On this week's Chat Log, Mollie and Lauren devised a little library based on all the ways you can sort your Steam library. Can we identify a game based on its file size? Can we deduce which games we added to our Steam libraries first all the way back in the 2010s? Play along with our little multiple choice quiz and maybe post a little question of your own. Or just tidy up your own backlog a bit.

On today's IGN The Fix: Games, FromSoftware has made playing Elden Ring in co-op much easier than in its previous games - and easier than the previous network test made it seem. Elden Ring features a system broadly similar to Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, and Bloodborne, in that you must first use a consumable item to open your world up and allow co-op allies to visit you. However, rather than demanding a semi-rare item that you must scour the world for, Elden Ring uses an item that can be crafted from incredibly common materials. Valve has released a new tool that will let you see exactly which games from your Steam Library will be compatible with the Steam Deck. Those interested in seeing which games Valve's upcoming handheld gaming PC will be able to run can head over to the Steam Deck Compatibility page and log in with their Steam account to see if their Steam Library games are Deck Verified, Deck Playable, Unsupported, or Untested. Narz has all that in your Daily Fix!
Microsoft promises to treat everyone fair when it comes to their platforms, Goldeneye seems like its just around the corner. Check your Steam Library for Steam Deck compatibility, Or Print your own Steam Deck with official files. Sony Censors Marth is Dead, and Lost Ark is REALLY popular.
As Valve starts verifying games in the Steam Library, we can use SteamDB to look at our libraries and start to get an idea on which of our games may work on the Steam Deck. Of course we discuss a million other things on the latest episode of On Deck!
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Fun with +12 OOMs of Compute, published by Daniel Kokotajlo on the LessWrong. Crossposted from the AI Alignment Forum. May contain more technical jargon than usual. Or: Big Timelines Crux Operationalized What fun things could one build with +12 orders of magnitude of compute? By ‘fun' I mean ‘powerful.' This hypothetical is highly relevant to AI timelines, for reasons I'll explain later. Summary (Spoilers): I describe a hypothetical scenario that concretizes the question “what could be built with 2020's algorithms/ideas/etc. but a trillion times more compute?” Then I give some answers to that question. Then I ask: How likely is it that some sort of TAI would happen in this scenario? This second question is a useful operationalization of the (IMO) most important, most-commonly-discussed timelines crux: “Can we get TAI just by throwing more compute at the problem?” I consider this operationalization to be the main contribution of this post; it directly plugs into Ajeya's timelines model and is quantitatively more cruxy than anything else I know of. The secondary contribution of this post is my set of answers to the first question: They serve as intuition pumps for my answer to the second, which strongly supports my views on timelines. The hypothetical In 2016 the Compute Fairy visits Earth and bestows a blessing: Computers are magically 12 orders of magnitude faster! Over the next five years, what happens? The Deep Learning AI Boom still happens, only much crazier: Instead of making AlphaStar for 10^23 floating point operations, DeepMind makes something for 10^35. Instead of making GPT-3 for 10^23 FLOPs, OpenAI makes something for 10^35. Instead of industry and academia making a cornucopia of things for 10^20 FLOPs or so, they make a cornucopia of things for 10^32 FLOPs or so. When random grad students and hackers spin up neural nets on their laptops, they have a trillion times more compute to work with. [EDIT: Also assume magic +12 OOMs of memory, bandwidth, etc. All the ingredients of compute.] For context on how big a deal +12 OOMs is, consider the graph below, from ARK. It's measuring petaflop-days, which are about 10^20 FLOP each. So 10^35 FLOP is 1e+15 on this graph. GPT-3 and AlphaStar are not on this graph, but if they were they would be in the very top-right corner. Question One: In this hypothetical, what sorts of things could AI projects build? I encourage you to stop reading, set a five-minute timer, and think about fun things that could be built in this scenario. I'd love it if you wrote up your answers in the comments! My tentative answers: Below are my answers, listed in rough order of how ‘fun' they seem to me. I'm not an AI scientist so I expect my answers to overestimate what could be done in some ways, and underestimate in other ways. Imagine that each entry is the best version of itself, since it is built by experts (who have experience with smaller-scale versions) rather than by me. OmegaStar: In our timeline, it cost about 10^23 FLOP to train AlphaStar. (OpenAI Five, which is in some ways more impressive, took less!) Let's make OmegaStar like AlphaStar only +7 OOMs bigger: the size of a human brain.[1] [EDIT: You may be surprised to learn, as I was, that AlphaStar has about 10% as many parameters as a honeybee has synapses! Playing against it is like playing against a tiny game-playing insect.] Larger models seem to take less data to reach the same level of performance, so it would probably take at most 10^30 FLOP to reach the same level of Starcraft performance as AlphaStar, and indeed we should expect it to be qualitatively better.[2] So let's do that, but also train it on lots of other games too.[3] There are 30,000 games in the Steam Library. We train OmegaStar long enough that it has as much time on each game as AlphaStar had on Starcraft. Wi...

