In this episode of With That Being Said, J.R. Bang brings on longtime friend and hip-hop sparring partner Camp From The Port to revisit their decades-long Jay-Z vs. Nas debates and give Nas his flowers through a focused conversation on Nas's most underrated records. They each share their origin stories as fans—Camp initially turning off “The World Is Yours” on TV before eventually becoming a lifelong Nas listener, and J.R. coming in as a die-hard Jay-Z defender who grew up arguing Hov vs. Esco in high school and college. From there, they get into specific deep-cut Nas records that deserve more love, with Camp spotlighting “Undying Love” from I Am…, “Still Dreaming” and “Project Windows,” and “You Gotta Love It” off The Lost Tapes, while J.R. counters with favorites like “Small World,” “Last Words,” “Nas Is Coming,” and “Fear Of The Black Man's Dick” from the Untitled album. Along the way, they unpack the cultural impact of “Takeover” and “Ether,” the way fans lie about what albums they actually heard, why I Am… and Nastradamus are better than their reputations, and how Nas's late-career run with Hit-Boy has raised the bar for what aging rappers can sound like.

What is the purpose of life?In this reflective episode of Ant Diggity's Road to Victory, Ant explores the tension between becoming better and understanding what “better” even means. From discussing unreleased music and the pressure to fully commit to creativity… to unpacking the provocative Alan Watts quote:“If you knew what being better was, you would already be better.”This episode challenges the illusion of self-improvement and asks deeper questions:• Are we chasing growth or chasing validation?• What's outside the simulation?• Are we consciously living — or still dreaming?• If this is all temporary, what truly matters?Blending philosophy, faith, creativity, and self-discipline, Ant wrestles with the paradox of purpose: that sometimes the search for meaning is the very thing keeping us from experiencing it.This episode isn't about answers. It's about awareness.Because long as you're present… there isn't a problem.

Labor Day weekend in America is often the occasion for end of Summer activities. In this poem from the 1894 Songs from Vagabondia, poet Richard Hovey rows down a river in Maine connecting a lake and ponds. What does he find? The sense that Summer feels like a dream. The Parlando Project combines various words (usually literary poetry) with original music in different styles. We've released over 750 of these combinations. You can hear any of them and read more about our experience with the poems at our blog and archives located at frankhudson.org

