Fake news spreads further on X if the story is about the future

The more a fake news story talks about the future, the more likely it is to be spread on X (formerly Twitter), research from Trinity Business School has found - and this is linked to human evolution. The study, undertaken by Ashish Kumar Jha, an Associate Professor in Business Analytics at Trinity Business School, alongside Rohit Nishant from Queen's Business School, found that future-oriented fake news receives higher engagement in terms of retweets on X than other false news items. The paper, 'Judging a Book by its Cover: Understanding the Phenomenon of Fake News Propagation from an Evolutionary Psychology Perspective', has been published in the Journal of the Association for Information Systems. The paper, which examined the role of future-facing elements within fake news stories in supporting their proliferation on X, analysed data from 465,519 tweets, sourced via the FakeNewsNet project, and observed a clear relationship between the future-facing nature of the fake news story and how many users shared the item. Such fake news stories included: "WE WILL RIOT! Michelle Obama's Mom Will Receive $160k Every Year Out Of Taxpayers' Pockets!", which received considerable engagement, while "Donald Trump Protester Speaks Out: 'I was Paid $3500 to Protest Trump's Rally!'" received little engagement. "A plausible reason for the trend we see in our study is that these messages evoke a sense of uncertainty, which is a potent reason for sharing something; fake news with a strong past orientation may be used to discredit political leaders but, ultimately, these narratives don't elicit uncertainty," says Trinity Business School's Kumar Jha. The study sheds fresh light on a pervasive issue facing researchers, practitioners, and policymakers - the widespread consumption of false information, spread on social media platforms. Examining the role of future-facing narratives within some fake news stories, and the impact this messaging has on how quickly it spreads on X, the researchers also found that fake news stories were shared most when the title of the news story and the accompanying tweet 'moderately' differed in how they framed the future. "The study identifies a 'U-shaped' relationship between similarity of the messaging in the Tweet and fake news story title, and how much engagement that story gets. A moderate difference generated the most engagement, whereas the posts with the lowest user engagement were those with no difference in sentiments," Kumar Jha notes. Reflecting on the broader implications of the research, Trinity Business School's Dr. Jha says: "Our study found that we have evolved to react in certain way to certain information like future- oriented news. It is interesting to note how our evolution is impacting the way we react on social media platforms. But, more importantly, our study lays the ground form for responsible digital platforms and what social media platforms should do to limit the spread of fake news." The paper, Judging a Book by its Cover: Understanding the Phenomenon of Fake News Propagation from an Evolutionary Psychology Perspective, has been published in the Journal of the Association for Information Systems. Electric four-wheelers also promised to go down the same path because in that same year, there was a significant increase in sales of electric four-wheelers, 113%.Now, of course, this is from a lower base, but the signs were clear. The conventional wisdom or the narrative has been petrol and diesel cars are going to become a relic of the past. And if you're an automaker and if you're not investing billions of dollars in developing battery technology or newer models with all of this stuff, you are seen as out of touch with reality.Essentially, electric cars were inevitable. In 2024, something changed. Demand and sales for electric cars have fallen all over the world. For the first time in almost 12 years, Tesla's sales dropped by 1.1%. And India is also no exception. If you look at 2024 numbers, in fact, until October 2024, sales of electric four-wheeler cars in India were actually declining. They had gone down if you compare year-on-year numbers all of these months. By the end of the year, it sort of increased a little bit which was helped by a sale of one specific model called MG Windsor and some price cuts. But in this episode, we're going to pose two questions: Number one, why did electric cars become less attractive? Where do you place precious brain resources? The human brain's attention system is the success story of what makes us unique as human beings. Because attention fuels our ability to think, to feel, and connect, what we pay attention to is our life. For a long