Slowjamastan, officially dubbed "The United Territories of the Sovereign Nation of the People's Republic of Slowjamastan," was founded on December 1, 2021, by Randy "R Dub!" Williams, a San Diego-based radio DJ famous for hosting Sunday Night Slow Jams, a syndicated show spinning smooth R&B tracks. The "slow jams" theme is the micronation's quirky backbone—think Luther Vandross and Anita Baker as its spiritual soundtrack. Williams, who's styled himself the "Sultan of Slowjamastan," bought an 11.07-acre plot of empty desert land along California State Route 78 for $19,000 in October 2021, inspired by a visit to another micronation, Molossia, in Nevada. His goal? Create a playful, rule-breaking alternative to the everyday grind.This isn't just a patch of sand with a flag (though it has one—plus a border sign, a "customs" post, and an open-air desk for the Sultan). Slowjamastan mimics real nations with its own currency (the "duble," pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar), passports (featuring hip-hop quotes), and a national anthem, "Slowjamastan (I Think It's Gonna Be an Awesome Place)," penned by Williams himself. The population? Zero residents on-site, but over 19,000 "citizens" worldwide as of mid-2024.

My guest this Saturday has created the newest and most exciting micronation where slow jams rule and please leave those nasty Croc shoes at the door! Ladies and gentleman, I bring you His Excellency, Randy “R Dub!” Williams, Sultan of Slowjamastan. When he's not ruling over the world's newest nation, our Dear Leader hosts an internationally syndicated radio show called Sunday Night Slow Jams, currently heard on over 200 radio stations across America. The show airs in major markets from New York City to San Francisco – from Chicago to Phoenix, and in many big cities and small towns in-between.  You should listen!Our Sultan has been a full-time radio host since the tender age of 16. Today, he spends most of his time outside of Slowjamastan, about 70 miles away, where he works at San Diego radio stations Magic 92.5 and Z90. (His Excellency hosts the afternoon show on Magic 92.5). But if you can't find him there either, chances are he's fled the continent: Randy's mission in life (besides building this rad new nation) is to visit every country in the world – all 193 of them. He finished this mission on May of 2023, when he arrived in Turkmenistan.The Sultan has written two books, produced a feature-length, award-winning film and has appeared on an episode of Judge Mathis (where he was victorious) and ABC‘s Shark Tank.
