Dr. Jim Knight has been on my show two times previously and, in these episodes, we took a deep dive into the work he has done in the field of instructional coaching for the past two decades. In both of these episodes, Jim shared great insight into what instructional coaching is and how coaches work alongside educators to bring out their very best in order to have a positive impact on student learning. Although Jim and I will do a review of instructional coaching in our episode today, the focus of our conversation is more about Jim's recent learning in relation to his own research, what he feels most compelled to share with the world through his work and how schools and their leaders can best support coaches in order to help them thrive within their roles. I hope you tune into today's episode and share it with anyone who you feel will benefit from listening to it. Thanks. About Jim:Jim Knight, Founder and Senior Partner of Instructional Coaching Group (ICG), is also a research associate at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. He has spent more than two decades studying professional learning and instructional coaching. Jim earned his PhD in Education from the University of Kansas and has won several university teaching, innovation, and service awards. The pioneering work Jim and his colleagues have conducted has led to many innovations that are now central to professional development in schools. Jim wrote the first major article about instructional coaching for the Journal of Staff Development, and his book Instructional Coaching (2007) offered the first extended description of instructional coaching. Jim's book Focus on Teaching (2014) was the first extended description of how video should be used for professional learning. Recently, writing with Ann Hoffman, Michelle Harris, and Sharon Thomas, Jim introduced the idea of instructional playbooks with their book on that topic. Jim has written several books in addition to those described above, including Unmistakable Impact (2011), High-Impact Instruction (2013), Better Conversations (2015), The Impact Cycle (2018), and The Definitive Guide to Instructional Coaching (2021). Knight has also authored articles on instructional coaching and professional learning in publications such as Educational Leadership, The Journal of Staff Development, Principal Leadership, The School Administrator, and Kappan. Jim is also a columnist for Educational Leadership.Through ICG, Knight conducts coaching workshops, hosts the Facebook Live series, “Coaching Conversations,” and provides consulting for coaching programs around the world.Connect With Jim:WebsiteTwitterOur Previous Two Podcasts:January 2021September 2021
Special guest: Phyllis Fagell, LCPC Middle school is a time of seismic shifts—everything is changing from friendships and relationships to hormones, expectations and not to mention the physical, intellectual, moral, social and emotional growth your child is experiencing in just a short amount of time. Fundamental questions are floating around the heads of adolescents such as “who am I?” “Am I normal?” and “do I fit in?” Middle schoolers are thrust into a changing environment where adult involvement is reduced and their own skills become vital as they figure out exactly what they are going to allow to be their social and personal currency. Skills such as making good friend choices, negotiating conflict, considering other people's perspectives, cultivating their own passions and recognizing limitations and of course, making responsible, healthy, ethical choices. Yes, there is a lot to this middle school experience that bridges the gap between childhood and teenhood—and thankfully, we don't need to go it alone. Phyllis L. Fagell, LCPC, is the author of “Middle School Matters,” the counselor at Sheridan School in Washington, D.C., a psychotherapist at The Chrysalis Group and a frequent contributor to The Washington Post and other national publications. She is also a regular columnist for the Association for Middle Level Education and Kappan magazines, and she consults and speaks throughout the country. Phyllis graduated with honors from Dartmouth College, received a master's degree in journalism from the Medill School at Northwestern University, and earned her master's degree in counseling from Johns Hopkins University. While justifying his arrest and prolonged detention, the UP government had told Supreme Court that Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan had deep links with terror funding organisations like Popular Front of India and its student wing, Campus Front of India. The claim was denied by Kappan and his counsel. Popular Front of India, or PFI as it is known in common parlance, is an outfit which has been in the eye of storm since its formation. What is PFI? Created in 2007, PFI describes itself as the “organisation that fights for the rights of minorities, Dalits, and marginalised communities”. The decision to form the organisation was made on November 22, 2006, in Kozhikode, Kerala. And it is headquartered in New Delhi. PFI was founded after merging three Islamic organisations in southern India, the National Democratic Front, the Karnataka Forum for Dignity, and the Manitha Neethi Pasarai. The organisation does not contest elections but carries on social and religious work among Muslims. Another outfit, Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) emerged from PFI in 2009. It raises political issues for Muslims, Dalits, and other marginalised communities. PFI provides ground workers to SDPI. So why is PFI controversial? PFI has been repeatedly accused of riots, murders, and having links with terrorist organisations in the state. In 2012, then chief minister of Kerala Oommen Chandy told the High Court that PFI is “nothing but a resurrection of the banned outfit SIMI”. The Chandy government also filed an affidavit saying that PFI workers were involved in 27 murder cases. Most of those killed were from RSS and CPM. PFI vs RSS: A rivalry through the years But PFI workers are not the only ones accused of murders. The age-old rivalry between RSS and CPM has seen hundreds from both the sides losing their lives to violent attacks. PFI is the new entrant to this club. In April 2022, A Subair, PFI president of Elappully, was killed outside a mosque. The police said that the killer's vehicle was registered under the name of S Sanjith, a slain RSS worker. Sanjith was allegedly killed in November 2021, allegedly by the workers of PFI and SDPI. In April 2022, SK Sreenivasan, another RSS worker, was hacked to death in Palakkad. Abubakar Siddique, PFI secretary for Palakkad, was arrested in September on the charge of Sreenivasan's murder. Abubakr was also arrested in 2020 for inciting violence during the anti-CAA protests.
