Nathan Churney and Joshua Mullinax know how to get the Aqua Teens moving like none other... literally! Today we're joined by these critical ATHF animators who sacrificed everything (and then some!) to create the brilliant show we love today. Well maybe not everything, but they definitely worked their asses off, ya dig? Having touched damn near every bit of ATHF content from S02E01's Super Birthday Snake all the way thru S12E05's Anubis, these fellas are sharing their 20 years of Aqua Teen experience right here, right now... or whenever you listen to this. We'll wait. We're getting into the impact Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis had on the animation process, Nate and Josh's experience writing on an episode of Aqua Teen, and how great season 3 of Twin Peaks is.   • Nathan Churney's 2017 Demo Reel: https://vimeo.com/233084780 • Joshua Mullinax's site: http://joshuamullinax.com/ ♫ Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Celebrate Your Mother: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20CCTpU_Mdg&ab_channel=migzav ♫ Caroline Polachek - Welcome To My Island: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxgcz_6GKX0&ab_channel=CarolinePolachek ♫ Refused - New Noise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkAe30aEG5c&ab_channel=EpitaphRecords ♫ Ice Choir - Designs in Rhythm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKDBNrwR3_o&ab_channel=IceChoir   ★ Support The Show + Get Extra Episodes • Patreon: patreon.com/dancingisforbidden   ★ Amazon Affiliate Links - Support The Podcast At No Extra Cost! • Aqua Teen Forever Plantasm 4K: https://amzn.to/3Svy2ea • Aqua Teen Forever Plantasm BluRay: https://amzn.to/3dLcKKS • Aqua Teen Forever Plantasm Digital: https://amzn.to/3t8cqtv • Baffler Meal 20 Disc DVD Box Set: https://amzn.to/3fmznWf   Timestamps: (hey I made some edits to the episode after writing these out so they won't be exact, I'll fix 'em when I can. Up until this day, her work explores many themes, which are still very relevant to this day; mostly digital cultures, self-organisation through new technologies and data as a tool that can be utilised to both positive and negative effects.

Well ladies and germs, the day hath cometh. We are officially at our 200th episode, and like any great time-based achievement, we relish in our past while reflecting on our increasingly deflating future. So to celebrate, we go full Ranch Dressing Studios energy and discuss a bunch of semi-related Internet things, eventually landing on a concept we've been thinking a lot about called the Dead Internet Theory, which basically suggests that all of us are constantly manipulated by bots, none of us really have control over our own thoughts, and the Internet is tool of mass-control that we've all bought into. It's a sick theory that's probably not true, but also maybe it is. And because of all this, we've decided to take a hiatus too. We're all super busy, so we want to just think a bit about how we're going to do the next 200, and the 200 after that, and 200 after that. Maybe we won't come back. Maybe we will come back super soon. Maybe we'll option off the podcast to the Marvel universe. Either way, it's been a good ride. Internet art is a broad term for the work of artists who use the internet as their canvas. Think of Flash animation, psychedelic glitch art, computer-generated art, GIFs, and many other examples. The internet has been around for five decades now, and internet art is falling victim to broken links, expired domains, and unsupported file types."I believe we're in a crisis right now, where so much work is disappearing and will never be seen again. We want to be in communication with these artists while they're still with us,” said Casey Reas, co-founder of the UCLA Arts Conditional Studio with Lauren Lee McCarthy and Chandler McWilliams, all professors in the Department of Design Media Arts. The UCLA Arts Conditional Studio is launching an initiative to collect internet art made by LA-based artists and preserve it for future generations. “Art and the Internet in LA 1969+” will explore the history of artists in Los Angeles who have worked with, responded to, and transformed the internet.Their beginning point is November 21, 1969, when UCLA professor Leonard Kleinrock established the first permanent ARPANET link from his laboratory to Stanford University. It continues through the emergence of the World Wide Web to the ubiquitous influence of the internet today.

As an artist, academic, and a cofounder to an art technology company called Monograph, Kevin McCoy brings a unique perspective to the idea of authorship & ownership in its application to the digital and internet art scene. Established in 2014, Monegraph aimed to solve issues of provenance and legitimacy artists and collectors face when selling and buying digital art works. In this episode, we speak with Kevin about how Monegraph was received in its initial years, why provenance matters in the art world, and what some of the hurdles are facing digital and new media artists today.-About Kevin McCoy-His artworks take many diverse forms including video sculpture and installation, photography, long-form film, curatorial practice and performance, kinetic sculpture and software-driven on-line projects. Thematically, his work explores changing conditions around social roles, categories, genres and forms of value. His primary research questions ask 'What counts as new,’ 'How is meaning established,' and 'How are cultural memories formed'. He has worked collaboratively with Jennifer McCoy for many years to try to answer what it means to speak together, often finding that experience outstrips available modes of presentation and discourse. To these ends their work has adopted many methodological approaches: exhaustive categorization, recreation and reenactment, automation, miniaturization, and most recently remote viewing and speculative modeling. In New York City, his work has been exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, P.S.1, Postmasters Gallery, The Museum of Modern Art, The New Museum, and Smack Mellon. International exhibitions include projects at the Pompidou Center, the British Film Institute, ZKM, the Hanover Kunstverien, the Bonn Kunstverein, and F.A.C.T. (Liverpool, UK). Grants include a 2002 Creative Capital Grant for Emerging Fields, a 2005 Wired Rave Award, and a 2011 Guggenheim Fellowship. Articles about his work have appeared in Art in America, Artforum, Flash Art, Art News, The New York Times, The Washington Post and Newsweek. Residencies include work at the Headlands Center for the Arts, and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. His artwork is represented by in New York by Postmasters Gallery and in Geneva by Gallerie Guy Bartschi and can be seen in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and MUDAM in Luxembourg. In 2014 he co-founded monegraph.com a platform that uses the technology underlying Bitcoin to provide a mechanism for validating, owning and trading digital media assets. The project was presented at The New Museum as part of Rhizome's seven on seven conference and at Tech Crunch Disrupt in New York. His teaching engages both undergraduate and graduate students in studio art and related arts professions and addresses practical and theoretical uses of digital media technology together with surveys of related theoretical and philosophical texts. In an age where we are inundated by a seemingly endless scroll of images and living within an economy that demands an inordinate amount of our attention, it feels necessary to ask what is the value of doing nothing? It is much more evident now than ever before that social media platforms are another tool for advertisers and corporations to learn our desires through likes and clicks encouraging us to stay glued to our screens and monitors. In 2017, Bay Area-based artist Jenny Odell gave a talk at the annual EYEO festival titled “How to do Nothing,” which resulted in a book of the same name. I have been following Odell’s artistic practice and writing since she was in graduate student pursuing her MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute. With a background in literature and having taught Internet Art at Stanford University for several years, her wealth of knowledge related to networked culture to free things advertised on Instagram that aren’t actually free, she has an uncanny ability to craft a stories emblematic of our digital age. In this episode, The Value of Doing Nothing, I spoke with Odell about exercises in attention, space for refusal, bonding over our experience of an Ellsworth Kelly painting at the SF MOMA, and much more. The irony of Odell’s call to action, being that of doing nothing, leads us to the multitude of ways that stepping back from time to time enables and affords us the opportunity to learn how to observe the world around us, actively listen, and fastidiously mind the details we might normally overlook. -- Subscribe to Art Practical on iTunes to catch PRNT SCRN as soon as it publishes!
