Sometimes in life we get the chance to experience a mountaintop moment, and that's exactly what happened when I chatted with the brilliant Geneen Roth this week. Geneen wrote the landmark book Women, Food, and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything, which came out in 2010, nearly 15 years ago. A huge fan of this groundbreaking work? None other than Oprah Winfrey, so if it's good enough for Oprah, it's good enough for me. At its core, one of the central messages in Women, Food, and God is this: we often eat to fill a void or a hole for something other than food. Anytime we eat when we're not physically hungry — so, think emotional eating — we are hungry for something other than food. We are seeking nourishment from food to fill a lack of nourishment in another area of our lives. The good news, as Geneen and I discuss in today's episode? This is fixable! I am living proof, as I used to struggle with this but don't to the same degree anymore. I will probably always struggle with this to an extent, but reading Geneen's book (which I cried while reading!) ushered in a new chapter of my life where my issues with food didn't run the show. Geneen has candidly admitted that she has had food issues in the past, too, going back to age five or six. Her first diet began when she was just 11. I relate to this so much, as it was the same story for me. If you have ever eaten to fulfill an unmet need elsewhere, this conversation is for you. We must ask ourselves, Geneen writes, “What do I really want?” One's relationship with food is often directly correlated to one's relationship with themselves, and food is a mirror for how well we feel nourished in our lives. Today, Geneen helps us take the first step with an intention to heal a poor relationship with food; talks to us about why diet and restriction are not the answer to solving this issue; and shares what she's learned after the massive global reception to this book. This is by no means the only book Geneen has written, but Women, Food, and God is what we're zooming in on today. In fact, Geneen has written 10 books, and I was excited to hear her say on this episode that she's working on a new book! In addition to Women, Food, and God, Geneen has also written This Messy Magnificent Life, When Food Is Love, Breaking Free from Emotional Eating, Lost and Found, and many others. Over the past 40 years, she has helped thousands of people through her workshops and retreats and has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, The Today Show, 20/20, and The View. Geneen's books were some of the first to link compulsive eating and perpetual dieting with deeply personal and spiritual issues that transcend food, weight, and body image. She believes, as I do, that the way to transform our relationship with food and our body is to be kind to ourselves, not punishing. Take a listen to our conversation. For women, one of the biggest battles we fight is with the size of our bodies. Parents, media and society as a whole have conditioned us to believe that our bodies are wrong. Cue the deep-rooted lack of kindness towards ourselves, the spiral of suffering, the fraught relationship with food, and an endless pursuit of physical perfection. Every food choice we make - whether it's healthy or unhealthy - is run by our relationship with ourselves. Each bite falls into one of two categories. We're either confirming that we're not enough or we're affirming that we are enough. We might not even know it, but how we eat and what we eat goes back to the painful conclusions we made about ourselves in our formative years. What is the gateway to form a loving relationship with ourselves and food? How do we start befriending our bodies instead of battling them? In this episode, we're joined by multiple New York Times bestselling author, Geneen Roth. We talk about how to change our relationship with food by going back to where it all began. One's relationship with food is an outpicturing or expression of how you feel about yourself. -Geneen Roth Things You'll Learn In This Episode -The battle between food and self One's relationship with food is an expression of how you feel about yourself. What are the food rules we're following without even realizing we're following them? What are they connected to? -How to stop holding ourselves to awful standards As women, we're taught to evaluate ourselves from the outside. How do we start with our inner landscape instead? -When you're present, nothing is wrong Resistance to what's happening right now creates suffering. How can the question “If I had orchestrated this, what would I have wanted to learn” help us? Guest Bio Geneen Roth is the author of ten books, including her newest, This Messy Magnificent Life, and New York Times bestsellers When Food Is Love, Lost and Found, and Women Food and God, as well as The Craggy Hole in My Heart and the Cat Who Fixed It. Over the past forty years, she has worked with thousands of people in her groundbreaking workshops and retreats and has appeared on numerous national