In this episode Claire Bown is joined by Georgia Close and Harriet Body from the National Gallery of Australia, alongside Naomi Zouwer from the University of Canberra, to explore how the gallery co-designed its Creative Learning approach. The conversation traces an 18-month process of articulating a shared pedagogical framework shaped by national context, cultural responsibility, and First Nations-led principles. Rather than adopting an existing model, the team worked through workshops, observation, interviews and iterative “campaigns” to develop a cohesive, values-led approach.A key commitment was centring the artist's voice, placing artist intention in conversation with students' existing knowledge. From this, the team developed a Creative Learning strategy planning tool that supports inquiry-led, multimodal, embodied and reflective practice.Across the episode, they explore:How to develop a context-specific learning approach rather than importing a modelWhat it means in practice to centre the artist's voiceHow small, iterative “campaigns” can embed reflective practice in a teamHow multimodality and embodiment deepen engagement beyond discussionWhy joy is understood as a serious pedagogical commitmentWhat co-design and participatory action research look like inside a museum settingThis episode will resonate with anyone working in museums, galleries or cultural institutions who is thinking carefully about pedagogy, reflective practice, and how to articulate an approach that genuinely reflects their context and values. The Art Engager is written and presented by Claire Bown. Discovering Creativity: An Intimate Conversation with Scott EricksonWhat does it mean to live a creative life? Is creativity a talent, or is it an innate intelligence that we all possess? In this week's episode of The Creative Genius Podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the remarkable artist and storyteller, Scott Erickson, to explore these questions and so much more. Scott's journey as an artist has been deeply influenced by his unique experience with aphantasia—a condition where one cannot visualize images in their mind's eye—and he opens up about how this has shaped his creative expression.Together, we delve into the haunting nature of creativity, the role of pain in transforming life into art, and the importance of emotional intelligence in understanding the human experience. Scott's reflections on gratitude, surrender, and navigating the inner voice will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled with self-doubt or felt overwhelmed by the weight of their creative aspirations. But more than that, this conversation serves as a gentle reminder that creativity is not a linear journey. It's messy, it's beautiful, and it's deeply human. Scott's raw honesty will inspire you to listen more closely to your inner voice and trust that, even in the chaos, there's a path to something beautiful.
In this episode of What's Your Shine?, Dr. Shine interviews 12-year-old Chase Morgan about his experience with a 100 Day project as part of an "unschooling" approach to education. Chase explains that unschooling allows students to work on what interests them. His project involved generating daily ideas for unschooling activities over 100 days. Chase discusses his process, which typically involves sitting and thinking deeply to come up with ideas, then documenting them along with learning objectives and timeframes. Throughout the interview, Dr. Shine emphasizes Chase's admirable qualities, including his curiosity, work ethic, and self-awareness. They explore how Chase's talents (being detail-oriented, observant, hard-working, and goal-driven) and interests (geography, fishing, and mechanical things) intersect with the need for unschooling ideas. Chase shares some of his favorite ideas, including visiting a museum, shadowing his father at work, and conducting a fishing experiment. Dr. Shine highlights how one idea can lead to another, fostering continuous learning and exploration. The conversation also touches on the challenges Chase faced, primarily in generating new ideas as the project progressed. However, Chase notes that the discipline of daily work wasn't difficult because he found the process enjoyable. Dr. Shine commends Chase for his consistency and ability to catch up when falling behind, drawing parallels to broader life lessons about habit formation and perseverance. The episode concludes with a discussion about an upcoming event where participants will share their 100-day projects, and Dr. Shine suggests that Chase could potentially share or even sell his compiled list of unschooling ideas!

This year's international WDA conference in Canberra, Australia, is preceded by a series of webinars to familiarize the WDA community with the concept behind the conference. This conference will differ quite a bit from the conventional. One of the new concepts introduced will be the special presentation style applied through-out the conference. There will be no complicated figures, equations, or data tables. Presenters will showcase their work via story telling or through the arts. Sounds easier said than done. 104. Neal Foard - The Human Condition is Cooperation "An environment of generosity where people are, they are only too happy to give to others their time, their attention, their good feelings, their support, their sympathy. In an environment of generosity, you unlock speed, you unlock creativity, you unlock new ideas, and you know that new ideas are a compound interest article, right? Because with every new idea that gives birth to another new idea, and on and on, and it compounds itself." - Neal Foard Neal Foard Guest Bio: Neal Foard has spent 25 years in advertising and marketing, creating award winning campaigns for global power brands like Budweiser, Lexus and Sony.
