ____(job title if possible) by _____(date.) Important in this step is to be aware of what you're currently thinking so you can gently correct yourself as you are practicing believing your new thought. When you catch yourself thinking “I'll never make more than $50K,” gently correct your brain, with something like “I will earn $75K by the end of 2020.” When you catch your brain telling you that you have no business trying to blog, you gently correct that thought with something like “I am capable of learning how to become a successful blogger.” DOING Now that you've selected 2-3 areas from above, and determined your success marker for each area, it's time to MAKE IT HAPPEN. Remember, without a plan it's just a wish. For each area, write out the following, or use the worksheet I've created for you. Category: Success marker: What I need to START doing to achieve success in this area: What I need to STOP doing to achieve success in this area: Here's an example: Category: Career Success marker: Get a new job with a different company What I need to START doing: Set aside 4 hours per week for job search activities What I need to STOP doing: Complaining about my current job, because that energy doesn't serve me in looking for a new job. The next step in the DOING process is calendaring the things. In the example above, you would want to find 4 hours each week that you can set aside to conduct your job search. The next step would be to determine HOW you will spend those 4 hours. If all you know how to do is look at job boards, reach out to me and I can help you with this. Also, I've covered this topic on multiple episodes of the podcast, so you might want to re-listen to those. Okay…I hope I've given you a different way of looking at goal setting and goal achievement. A final word: if this isn't something you've done before, start with smaller, attainable success markers. This allows you to be successful, and it also helps you build your relationship with yourself. You get in the habit of having your own back on getting the things you want in life. You may have heard me talk about the MODEL on episodes 48 and 54 when I talked about certainty and thought management, but truly you need to hear it again. These are concepts you can’t hear enough to really understand them. this is because most of us were not taught how to manage our minds. Even fewer of us were taught exercises to really understand our minds, not just how to conceptualize how the mind works. This exercise of using the self coaching model is something I have been working with for two and a half years now in Self Coaching Scholars with Brooke Castillo. It’s been instrumental in me reclaiming my health and my sanity as a step parent. I know this can handle any situation and I want to teach it to you. I truly believe if you work with it and actually write down the models that you run, it can be the #1 tool to help you keep your cool while you are patiently waiting to conceive!
Ep #21 - In this weeks show we discuss problems and how realizing they are a non-stop occurrence in our lives actually frees us up from the stress they induce because we expect them, instead of fear them. Problems are opportunities to learn and grow. Running from the negative thoughts and feelings blocks your ability to experience the event and thus not learn what you need to in order to mature and evolve. Realize that problems are forever. You will never eliminate all the problems in your life. It is impossible. Get a good grade and your friend gets a bad grade - how will you handle your contrary emotions? Get a raise and now you pay higher taxes. Get a new car and now you have greater expenses. Win the game and now you have pressure to win the next game. Get good grades and now you pressure yourself to get better. No matter the situation you experience it will bring with it a whole new set of "problem" that are really just life situations you now get to experience so you can continue to grow. Ask yourself these questions when a problem arises or you feel overwhelmed by college and life. 1. What is a problem you want to eliminate forever? Why? 2. If you were able to eliminate this problem, what new problem would take its place that you don't have now? 3. What do you think about the concept that problems and negative emotions are forever? 4. As a human being that has both positive and negative emotions, what do you think about the idea that the good balance is half and half without any buffering or false pleasures? 5. I believe that most of our dreams are on the other side of discomfort. What is your relationship with discomfort? 6. When we see problems as an unwanted or wrong part of life, we end up not growing. Why do you think this is? 7. If you looked forward to negative emotion and planned on problems, how would your life be different? 8. Can you think of a problem you have had that ultimately created an equal amount of positive contrast? Write it here. 9. Here's an idea...The bigger your dreams, the more problems you will have. The more problems you have, the more opportunity you have for the balance of positive emotion. Thoughts? The above questions come from Brooke Castillo's Self-Coaching Scholars program I am in. Breaking habits, and changing your life is no joke! The moment you start breaking habituated patterns your primitive brain puts on the emergency brake, and starts looking for the (non-existent) heard of wild, ravenous tigers trying to eat you. Over-drama much? Well, beautiful Explorers, that is simply how your brain is wired. Any disturbance in the Force is viewed as an immediate threat to the status quo. Hiring a life coach can help you see through that primitive survival mechanism that, if unchallenged, can keep you fearful, afraid, and oh, so small and silent. I am certainly no different. I'm getting healthy, and must overcome a lifetime of mind programming that kept me obese, led to the formation of dis-ease in my body, and could ultimately lead to decline and decay of my health in catastrophic ways. I'm a life coach who believes passionately in the power of having a great coach in your corner, and when I came to a challenge I had not mastered, I turned to Self Coaching Scholars.