shows, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, 20/20, the Today show, Good Morning America, and The View. She lives in California with charms of hummingbirds; her husband Matt; and Izzy the fabulous, eating-disordered dog. Geneen Roth's pioneering books were among the first to link compulsive eating and perpetual dieting with deeply personal and spiritual issues that go far beyond food, weight and body image. Rather than pushing away the "crazy" things we do, Geneen's work proceeds with the conviction that our actions and beliefs make exquisite sense, and that the way to transform our relationship with food, our body, and so much more in our life is to be open, curious and kind with ourselves -- instead of punishing, impatient and harsh. Original Air Date: January 27, 2021One of Oprah's favorite quotes comes from German mystic Meister Eckhart. He said, “If the only prayer you say in your entire life is ‘thank you,' that will be enough.” Oprah says when she started keeping a gratitude journal more than 20 years ago, it was one of the most important things she's done. The daily practice of writing down five things to be grateful for balanced her life in subtle and inspiring ways. "It sounds simple,” Oprah says, “but when you go through the day staying conscious about what you put on your gratitude list, it shifts the lens through which you see the world.” In this episode of Super Soul, Oprah sits down with luminaries like Mark Nepo, Ram Dass, Elizabeth Lesser, Reverend Ed Bacon, Tracey Jackson, Paul Williams, Geneen Roth, Cheryl Strayed, Caroline Myss, Gretchen Rubin, Shawn Achor, Marie Forleo, Lynne Twist, Louie Schwartzberg and Norman Lear to discover that the practice of gratitude can elevate our lives to a state of grace. Interviews with these talented writers, speakers and thought leaders are excerpted from Oprah's Emmy Award-winning show Super Soul Sunday. You can also find this compilation and other insightful conversations in Oprah's best-selling book The Wisdom of Sundays. Ram Dass passed away in 2019. Norman Lear passed away in 2023. On today’s episode, we are talking about pain. I know, I know. Exactly what you want to talk about. Next Level Soul with Alex Ferrari: A Spirituality & Personal Growth Podcast
In this beautifully enlightening episode, we are joined by Geneen Roth, a woman whose life work revolves around transforming our relationship with food, body, and self. Her journey is a powerful testament to the healing potential within us all, as she shares her deep insights and personal experiences.Geneen Roth began her path driven by a lifelong struggle with food and body image. From the age of six, she felt a sense of not being enough, believing herself to be too fat. This self-perception led to a series of extreme diets and eating disorders, including anorexia and addiction to amphetamines. Despite reaching dangerously low weights, the self-loathing persisted. This cycle of gaining and losing weight continued until a pivotal moment when she realized that dieting was not the solution but part of the problem. It was then she chose to stop dieting and started to trust her body, leading to a significant shift in her life and work.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSTrust Your Body: Geneen's journey teaches us the importance of trusting our bodies and listening to their needs. Instead of imposing strict diets and restrictions, we should tune into our body's natural signals of hunger and fullness, allowing ourselves to eat mindfully and with kindness.Examine Your Beliefs: A key element in Geneen's transformation was examining and challenging the deeply rooted beliefs she held about herself. She encourages us to explore the underlying reasons for our eating habits, understanding that our relationship with food often mirrors our self-beliefs and emotional states.Practice Kindness and Tenderness: Geneen emphasizes the necessity of treating ourselves with kindness and tenderness, especially when dealing with food. This includes being gentle with ourselves when we slip up and recognizing that self-criticism only perpetuates the cycle of negative behavior.Geneen's work highlights the importance of understanding the cultural and familial influences on our body image and eating habits. She speaks of the early messages we receive from parents, media, and society that shape our self-perception and behaviors. In her own life, her mother's fears and criticisms about weight deeply impacted her, leading to years of struggle. She now helps others recognize and break free from these inherited beliefs. One of the most profound insights Geneen offers is the recognition that our struggles with food are often a gateway to deeper spiritual and emotional issues. She describes food as a Rorschach test that reveals our underlying beliefs about ourselves. By examining what we eat and why, we can uncover the emotional triggers and false beliefs driving our behavior. For those facing unsupportive environments, whether family, culture, or workplace, Geneen's advice is to