This blogcast explores “Look Up, Set Out, and Give" written by Kate Fowler and read by Tom Carani. In this blog post, Kate recalls the example of the Magi and encourages us to keep our head held up and our eyes on our goal of deeper relationship with Christ. This Incarnation is awe-inspiring. So awe-inspiring, in fact, that it even draws strangers. The Messiah foretold was long-awaited by the Chosen People of God—the Israelites. And yet, how many do we see at the birth of our Lord? The Visitation of the Magi foretells the inclusion of the entire world in God's plan of salvation. He has come not only to redeem Jews, but Gentiles—peoples of every land and nation. As Paul wrote in Sunday's second reading, “the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.” What can we learn from the magi? In his homily on the Feast of the Epiphany last year, Pope Francis boiled it down to 3 things:To look up and see the starTo set outTo give freely Let us imitate the magi in our lives of discipleship. They were not complacent, but so observant that they were able to recognize God's sign: the star. “The Magi were not content with just getting by, with keeping afloat,” Pope Francis said last year. “They understood that to truly live, we need a lofty goal and we need to keep looking up.” They were vigilant, ready to go when the time came. And their hearts were receptive, disposed to the signs of the times. From there, they set out on a journey which would lead them to Christ himself. This journey required effort, planning, and sacrifice. And finally, they came bearing costly gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They met the generosity of God by reciprocating generosity. Pope Francis continued, “To give freely, for the Lord's sake, without expecting anything in return: this is the sure sign that we have found Jesus.” As we reflect on the significance of the Feast of the Epiphany, let us look to the example of the magi in our lives of discipleship. Let us look up beyond the distractions of the world in order to see God's star. Let us take the risk of setting out on our journey closer to Christ with joy. And let us give generously to a world which needs the generous love and mercy of the Christ-child. Question for Reflection: What are some things in our life that might distract us from seeing God in the everyday? Author:Kate Fowler is a staff member for the Catholic Apostolate Center. In this sermon entitled "We Are More", we were heavily armed with a revelation that devastates the scheme's of the enemy. Brother's Adam Corra and Justin Treaster made us aware of the schemes employed by the enemy that seek to get us to take ourselves out of the fight. After being made aware of these insidious tactics, the brothers impressed upon us with conviction who we really are because of who HE is. This message will enliven every area of your life, set you ablaze, and set you firmly on the rock so that you too might set out.

When the pillar of cloud moved, the people of God set out in Moses' time. They picked up their tent pegs and moved out as ordained by the Lord. Based on direction we received during our New Years Eve Bonfire, we've been called to do the same. Pastor Wade and Pastor Matt took this time to strengthen us in accord with this endeavor and to give clear direction as to how the people of God learn to set out at the Lord's direction and at his timing. They also clued us into some of the pitfalls that hinder from doing so with joy. Because of this strong, fatherly message we know that we have already been equipped with what we need. The only thing left is to look to the cloud with expectation to set out and that is exactly what we're doing.