Roop Rekha Verma is former acting vice chancellor of Lucknow University, a professor of philosophy and a social activist. She made news earlier this week when she agreed to stand as surety for Siddique Kappan as a condition of his bail.Kappan, a journalist from Kerala, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police while he was on his way to report on the brutal gangrape of a teenage Dalit girl by four upper caste men in Hathras nearly two years ago. Kappan was slapped with charges under the sedition law and the anti-terror law UAPA. The journalist was granted bail by the Supreme Court on September 9, but his lawyers couldn't find residents of Uttar Pradesh who could stand as his surety, as required by the conditions of his bail. Until, that is, Verma came forward. She speaks with Tanishka Sodhi about her decision to help Kappan, the consequences for dissent in this country, and her life's journey. “In today's dark times, this much help is what every citizen has a claim of. I wouldn't have been able to face myself if I didn't extend this small help," she says. There's an climate of fear in the country right now, she says, because of which it is difficult for people to speak up and speak out. Verma, 79, has spent a lifetime fighting caste, gender and religious hatred, and she talks about what keeps her going. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

They discuss Nidhi's story on Siddique Kappan's bail hearing and the Uttar Pradesh government's affidavit arguing why he should stay in jail. “They have basically taken pamphlets found with Kappan during his arrest as the base for all this which are as normal as any other pamphlets you will find if you know what protests are about,” says Nidhi.Prateek talks about his report revealing that Delhi's lieutenant governor Vinai Saxena's daughter was brought in to design the First Khadi India Lounge facility when he was chairperson of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission between 2015 and 2022. “She said it was all on pro bono basis,” Prateek says, referring to Vinai's daughter Shivangi Saxena, “but the matter goes deep.”This and a lot more as they talk about what made news, what didn't, and what shouldn't have.Tune in.Contribute to our ongoing NL Sena project The Yogi Who Has it All.Timecodes00:00:00 - Introduction00:02:53 - Siddiqui Kappan's bail hearing00:10:30 - Delhi LG's ‘favour' for daughter00:38:50 - RecommendationsRecommendationsPrateekThirty years later, how a son helped nab his mother's rapistsNidhiSiddique Kappan ChargesheetThe Victim Who Became the AccusedAyushRed DustProduced and recorded by Tehreem Roshan, edited by Samrendra K Dash. For students and teachers, there is so much riding on the grades we give that stress comes with the routine grading process. This school year will be very unusual, with the potential to add more stress to the process of grading accurately and fairly. Join us for a discussion on how to reduce or remove grading stress during the school year ahead. Follow on Twitter: @ASCD @a_rebora @jonHarper70bd@ @bamradionetwork @JoeCFeldman #classroomstrategies Joe Feldman has worked in education for over 20 years as a teacher, principal, and district administrator, and is the founder and CEO of Crescendo Education Group (crescendoedgroup.org), which since 2013 has supported K-12 schools, districts, and colleges/universities nationwide to improve grading and assessment practices. In this episode, I was blessed to converse with a great hero of mine, Dr. Jim Knight. Dr. Knight is a senior research associate at Kansas University Center for Research on Learning and director of the Kansas Coaching Project. He has spent close to two decades studying professional learning and instructional coaching. He has written or co-authored several books on the topic including Instructional Coaching: A Partnership Approach to Improving Instruction published by Corwin and Learning Forward (2007) and Unmistakable Impact: A Partnership Approach for Dramatically Improving Instruction (2011). Knight co-authored Coaching Classroom Management (2006) and also edited Coaching: Approaches and Perspectives (2008). He also wrote one of my favorite books of all time: Better Conversations (2016). Knight has authored articles on instructional coaching and professional learning in publications such as The Journal of Staff Development, Educational Leadership, Principal Leadership, The School Administrator, and Kappan. While I was initially intimidated to converse with an expert in effective communication, Dr. Kight reminded me of the importance of grace and self-compassion as we all work to become better in all aspects of our humanity including our teaching, leadership, and parenting practices. In this episode, we dive into the issue of human motivation, effective feedback, teacher autonomy, effective coaching practices, and how we truly effectuate change but within ourselves and within organizational systems. As with all my guests, Jim was an absolute joy and I am thrilled and honored to share his infinite wisdom with you. With that, I bring you: Dr. Jim Knight. Despite extensive training and career preparation, roughly a quarter of all new teachers will leave their position after only a year. A significant contributor, according to researchers, is teacher stress. In a new article in Phi Delta Kappan Magazine, University of Texas at Austin researcher Christopher J. McCarthy details more than a decade of research into teacher stress, including the interplay between school resources, demands, coping resources, and job satisfaction. McCarthy joins CPRE Knowledge Hub managing editor Keith Heumiller to discuss his findings, his new Kappan article, and some key takeaways for those hoping to reduce or prevent teacher stress in their own schools. Read more about "Education in a Stressed Out Nation" in the November 2019 issue of Phi Delta Kappan Magazine.