stand firm in what you know is true for yourself. Change often requires courage and the willingness to be different, but ultimately, it is about taking responsibility for your own well-being and happiness.Geneen also provides practical tips for approaching food and eating. She encourages mindful eating practices such as paying attention to hunger signals, choosing food that genuinely nourishes the body, and creating a pleasant, focused eating environment. These practices help develop a healthier relationship with food and support emotional and physical well-being.In our conversation, Geneen's wisdom and warmth shine through. She shares that understanding and healing our relationship with food is not just about changing eating habits but about discovering who we truly are and what we genuinely need. This journey is deeply personal and spiritual, leading us to greater self-awareness and love.Geneen Roth's message is one of hope and transformation. Her story and teachings remind us that we have the power to change our relationship with food and, in doing so, transform our lives. By embracing kindness, self-awareness, and authenticity, we can find true peace and joy within ourselves. Please enjoy my conversation with Geneen Roth.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

Geneen Roth has written best-selling books on emotional eating. In an article called “The Treat Trap,” she reminds us that in troubled times sweets seem to offer immediate relief; but unfortunately, their “fix” doesn't last. The sweetness of chocolate lasts for a mere 30 seconds and after we've indulged, the original problem is still there. Then we have an additional problem: the guilt of an unhealthy indulgence on top of the original stressor. Guilty pleasures, even when sweet, ultimately leave a bad taste. If you find yourself looking for unhealthy distractions when you're dealing with a stressful situation- Avoid the treat trap! Instead of turning to chocolate, why not turn to God?

Geneen Roth coined the terms "permitters" and "restrictors" to differentiate between two types of (disordered) eaters -- the latter, who tend to restrict food and adhere to food rules and regulations; and the former, who reject food rules and regulations. The rule-followers vs the rebels, if you will. Which camp do you identify with? What can we learn about ourselves and our relationship with food through the lens of these concepts? We'll discuss: What does it look like to be a permitter vs a restrictor? Overeaters Anonymous meetings felt like a meeting of restrictors for Sarah; but not for Stef The importance of choice in our mentality Sarah's experience at the gym and having to "set goals" What if you are both a permitter AND a restrictor? I hate conflict. I hate confrontation. I'd rather wait and see if it goes away. And this goes with intimacy issues. I don't feel I have a healthy mindset about sex and what it should be in a marriage. That it's not about college hook-ups, one-night-stands and being taken advantage of or used. I loved the male friendships I had throughout high school and college but I was also "privy" to the conversations they had about women they were dating or had an after-hours experience with. Growing up, I had a mindset of men wanting one thing only- and not sticking around for what women truly need. What's really fun is our bodies changing. Whether you just had a baby or if you're like me, in perimenopause and have the Sahara Desert down there. It's hard to be intimate and enjoy sex when it's painful, awkward, and you feel you're doing someone a favor. Intimacy goes way beyond the bedroom. Intimacy with ALL of our relationships, and ourselves, takes us to the intimacy we have in our marriage or partnership. We need to connect more with what intimacy truly means first. And that starts with being intimate with ourselves- who we truly are and what drives us to live an incredible life. And when it comes to our confusing hormonal roller coaster we are on, don't lose hope. Educate yourself, know your symptoms, find ways to get your hormones in harmony. And just talk. Communicate. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to create a sex life that breaks world records. I hope you find some relief with this episode and know you have me to connect with. I'd love to hear your story. You are never alone. Mom Card Drawing of the Week: "Intimacy is a totally different dimension. It is allowing the other to come into you, to see you as you see yourself." -Osho Closing Inspiration: "Real intimacy is of the soul, and the soul is reserved. Intimacy is not something that just happens between two people, it is a way of being alive. At every moment, we are choosing either to reveal ourselves or to protect ourselves, to value ourselves or diminish ourselves, to tell the truth or to hide." -Geneen Roth

