Nathan Allebach began managing the Twitter account for Steak-umm, the food brand, in 2017. It had 1,000 followers. It's now over 200,000. He speaks with host Eric Bandholz in this week's episode, addressing social media branding, divisive content, and more.
In a way, we're all managing our personal brand in the infosphere aren't we? But Nathan Allebach, in a far more tangible way, really does manage brands - not just his own, but also for companies. And in managing the Steak-Umm brand on twitter, he drew attention by being one of the first to adopt a personal, authentic, and informative style - covering topics far beyond the world of frozen processed steak. Far from providing the typical zero-calorie bland corporate platitudes, Nathan quickly drew attention by delivering substantial threads on weighty topics like conspiracism and online disinformation. He played a delicate game of being edgy without being snarky or combative, providing informative and positive intellectual fare, nourishing both the hearts and minds of twitter users everywhere. As a hardened and savvy longtime twitter user, he's got a good understanding of the weirdness of Being Online, and the various ways to do so. So, we were glad to have a chance to meat Nathan (virtually of course, not in the flesh), to get his insights on navigating the online world, on what it means to See and Be Seen there, and his personal approach to Doing It Right. He didn't share any Convenient Meat Recipes For Busy Professionals though, weirdly enough... Maybe we'll have to get him back for that. Today's episode is about the Republican/Fox News effort to re-open the states before they're ready -- Georgia and South Carolina particularly come to mind, but there are fake protests nationwide pushing governors to re-open, and Republican governors are falling for it. And it's dangerous. So we talk a lot about that, why the GOP seems so hell-bent on getting their own voters killed, and we wrap up with an interesting discussion about Steak-Umm becoming the voice of the resistance. This is one of our free episodes, and the first as a new proud member of the Sexy Liberal Podcast Network. I think many, if not most people, right now are looking to their skills to see how they can be turned to assist in this weird, hard, and bad times. But what if your main asset is that you're the social media manager for Steak Umm brand frozen meat slices?
Instead of trying to find answers or get facts, people are numbing out and scrolling. Sending DMs on Facebook. The world is literally spending a record amount of time on social media. Meanwhile, very few people are even questioning the government or whoever is behind the draconian response as Americans are forced to stay home. No one can leave their house and the government is even asking people to report fellow citizens for breaking the "rules." It sounds like a science fiction movie. Is anyone questioning what's happening? Today on the Spiritual Spiral, I continue to examine the dystopian world I see around me. When I go to Whole Foods, not only do I see people wearing masks, but I see people filled with fear, terrified to walk within six feet of one another and if anyone coughs or sneezes, the immediate thought is, "GET ME OUT OF HERE!" People are so caught up with the rolling count of Covid -19 deaths that no one is thinking about the financial, sociological or psychological impact of being forced to stay home. I also share thoughts on Steak Umm's Twitter Feed, the disconnection created from DMs and I talk about a fantastic article by David Brooks in the New York Times where he discusses the psychological impact created by social distancing. Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross grind Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee to a pulp. Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee is a puzzle platformer that was revered in its time for its beautiful graphics, excellent sound, and abundant character. Unfortunately, its trial-and-error nature hasn’t aged well. This is possibly the most negative we’ve ever gotten about a game.
