A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool

From 1997 to 1999, the gaming industry underwent a series of significant transformations that redefined its landscape. In 1997, as 3D gaming continued to revolutionize the industry, Sony's PlayStation emerged dominant, but it wasn't without challenges, as both Nintendo and Sega grappled with changing dynamics. A notable highlight was the intriguing saga of "Duke Nukem Forever" and its impact on the perception of game development. By 1998, the gaming world celebrated a milestone as it was recognized as a bona fide art form, with awards honoring its creative achievements. This was juxtaposed with controversies surrounding violent game content, even as Sega's Dreamcast ushered in the sixth console generation with its cutting-edge features. The year 1999 witnessed the meteoric rise of indie developers and the massive success of Pokemon, a phenomenon that transcended the gaming sphere. Additionally, Hollywood's foray into gaming, exemplified by Stephen Spielberg's "Medal of Honor", signaled a major shift, while legal battles like Sony Corporation v. Bleem LLC emphasized the importance of intellectual property and sparked debates on emulation.Featured Games:Final Fantasy VII, Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, GoldenEye 007, The Curse of Monkey Island, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Age of Empires, Ultima Online, Sonic Jam, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Half-Life, Unreal, Pokemon Red and Blue, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Super Smash Bros, StarCraft, System Shock 2, Age of Empires II, and RollerCoaster Tycoon. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ (00:00) - Episode 5 (00:06) - 1997 (30:19) - 1998 (46:55) - 1999 Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

It's impossible to talk about Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and its bigger, bulkier sequel Abe's Exoddus without talking about farting. Okay, that's not true, but we do talk about farting in this episode, because we want to, dammit! I, Stuart Gipp, am joined by the prestigious John Linneman of Digital Foundry, and the persuasive RJ Lake of D-Cell Games, in this first discussion of Lorne Lanning's moneyhatted magnum opus, Oddworld! It's too big a subject for just one episode, but here we get into the nitty-gritty of the first two games in the planned quadrilogy, these 2D stealth-action-atmosphere pieces that resonated with almost everybody who played them. Except for the prudes who found the act of passing gas to be either childish or abhorrent. Still! Join us as we try to rescue all the Mudokons from their terrible fate, but end up dropping them down trap doors for a laugh. Hello. Follow me. Straight into those meat saws. I don't think I've ever ragequit/returned/ragequit/returned a video game as many times as I did Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. This game is clever, very easy on the eyes, creative as fuck, and TOUGH AS NAILS. The controls are weird, the checkpoints suck, and your margin for error is practically non-existent. I spent the entire playthrough getting angry. But when I finally finished the game, I wanted to go back and play it again. This game is so fucked.   One of our listeners by the online handle of 'Blaine the Hoagie Man' sponsored this episode, tolerated my repeated ragequitting, and managed to convince me that Oddworld belongs up there with Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, and Resident Evil as one of the defining games in the original PlayStation's library. He swung by the show this week to explain why he thought I'd enjoy this game, and why it didn't break him back in the 90's.    And after I chat with Blaine, I give my buddy Tyler a call to break down the good, the bad, and the odd that makes up Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee.    And before we talk farts and stuff, I toss together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'!   This week, we talked about whether or not mobile gaming is a threat to handhelds like the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck. How do I determine the value of a game when I think about buying it? And what's the best retro compilation available on modern consoles these days?   Plus we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 games that contain farts (yes, seriously): Conker's Bad Fur Day, Fable, and Boogeyman.   Are you on social media? Of course you are.

Anyone worth their salt whose ever picked up a controller in the 90's should be well aware of the character known as Abe.For those who do not, here's a quick lesson... In the 90's there was an odd creature known as Abe. His pals worked in a factory, a factory that made meat products...meat products made of Abe's pals!  So he had to save 'em.Abe and his entire world... an " Oddworld ", was the creation of this week's guest Lorne Lanning. In the 90's we had never seen a game as smart, as beautiful or as cinematic as OddWorld: Abe's Oddysee which was followed by Abe's Exoddus. We really enjoyed talking with Lorne for the 2 hrs you're about to hear! We delve into his early years, being an artists, being in trouble, working on The Reagan Star Wars projects, working in VFX and eventually landing in games where he continues to make waves. And of course we talk about the new Oddworld game coming July 22nd 2014 Oddworld: New N' Tasty ENJOY!

Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross grind Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee to a pulp. Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee is a puzzle platformer that was revered in its time for its beautiful graphics, excellent sound, and abundant character. Unfortunately, its trial-and-error nature hasn’t aged well. This is possibly the most negative we’ve ever gotten about a game.