Janet Yellen: On making economics work for everyone

“Economics should be about caring for real people.” Janet Yellen First female Secretary of the Treasury First female Chair of the Federal Reserve Chair of the Council of Economic Advisors First person to hold all three roles   The Artwork: Yellen's portrait in the Fearless Portraits project consists of an Ink and colored pencil drawing on a map of San Francisco. She's wearing a purple blazer with her trademarked popped collar. The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco she presided over from 2004 – 2010 is on the right side of the map, just over her shoulder.    The Story: Janet Yellen's philosophy on how economics should be about caring for real people had its roots in her childhood. Growing up in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood, she watched a stream of factory workers and dock hands visit her father's medical practice, paying $2 cash to be seen, or not paying if they couldn't. “I came to understand the effect that unemployment could have on people in human terms,” she says.  This philosophy was solidified in college during a macroeconomics lecture: “I remember sitting in class and learning about how there were policy decisions that could have been taken during the Great Depression to alleviate all that human suffering—that was a real ‘aha' moment for me. I realized that public policy can, and should, address these problems.” Fast forward 50 years and Yellen—in her role as president of the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank—would be among the first to raise concerns about the impending subprime mortgage bubble. Later, as vice chair of the Fed and then chair of the Fed, she oversaw a controversial plan to buy trillions of dollars in assets to prevent the economy from further collapse. Called quantitative easing, the plan may well have been the difference between keeping a job or losing it for millions of workers in the US economy.  Yellen's human-centric economics mindset was a marked shift in thinking for the Federal Reserve and later to the Department of the Treasury. As she put it, the job of central bankers as she sees it, “isn't just about fighting inflation or monitoring the financial system. It's about trying to help ordinary households get back on their feet and about creating a labor market where people can feel secure and work and get ahead.”  In her long and distinguished career, Yellen served as one of President Clinton's top aides, chairing the Council of Economic Advisors. Then, she led the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and became the first female Chair of the Federal Reserve system in 2014. Five days into Joe Biden's presidency, Yellen was confirmed by the Senate as the first female Secretary of the Treasury. She is the first person in history to hold all three of the US's top economic positions.    Background on Yellen: Yellen's household is a true economics powerhouse. She's married to Nobel laureate and UC Berkeley professor George Akerlof and their son, Robert, is also an economics professor.  Aside from collaborating on raising their son together, (Yellen notes that if all hours on parenting and housework were added up, Akerlof did “more than 50%”) the economics super couple also co-wrote a famous paper together. Drawing on their experience hiring a babysitter for their son, the paper illuminates why lower wages don't always lead to higher employment.  “Firms are not always willing to cut wages, even if there are people lined up outside the gates to work. So, why don't they?” asks Yellen. Their conclusion was that some companies choose to pay higher wages to attract better talent and motivate their employees to do good work.  As Yellen notes, “When you hire a nanny, the question you ask yourself is, ‘what's best for my precious child?' And do you really want someone who feels that your motive in life is to minimize the amount you spend on your child?”   Music: This episode contains music by Geovane Bruno and Praz Khanal.   Sources:  Akerlof, G. Seen for decades in tech circles as a fast follower rather than an innovation leader, Samsung today has grown to become a market leader in the United States and around the globe. They have captured one quarter of the smartphone market and have been pushing the envelope on every front. In SAMSUNG RISING: The Inside Story of the South Korean Giant that Set Out to Beat Apple and Conquer Tech, Geoffrey Cain offers a penetrating look behind the curtains of the biggest company nobody in America knows. Forty years ago, Samsung was a rickety Korean agricultural conglomerate that produced sugar, paper, and fertilizer, located in a backward country with a third-world economy. However, with the rise of the PC revolution, Chairman Lee Byung-chul began a bold experiment: to make Samsung a major supplier of computer chips. The multimillion-dollar plan was incredibly risky but Lee, wowed by a young Steve Jobs, who sat down with the Chairman to offer his advice, became obsessed with creating a tech empire. In SAMSUNG RISING, readers follow behind the scenes as the company fought its way to the top of tech. Today, Samsung employs over 300,000 people (compared to Apple’s 80,000 and Google’s 48,000). The company’s revenues have grown more than forty times from that of 1987 and make up more than 20 percent of South Korea’s exports. It is also one of Apple’s chief suppliers of technology critical to the iPhone, while its own Galaxy phone outsells the iPhone. Yet their disastrous recall of the Galaxy Note 7, with numerous reports of phones spontaneously bursting into flames, reveals the dangers of the company’s headlong attempt to overtake Apple at any cost.