Host Richard Cracknell and Jason McGovern are joined by author Martin Cloake ahead of the release of his brand new book: Still Dreaming: Another Year in the Life of a Premier League Club. This is the story of a season in the life of one of the Premier League's biggest clubs. But Tottenham Hotspur hold a unique position in that group, having won just two League Cups since the Premier League was formed and the modern football boom began. Authors Alex Fynn and Martin Cloake follow the team through the 2022/23 season, another in which promise came to nothing, and ask why it is that Spurs continually fail to take full advantage of opportunities presented by the modern game. A game the club helped create. Along the way in a season in which the fortunes of some of football's biggest names – including Antonio Conte and Harry Kane – would prove pivotal, they place the club's story in the context of the development of the world's most successful sporting league, drawing on the views of some of the key figures in the tale. An essential read for Spurs fans, this is also a look at what success means in today's global game, and what it takes to achieve it. It is a hard-hitting but balanced analysis of the way Tottenham Hotspur has been run for the last 20 years, written by two people who have close knowledge of the club. Still Dreaming follows on from 1996's book Dream On – “A Football Classic” FourFourTwo. Ashley recalls a few details from the bonus experience of getting to hear a talk from Heather French Henry (Miss America, 2000) speak about some trivia and little-known facts surrounding the costumes, and reveals a touching story about Heather French Henry's motivation behind becoming the curator of the Rosemary Clooney House.   Candy and Ashley then move on to their correction corner, where they set the record straight/offer their apologies about a few things they left out of the “Christmas Story Christmas” episode from two weeks ago! Finally, we end our 2022 with a special message from Heather French Henry herself!  If you go: The “White Christmas” exhibit can still be viewed at the museum through January 8, 2023 and more details can be found on their website at: https://www.bcmuseum.org/2-uncategorised/403-opening-of-holly-jolly-days The website for the Rosemary Clooney house can be found at: https://www.rosemaryclooney.org/ The original 2021 episode description read as follows: What's the best-selling Christmas song of all time, as well as the best-selling single ever, according to the Guiness Book of World Records?  If you guessed “White Christmas,” you'd be right! But here's the harder question: Do you know the story of how that song originated, and the series of events that followed, ultimately resulting in one of the most beloved Christmas movies of all time? Or how that film eventually spawned a stage version of the work? In this 2-part episode entitled “Still Dreaming of a White Christmas,” Candy and Ashley will discuss all this and much more! If you're a fan of the podcast Song Exploder, and a whole lot of people are, you know that it's all about creativity. A musician walks the audience through the components of their song and the inspirations and decisions that went into forming those parts as they came together as a whole. Meanwhile, Hrishikesh Hirway, creator of the show, drops in separated tracks so you can follow the story. It's somewhat surprising then that Hrishi, a musician himself, was unable to write a song for years, even during the run of his show that so many other people find inspirational. Any idea he would get would be shot down by the negative voices in his brain, which told him that anything he made was bound to suck, that he had no business even attempting music. Finally, an invitation came from musician Jenny Owen Youngs to collaborate on a song for her podcast about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The pressure was off and Jenny's belief in Hrishi's talent was enough to break through those horrible voices.Hrishikesh Hirway has a new single, Still Dreaming, out October 19th, and he's on tour with Jenny Owen Youngs. For music, tour dates, podcasts, and more information, visit Hrishikesh Hirway's website at hrishikesh.co. There's a better chance of Will Smith and Chris Rock co-hosting the Oscars than the Second Amendment being repealed and replaced by anti-gun language, but the dreams of gun control activists die hard, especially when they're losing ground across the country.

Nearly 10 years ago, former President Barack Obama announced a program designed to protect undocumented immigrants brought into the United States as children. The policy — Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or "DACA," — went into place in June 2012. By 2020, more than 600,000 former childhood arrivals had secured protection from deportation and the ability to work in the United States. But the policy faced numerous legal and executive challenges over the years that fueled a vocal nationwide movement of DACA recipients fighting for the rights of other dreamers. On this episode, Kaimin photo editor Antonio Ibarra joins Kaimin Cast host Austin Amestoy with the story of a DACA recipient living in Missoula who overcame unimaginable challenges and is working to help other dreamers do the same. In today's episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Jèan P. Jèan P is a Canton, Ohio based rapper and he recently released a new album called “Say What You Mean”. “Say What You Mean” is 14 tracks of honest and lyrical hip hop that like Jèan, doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. I highly recommend checking the album out on Spotify or wherever you listen to music, even if you're not a fan of hip hop. It's unlike most hip hop that's played on the radio or in the mainstream, and as you'll hear in this conversation, he has a true love for the culture and his artistry fully embodies his desire to be open about who he is as a person. Links to find the album to stream or to purchase are in the show notes for this episode. If you stick around until the end, Jèan also gave me the green light to include his song "JJ", which has an accompanying music video on YouTube for anyone interested. Jèan is an old college friend from Ohio University so you'll hear us talk about our experience in school here a little bit and we also riff on how his artistry has evolved since our college days up to now. For reference, his album “Still Dreaming” came out in 2012, the year I graduated. We start the podcast off talking about his new album “Say What You Mean” and the evolution of his creative process. We also discuss what it was like losing his parents at a young age and how he used the support system he had to grow into the person and artist he's become. We spend time talking about his job as a mailman during coronavirus, social justice, the teaching capabilities of hip hop and other topics.Stream "Say What You Mean" on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/6x36GhNA6z3M7lr9ZcoKcJPurchase on Bandcamp: https://jeanpthemc.bandcamp.com"J.J."
