In this special 9-year anniversary episode, I'm doing things a little differently. Instead of a guest interview, I'm doing a solocast in which I share nine shifts I've noticed in the parenting paradigm for those of us raising neurodivergent kids over the past almost decade since I first founded Tilt. Some of the things I explore in this episode include the evolution of language within the neurodiversity movement, the increased recognition of dual diagnoses like Autistic ADHD and new identifications such as PDA, how concepts like Polyvagal theory and co-reguation have profoundly changed the ways differently wired children are understood, the importance of centering neurodivergent voices, and much more. * I've put together a special anniversary playlist of the podcast episodes I reference in this episode over on Spotify. To listen to that, click here.*   About Debbie Debbie Reber, MA is a parenting activist, bestselling author, speaker, and the CEO and founder of Tilt Parenting, a resource, top-performing podcast, consultancy, and community with a focus on shifting the paradigm for parents raising and embracing neurodivergent children. We live in a society where success is often defined by external markers like prestigious jobs, academic achievements, or traditional milestones. But as parents of neurodivergent kids, we know our children's paths and timelines often look different. And while their journeys may not align with conventional notions of success, that doesn't mean they're any less meaningful or valuable. So, how can we redefine what success means—for our kids and for our families? That's one of the big questions I explore with today's guest, child psychologist Dr. Emily King. In our conversation, Dr. Emily and I dive into redefining success for neurodivergent students, emphasizing the importance of joy, self-discovery, and effectiveness in their learning journeys. We explore how cultural definitions of success can be limiting, what's happening in American public schools regarding neurodivergence, and the actionable steps we can take to help shift the paradigm. Most importantly, we talk about how to reframe “success” in our families in ways that empower our children to build autonomous, self-actualized lives on their terms.   About Dr. Emily King Dr. Emily King is a Child Psychologist and former School Psychologist who has worked with neurodivergent children and teens for over 20 years. She received a Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she worked at Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute and the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities. She spent five years as a School Psychologist in Houston, Texas specializing in providing school-based mental health services in K-12 public schools. Dr. Emily now works in private practice in North Carolina supporting the mental health needs of neurodivergent youth, their families, and their teachers. Dr. Emily hosts the Learn with Dr. Emily Substack where you can find her blogs and monthly parent workshops. She is also the creator of The Neurodiverse Classroom, a professional development curriculum for elementary and middle school educators. Dr. Emily has been featured on MSNBC's Morning Joe, quoted in The New York Times and The Washington Post, and has written for Parents.com. You can learn more with Dr. Emily by listening to her podcast or following her on Substack.   Things you'll learn from this episode Why the 2 key ingredients for success for neurodivergent students are joy coupled with effectiveness How cultural definitions of success can be limiting for neurodivergent kids, and what we can do about it What is the state of neurodivergence understanding in American public schools and what we can all do to shift the paradigm forward How we can redefine “success” in our families and for our children in ways that empower them to create autonomous, self-actualized adult lives   Resources mentioned Dr. Emily King's website Learn with Dr. Emily (Emily's Substack) Learn with Dr. Emily Podcast Dr. Mona Delahooke's website Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids by Dr. Mona Delahooke Beyond Behaviors: Using Brain Science and Compassion to Understand and Solve Children's Behavioral Challenges by Dr. Mona Delahooke Dr. Mona Delahooke on the Power of Brain-Body Parenting (Tilt Parenting podcast) Dr. Mona Delahooke on Looking Beyond Kids Challenging Behaviors (Tilt Parenting podcast) Dr. Dan Siegel & the Window of Tolerance Stephen Porgess & Polyvagal Theory Learn more about your ad choices. The holidays can be A LOT, especially when we've been in survival mode -- as many of us have been since the pandemic started. This has been a challenging year for us: Gill has been managing her cancer diagnosis and treatment, while Melia has been building her coaching business and moving to New York with her family. There's a lot of cultural pressure to make the holidays “the most wonderful time of the year,” but WE get to decide what our holidays look like. To lower stress and overwhelm and boost joy and connection, we start by zeroing in on what matters most to us. When our priority and intention is clear, we can let the rest go. A few questions to ask yourself when considering baking cookies, buying gifts, going to holiday events, etc.: Do I want to do this? If I want to do this, what do I want from the experience? What matters most to me? How does it affect my body budget (deposits/withdrawals), and how do I plan to stay fueled? Tell us: What are your intentions for this holiday season? In this episode, Julie and Ginger talk about the delicate balance between structure and nurture. What are the differences in punishment, consequences, accountability, and discipline? These terms are defined and discussed to determine what works best when doing trauma informed, therapeutic parenting and why. We should always seek to understand what is underneath the child's behaviors, and we need to ask why they are acting the way that they do. As Julie said, “None of this is easy. It's all about establishing a connection. This cannot be done without a relationship.” Check out the new book by Dr. Mona Delahooke, Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids. Dr. Delahooke says, “Human beings don't develop new strengths without some level of stretching, but it must be individualized.” This book can be ordered from ATN's bookstore at Brain-Body Parenting. This episode is dedicated to the trail-blazing trauma-informed and attachment-focused work done by Larry Smith, LCSW. (1951-2016)