3 Invaluable Lessons from Judy Ross You have to take every situation as a learning experience so you can evolve over time. Everyone in the department should have a role, and the department should be inclusive. Partnering is a great way to get or keep a project on track and meet goals.   This week, host Sue Dyer speaks with Judy Ross about how to make a project successful and develop the strengths of your team. Welcome to episode 22 Construction Nation!  This is Sue Dyer, your host of Construction Dream Team; where I interview industry leaders and experts so you can learn about the people side of construction and build your construction dream team based on OPE – Other People’s Experiences.  Accelerate your success by learning from those who have already been there and done that! I’m so excited because now Construction Dream Team has a LinkedIn Group.  I’ve been doing these interviews now for a few months and what I’ve realized is that we don’t have a place to continue the conversations.  We have a great interview and we learn so much, but there is no place to answer questions or talk and chat.  We will be doing that on our LinkedIn Group.  To make it easier for you to join the group we’ve created a webpage where you can click and join.  Go to CDTlinkedin.com you can join the group and join the conversation.  We are really looking forward to having some events – some of our guests will join us and we will have a dialogue.  It is a place for you to ask Sue questions, ask the CDT podcast guests questions, and to tell us what you would like to hear about.  About Guest Judy Ross (1:55) Judy Ross is the Assistant Director of Aviation at San Jose International Airport. Judy served as the interim Assistant Director of Aviation since 2017 and Deputy Director of Aviation for the Planning and Development Group since 2015. Judy’s experience includes managing the administrative functions of the Airport Director’s office, as well as the five airport divisions: Operations, Facilities and Engineering, Finance, Planning and Development, and Business Development. Judy’s Journey to Becoming the Assistant Director of Aviation at San Jose Int’l Airport (3:30) Faith has been in airports since she graduated from college (3:35) Faith tells a story about her very first project at her very first airport (4:00) She wanted to return to California and was offered the position of Deputy of Planning Development at Mineta San Jose International Airport (6:00)   Judy’s Strengths as a Leader (7:30)   Her focus is on the people, creating a team atmosphere, and having fun along the way (7:42) She studied the people she felt were great leaders (8:05) Take every situation as a learning experience so you can evolve yourself (8:15) Everyone has a strength, you just have to find their strength and channel it in the right direction (9:05) Judy’s Vision When She Became the Head of Planning and Design (10:48) When she arrived, she met with every member of the team individually and asked what was working, what was not, and what their goals were (12:35) She wanted to restructure the focus of the division to reflect what they do, not division titles (13:28) She wanted project delivery to be the key focus of what they did (14:00)   What Judy did to Articulate Her Vision to Her Team (15:40) She used feedback from her team and outlined their responsibilities (15:48) She brought changes forward to the Assistant Director and Director of the Department and got their buy-in (16:00) She structured a roll-out plan meeting with employees individually, to the division, and then to the whole department (16:40)   What Judy’s Roll-Out Plan Looked Like (18:15) It was important that she met with the team individually and found out how she could help them through the transition. The division-wide meeting was important so people could hear each other’s questions and leadership’s answers. And finally, the message to the department was also important for change buy-in.   How to Know That What You’ve Set Out to do is Successful (22:15) When employees self-identify as working for the new initiative (22:50) When employees love their jobs and look forward to work (23:10) When every person is assigned a role and on the same page and agreeing to the same goals (24:02)   What’s on the Horizon in Judy’s Future and for Her Team (25:50) They’re looking for a Deputy that’s the right fit for the division so they can continue growing and prepare for a larger capital program. She wants to have the team members ready for any future leadership programs.   About the San Jose Airport (30:00)   The Airport’s primary market is Silicon Valley but also Monterrey County and inland valley areas. The markets economic growth has allowed significant passenger growth over the past three years and is continuing to grow.  The Airport expects to hit 15 million passengers by the end of the year. With growth comes challenges - they are gate constrained, they are looking to expand their terminal, and they want to be prepared to deliver on their projects.   The Biggest Challenge Judy Has Faced in Her Career (32:58) She had a project from the start that didn’t have good scope and she had to dive deep into the project and stay there because the project manager was never aligned. They went through two bidding processes before getting a valid bid. The contractor wanted to pull off the project and Judy asked for two weeks to come up with a new plan, and she implemented partnering. The project ended on time and on budget and the team won a Diamond Level International Partnering Institute John L. Martin Partnering Project of the Year Award in 2017.   