In this broadcast, Donna Reish, author of over 100 curriculum books for students, Intermittent Fasting teacher, blogger, and online teacher, teaches how our thoughts affect our results by looking at her husband’s Pollyanna way of thinking. She delves into how working with weight loss and life coach Brooke Castillo in Self-Coaching Scholars has led Donna to see how her husband’s way of thinking has been right all along! (Gasp!) When we think differently about people, situations, our goals, life’s disappointments, and more, we act differently. When we think good thoughts, we act in a way that brings good results. When we think bad thoughts, we act in a way that brings bad results. Donna applies this to work, marriage, weight loss, and exercise with examples of both---thoughts that lead us to negative results in these areas and thoughts that lead us to positive results in these areas. She then talks about the need to be extremely specific in our thoughts—take a circumstance or person and think an intentional thought—and then our actions will follow these specific thoughts.

If you’re new to the podcast, each month I publish an income report to take you behind the scenes of my online business and reveal exactly how much money I make, how much I spend and lessons learned along the way! IMPORTANT THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN NOVEMBER. I interviewed two million-dollar business owners on Pep Talks for Side Hustlers – Episodes 195 & 196 with Kelly Roach and 198 & 199 with Bernadette Doyle. Bernadette Doyle challenged me to start tracking my time and start working 25 hours a week NOW. I ran a final promotion for my membership program, Serious Side Hustlers. I closed my membership program, Serious Side Hustlers. I turned 39, and my husband turned 40. I joined Brooke Castillo’s Self Coaching Scholars. I decided to move to 1 episode of Pep Talks for Side Hustlers per week. I completed the second month of my Web Designer Academy. I made an executive decision to not schedule anything in the evenings. Notes I found to myself in my planner: REVIEW OF MY GOALS When in quit my day job in January of 2018, I set a goal to generate $10,000 in revenue so that I could pay myself $5,000 a month and set aside the other $5000 for taxes and expenses: $5000 – Income to cover my old paycheck. $2500 – Expenses $2500 – Taxes WHAT I FOCUSED ON IN NOVEMBER November is typically just one big celebration in my life. We have tons of friends and family with November birthdays (including me and my husband), and of course Thanksgiving is in November, which is my favorite holiday. Probably because every so often my birthday falls on Thanksgiving which makes it extra special. It starts getting cold here in Ohio in November – which I absolutely love. Just ask my good friend Tyler – he’ll tell you that outerwear is my favorite type of clothing. Give me all the sweaters and jackets and gloves and hats and scarves – and I’m a happy girl! And of course right after Thanksgiving it’s time to decorate for Christmas and start getting into the holiday spirit. So when I was planning out my 2018 around this time last year, I blocked off the week of Thanksgiving for vacation, and the following Thursday – Monday to take a trip to celebrate my husband’s 40th birthday, which has become a tradition with our group of friends that we all take a trip together for our 40th. That’s going to be me in 2019, so if you have any ideas of where I should go in mid-November, head on over to peptalksforsidehustlers.com/203 and leave an idea for me in the comments! So if you listened to my October income report back in episode 201, you’ll recall that my main focus in October was to SLOW DOWN so that I could start taking time out for myself. I started taking a yoga class, I delegated more to my VA and intern and moved from 7 podcasts a week down to three and went from working about 60 hours a week down to 40. Entering November, I started to feel like I was finally, FINALLY creating the freedom that I had so desperately craved when I put this whole crazy plan in motion to start a side hustle and grow it to the point where it could sustain itself and replace my day job income. And then I had a couple of conversations that were transformational. I had the pleasure of talking to two entrepreneurs who have both reached the million dollar mark in their business – Kelly Roach and Bernadette Doyle. And I don’t think it is any coincidence at all that both of them shared the same piece of advice for making more money in your business – which is: Get really clear on what is income-producing in your business and what isn’t. Spend the majority of your work time on income-producing activities. Make sure your team is spending the majority of their time on income-producing activities so that they are generating more revenue for the business than what you’re paying them. Stop doing the things that don’t produce income, especially those things Bernadette called “creative avoidance” like working on your website instead of pitching clients. So I set up the time-tracking app called Toggl that Bernadette recommended, and started tracking all of my time in November. Two more really exciting things that I did in November: One, I enrolled in Brooke Castillo’s Self-Coaching Scholars membership program. I did it on my birthday as a gift to myself – for a few