In Case You Missed It...
In the aftermath of the devastating Eaton Canyon Fire in Altadena, California, three Pasadena community leaders—Mayra Macedo-Nolan, Pastor Kerwin Manning, and Megan Katerjian—join host Mark Labberton for a sobering and hopeful conversation on what it takes to rebuild homes, neighborhoods, and lives. Together they discuss their personal losses, the long-term trauma facing their neighbors, the racial and economic disparities exposed by disaster, and how the Church is rising to meet these challenges with grit, grace, and faith. Their stories illuminate how a community holds fast when the media leaves, when vultures circle, and when the work is just beginning. This is a conversation about sacred presence, practical resilience, and the enduring witness of faithful service—even in the ashes. Mayra Macedo-Nolan is Executive Director of the Clergy Community Coalition of Greater Pasadena Kerwin Manning is Senior Pastor of Pasadena Church Megan Katerjian is CEO of Door of Hope Ministries Helpful Links and Resources Door of Hope Pasadena – Family homelessness intervention and fire assistance program Pasadena Church – Kerwin Manning's congregation and relief center Clergy Community Coalition of Greater Pasadena – Mayra Macedo-Nolan's organization supporting pastors and churches Isaiah 61:3 – “Beauty for ashes” verse referenced by Kerwin Andre Crouch – “Soon and Very Soon” – Gospel anthem of hope quoted by Pastor Kerwin Show Notes CCC (Clergy Community Coalition) rapidly pivoted to virtual meetings the morning after hurricane-force winds and fire struck Altadena. “We moved it to virtual… and then we had no idea what was gonna happen that evening and overnight.” —Mayra Macedo-Nolan After the fire started, 56 participants gathered online, including city leaders and faith-based partners, forming a core response network. “Everybody wanted to be together… especially in a crisis like this.” —Mayra Pastor Kerwin and his wife Madeline evacuated with almost no notice after hearing the sheriff outside their door. “We, Madeline and I, like so many others, were fleeing for our lives.” —Kerwin Manning For weeks, they didn't know whether their home was still standing; the priority became their church and community. “We didn't know if our home was standing… we were more concerned about our church, our community.” —Kerwin Pasadena Church began relief work immediately—even before confirming their own housing stability. “This is the first interview or anything I've done online back in my home.” —Kerwin Door of Hope's CEO evacuated with her children and lost her home; she quickly organized shelter responses for others. “I found out that my house had been entirely destroyed.” —Megan Katerjian Within 10 days, Door of Hope launched a formal housing assistance program for fire-affected families. “Door of Hope had launched what we call the Eaton Fire Housing Assistance Program.” —Megan The CCC became a spiritual and logistical backbone for Altadena's recovery, activating two decades of community-building. “This was a time that it was really important for the local clergy to be in conversation with one another.” —Mayra Pasadena Church became a distribution hub, serving as far east as any organization in the city. “We wore our church members out.” —Kerwin Over two months, the church distributed daily essentials from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., shifting to a long-term weekly rhythm. “We thought we would do it for a couple of weeks… we were doing it every day… for about two months straight.” —Kerwin “We might run out of water, we might run out of toothpaste, but we refuse to run out of smiles and kindness.” —Kerwin Altadena's west side—long a haven for Black and Brown families—suffered the worst structural damage and displacement. “Altadena had been a haven really for Black and Brown families who couldn't purchase homes anywhere.” —Mayra Many impacted residents were informal renters or multigenerational households without clear legal housing claims. “These are the stories of people… for whom there is no path back to Altadena anytime soon.” —Megan 11 churches were lost or damaged, including small and under-resourced congregations still unsure about rebuilding. “We lost 10 houses of worship, and one was partially burned… essentially 11.” —Mayra Local churches served both members and neighbors regardless of formal affiliation, often the first to show up with aid. “We don't do any of this work alone.” —Megan CCC supports 100+ churches across Pasadena with infrastructure, grants, emotional care, and community strategy. “We want them to be okay… and then as they serve their church members and the neighbors surrounding their church.” —Mayra Door of Hope offered security deposits, rent, emergency shelter, tool replacement, and even vehicles to affected families. “Beauty for ashes” “We just have to do more of it.” —Megan Volunteers gave out handwritten cards from kids across the country; some were shared at distribution events. “I've got a box full of cards from kids… just like it's going to be okay. We're praying for it.” —Kerwin A guiding pastoral metaphor: vultures circling a wounded deer, and the need to protect the vulnerable from predation. “The vultures were circling… and I covered the deer… and the vultures left.” —Kerwin “The needs have not slowed. … finances always