time, throughout our evolutionary history, the brain began to suffer from a very big problem which is that there's far more information out in the environment than could be fully processed. Attention ended up becoming a very useful solution because it allows us to prioritize information, but there are qualities of the human experience that disable attention. Given how powerful attention is, we need to really respect where we place this precious brain resource. The recent speech by Microsoft EVP, Experiences + Devices, Rajesh Jha, at the Barclays Global Technology Conference provided a glimpse into the company's strategic focus on generative AI. According to Jha, the last quarter has seen generative AI rise as a potentially revolutionary tech force which might outpace the magnitude of previous tech progress. Microsoft seems to be placing itself at the crest of this wave, if we infer from its concentration in this domain, and as evidenced by its launch of GPT-4. Spotting the application of generative AI in Microsoft's offerings, one cannot bypass the Microsoft 365 Copilot, which has been pivotal in heightening productivity and optimizing workflows across a diverse range of use scenarios. Spanning aid during meetings and information summarization to the enhancement of work output quality, the Copilot's value proposition has been mainly about labor reduction and total productivity enhancement. The ability of Microsoft to democratize AI, as they have stated, reflects in the effortless blend of AI capabilities into existing user experiences - a case in point being the Windows operating system. From a future perspective, Microsoft has plans to sustain its generative AI investments, aiming to stimulate user interfaces and experiences in line with the ongoing evolution of AI, focusing especially on natural language processing and multimodal interactions. Collaboration stands central to this strategy, particularly with partners and developers, to propel the Microsoft 365 Copilot's abilities and to stimulate innovation within a strong platform ecosystem. On the whole, these developments suggest a strong commitment from Microsoft Corporation to exploit AI augmentation's possibilities. These objectives show a harmonious intersection of generative AI and Microsoft's future vision, setting the scene for transformative progress in the years to come. This is of course based on claims made during the Barclays Global Technology Conference. We look forward to observing their progress. Meditation For Mountain Biking

BikeJames Podcast

In this podcast I wanted to share my experience with meditation for mountain biking. I've been meditating in some way since I was first introduced to it through a Tai Chi class I took in college and I've found it to be a powerful tool in helping me perform better. You can also read a summary article from the notes for the podcast below… Meditation is one of those words that elicits a pretty mixed reaction from people when you bring it up. Some people are totally into it, some people think it is a bunch of nonsense and some people think it might have some benefits but don't know what to do or where to start. For those of us who grew up in the 80's and 90's, it has undergone a bit of a cultural shift over the years. Seen for a long time as one of those things that hippies did that had no real world value, it has been studied and found to have a lot of benefits for health, mindset and performance. Meditation is something that I have been using in various ways since I was 19. I got introduced to it through a random Tai Chi class that I took during my first year of college along with some of the philosophy behind it. As I became a strength coach and started to study more about how the human body works and how to improve its performance I came across a lot of ways to train and harness the power of the mind. While sports psychology and meditation aren't the exact same thing, there are a lot of similarities and both have been used over time to train people to perform in high stress situations. Meditation has also been shown to help lower blood pressure, improve mood and lower stress. And while breathwork and meditation aren't the same thing, there are also a lot of crossover practices and, at its core, meditation is about using your breathing to help control the mind. For the 40+ year old mountain biker I think that having a meditation practice is as important as strength, cardio and skills training, meaning that if you need to cut back on something else to find time for it then it is worth it. As little as 12 minutes a day has been clinically shown to make a difference. My goal in this podcast is to give you a broad overview of meditation practices and some practical tips