Have we got a fun episode for you this week! SHADOW IN THE CLOUD from 2020 is part claustrophobic radio play, part creature-feature, part war movie, and part absolutely bananas-bonkers action fantasy. Chloe Grace-Moretz stars as a WWII gunner who boards a plane under top secret orders with some top secret cargo, only to discover mid-flight that the plane is under attack from a malevolent creature. We're joined this week by Vera Goudie, Jess Fischli, and Jocee Worley for a very lively debate about the film's merit, its message, and its manic, absurdist energy. Our individual opinions vary wildly on this film, but also guide us into a thoughtful reflection on the spectrum of perspectives in all walks of life, and provides a fascinating opportunity to make room for approaches and responses that differ greatly from our own. Also featuring a Patron-Only Whatcha segment, we hope you enjoy hearing this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it.Patron Only Segment: Whatcha Watchin' / Readin' / Listenin' To?4:42 - SHADOW IN THE CLOUDPlease note -- this conversation features a good bit of salty language. And also a fun little blooper after the credits.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Welcome to Guilty Pleasures, the show where we give in to pleasure, taking flight with a modern horror film to find out just how guilty we need to feel about loving or hating it. It was Jack's pick this month, and he's got us suiting up for WWII horror. We asked our adoring fans to choose between 2020's genre-bending SHADOW IN THE CLOUD and 2019's vampire horror BLOOD VESSEL. In another razor-thin online vote, SHADOW IN THE CLOUD just nudged out the competition to earn its tour of operation on the podcast. So come along for the ride as we earn our stripes and find out if SHADOW IN THE CLOUD IS a soaring pleasure or a guilty sin that crashes and burns. ... THIS MONTH'S THEMED SPIRIT: SIDECAR SALLY Coat the rim of a coupe glass with sugar, if desired, and set aside. Add 1 1/2 ounces cognac, 3/4 ounces of orange liqueur (such as Cointreau), and 3/4 ounces of lemon juice (freshly squeezed if possible) to a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into the prepared glass. Garnish with an orange twist if desired. Enjoy this slightly sweet, sophisticated treat! ... VOTE FOR NEXT MONTH'S GUILTY PLEASURE! It's Nic Cage horror, and we're picking between RENFIELD (2023) and PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND (2021). It was Steph's pick this month, and she wanted to say farewell to summer by swimming with the sharks. Chris does a short review of the 2020 film Shadow in the Cloud.
Beulah Koale is a New Zealand actor best known for portraying Officer Junior Reigns in CBS reboot series Hawaii Five-0.Koale made his Hollywood film debut as a lead in Universal/DreamWorks' THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, which opened wide in October 2017. Directed by Jason Hal (American Sniper), Koale starred opposite Miles Teller in the war drama about a group of U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq struggling to integrate back into family and civilian life, while living with the memory of a war that threatens to destroy them long after they left the battlefield. Koale portrayed ‘Solo,' based on the real-life soldier Tausolo ‘Solo' Aieti, who saved two comrades in Iraq but struggled to cope with the death of a third who died in combat. Gremlins aren't just cuddly, aquaphobic Christmas monsters - they're also winged monsters that bedeviled allied aircraft in WW2. This week, the crew heads to the South Pacific for a pulpy, girl-power-bottle-action-creature feature mashup that breaks all the laws of physics. Also, just how depraved is "The Sadness?" Is it ultra-violent smut? Maybe. We discuss the new Taiwanese release on Shudder. Motion Picture Terror Scale: 2. Quality: 3.5. SHADOW IN THE CLOUD is an action horror movie about a female World War II pilot traveling with a top-secret package on a B-17 Flying Fortress. The crew is suspicious of the last-minute passenger but must go along with her to stay on schedule. With no room on the plane, Maude Garrett rides in the belly gun turret of the plane. Communicating by radio, tensions rise between the crew and Garrett as they wonder what her top-secret mission entails. The all-male crew berates Garrett with sexist comments and excessive crass dialogue. However, the crew's suspicions are forgotten when a monster starts to attack.

This week we deal with strange accents, gremlins, gravity defying stunts all mixed up in a WW2 setting. Is this a modern classic or a calamity to be avoided, only the goats have the answer.
EMTs, what better way to wrap up our 'horrors of the sky' rock block with a movie that does not contain enough movie to fill an entire podcast episode? We're talking about the 2020 film "Shadow in the Cloud." It is what we in the industry call "a doozy." Special topics for your consideration include: a healthy amount of "what's in the booooox?" talk, stolen movie valor, some questions about depictions of feminism, um...Thanksgiving? There really wasn't much to talk about. Chloe Grace Moretz was in the remake of "Suspiria," and that one really befuddled us too. It's Episode 232.
Well, that was...interesting. Shadow in the Cloud was one of the first (if not the first) releases of 2021, and let's hope things go better for films this year. Listen in to hear what we thought of this World War Two-ish movie. "While traveling with top-secret documents on a B-17 Flying Fortress, a female WWII pilot encounters an evil presence on board."This movie was creative to say the least, but we had some disagreements on where that creativity took the film. Enjoy!
In this episode, we attempt to take you through every twist and turn of the new "gremlin on a plane" movie, Shadow in the Cloud. We also shine a spotlight on the action/horror subgenre, discuss a movie that does a far better job of fusing feminism and genre filmmaking: 2020's The Invisible Man, and do crappy impressions of celebrities while praising the overlooked Overlord.