follow just heart and compassion and awareness.” —Megan “You learn so much in the middle of crisis. One of the things that crisis does is it confirms character and you realize like what people are made of when you're going through something.” “Until. Until the need is gone, until we don't have to do it anymore.” —Kerwin The immigrant community faces a second “fire”—ICE raids and deportation threats layered atop housing loss. “The intersection of those… the two fires, the fire that we didn't know we were gonna have, and the fire that we knew was coming.” —Mayra CCC pastors protested ICE actions together, maintaining peace through community presence and music. “The pastors were there… and then it's just… it's a sacred party.” —Mayra Latino cultural traditions of protest, grief, and celebration shaped a healing, communal public presence. “We cry and we're gonna probably celebrate and eat food and dance together.” —Mayra Local leaders are pushing back against a 10-year recovery timeline with a goal of rebuilding within 3–5 years. “We reject that. She said, three to five years, that's what we're gonna push for.” —Mayra Community grief deepened when the first burned lot was sold; hope emerged again when the first rebuilding began. “There they go… it's gonna start selling.” / “We think there was… this collective celebration.” —Mayra “Soon and very soon we're gonna see the King.” —Kerwin Kerwin invoked Isaiah 61:3: “Beauty will rise” as a spiritual theme for their church's recovery ministry. “We believe that we're able to continue to do what we're doing knowing that, trusting that beauty's gonna rise.” —Kerwin The phrase “Altadena is not for sale” became a rallying cry—although some elders opted to relocate for peace. “It's up to you. Our prayer is that more people will want to stay than leave.” —Kerwin Ongoing challenges include zoning delays, state and county coordination issues, and political friction at the national level. “The church has always been a vital provider of resources, critical social services and resources in communities on an ongoing basis in normal time.” —Mayra ”The greatest sense that you get from being there is people are together. There's a sense of unity and community protection that is very palpable.” A sacred party Resilience and God's presence and strength “It feels like our president doesn't like us… our governor… whatever they've got going on impacts us.” —Kerwin “The church… is always a vital provider… of resources, critical social services… in normal time.” —Mayra About the Guests Mayra Macedo-Nolan is Executive Director of the Clergy Community Coalition of Greater Pasadena, where she leads efforts to strengthen faith-based response to systemic inequities in housing, education, and social services. Formerly on pastoral staff at Lake Avenue Church, she's spent two decades in community leadership in Pasadena and Altadena. Pastor Kerwin Manning is Senior Pastor of Pasadena Church and a founding leader in the Clergy Community Coalition. A longtime advocate for youth and justice, he's served the Pasadena community with a heart for unity, compassion, and spiritual renewal. Megan Katerjian is CEO of Door of Hope, a Pasadena-based nonprofit serving homeless and at-risk families. Heiden Ratner, Senior Pastor of WALK Church in Las Vegas, reminded us that the Christian life is about relying on the Holy Spirit for guidance, conviction, and strength.
Church membership is one of the key ways that we can experience our heavenly future in our earthly present. How this works can be a bit mind-bending, but hopefully this message clearly explains this kingdom principle. As you listen you'll see how church membership establishes a new connection between the future and the present, between heaven and earth, and as you fulfill that commitment you will see the blessings of God flow into your life in new and powerful ways. Send us a textStrong Women Strong WorldEsther | Part 4Senior Pastor Keith StewartJuly 20, 2025The book of Esther is one of the most creatively written books in the entire Bible. In fact, you'll be amazed by it. The lead character is female and she's a true hero. Not only does she help to avert a planned holocaust for the Jewish people, this story becomes the basis of the annual Feast of Purim which celebrates God's protection of His people. You'll also see amazing parallels between Esther's story and Jesus' story. Don't miss this next installment in our series, Strong Women, Strong World!____________Discussion Questions 1. Though Esther lived in a time of extreme patriarchy (where the rights of men were far greater than those of women), she was able to rise to a position of influence and use that influence to save the nation. What was true about Esther's day was also the prevailing culture throughout most of the history during which the Bible was written. What other stories of women in Scripture are you aware of who rose to prominence and leadership in spite of the culture of the day? Discuss the ways in which they were used by God. How do their stories inspire you? How are you or the women you know impacted by stories like these?2. Take some time in your group to discuss the following quote, “In the moral conflict now raging around us, whoever is on God's side is on the winning side and cannot lose; whoever is on the other side is on the losing side and cannot win” (A.W. Tozer). 