reasons: I’ve been listening to her podcast for the past several weeks and it’s totally helped me change how I think and stop buffering with overeating, overworking and overdrinking. Amy Porterfield recently credited Brooke for the mindset shift she needed to lose 58lbs, and if Amy Porterfield says something’s good, well, you know it’s good. I really, really wanted access to her Stop Overeating masterclass which is a part of the program. There’s an Entrepreneur track in there, which I also really wanted access to. I also applied for and was accepted to Bryan Harris’s Partnership Accelerator beta test group, which is a mentorship to teach you how to land partnerships, podcast spots and guest posts. It starts in January and it supports my goal to explode my email list in 2019. And I added another yoga class to my schedule. This yoga class is at 9am! Like, every day I’m driving there I’m like, I can’t believe I just get to take a yoga class at 9am instead of sitting in rush hour traffic. So that’s what I really focused on in November. Slowing down. Gratitude. And really paying attention to what I’m learning about what it takes to get to the next level. TOTAL REVENUE: $9690.52 Affiliate Income: $2040.80 Courses: $3267.72 Done For You & Consulting: $4382.00 TOTAL EXPENSES: $3399.70 Get the full breakdown of income, expenses and net profit month by month here. NET PROFIT: $6290.82 BIGGEST LESSONS LEARNED So here’s the thing – I’ve had a really hard time all year keeping my expenses down to $2500 a month like I planned. I’m going to make even more adjustments in December for 2019, but when I create my budget I’m just going to be more realistic about my expense budget. I want to get a cushion of at least five grand in the bank, because right now my business is pretty much paycheck to paycheck, like, I’m cleaning out my business bank account every month when it’s time to pay myself, pay off my credit card for last month’s expenses and put money aside for taxes.. I use the Profit First model from the book of the same name by Mike Michalowicz, so I pay myself first. Then taxes. Then expenses. And I also don’t do debt. I put all of my business expenses on my Chase Southwest Rewards credit card so I get all those airline miles, and then I pay it off on the last day off every month. I pay myself on the 15th and the 30th, and I move money to my tax account to pay my quarterlies. So there are about $500 in expenses I could cut every month but… It will require me to totally rebuilding my website and automation platforms, which is a significant time investment for me. I realize that I could save $6K a year by making the move – and there’s my cushion… But I also know that the work would take me at LEAST 4 solid weeks, and I think it would disrupt some of my funnels and result in a lot of customer service requests… Or I could pay my team to do it for me and coach them through it, and create content and tutorials around the experience, and train them on handling those customer service requests. Which would be what like, a real business owner/leader would do instead of doing it all herself… So I’m still him-hawing around about whether or not to make those structural changes… and I know these are the mindset shifts I need to make to grow my revenue. I learned a few really big lessons in November. First, I noticed that it only took 11 months of being on my own for me to freaking chill out and start enjoying myself… But seriously, what I’ve noticed is that it really does take awhile for my mind to get used to change. I can make a decision, but then it takes some time for the action to follow the decision. And then it takes some time to recognize the results and acknowledge them as a result of my action. I know how to pay attention to my thoughts now, and I do think that the changes I want to create will happen faster than in the past. And I’m spending much, much less time working. I’m down to about 25-30 hours. I’ll give you a breakdown on all of that in a future episode. Second, I’m spending 95% of my time on non-income producing activities. Which is why I shouldn’t be the one moving rebuilding my own platforms… I spend a lot of time “working”. And I suspect it’s just another way to avoid uncomfortable emotions, just like overeating and overdrinking. Looking at how I’m spending my time, it’s mind-boggling to me how I’ve managed to produce nearly $10,000 a month in revenue consistently this year. And it’s really exciting. What would be possible for me if I even shifted it to 20%, or even 50%? That’s my plan for 2019. Finally, I learned the most important lesson, I think anyway, in November was while I was decorating my Christmas tree. My husband had gotten our tree out of the basement and set it up in our loft, and we were all excited to listen to Christmas music and decorate it like we normally do together. It’s a prelit tree, and when we turned it on half the lights were burnt out. This happened last year and I had found this tool, this gun thing, online that you can use to test the strands and then you do something to the one that’s burnt out that fixes it. Clearly I have no idea how this thing works. So Floyd was like, on a mission to fix this tree and he spent two evenings obsessed with finding the burnt bulbs before he just got frustrated and gave up. So I’m like, I’m going to do something really nice for him and