I used to follow endless food rules… Don't eat after XYZ time of night... Only eat whole foods, nothing processed... Don't eat ingredients you can't pronounce… Don't eat carbs outside of workouts… I think it's because I like structure and rules simplify things in my brain. But rules also inherently lead to rule breaking, which leads to guilt, which leads to a cycle of guilt and shame around food. Emotional eating is not the problem, but a sign of a deeper issue. Sometimes it feels like food can provide a solution, but it's only – and always – temporary.Geneen Roth is the author of several books on our relationship with food. She talks with Arina about how diet culture makes it harder for women to break the emotional eating cycle, and recommends seven guidelines to help people break free from destructive patterns, like eating without distractions and stopping when the body has had enough.Geneen also reveals how emotional eating can be an opportunity to examine deeper issues and limiting beliefs that may be holding people back.LinksThis Messy Magnificent Life: A Field Guide to Mind, Body, and Soul – Geneen's latest bookWomen Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost EverythingWhen Food Is Love: Exploring the Relationship Between Eating and IntimacyFeeding the Hungry Heart: The Experience of Compulsive EatingFat is a Feminist Issue, by Susie OrbachGeneen's next Zoom retreat

FOR TODAY'S RECIPE: https://karensteiner.com/fast-ethiopian-inspired-meal From Depressed, Food Addicted Vegetarian to Healthy, Happy, and Athletic Vegan I spent a lifetime fighting with my body, losing and then regaining weight probably a dozen times. I've also struggled with major depression since I was around 10 years old. On top of this I've hated just about anything that had to do with physical activity. I'd usually go on an exercise binge along with the diet du jour but, like the diet it never lasted long. Skip ahead to 2013, 9 years ago, I was seriously overweight, the depression surged, my knees and feet ached terribly. When I started going to bed at night hoping I wouldn't wake up I knew it was time to do something. But the thought of another diet and exercise program turned my stomach. Then I stumbled across Geneen Roth's Women, Food, and God. Through that book I discovered the art of mindful eating and it started me down a very different path. Mindful eating opened up a whole new world for me. I started to see my overeating patterns more clearly, and was able to kindly and compassionately identify myself as an addict. Gradually I was able to let go of many of the foods that were giving me the most difficulty. Mindful eating also helped me see that dairy was wreaking havoc on my body, so, on December 15, 2015 I decided to give up dairy as a two week experiment. I could have never expected such a dramatic result. I felt so good that I extended the experiment for another month and then decided to go a full 6 months. After 6 months of no dairy I felt amazing, my mood had improved, I'd lost 20 pounds with no effort. With the 20/20 of hindsight I could see my love of cheese for what it really was — Addiction. There was no going back. Next, I gradually gave up sugar, oil and salt and added lots more vegetables to my diet and started to exercise. What a surprise. I LOVE to exercise. In the past I'd done it grudgingly and hated it. But now I really like the way it feels to work up a sweat. In general I just feel so much better in my own skin. And I lost a total of 90 pounds to boot! Life is a journey, not a destination. I still consider myself a work in progress. However, over the years I've weathered a number of storms - the kind that life is just going to throw at you - and I haven't ever even had a thought about going back to my old eating habits. Now, I help other people as a coach. I want to be the kind of coach that I went looking for and couldn't find. I've identified the things that worked for me and they are: Mindful Eating: The first step in changing any habit is showing up Generosity: Be kind to yourself regardless of the number on the scale Patience: Life is a marathon, not a sprint. You can't run a marathon at a sprinter's pace The Big Picture: It's important to step back and look at the foodscape in which we live The Food: Of course it's about the food, it's just not all about the food Wisdom and Wellbeing: This is the end result, peace with food and peace with yourself go hand in hand I also teach an online class that will be running in December called Breaking the Food Seduction One Mindful Bite at a Time. The course is designed to be an introduction to why it's so hard to stop eating and what you can do about it. The special focus this time will be on holiday eating. This episode of INNER WORK is a spiritual exploration of hunger, desire, and how we relate to food. This discussion will be especially helpful if you have (or have ever had) a disordered relationship to food and eating. We'll examine what your relationship to food might have to do with your deeper hungers and desires, particularly if you're not fully allowing yourself to feel or express those desires. We'll also explore how the way you relate to food can often point to deeper places in yourself that are not being fulfilled or tended