3. God gave Esther a mentor in her uncle Mordecai. How important have mentors been in your own life and development? Have you ever had one? If so, in what arena of life? What was their impact on you? How has that person helped to shape the person you have become? 4. The Bible makes a distinction between time (chronos – which is clocks, days and calendars) and time (kairos – a pregnant moment in time, a pivotal moment in history). Esther's story is a reminder that we are where we are and who we are for a reason. And sometimes, everything seems to align to create an opportunity to exercise our gifting, utilize our influence and invest our talent – a Kairos moment. In reflecting on Esther's Kairos moment, are you aware of other Kairos moments in Scripture, in world history or US history, or in your own personal life? If so, describe what happened and why you think it was a Kairos moment. 5. The book of Esther is written in a very creative style. Pastor Keith talked about this very Jewish way of writing which is most commonly known as chiastic writing. As a group or individual, download both the simplified and detailed chiastic structure of Esther from the online message notes. Notice how each and every negative and dark outcome in the first half of the book is then corrected by a positive and hopeful outcome in the latter portion of the book? What did you learn about this style of writing? Why did Jewish writers use it? How does it help to clarify and amplify the message of Esther? 6. As Pastor Keith wrapped up the message, he focused on some of the parallels between Esther's story and Jesus's story. Can you name the parallels he mentioned and why? Are you aware of any other ways that Esther's story is similar to Jesus' story? If so, what are they?
In our new sermon series The Invisible Battle, Senior Pastor Chuck Angel explores the unseen spiritual warfare that impacts our daily lives, reminding us that our true struggle is "not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:12). Grounded in the Word of God, this series equips believers with truth, faith, and prayer to stand firm in victory through Christ!
In 1990 Pastor Steve Dighton and his family loaded up their belongings and made the journey from Piedmont, OK to Lenexa, KS to serve as the first Senior Pastor of the newly constituted Lenexa Baptist Church. Over the next 26 years, Pastor Steve would lead a small congregation of less than 100 people meeting in local schools, to a congregation of over 3,000 with multiple campuses. His ministry is marked by parked compassionate pastoral care, humble service, and biblical preaching. Prayerfully, these qualities continue define the ministry of Lenexa Baptist. Much of what we know here at Lenexa Baptist, we owe to the bold faith and sacrificial service of Pastor Steve. This weekend Pastor Steve will lead us in the study of God’s Word from Psalm 90. I pray that you will make every effort to join us for worship this weekend. Your attendance is a way of expressing gratitude to Pastor Steve for his faithful service to the Lord. Let’s pack every room and every service as we come with great anticipation to hear from the Lord through one of His faithful shepherds in the study of God’s Word. — Pastor Chad McDonald

At today's Youth Sunday Service, our Senior Pastor, Pastor Femi Paul, delivered a thought-provoking exhortation titled “WHY?” Drawing from Judges 6:13, he unpacked Gideon's honest question to the angel of the Lord: “If the Lord is with us, why are we facing so much trouble?” This powerful moment reflects the heart cry of many young people who grapple with life's challenges despite their faith. Pastor Femi reminded us that God is not afraid of our questions, and that such honesty can be the beginning of something divine. He emphasised that asking “Why?” is not a sign of doubt or weakness, but often a gateway to deeper understanding, divine encounter, and purpose. Like Gideon, those who question in sincerity are often the very ones God chooses to raise up. In our honest questions, God births strength, clarity, and a renewed sense of calling. The message was both a comfort and a challenge - an invitation to embrace our questions and trust that God is working, even in the “why.” Scripture Reference: Judges 6:13

In this teaching, Pastor Randy Mosher, Senior Pastor of Calvary Chapel of the Cumberland Valley, continues to lead us on a verse-by-verse journey through the Book of Jeremiah. In this teaching, we pick up in Jeremiah 26:10, where tensions rise in the temple as the religious leaders and officials react to Jeremiah's bold call to repentance. Though threatened with death, Jeremiah stands firm, delivering God's message with conviction and courage. Moving into Chapter 27, we explore a powerful object lesson involving yokes—where Jeremiah, under God's direction, physically wears a yoke to symbolize Judah's coming submission to Babylon. It's a dramatic moment that challenges both the political leadership and the false prophets who promised peace when judgment was near. Together, these chapters confront us with questions about whose voice we're listening to—and whether we're willing to accept God's truth even when it's uncomfortable. Come ready to dig deep into God's Word and be strengthened in faith, discernment, and obedience. Presentation Aids: Study Outline.