on how you can start using it as part of your training program. I use meditation in 2 ways - to train my attention and to visualize high stress situations I want to perform well in. The first thing I recommend you start with is using mediation to train your attention. With this method you want to find something to focus your attention on like your breathing, an object or a sound. I recommend using your breathing since it is also a great way to train your breathing and work in some breathwork. To do this you would get set up in a comfortable position - you can be sitting or lying down, just make sure that you are in a position you won't need to move to stay comfortable in. You don't have to but I recommend also closing your eyes to help you focus on your breathing. Set a tempo where your exhale is even with or slightly longer than your inhale.  I find that 4-6 and 5-5 breathing work well. Simply follow your breathing and count off the tempo in your head or using a timer. Feel your breath going into the belly and filling the lungs from the bottom to the top and then feel the breath reversing and being pushed out. If your mind wanders then just bring it back - this will happen and is part of the process. You could also focus on an object like a flame or you can focus on a sound/ mantra like “om”. What you will find is that it is tough at first to sit there and not have your mind wandering around and you will constantly be having to bring it back to your breathing (or other focal point). With practice this will happen less and your ability to recognize it and bring your attention back will be more automatic. You can create even more of a breathwork challenge by adding in pauses to the top and bottom of the breath, creating Triangle and Box Breathing patterns. This will also help to improve overbreathing and CO2 tolerance by purposefully breathing less than normal, which also creates a slight rise in CO2. On the trail this will help you to focus your mind when it matters the most and give you a way to use your breathing to help control anxiety in the moment. This can also help you with entering and staying in the flow state since outside thoughts and distractions are a hindrance to it. Another way to use meditation is to combine it with visualization. To do this you would want to start out with 5-10 minutes of regular meditation/ breathwork to help you enter into a calm and relaxed state of mind. Once you have done this you can start to visualize anxiety producing situations while focusing on staying calm and using your breathing to help you. If you start to lose control and feel yourself getting tense and anxious then stop the visualization and go back to focusing on your breathing and relaxing. For example, if you are nervous about competition you can visualize yourself getting ready for and going through the steps leading up to the start of the race (most athletes report the lead up to competition is actually more stressful that competing so I find that this is what you want to focus on). Another example would be if you have a trail or section of trail that is extremely challenging or if you have a new feature/ obstacle that you want to do. You can also extend this practice to things off of the bike like public speaking or having a difficult talk with your boss or wife/ husband. As you can see, meditation is an extremely valuable tool for us both on and off the bike. It isn't complicated and it doesn't have to take a lot of time for you to see results. Some good books to check out on this subject are Peak Mind by Amishi P. Jha and Psyche by Jud Biasiotti.  Another great book on the training mindset is The Book of Five Rings by Myamoto Musashi. In it he talks a lot about the need to combine meditation with physical training in order to reach your goals. Meditation is something that people have been using for thousands of years and with modern science we have some answers as to how it works. But it is still something that you have to make time for and do. I promise you, though, that the effort is well worth it. If you are interested in learning more about how to use breathwork and how to get the most out of your meditation practice then check out my Guide To Better Breathing for MTB. In it you'll learn how to assess your breathing and ways you can improve it, along with practical tips on how to use better breathing on the trail to improve your cardio along with how to use it to help you prepare for competition. I hope this podcast has inspired you to start your own breathing/ meditation practice, let me know if you have any questions I can help with. Until next time… Ride Strong, James Wilson

Plus: listen to the end to hear a little history about Dr. Jha and Dr. Sharfstein.