to. In this episode, I quote from two books: Eating in the Light of the Moon by Anita Johnston, and Women Food and God by Geneen Roth. Why is eating in moderation so hard? In this episode, Sarah & Stef discuss: What does moderation mean? Is the 2000 calorie RDA based on moderation? Human beings, for most of human history, have a really unhealthy relationship to money. It's one of those through lines of every age, culture, ethnicity, doesn't matter: people love money. Qoheleth puts his finger right on the problem. Pleasure and work, and other good things that we can love too much, are like the carrot at the end of the stick that, when you finally get it, leaves you disappointed. It promises rest, but only leads to restlessness. The Bible shows us that we can't rest from the love of money until we find the rest it promises elsewhere. Which is why Jesus is so adamant that he and he alone can give you rest. Our joy. Our security. Our happiness. He is our ultimate investment and retirement plan. It's all him. He's the only thing in life and death that cannot be taken away. Sermon Notes: https://www.bible.com/events/4888549922.05.15
Quote of the day: “When you believe without knowing you believe that you are damaged at your core, you also believe that you need to hide that damage for anyone to love you. You walk around ashamed of being yourself. You try hard to make up for the way you look, walk, feel. Decisions are agonizing because if you, the person who makes the decision, is damaged, then how can you trust what you decide? You doubt your own impulses so you become masterful at looking outside yourself for comfort. You become an expert at finding experts and programs, at striving and trying hard and then harder to change yourself, but this process only reaffirms what you already believe about yourself -- that your needs and choices cannot be trusted, and left to your own devices you are out of control (p.82-83)”― Geneen Roth, Women, Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything My answer to last week's question of the week: I'm a “C/D” personality type, I overanalyze, then get tired of things taking too long, and charge ahead, sometimes leaving a wake of destruction….or half done things….behind me. Stories from real life/what I'm doing to create more liberty in my life: Prepping for Teen Catalyst event Homestead updates: Piglets Wild bunnies Setting hens with different personalities News/personal development article highlight/book review: I've deviated from my reading list that I set for myself at the start of the year. I haven't given up on it, but I've inserted a couple other books that struck me. One is called ‘The Purpose Driven Youth Ministry, the other one is the ‘The Case for IBC'. IBC is the infinite banking concept, the idea of becoming your own banker.I don't fully understand it, but I'm highly interested and excited about the potential I see in it to build generational wealth, and I'm trying to get someone on the podcast to talk about it. Social media spotlight/podcast episode recommendation: Check out the https://firesidefreedom.net (Fireside Freedom Podcast), a collaboration effort with fellow podcasters,a discussion on how to create MORE freedom in your life. Also, go listen to https://afarmishkindoflife.com/205-personality-matters/ (A Farmish Kind of Life, episode 205). I had the pleasure of chatting with Amy Dingman all about personalities. It was a fantastic chat. Main topic: Don't allow other people to control you. Set out to do a thing, and we over analyze it. We allow other people's fears to control us We have a first instinct for the thing but end up listening to the voices inside our head or from other people telling us we can't do the thing, we don't have what it takes Then before we even have a chance to get started and suck at whatever it was, before we have a chance to learn the lesson that getting started would teach us, we get derailed and quit. If you go back to when you were a child, most likely you LOVED new experiences. You LOVED the zoo, and all the crazy looking animals. You LOVED going to the beach and picking up all the strange looking creatures and seeing how far out you could swim. You climbed as high as you could up the tree. You met and played with new people. You LOVED trying new food….wait….what? No you didn't. No kid likes trying new food. You explored new places and tried new things every chance you got. The fears you experienced came from the people around you. If your mom or dad was the fearful type, you too became fearful. If they were afraid of you being kidnapped, you too became afraid of every new person you saw. Another thing that may have made you cautious of trying new things is the fear of failure. School is a HUGE driver of the fear of failure. Everything we do in school is judged by the percentage of failure. You turn in a test paper and it's marked up with red ink accentuating all your failures. You're benched from the game because of your failures. You're forced to try to improve on things you're not naturally good...