Send us a textStrong Women Strong World Ruth | Part 3Senior Pastor Keith StewartJuly 13, 2025She's an immigrant, a part of a hated and maligned group of people, a widow woman with virtually no rights yet she changed the course of human history. She became a model of God's love and through her lineage, Christ was born. Her name is Ruth. Don't miss her inspiring story this Sunday.____________Discussion Questions 1. In the first part of the message, Pastor Keith described the revolution of rising expectations that basically says we can endure all sorts of problems and adversity, but the injection of hope followed by another setback becomes practically unbearable. We see this played out in the story of Naomi and the journey to Moab to end their constant struggle for food. But once they arrived, the bad news began to pile up. Have you or someone you know ever gone through the revolution of rising expectations? What effect did it have on you or those you know? What was the eventual outcome of the situation? How well did you deal with it? 2. The story of Ruth is one where the main characters don't see the hand of God in their circumstances like we do as readers. Have you ever felt abandoned by God? In retrospect, can you see where and how God was at work even when you didn't sense it? Without being trite, how might you encourage someone going through difficulty who is struggling with finding God in their circumstances? 3. This story contains the stories of three widows who all make different choices.• Orpah - returns to the FAMILIAR • Naomi - gets STUCK in her sorrow• Ruth - determined to go on with LIFEHave you ever made any of those choices? And if so, why, where and when was that? Where did that choice lead you? 4. Hesed love is grace in action. It's the way God loves us. And it's the way Ruth loved her mother-in-law Naomi. Hesed goes beyond feelings or sentiments. We recognize it in how it behaves. Why was what Ruth chose to do an act of Hesed love? Has God ever put you in a situation where you choose Hesed over self-preservation or self-priority? What motivated you to make that choice? What difference, if any, did it make? 5. How is Ruth's character a type of Christ? What does it say that God would choose to include this story about an ordinary family choosing to do the right thing during a time when self-interest reigned supreme? During the time of the judges, there are two women who rise unrivaled to the top – Deborah and Ruth. What message does it send that God would make these two women the supreme highlight during a time of incredible darkness and infidelity to God's covenant?

Rev. Rufus Smith pauses our sermon series, "It Don't Mean That," to take time out to discuss "Theodicy: Regarding the Destruction of Camp Mystic: Why Must An Almighty Just Father Allowed this Tragedy." He teaches us that theodicy is a compound Greek word: “Theos” means God and “Dikē” means justice). So the word translates into the question: Why Would An Almighty, Loving and Just God Allow Injustice?Stay connected with Hope Church Memphis:Website • HopeChurchMemphis.comInstagram • @Hope4MemphisTikTok • @Hope4MemphisFacebook • @Hope4MemphisPrayer • HopeChurchMemphis.com/PrayerGiving • HopeChurchMemphis.com/Give

At today's Holy Communion Service, our Senior Pastor, Pastor Femi Paul, shared this impactful exhortation titled “Kingdom Mastery Called: Recognition of Opportunities.” He outlined the three essential components of Kingdom mastery: Wisdom, Insight, and the Recognition of Opportunities. Recognition, he explained, is the ability to perceive and discern what others overlook, enabling us to seize God‑sent moments. Citing Acts 28:26 (NKJV) - “Hearing you will hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you will see, and not perceive!” Pastor Femi emphasised that perception precedes recognition. The capacity to recognise opportunities will make you, while failure to recognise them can break you. As we partook of the Communion, we prayed for sharpened discernment so that we never miss the doors God opens before us.

This summer, we're taking a short break from our regular podcast format, and instead have selected various installments from past message series given by James Emery White at Mecklenburg Community Church where he serves as the Senior Pastor. All things gender continues to be a hot-button issue in today's culture, making headlines around the globe for various reasons. We thought that sharing this installment of the Meck series called "Gender" would set a firm foundation for everyone and answer questions that you may have when it comes to the theology of sexual identity. Episode Links Below you'll find the link to the full series if that's something you are interested in checking out, along with the sources that were used in the development of the message itself: “Gender” Preston Sprinkle, Embodied: Transgender Identities, the Church and What the Bible Has to Say (David C. Cook, 2021). “A Mister No More: Mr. Potato Head Goes Gender Neutral,” AP/USA Today, February 26, 2021. Colin M. Wright and Emma N. Hilton, “The Dangerous Denial of Sex,” The Wall Street Journal, February 13, 2020. Steven Rhoads, Taking Sex Differences Seriously. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. We'd also love to hear from you if there is a topic that you'd like to see discussed on the Church & Culture Podcast in an upcoming episode.
