Ten Questions to Open Coaching Conversations

The Coaching Crowd Podcast with Jo Wheatley & Zoe Hawkins

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2026 21:35

What becomes possible when the first question in a coaching session helps a client arrive more fully? The way we open a coaching conversation matters because it can shape where a client places their attention, how present they become and what they feel able to explore. Yet it is easy to fall into familiar habits and rely on the same dependable opener without considering whether it is right for the person sitting in front of us. In this episode, we explore a collection of powerful coaching questions designed to create greater focus, depth and possibility. Some help clients sort through competing priorities, while others connect them with what feels most alive, what they need to leave outside the room or where courage might take the conversation. We also consider how a coach can listen beyond the words, noticing shifts in energy, emotion, hesitation and body language. We discuss questions that support progress when a client feels overwhelmed, as well as those that make space for uncertainty, unfinished business or challenges they have been trying to resolve alone. Questions such as "What part of you most needs a voice today?" and "What have we not explored yet together?" can help clients reconnect with overlooked parts of themselves and open areas they may now feel ready to discuss. We also explore how to strengthen the coaching alliance by asking what the client needs from us in that moment, whether that is challenge, compassion, silence or help slowing down. These questions are not intended to be used mechanically. Our hope is that this episode helps you expand your coaching toolbox, move beyond habitual openers and choose questions that reflect the client, the purpose of the session and how they are arriving that day. Coaching Questions Explored: Of everything that is competing for your attention right now, what feels most important for our conversation today? What feels most alive for you today? Before we begin today, what do you need to leave outside the room so you can be fully present here? If we were courageous today, where might this conversation take us? If you could make progress on one thing today, where would we focus our conversation? What feels uncertain, unfinished or unresolved at the moment? What have you been trying to resolve yourself that remains unresolved? What is unresolved that you have been working on alone? What part of you most needs a voice today? What have we not explored yet together that would be helpful for you? What would you like me to be particularly mindful of as your coach today? What is possible for you here today? What conversation have you been avoiding with yourself or someone else? Timestamps: 00:01 Why the opening question matters 01:47 Moving beyond habitual coaching openers 02:24 Sorting through competing priorities 03:22 What feels most alive today? 05:15 Leaving distractions outside the room 06:48 Inviting courage and vulnerability 08:29 Focusing on progress and momentum 09:43 Welcoming uncertainty and unfinished business 11:22 What has the client been resolving alone? 12:10 Giving different parts of the client a voice 14:10 Exploring what has not been discussed yet 15:04 The power of possibility 15:42 What should the coach be mindful of? 18:07 Holding silence and strengthening the coaching alliance 19:38 What is possible today? 20:31 The conversation the client may be avoiding 22:51 Choosing questions that support the coaching goal 23:56 Finding the right coach training programme Key Lessons Learned: The first question in a coaching session can shape the tone, direction and depth of the entire conversation. Using the same opening question with every client can create stale coaching patterns. A client's energy, hesitation, emotion and body language can provide as much information as their spoken answer. Some clients need help sorting through competing priorities before they can identify a meaningful focus. Coaching questions can invite courage and vulnerability without assuming the client already feels courageous. Progress-focused questions can help overwhelmed clients move away from broad goals and towards achievable momentum. Acknowledging uncertainty and unfinished business can help clients feel understood before attempting to create solutions. Asking what a client has been handling alone can surface opportunities for support, connection and shared exploration. Questions about different parts of the self can help clients reconnect with voices that have become quiet or overlooked. Asking the client what they need from the coach strengthens the coaching alliance and supports effective re-contracting. Powerful opening questions should remain connected to the client's wider coaching goals and the purpose of the session. Coaches should ask questions with genuine curiosity rather than delivering them as scripted coaching techniques. This week we begin a new Coaching Cafe series focused on the mid-year performance review. While many leaders and HR teams are preparing for the usual cycle of meetings and conversations, some organisations are taking a very different approach. Increasingly, companies are deciding to move away from formal mid-year and annual review processes altogether, citing the time involved, low engagement and delayed feedback as outweighing the benefits. At Open Door, we have long advocated for regular check-ins, timely feedback and ongoing coaching conversations, rather than relying on a single once or twice-yearly event. It seems this thinking is becoming increasingly relevant.Join Dr Natalie Ashdown and leadership and HR specialist Paula Jones-Hunt as we explore:✓ The trends shaping performance reviews and why some organisations are moving away from formal mid-year and annual events✓ The role of coaching in performance reviews✓ How leaders and coaches can take a coaching approach to improve the process and create more meaningful engagementWhether you are beginning the performance review cycle — or rethinking it entirely — this webinar will provide practical insights and valuable approaches to support better conversations.Transcripts can be found here: Thanks for listening! Not only was it dumb to throw something on the ice during the play, but doing it at a moment when the Oilers were buzzing was basically unforgivable. Send us Fan MailTwo hundred episodes sounds like a number until you realize what it represents: 200 chances to sit down with real coaches and talk about what actually builds players. I'm Coach Ken Carpenter, and this milestone is my thank-you note to every coach listening on the way to practice, after a tough loss, or while looking for a better way forward. The biggest surprise from interviewing coaches across travel ball, high school baseball, college baseball, and beyond is how often the same themes repeat. Great coaching starts with relationships. Players don't buy into your system until they believe you care about them. Development beats winning when you zoom out far enough, because daily improvement in skill work, practice habits, and mental performance creates the kind of team that can handle pressure. And real team culture isn't created in a speech; it's built through consistency, clear expectations, and coaches showing up the same way every day.I also share the five lessons that keep coming back after 200 conversations: relationships first, long-term player development, consistency builds culture, great coaches keep learning, and baseball teaches life. Along the way, I read listener reviews, celebrate what this community has become, and recognize our sponsor, the Netting Professionals, who support programs one facility at a time.If you get value from Baseball Coaches Unplugged, subscribe, share it with another coach, and leave a rating and review so more coaches can find these baseball coaching tips and player development strategies.Support the showFollow:  X | Instagram @Athlete1Podcast Website - https://www.athlete1.netSponsor: The Netting Professionalshttps://www.nettingpros.com

