Michelle Harris, Senior Consultant at Instructional Coaching Group (ICG) has spent almost three decades as an educator, starting as a Special Education Paraprofessional in Salt Lake City, Utah before completing her Masters in Teaching at Pacific University and teaching middle school in El Cajon, CA and Beaverton, OR. She served as an instructional coach for teachers and students in a comprehensive 6-8 middle school as well as a K-8 school. She then became an administrator in a 6-12 IB school, and two comprehensive 6-8 middle schools. Michelle is a seasoned staff developer, certified in multiple Training of the Trainer programs such as Sheltered Instruction, Data-driven Decision Making, Effective Teaching Strategies, and Non-Fiction Writing. She has worked for Jim Knight since 2012, after participating in a Coaching Study with Jim through the University of Kansas in 2009-2011, and has facilitated workshops, coached, and keynoted across the United States and Canada, as well as in multiple European countries, Asia, and Africa. Recently, Michelle partnered with Jim Knight, Sharon Thomas, and Ann Hoffman to author The Instructional Playbook: The Missing Link for Translating Research Into Practice and Evaluating Instructional Coaching: People, Programs, and Partnership.   Through ICG, Michelle facilitates workshops, coaches, and provides consulting for coaching programs around the world. She lives in Portland, OR with her husband, two sons, and three cats, and one small corgi.   Episode Notes: -Michelle has been in education for almost 30 years and was trained with Jim Knight in instructional coaching. -A coach is a partner who opens up a physiologically safe space with time for thinking, reflecting, problem solving and ultimately turning all that talk into action in the classroom, promoting change.  -Sometimes in coaching there is a lack of role clarity. If you do not have clarity on what you do and how you do it within the system, it is hard to do a quality job in coaching. -Teacher evaluations do not fit coaching.  -Coaches need an evaluation system that is 100 percent aligned to the outcomes we are seeking. It is critical to have role clarity as an instructional coach. -We speak about surface coaching versus deep coaching. Both are vital to the role of coaching. Surface coaching helps to build rapport and enhance your street credit. Deep coaching is the impact cycle and doing coaching cycles with educators around specific goals.  -Collect data on who is coming to you and what are they asking for, what patterns are we noticing, this helps us impact PD in our buildings or systems. -Collect data on the impact cycle: where did you start? What was your goal?  What strategies did you utilize? What was your end goal? How long did it take kids to meet that goal? What tweaks did you make along the way? -Collect data to show your coaching impact. Show the difference you are making. Collect that evidence of difference making.  -Learning Architecture with support for the coaches is vital.  -Coaching is not fixing people. We need an asset model. There should not be a stigma in education for using a coach. Jim wrote the first major article about instructional coaching for the Journal of Staff Development, and his book Instructional Coaching (2007) offered the first extended description of instructional coaching. Jim's book Focus on Teaching (2014) was the first extended description of how video should be used for professional learning. Recently, writing with Ann Hoffman, Michelle Harris, and Sharon Thomas, Jim introduced the idea of instructional playbooks with their book on that topic. Jim has written several books in addition to those described above, including Unmistakable Impact (2011), High-Impact Instruction (2013), Better Conversations (2015), The Impact Cycle (2018), and The Definitive Guide to Instructional Coaching (2021). From age 10, Jasmine Thomas of the Connecticut Sun excelled at the game of basketball. Today her mom, Sharon Thomas, joins us to share her daughter's story.   We talk about the experience of college recruitment, playing for the Duke Blue Devils, and being drafted 12the overall in 2011 by the Seattle Storm. Prior to her rookie year, she was traded to Washington, playing for the Mystics, the Atlanta Dream, and Connecticut where she's been since 2015.  We hear about the basketball journey that has taken her daughter around the world, from Russia to Israel and many other countries in between.  We talk about the impact of the pandemic on Jasmine's career, how she's gotten through it and continues to cope with the changing world including creating her own lifestyle blog. Multistem®, a drug-like cell therapy to treat stroke with adult stem cells is developed by Athersys (ATH-er-sis), a clinical-stage biotechnology company founded by a group of leading scientists in 1995. In Episode 91, we interviewed Sharon Thomas, a survivor who experienced miraculous recovery after given multistem. Athersys is conducting the Phase 3 clinical trials for MultiStem®. During Phase 2 trials in the U.S, the studies showed that MultiStem® could extend the treatment window for ischemic stroke patients to 36 hours, compared to the 3 or 4 hour window to treat patients with TPA. That meant individuals who may have had a stroke in their sleep, or patients who did not recognize the symptoms right away, might still have a favorable outcome with MultiStem® versus TPA. Multistem® has obtained FDA’s Fast Track designation. It is also in Phase 3 studies in Japan. Our guest today is Gil Van Bokkelen, CEO of Athersys, who will share with us exciting progress of Multistem®.

Sharon Thomas was a road construction worker in Oregon, whose life took an unexpected turn at age 45 when she collapsed with a massive stroke that left her unable to walk, talk or even swallow. Her stroke struck one night while she was clearing dishes after dinner at her parents' house near Roseburg, Oregon. Her father noted that something was wrong with Sharon and that she may be having a stroke. She felt herself falling--knowing she was going to fall but not why--and was caught by John, her husband. Sharon was airlifted from a nearby hospital to OHSU in Portland. John was told to prepare for a long period of rehab for Sharon and that life would never return to normal. Fortunately, doctors at OHSU told John about a trial for a cell therapy from Athersys, Inc., called MultiStem. The study was double blind and it was disclosed after the Phase 2 trial ended that Sharon did not receive a placebo. She did receive MultiStem. After a period of physical, occupational and speech therapy, Sharon returned to work, which required lifting 30-pound sandbags and driving heavy road construction equipment. She returned to coaching basketball and because of her continued recovery, Sharon felt confident enough to change jobs recently to work in an all-new field.