She tweets @pfagell and blogs at www.phyllisfagell.com The post How to Talk to Middle Schoolers about What Matters Most with Phyllis Fagell, LCPC appeared first on drrobynsilverman.com.
For decades, research has documented notable and persistent gaps between advantaged and disadvantaged students. From funding to teacher quality to external school support, many of these gaps continue to pose complex challenges for schools, districts, and policymakers. Those issues drive the May 2019 issue of Phi Delta Kappan Magazine, and this week we partner with Kappan to discuss their causes, impacts, and potential solutions. Today we welcome Harvard University researcher Ebony Bridwell-Mitchell, whose new article explores how external school partnerships can perpetuate and even grow inequalities between advantaged and disadvantaged schools. She joins Rand Quinn, senior researcher with the Consortium for Policy Research in Education, to discuss her findings and their potential implications for school leaders, policymakers, and other stakeholders. To read more about educational resources and equity, pick up the May 2019 issue of Kappan Magazine or visit www.kappanonline.org.

In this episode I interview former Phi Delta Kappan Editor-in-Chief Joan Richardson. Joan is now in charge of polling for PDK and she has written an article on the 50-year history of the annual Kappan poll of U.S. attitudes toward public schools (http://pdkpoll.org/history). There is also a cool timeline compiling key findings from the last five decades of results, along with noteworthy events in the nation each year (http://pdkpoll.org/timeline). I had no idea about the origins of this annual poll, and I hope you find it as fascinating as I did. Joan has promised to come back on the show when the results of the current year's poll are released in September. Send your comments, questions, and show ideas to mike@schoolleadershipshow.com. Consider rating the podcast in iTunes and leaving a comment. And please pass the show along to your colleagues.
Dada, the Beats and the Hippies - what do they all have in common? The way they played was a problem for the authorities, for the people in power trying to instill black and white order on the world. This week on Playgrounding we’ll be talking to Shepherd Siegel, an educator and author whose work explores disruptive play and protest. We’ll explore the role of the trickster as passed down to us through mythology from many diverse cultures, then learn about cultural movements led by pranksters who laid the groundwork for some of the methods used to protest the Vietnam war. Shepherd is completing a book that will be launched this fall called Disruptive Play: The Trickster in Politics and Culture, about how play and the creative impulse could transform our society. In this episode, we’ll meet Shepherd and learn about the background behind his message. This fall, Shepherd will be back for a second interview where we’ll dive deeper into the book itself. I’ve had a sneak peek at the intro and first chapter. If they are any indication of what’s to come, you’re going to want to keep this book launch on your radar! Shepherd Siegel grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, in the midst of the Sixties counterculture. He was a professional rock and jazz musician who switched it out for his career as an educator (in music, career & technical and special education), earning his doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley. He has over thirty publications in the education field. Career Ladders, his internship program for high school students, is represented by over twenty school districts, a corresponding book, and an award from the US Department of Labor. From 1996-2012 he led the School to Career and Career + Technical Education (CTE) initiative for Seattle Public Schools. He joined Project Lead the Way in 2012 after having strong success with their STEM program in ten Seattle middle and high schools, until 2015. He is a Past President of the Washington Association for Career and Technical Education, serving from 2012-2015. He was the 2004 Outstanding Career and Technical Educator for the state of Washington, and a national finalist for the Association for Career and Technical Education 2005 Outstanding Career + Technical Educator. The KAPPAN published his article about a meaningful high school diploma in 2010. He has returned to his countercultural roots, currently writing a book, Disruptive Play: The Trickster in Politics and Culture, about how play and the creative impulse could transform our society.