I want to offer some context for today's episode. My guest is the phenomenal pediatric psychologist and author of the new book, Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids, Mona Delahooke. Mona is not a yoga teacher; in fact, her life's work focuses on looking beyond children's behaviors to understand the root cause -- which, in most cases, begins by looking at the nervous system. So, although her work focuses on children and how we parent and teach our children, there is so much beneath the surface that applies to all adults. None of us were parented the way that Mona and her colleagues suggest -- because the neuroscience simply wasn't there when we were kids. Our parents didn't have Polyvagal theory in their back pockets (we talk about this in the episode), they didn't know that the most effective way to manage our behavior was to co-regulate with us, to make sure our "platform" was sturdy, and to practice self-compassion.Now that we know these things, we have the opportunity to practice them in our own lives; to hold space for them in our yoga classes; to view our friends and family's negative behaviors through the lens of the nervous system instead of instantly judging them. This is THE stuff for me right now -- the intersection of neuroscience, psychology, and applied yoga philosophy or mindfulness. This is where we have the power to change our own lives and the lives of those we come into contact with. To break it down, in this episode here are a few of the things we cover:Mona's three-part framework for how to measure the state of the autonomic nervous system, and how to utilize it in working with childrenNew research about interoception and how interoceptive awareness can help children develop emotional literacyCo-regulation and how it's different from coddling or spoiling a child (plus how yoga teachers use it in their classes, even if they don't know it!)Why she feels that flexibility is the cornerstone of resilience for children and adults alikeShow notes: http://www.jasonyoga.com/podcast/episode261 Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/yogaland. One of the most important life skills we can teach our children is the ability to regulate their emotions-the skill of self-regulation. How do we nurture that skill in children is through a process called co-regulation.  Mona Delahooke, a clinical psychologist, and author of Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids explains what co-regulation is, why it's important, and how to do it.  We will also dispel some of the myths around co-regulation.  Co-regulation doesn't mean perfection. Dr. Mona Delahooke, clinical psychologist and author of Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids, is on for a deeper dive into the parenting conversation. The entire parenting system is focused on behavior and compliance, but is it actually working for our kids? Many behaviors are subconscious, so how do we engage a new way forward with “brain body parenting” to help our kids make good choices and consider the future impact of those choices? Dr. Delahooke teaches us to do that by focusing on what is causing our kids' behavior rather than the behavior itself, setting good boundaries, setting examples, and being empathetic. Themes: Behavior management, nervous system, parenting, Polyvagal theory, & education reform. Summary: Over her decades as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Mona Delahooke has routinely counseled distraught parents who struggle to manage their children's challenging, sometimes oppositional behaviors. These families focused on correcting or improving a child's lack of compliance, emotional outbursts, tantrums, and other “out of control” behavior. Science has taught us over the last three decades that these types of approaches are rooted in outdated information. "Behavior management" isn't only ineffective, it's harmful. Brain-body parenting can help you raise joyful, resilient boys, says Dr. Mona Delahooke. Boys' behavior offers clues as to what's going on inside the child -- and deciphering what's happening internally can help us tailor our response to the unique human individual before us. It's time to  "move from focusing on behaviors to focusing on how each child perceives, understands, and interprets their world," says Dr. Delahooke,  a child psychologist and author of Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids and Beyond Behaviors: Using Brain Science and Compassion to Understand and Solve Children's Behavioral Challenges. The autonomic nervous system is our "automatic nervous system," she explains. It controls our bodies' unconscious, non-voluntary reactions. Importantly, the triggers for each of us can be different. So, while some people aren't bothered by noisy environments or tags on their clothing, other people who experience those same triggers may feel "threatened," even though they are objectively safe. Their bodies may move into the "red zone," which is characterized by increased alertness and reactivity, an increased heart rate, and a desire or need to move. Chronic stress can lead to the "blue zone," a state in which humans often withdraw to conserve energy. The green, red, and blue zones are adaptive. "You are witnessing the power of human resilience," Dr. Delahooke says. "Those states are there to protect us." Learning to recognize these states of being can help parents determine an appropriate challenge zone for their kids -- and may reveal expectation gaps. You can use that information to more effectively and compassionately support your boys. In this episode, Jen, Janet & Mona discuss: What is brain-body parenting?