With a brain so big, maybe it'll start to do some transfer learning, acquiring g...
After each game is reviewed, it is categorized for its level of compatibility of Steam Deck. You'll see these categories on Steam, when you're browsing your library or shopping for games on Deck.
In this week's show, Justin, Shawn, and Andy are all back on this show and talk about El Gato Stream Deck. Andy was looking for a product to feature for the Tech Segment for KMSB Fox 11 and looked at the Stream Deck XL. Justin has been using one and goes over some of the features of the Stream Deck including Folder nesting and easier assigning hot keys for not only streaming but also gaming. Shawn has been using the ATEM Mini from Black Magic Design and how the product has been an answer to many video programs that are used in Houses of Worship. Shawn shares that the Stream Desk could be used to work in hand with the ATEM Mini for ease of use. Andy talks about running into Alicia at Best Buy and how she was handling Marketing and looking for a Solution for recording audio to go with great looking video. Shawn recommends great Audio for a reasonable price with the Yeti Nano and the Rode NT USB Microphone. Andy loves the Rodecaster which is a Production Studio in a box. There was some confusion with an announcement this week with a product from Valve, The Steam Deck. The product is a Handheld gaming unit, like the Nintendo Switch, with a 7' Screen and many other great features. The Steam Deck can play the game titles in their Steam Library and non-limited as the Nintendo Switch is to only Nintendo titles. Justin gives us the rundown on the Valve Steam Deck. Justin shares his story of ordering one and thinking it was not going to go through, it did. Now we have to setup a GoFundMe for his Purchase! The Steam Deck is set for release in December. The guys talk about hoarders that are buying up technology with bots making purchases and then reselling them. The Question is poised, how could this be circumvented, and Shawn believes more Brick-and-Mortar Sales could be one solution with set times and pre orders from the authorized retailers based on pre orders from the store which would have to be picked up in person. A Chip Shortage is causing even new aircraft to not be able to have Wi-Fi due to the Shortage. The Shortage has caused the increase in sale of Used Vehicles. Andy talks about the upcoming Windows365, a Cloud based version of the Windows Operating System and the cost and wonders who would do this? The guys talk about the alternatives. Microsoft Windows365 should be available August 2nd. Shawn talks about a recent test in Japan that produced 319Tbps which could essentially allow 7000 HD Movies to be downloaded in seconds. Obviously, the bottlenecks would not make this viable, but the thought puts a smile on our faces! The guys talk about the cost of High-Speed Internet as it is now. Justin shares info on his New Synology DS920+ NAS and why he loves it! He installed the Virtual Machine Manager and talks about the Linux Distributions he is using. Shawn tells us about his JBOD NAS system. Shawn shares some great info from Wyze, Multicolored LED Strips! We have been hoping and lobbying for them to make Christmas lights and these are pretty darn close so far. Connect with Us on social media! Nothing much new this episode, but Rob did get a free copy of Ghost Recon: Wildlands with his shiny new microphone (which he utterly failed at recording this month's particular shambles of an episode with) and Iain's been playing it too, so we go on at some length about that. Also: Marcus played something called Gang Beasts and Rob managed to get through the entirery of Alien: Isolation - which is something of an achievement given how long that game has been in his Steam Library... On this episode of Staring at Screens, Dave and Lisa tell us more about the online competitive play in Awesomenauts and Joel explains the fiddly manual map building in Legend of Grimrock. Along the way we make reference to DOTA, Gunbound, Soldat, Clash of The Clans, and Ultima Underwear Underworld. It's still the beginning of 2013 and we're making new year's resolutions! Specifically, resolutions to finish some unfinished games that have been gathering dust on our shelves/Steam libraries. We also examine the reasons behind the phenomenon of not finishing games that we start, or in Vick's case, her reasons for finishing every single game. If you have any games that you resolve to finish in 2013, or have reasons to add about why people finish/don't finish games, write to us at hello@staringatscreens.org or tweet us @StaringScreens! We love to hear from our listeners, so tell us what you think! To round up, here be links! To that cool site that does an analysis of your Steam Library, and the app that was mentioned in the mailbag.