Dr. Ashish Jha, the former White House COVID Coordinator, says he expects vaccines updated for this fall will provide a “great deal of protection” but he acknowledges there are questions about whether a young person should get the booster. “My best read of the literature is that, yes, they should [get the COVID booster shot]. A reasonable person could read the literature and say, ‘I don't know if that's true and let's have that debate.'” Dr. Jha says, unfortunately, that discussion is clouded by what he calls “nonsense and bad information” that causes confusion and ends up harming people. The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are expected to soon approve the new shots. THE THESIS: Pharma is more powerful than the ballot box, the media and so-called presidents. The question is: WHY? It can't just be money. THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: Proverbs 6:16-19 There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.Psalm 21:11Though they plot evil against you and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed.2 Corinthians 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.THE NEWS & COMMENT:Many hospitals are lying about the availability of blood not-tainted by Pfizer and Moderna's mRNA clot-shots. While this little baby had serious health issues and the mRNA may not be the ultimate reason he developed blood clots, there was simply no patient-centered reason to force mRNA-infected blood--known to cause sometimes massiver, fibrous, growth in veins and arteries into him. Why does Pharma have so much control? Baby dies of large blood clot after doctor ignores parents' request for unvaxxed transfusion; Cornelia Hertzler said doctors discovered a blood clot in her infant son ‘within a few hours after' a transfusion of blood from a general blood bank. With very few exceptions, Republicans are also run by Pharma. Here Are The Republicans Who Voted Against Reinstating Troops Who Refused The VaccineHere is the Figurehead's Twitter account pretending he cares about the troops even as they STILL try to force them to get injected. No, it doesn't work. Why are we playing this lady to read lies on behalf of Big Pharma from her book of lies? [AUDIO] - WH Press Sec.: People "need to get the new vaccine, it's important, we know it works."This is but one example of what these lies have caused:Celine Dion was disabled from a KNOWN SIDE EFFECT of the COVID vaccine (99.6% certainty)US government data shows it is 99.6% likely that Celine Dion got her Stiff Person Syndrome from the COVID vaccine. She can't sue because of the liability protection. . . and still, people like “Doctor” Jha speak them; like Fauci, lies are Jha's native tongue.[AUDIO] - White House covid response coordinator Dr. Jha: "We know we can prevent nearly every death from covid if people get their updated vaccines."It's very likely the mRNA killed this man, who was a big, mental victim of Pharma and the Sexual Left.On the sudden death of Grant Wahl and the fury and hypocrisy of vaccine advocates; We will probably never know the underlying cause of the aneurysm that killed him - and the media and public health bureaucrats would rather we do not ask at all.Why is the Country of Israel allowing their “Health” “Ministry” to pretend they lost their contract with Pfizer? Israeli government "lost the agreement" with Pfizer for Covid “vaccines” - the pandemic of lost data and lost contracts is truly going GlobalLet's count the ridiculous lies being mouthed on behalf of Pfizer and Moderna . . .Oh, by the way . . . [AUDIO] - Kim Dotcom: Watch this and have your mind blown. Whoever wrote the script for this episode of X-Files has to be a time traveler or a senior deep state operative who revealed the entire plan just for giggles

THE THESIS: If China stopped making drugs for America, this Nation would collapse in a Month or two. THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: Sometimes, God does not remove the thorn, He gives us His Grace and reminds us it is enough. That is so difficult when the pain is intense and so edifying when we learn to let God's Grace work. What Was Paul's Thorn in the Flesh? (2 Corinthians 12)THE NEWS & COMMENT:I fully believe Tony Fauci is a psychopath or sociopath, I know he is a spiritual captive. So much evil has been done through him. Now, the man who never once said in his thousands of TV interviews he had memory issues suddenly says he can't remember much . . . Fauci Could Not Recall Key Details During Deposition: Louisiana Attorney General. . . when he pretended his didn't pay attention to the Great Barrington Declaration, he was obviously lying under oath, but he's a career liar and left wiggle room he can slither through. How do I know he lied? Because he used our money to try to ruin the doctors and scientists who founded The Great Barrington Declaration. What does that say about who owns America?Speaking of our money:Biden's National Science Foundation Has Pumped Nearly $40 Million Into Social Media Censorship Grants and Contracts. . . The Party that gave your money to Big Pharma to make the mRNA clot shots, then spent at least $40 million to make sure Pharma got to lie with few challenges. Even as he retires in his blood money, Fauci keep letting himself be used for lies:[AUDIO] - Fauci: "When we're gathering at a family gathering for Thanksgiving, it makes sense that you might want to get a test before you come into a place where you could be infected and spread it."Who owns America? Is it the same groups that own Canada?