In this episode Kim talks about how we can build teacher agency during coaching conversations - by providing structure to their thoughts.  This episode was inspired by a conversation with one of Kim's clients in The Coach Certificate and Mentorship Program when they were going through the “In Practice” module of the course. They were starting to have coaching conversations for the first time and realized that even though their conversations with Kim during the Office Hours in the program felt so natural, there was actually a structure and a process that she was following, even though it felt so seamless in the moment! If we want our coaching conversations to feel seamless and natural, we need to create space for unpacking a lot of ideas, while at the same time providing structure - this is part of the art of coaching. Are you stuck seeing a situation in only one way? That question is at the heart of this week's conversation, where we explore the powerful coaching skill of reframing, the gentle art of helping someone shift their perspective and unlock new possibilities. In this episode, we dive into the essence of reframing, what it is, why it matters, and how it can bring transformation in coaching conversations, leadership, and everyday life. We reflect on how reframing isn't about ignoring facts or bypassing emotion, but about opening up the lens to see a challenge from a more empowering viewpoint. Zoe was reminded of the times when a simple reframe from Jo had disrupted her own thinking, like during a long car journey when she was convinced Jo couldn't buy a house, and by the end, felt completely differently. Reframing can be that subtle nudge that opens up resourcefulness, choice, and ownership. We explore five types of reframing: Context Reframes; shifting the circumstances in which something is viewed Content Reframes; changing the meaning assigned to an experience Positive Intent Reframes; identifying the good intention behind behaviour Systemic Reframes; zooming out to consider relationships and environments Temporal Reframes; introducing time as a tool to gain distance and clarity What I loved most about this episode was reflecting on how everyday reframes, whether in coaching, parenting, or leadership, are already part of our lives. And when we bring awareness, sensitivity, and timing to them, they can become incredibly effective tools for transformation. Whether you're a coach, manager, or simply someone curious about human behaviour, this episode will deepen your understanding of how reframing can cultivate emotional agility, confidence, and self-leadership.   Timestamps: 00:00 – Introduction to reframing and its purpose in coaching 01:25 – Getting stuck in thinking and how reframing unlocks options 04:12 – Real-life example of reframing during a conversation 06:32 – The emotional shift and reclaiming ownership through reframing 07:27 – What makes reframing different from asking questions 09:26 – Five types of reframes introduced 10:47 – When not to reframe: importance of timing and sensitivity 12:12 – Reframing self-judgement and guilt (e.g. being “too controlling”) 16:04 – The positive intent behind perfectionism 19:16 – Systemic reframes and reframing conflict within a team 22:08 – Time/temporal reframes and the value of future or past perspective 24:17 – Everyday leadership uses of reframing 25:15 – Deep presence and listening for meaning as a foundation for reframing   Key Lessons Learned: Reframing is about shifting meaning, not denying reality Timing is everything: don't rush a reframe when emotions are raw Coaches should stay unattached to whether a reframe “lands” or not There are multiple types of reframes; context, content, positive intent, systemic, and time-based Leaders can use reframing to support change, conflict, and morale in teams Reframing helps people reconnect with strengths, possibilities, and self-compassion Everyday reframes already exist in our language, we can choose to use them more consciously “What if” questions are powerful reframe starters Listening for assumptions and belief patterns helps shape relevant reframes Coaching skills like reframing support flexibility, meaning-making, and resilience   Keywords: Reframing in coaching, Emotional coaching, Confidence building, Coaching skills for leaders, Systemic reframing, Coaching mindset, Cognitive flexibility, Positive intent, Coaching techniques, Meaning-making in coaching,   Links & Resources https://mycoachingcourse.com – Quiz: Which coaching course is right for me? ·        Coaching Summit 2025: https://igcompany.co.uk/summit25

How victim, villain, and helpless stories sabotage our most important conversations. The hardest conversations aren't just about what you say to the other person. According to Joseph Grenny, critical conversations begin with the stories that you tell yourself. As a leading expert on business performance and communication, and a New York Times bestselling co-author of Crucial Conversations, Grenny explains that navigating high-stakes communication starts by examining the internal narratives we bring into these situations. “You and I use three consistent types of stories in these moments that don't serve us well,” he says: Victim stories (emphasizing our innocence), villain stories (demonizing the other person), and helpless stories (justifying our poor responses). "Those three kinds of stories are what amp up our emotions and justify us in our unhealthy responses," he says.In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Grenny joins Matt Abrahams to share practical strategies for mastering difficult conversations through what he calls "TLC" — truth, love, and competence. Coaching Conversations with Jim Knight

In this episode of the Coaching Conversations podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jessica Wise to explore what I call the Seven Success Factors for effective instructional coaching. These factors come from years of research and practice, and they represent what I've seen work in real schools with real teachers.Jessica and I talked about the importance of approaching coaching as a partnership, where both coach and teacher learn from each other. We also dug into how crucial it is to use data—not just to measure success, but to guide our decisions in a way that truly supports student learning.Throughout the conversation, we kept coming back to one central idea: coaching must be rooted in empathy, trust, and a relentless focus on student outcomes. We talked about how leadership can make or break coaching programs, and why a supportive culture is essential if we want teachers to grow. Teaching is deeply personal work, and coaching needs to honor that by being compassionate, collaborative, and always grounded in respect.Access the "Teach to Win" article referenced in this podcast.Thank you for being a part of our community. Feedback: We love hearing from you!