The Best Advice Judy Has Ever Gotten (38:00) It’s better for change to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary. It’s about getting people’s buy-in and that doesn’t occur overnight. Measure your path over time and you will see success. There may be times for revolutionary change but use it sparingly because it can be very disruptive to an organization.   Resources for Listeners   Our Iceberg is Melting: Changing and Succeeding Under Any Conditions by John Kotter IPI Magazine and IPI Conference   Contact Judy Website: https://www.flysanjose.com/ Email: jross@sjc.org Contact Judy on LinkedIn   Judy’s Parting Advice (42:55) It’s all about the people you work with, always put the people first (43:03) Use your own resources, discuss challenges with a mentor or respected friend (43:18)   Construction Nation! TRUST FALL   Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV) 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.   God in this verse calls us to do something none of us have been trained to do - to LEAN NOT...But to LEAN ON Him.   But how do we actually do this? Let’s take a look at a guy named Abraham.   Abraham Life Background Gen 12...LEAVE LAND - God appears to Abram while he is living in Haran with his family. God speaks life over Abram and gives him a purpose and call. He tells him to leave his native country to a “land that I will show you.” Gen 15...COVENANT - God promises to make Abraham the “Father of many nations.” He declares that through Abraham's seed a nation would come. Cue: Father Abraham. Gen 21...ISAAC’S BIRTH - Years later (while Abraham was 100 years old) God fulfills his promise and gives him a son named Isaac. God says this is THE SEED that the nation would come.   3 Decisions Of Trust…   1 - Set Out   Genesis 22:3 (NLT) 3 The next morning Abraham got up early. He saddled his donkey and took two of his servants with him, along with his son, Isaac. Then he chopped wood for a fire for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had told him about.   This is the first decision Abraham had to make. He had heard God’s voice. He knew what God wanted him to do. Now, he had a decision to make.   Abraham had to decide if he was going to obey or not.   James 2:21-22 (NLT) 21 Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete   Trusting is NOT sitting on the couch waiting for something to happen! Trusting is a step of action!   James 2:26 (NKJV) “...faith without works is dead...”   What is something in your life that God has asked you to trust him with that today you need to choose to “SET OUT” and actually do?...   2 - Walk On   Genesis 22:8 (NLT) 7 Isaac turned to Abraham and said, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “We have the fire and the wood,” the boy said, “but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?” 8 “God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham answered. And they both walked on together.   It is one thing for Abraham to “set out”...but it is an entirely different thing for him to stick with it for the long haul and finish.   This walking on is what I call the “In Between”   It’s in the inbetween that we are most tempted to quit, let our dreams die, second-guess our decisions, get distracted, get bitter, get offended - let worry sink in.   Psalm 37:3-5 (NLT) 3 Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. 4 Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. 5 Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you.   We get to decide - will worry distract us or will we walk on in trust?   Genesis 22:5 (NLT) 5 “Stay here with the donkey,” Abraham told the servants. “The boy and I will travel a little farther. We will worship there, and then we will come right back.”   Genesis 22:8 (NLT) 8 “God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son...   While Abraham “walked on” he knew WHAT he was “WALKING ON.”   Abraham was not just blindly walking in trust but he was consciously walking on God’s covenant to Him and to Isaac. He was reminding Himself of God’s promise. We can do the same! We have the strength to walk on through any circumstance because we can WALK ON GOD’S PROMISES (HIS WORD)!   You will have the grace to walk on when you WALK ON GOD’S WORD!   1 John 4:16 (NLT) 16 We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.   3 - Look Up   Genesis 22:13 (NLT) 13 Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 14 Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the Lord will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”   While Abraham was walking, God was working!   Unlike Abraham we do KNOW about the RAM!   Philippians 4:19 (NLT) 19 And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.   While you set out and walk on be prepared to look up because God is on the move working in your favor more than you even see.   Proverbs 3:5-6 (MSG) Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to God! Run from evil! Your body will glow with health, your very bones will vibrate with life!   Final Challenge - Locate one are in your life that God is asking for you to trust him...where are you at in trusting God with that? Do you need to set out, walk on or look up? Whatever it is can I encourage you today that life is best lived when we are trusting in Jesus!!