decorate the tree while he’s at work so he can come home and it’ll just be done, right? So because I was by myself, I decided to start listening to all the Entrepreneur modules inside of Brooke Castillo’s Self-Coaching Scholars, and I’m super excited because like at the end of all of them there’s one called How to Make a Million Dollars – which is a future goal that I have for my business. So as I’m listening, I’m hearing things like: Choose a niche. Give value ahead of time. Grow an email list. Make offers to it. If something doesn’t work the first time, try again. And I thought to myself, wow, I could totally sit here and think, “Thanks for nothing Brooke, tell me something I don’t know. This course was a waste of my time and money.” Which is honestly, is something I may have thought in the past. But instead, I found myself feeling really excited, like “Wow, I have all of the pieces in place. I’m on the right track. I have everything I need. It’s as good as done.” And in the million dollar module, she talked about how you just separate the math from the drama, list out all the reasons why it’s impossible and that becomes your to-do list to make it happen. Which is totally exciting, because then I think things like, “I know there are so many web designers out there that just want to build websites for a living and DON’T want to be freelancers or run their own businesses – what if I could create an amazing company that would give them that opportunity? And I think of how much more I could contribute and how much more value I can give when I’m at a higher level. Again, which brings me back to why I should not be moving my own platforms and why I should empower other people to do it and lead them through the process… Like, start practicing for that leadership role now… So that really goes for you too whether you want to make $100 or a thousand dollars or a million dollars. It’s just math. All the reasons it feels impossible become your to-do list. So I was super excited because not only did I realize that I have everything I need to get to the next level right in front of me, I also finished decorating that dang tree!!! #multitasking So if there’s anything I want you to take away from this episode, it’s this: How are you spending your time? How do you want to be spending your time? And are you making as much money as you want to make? And if not, separate the math from the drama, list out all the reasons why it’s impossible for you to make the money you want to make, and then get to work changing those things. I know you can do it. Thanks so much for listening, and I’ll see you next week! Love you Byeeeeeee!!!
Today we’re going to discover something that has the power to majorly change the trajectory of your business! We’re going to uncover the three main roadblocks that sideline many entrepreneurs (and people in general) and cause them to get stuck in inaction. You will learn specific ways to take massive action, get more done, and get those big results you desire. “Taking action...” seems easy enough, right? “Just do something!” As you and I both know, it’s not as easy as it sounds! If right now what you’re doing in your business is not leading you to the results you desire, then this episode is for you! To shed some light on WHY we’re not taking action and to help us understand how to turn that around and become massive action takers, I had the pleasure of interviewing Brooke Castillo. Brooke is a Life Coach—I actually call her a Life Coach Extraordinaire— who has worked with thousands of people (including yours truly) who have been stuck, are not reaching the goals they’ve envisioned for themselves, or ultimately just need a coach to shine some light on a path that can lead them to the promised land of getting a lot done and achieving big results. Quick note before we move on: I mention that I’ve worked with Brooke personally; I get more into it on the podcast, but in case you were wondering, I’m part of her Self-Coaching Scholars program. You know I’m on a mission to up-level my life, including my health and my weight, but I’m also on a mission to up-level my mind, and Brooke really gets into this in her program. I know that focusing on how I think about things will change both my personal and business life, and I believe it could do the same for you. Because I stand behind what Brooke does, I have become an affiliate for the program, so if you are interested in joining her program, too, click here, and let Brooke know I sent you! MANAGING YOUR MIND Brooke began with the idea that so much of starting and building a business is about managing your mind. She said, “There's no way around it, because you can understand how to do everything, you can study all the material, but until you understand that what you think about is going to create the emotion that either drives the action or the inaction, you're never gonna take the action.” Did you get that? This is important: What you think about creates the emotion that drives the action or inaction. If stress, fear and panic are fueling the action, you’re not going to be able to produce results at the level you want to produce. Brooke shared three entrepreneurial roadblocks—things that are keeping you from taking massive action. Reason #1: YOU’RE STUCK IN THE BUSY HUSTLE I can remember times, back when I was first starting out, when I was hustling my butt off. I was all over the place, connecting with different people, working with all kinds of clients, seemingly very successful—but the problem was, I wasn’t taking action on the things that could actually take me to a place where I could grow and scale my business. I was hustling. I was tired. But, to some degree, I was really just chasing my tail. This is what Brooke refers to as “The Busy Hustle”—a tiring hustle that’s produced by negative emotion: stress, fear, panic…[Insert your own word here!]