[AUDIO] - “Unvaccinated patients have a mental problem and should be put on psychiatric medications.”PhD's in math, data analysis, systems analysis, people demonstrably gifted by God with intelligence to discern truth from lies are, to “doctor” Jha “random dudes on Twitter.” For whom is he speaking? [AUDIO] - “Dr”. Jha: "The real leaders of American medicine are out there telling you that you need to go get a vaccine. You can decide to trust America's physicians or you can trust some random dude on Twitter."I pray God will reveal to President Trump the truth about these injections. [AUDIO] - Trump STILL defends Big Pharma and the so-called Covid “vaccines …”This woman pretends lockdowns and masking just happened, no one is to blame. She also makes believe Mike Pompeo called all teachers filth. This is the same woman whose colleagues are installing Pharma outlets in schools. Who owns America?[AUDIO] - Boss/Head Capo of teacher's union Randi Weingarten: Teachers “have been dealing with all the anxieties & the aftershocks & aftereffects of Covid for children, including the mental health crises.”Who owns America? Well, what would happen if China, which makes most of these addictive drugs decided to stop?Steve writes:Hi Todd,I'm a long time radio fan who was very disappointed when they talked you into the FM Show. I want to disagree with you on something because I think you are falling for the Big Pharm's hype on it and not understanding how it actually works. I'm talking about the whole Serotonin controversy. When I became clinically depressed I actually didn't believe it was a real thing. I really thought it was most likely a bunch of whiners making excuses for never getting off of their backsides and doing anything. Not terribly compassionate on my part but I got my comeuppance. I started feeling down all of the time and became almost completely unable to sleep so I naturally turned to alcohol as a sleep aid. Two years of that took away my ability to stop drinking, so I had to quit that entirely which just left me not sleeping and feeling even worse. I went to a counselor and very sheepishly said that I might be kinda sorta possibly maybe a little depressed. He agreed and we had six months of therapy that hadn't budged my mood a half inch before he sent me to a psychiatrist for some “real help” as he called it. The white-haired veteran shrink that he sent me to was fabulous. He asked great questions and listened intently and we started on some medication. He told me right up front that prescribing anti-depressants is “pseudoscience” because there are no tests that will tell us what will help, only trial and error informed by his years of experience. You ramp up on each one slowly, and if it doesn't work you ramp back down and do it again with another one. It takes patience. What I think you're missing is that to this day I have no idea if serotonin had anything at all to do with the cause of my depression, but I do know that boosting it up had a lot to do with making it possible for me to live with it while I continued the “talk therapy” that was actually working on the root causes. It took eight years before I started to emerge from the fog, and I seriously doubt I would have let it go on anywhere near that long without the boost I got from the two anti-depressants that I ended up taking. Over the years we tried at least ten, but we didn't stick with most of them because there wasn't any significant benefit. Thanks to my years in sobriety groups I know lots of people who have experienced severe depression and I don't know a single one who would ever use the word “cure” in connection with any medication. They don't cure anything, they just lessen the worst of the horrible feelings so that you can tolerate them while you do the really long term part and get some help figuring out what part of your life is triggering the issue. I never became suicidal, and I don't believe in suicide at all, but I did worry about it because I could foresee that at some point the depression and insomnia would very likely break me.When you respond to the hype that drugs can cure depression, you're really falling for the marketing campaign. Also don't ever let anyone you know get meds from their general practitioner. There are hundreds of different, very narrowly focused medications with subtle differences and your average GP has experience with maybe a half dozen that he gives out like chiclets to any patient that might be somewhat depressed. You don't trust your GP to do brain surgery and you absolutely don't go to him for depression. “Ask your doctor about Symbalta” is pure marketing and nothing else. I'm sure it boosts sales right through the roof as a bunch of people in need of a subtle and accurate touch get something that they don't need prescribed by someone who really doesn't have any idea what they are doing.I do believe that there is an organic component of serious depression, something drops below the point where you have the ability to snap yourself out of it. You might ask if I ever prayed to be cured of it, and the answer to that would be no. The insidious part of depression is that there is nothing a depressed person likes to do more than review the times they have failed to live up to their own standards. The simple fact is that when we're in it we believe we deserve all of the misery. So, while I don't disagree that they are over-prescribed and very often mis-prescribed, I think you do a grave disservice to a lot of folks when you completely dismiss them.