In this week's episode, I will discuss How to Honor Your Feelings in 4 steps! I'll answer why codependents often honor the feelings of others while dishonoring their own You'll hear the four steps to honoring your own feelings: identify, invite, intentional action, and iterate We'll end with two anecdotes: “A Tale of Two Feelings,” to help you apply the steps in your own life without expecting yourself to be perfect, ya dummy! @therapywithmarissa on IG www.codependummy.com Thanks for listening! More deets on this week's episode: What does “honoring your feelings” even mean? To honor: According to Google, to honor means: to regard with great respect. Synonyms include salute, recognize, value, and cherish. Feelings: According to Google, feelings are: emotional states or reactions; the emotional side of one's character; emotional responses or tendencies to respond. To honor your feelings: Thus, to “honor your feelings,” I mean “to regard your emotional state, response, or reaction with value.” Your feelings matter. Unfortunately, a hallmark of codependency is honoring the feelings of others while dishonoring our own via: Denial: failure to acknowledge an unacceptable emotion or to admit it into consciousness Repression: the restraint, prevention, or inhibition of a feeling - unconscious Suppression: the conscious inhibition of unacceptable feelings - conscious I am not going to detail why it's hard for you to honor your feelings but let's just blame our parents, their parents, and their parents before them AND cultural influences: media, sexism, education system, etc. Blame them but now we, as young women, have to grow up, take responsibility and honor our feelings SINCE NO ONE ELSE HAS OR WILL unless we do. Today, this week, this month, this year--I want to challenge you to take contrary action and start to honor your feelings. Step 1: Identify your feelings Ask yourself, how am I feeling? How am I feeling right now? In psychology literature, we suggest that there are 8 primary emotions. I'm going to list them out and see which one resonates most with you right now: Angry Sad Afraid Joyful! Surprised Disgusted Ashamed Love These are the suggested 8 primary emotions and from there, we have secondary emotions which are emotional reactions to an emotion. Step 2: Invite your feelings “Pull out the welcome mat for your feelings.” It's either from Geneen Roth or Anne Lamott. Just pull out the welcome mat and invite your feelings in. If you are feeling angry, be angry. If you are feeling sad, be sad. If you are excited, then be fucking excited! Allow your feelings to take up space in you. Acknowledge the feeling and accept the visceral response. According to the research, feelings when they are felt, last 90 seconds. I haven't had an intense emotion and thought “Oh, let me time this!” But if you truly identify and invite the feeling in. Let it take up all the space that it needs--you may just be a minute and a half away from relief. Step 3: Intentional action This is where the honoring comes in. Intentional, meaning done on purpose, deliberate. Take conscious action, behave deliberately, based on your feelings. Your feelings are trying to communicate to you. Something is coming up that deserves attention. After acknowledging it, you may need to act on it. If you are feeling heartbroken because your partner is texting someone and you just saw it while looking at something on their phone--the intentional action may be to say “I just saw your texting that girl from work. That breaks my heart. I asked you not to. This is over.” Step 4: Iterate to develop Courage Iterate: repeat. It will get easier and easier every time. Remind yourself: identify, invite, intentional action, and iterate. Marissa said so. This whole dishonoring my feelings thing is getting old! Like the Tiger in The Wizard of Oz, I as a codependent, am working my ass off to develop COURAGE. It takes ovaries to do this girl. Internal strength in the face of others but it's possible. To help with your application, I'm going to share two anecdotes. I call this piece “A tale of two feelings:” Not going to my in-laws Inviting guests on that I knew were bad YOUR HOMEWORK: Identify, invite, intentional action, and iterate. That is your homework. Feel free to send any questions, application of the process to marissa@codependummy.com Before I say bye, I want to share a quote: ...If we could realize that the work is to keep doing the work, we would be much more fierce and much more peaceful… By Clarissa Pinkola Estes. That's a wrap. We are celebrating 8 months. Thank you for listening! Marissa's info: www.codependummy.com @therapywithmarissa on IG www.therapywithmarissa.com