. You want to avoid getting into a state of busy hustle, where you may be working hard yet aren’t producing anything. Instead your goal should be to get to a place of a productive hustle, where results are consistently produced. Brooke suggested if you want to produce something, don’t just sit down to “work on something.” Sit down to produce something! It’s important to change our language around this. Let’s stop saying, “I’m working on so and so,” and instead say, “I’m producing xyz,” or “I’m recording a podcast.” See the difference?! Reason #2: YOU’RE GIVING YOURSELF TOO MUCH TIME TO GET SOMETHING DONE Brooke believes that many people, especially those who are newer to business, give themselves too much time to produce a result. In the beginning you have more time than customers or clients, so you just expand the time you are “working” in your business. Yet while you may have the time, what you actually produce doesn’t line up with the many hours you’re working. Brooke suggests we take a look at the projects we need to get done, and assign a time frame in which we will get it done. For example: instead of my saying, “I’ll get the podcast recorded and uploaded to Dropbox by Wednesday”, Brooke would say, “I will have the podcast recorded and uploaded to Dropbox in one hour. I’ll sit down and get it done in that hour.” Of course you need to be realistic about time frames….some things are going to naturally take longer than others. And what sort of results will be produced if we go this route? Brooke says, “When you decide how long something will take and you stick to that, that’s when your production gets huge momentum.” Now for my fellow perfectionists out there: this can be tough, because you’re going to have to embrace the fact that you might produce some B-minus work. I know that’s hard to stomach! Brooke had to give me a little life-coaching during the episode, because I am not someone who got Bs in school! Brooke’s argument for producing B-minus work is this: “B-minus work can change people’s lives. Work that you don’t produce at all, does nothing in the world.” Brooke told a great story about producing B-minus work on a book she wrote, about how she got some negative feedback which caused her some real shame and embarrassment; but a letter she received from someone whose life was changed because of that B-minus book made her realize that had she declined to put out that work in favor of striving for an A-plus, that woman’s life would never have been affected. That was when Brooke decided that she was ok with B-minus work—because she knew it would still produce results. You’ll have to decide for yourself as to what level work you are ok with; but for Brooke, making this decision made a HUGE difference in her business, and because of that decision, she has reached epic levels of success. Reason #3: YOU’RE AVOIDING FAILURE AND DISCOMFORT Of course, no one loves failure and discomfort; but the truth is, if we’re going to learn and grow, there are going to be moments of failure and times where we will need to step outside of our comfort zone. Brooke explained that our brains are literally wired to avoid any kind of failure, and the only way to produce a successful business is to fail repeatedly. So what do we do?! We have to show our brains that we are not going to die because of discomfort and failure. We need to learn the process to move into discomfort, and then get comfortable with that discomfort. “Discomfort is the currency to your dreams.” - Brooke Castillo But discomfort is only part of the road to success for business owners. I love that Brooke shared that she schedules “Comfort-Time” in her week! This time is non-negotiable, and she schedules it in her calendar before anything else. Her comfort-time is comprised of walking her dogs, enjoying coffee and reading in the morning, and spending time with family. What would be the activities or non-activities that you’d have in your comfort-time? Schedule it in! And remember: this time is non-negotiable. Agreed? Work hard, play hard! : ) If you’re reading this and have not listened to the episode yet, I highly recommend you do. Brooke gives some great examples, insights, and encouragement that you’ll only hear by tuning in. Plus, Brooke is so fun! I guarantee you’ll not only learn a ton, but will enjoy a few laughs while listening to this episode, too! Thanks for spending time with me today! I think many of us spend so much time in hiding, we don't feel like we have much to be impressed about. On this bonus episode, I talk about the reasons why it's so important for those of us on the journey of self-improvement to impress ourselves. I also explore why I created my new program, Self Coaching Scholars, and lay out what I was able to create for all of you because of all the work I've done on myself... and getting out of my own way.