Mark Krassner is one of my closest friends and one of the most committed coaches I know. He works with people on living their truth and pursuing their dreams. In this episode, I love what he shares about the importance of not overriding your emotions with intellect. We also talked about the importance of accepting and processing emotions that are driving your decisions to live a life of more ease and much more.HighlightsMark loves to help people find ways to step into their greatness.Have a plan for when you fail so that you can minimize the impact.Look for one thing that you can do consistently.Realize that when you fail today it is probably to a lesser extent than when you previously failed. Don't forget the progress that you have made. Your low points are probably much higher than your previous low points.Pay attention to your feelings and try and understand what is happening in your life that is causing those feelings.Try to name the emotion that you are experiencing. Usually binging is caused by sadness, anger, or fear.Try to focus on the emotion and understand where it is residing in your body. Then try to understand how the emotion wants to move you. What is the physical reaction that the emotion is causing?Give yourself permission to feel and experience the emotion.Try not to override your emotions. Try to actually feel. You can't focus on anything until you can focus on how you feel.Research shows that 20 minutes of human connection can reduce or remove cravings.Relevant LinksEpisode 9 - with Geneen Roth - https://www.buzzsprout.com/1462684/7887649 Mark's email - mk@markkrassner.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/markkrassnerhttps://www.instagram.com/markkrassner/?hl=en https://expectful.comAll Feeling Full episodes at https://www.feelingfull.com

I am a mom, wife and a lover of musical theater, staying active, talking and all things pink! My greatest love is educating others on how much our mindset determines the success of our health and how to use food as nourishment and not a security blanket. My BackgroundI fell in love with food and nutrition at a very young age. I battled my weight growing up and used food as entertainment and comfort. When I grew old enough to make more adult choices I began switching the foods I was eating to healthier options. This change sparked years of restricting and food obsession. Thankfully, right after I got married in 2006, I began working on my mind instead of my body. Learning to retrain my thoughts and replace food with alternate ways of coping was life changing!CredentialsI started my college career at The University of Missouri - Columbia, where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Soon after, I earned my Master's Degree in Education from Lindenwood University. I taught for seven years and decided to make a career change. I wanted to combine my love of teaching others with my love of health and wellness. So I earned my Master's Degree in Nutrition and Human Performance from Logan University. Since, I became certified as an Eating Disorder Recovery Coach, specializing emotional eating. Being present (and facing your emotions instead of just numbing) even in the thick of it. Not waiting until next week, next year, the next season of life to be happy, because there will be hardships in that chapter too. Sharing vulnerably, especially when it's uncomfortable, and how exchanging ideas facilitates us thinking differently. Stop talking to shitty people. Be the light & love yourself, but you gotta put good stuff in your ears, or you become shitty.
How has dieting effected us as a society? "Compulsive eating... is a way we leave our self when life gets hard." If we've all hit this pandemic wall, and are still not sure when regular socializing will happen again, how can we connect more deeply within the constraints and activities of what we're already doing? Sit with it. Speak it. Feel it. References: Women, Food and God - by Geneen Roth The Edge of Fear, Ep. 75 - Moving the Needle Forward with Jennifer Watson
