Send us a text! (add your email to get a response)We all know those moments—when everything feels either perfect or disastrous, when someone is either completely trustworthy or utterly toxic. "All-or-nothing," "black-and-white," or dichotomous thinking, shapes our relationships, political views, and self-perception in profound ways. But where does this all-or-nothing approach come from, and why is it so hard to escape? In this episode, we dive deep into the surprising evolutionary purpose behind rigid thinking patterns. Far from simply being a cognitive flaw, black and white thinking often emerges as a survival mechanism for those who've experienced trauma or instability. The problem arises when we carry these protective patterns into everyday life, relationships, and social media interactions where complexity is essential. We explore how dichotomous thinking manifests differently across various conditions—from personality disorders where it permeates every interaction to PTSD where it might remain confined to specific triggers. We share personal examples, research findings, and practical strategies for recognizing when you've fallen into extreme thinking. Then, we outline the evidence-based strategies for breaking free of the extremes of dichotomous thinking.Whether you're dealing with a loved one who sees the world in absolutes or noticing this pattern in yourself, we understand why our brains crave certainty and how embracing the gray areas might be the key to deeper connections and better mental health. We offer both compassion for why we develop these patterns and concrete tools for finding your way back to nuance.Resources:Bonfá‐Araujo, B., Oshio, A., & Hauck‐Filho, N. (2022). The clock regulates metabolism and gene expression based on time of day. Dysregulation can lead to health issues like increased glucose levels. Peripheral clocks can operate independently of the central clock. Exercise timing can enhance performance and adaptation. Feeding patterns should align with activity for optimal health. Chronotype influences individual preferences for sleep and activity. Caffeine affects the sympathetic nervous system but doesn't phase shift the clock. Alcohol can disrupt circadian function and health. Adaptation of clocks can occur even in extreme light conditions. Circadian clocks significantly influence muscle and tendon health. Disruption of circadian rhythms can lead to metabolic issues. Aging affects the ability of circadian clocks to regulate gene expression. Inactivity does not stop circadian clocks, but it affects their function. Nutrition timing is crucial for maintaining healthy circadian rhythms. Exercise can enhance the function of circadian clocks in muscles. Understanding the communication between muscle and tendon is vital for rehabilitation. Time-restricted feeding may extend lifespan and improve health. Research on circadian rhythms can inform strategies for injury recovery. We live happier, healthier, and longer lives when we feel deeply connected to other people. And while we might experience and express this need in different ways, the need for social connection is really universal. It's so fundamental that we have built-in biological mechanisms to encourage it. When we're socially isolated, our brain triggers cravings for human contact, in much the same way that it triggers cravings for food after a few hours of not eating. So, we literally crave connection. And that's why so many of us felt starved for connection during the pandemic. The problem is that in everyday life, many of us simply ignore the craving or we deny it. We treat socializing like an indulgence rather than an essential health behavior, and we fail to prioritize it. We recognize the importance of sleep, exercise, and healthy eating, and we take steps to maintain them. But going out with friends, going to Happy Hour, Trivia Night, these things often take a backseat. Somehow, they feel less important when in reality,

On this episode of Longevity by Design, Dr. Gil Blander welcomes Dr. Yanina Pepino, Professor of Ingestive Behavior at the University of Illinois, to discuss the fascinating link between taste, personal preferences, and long-term health. Yanina's research shows our food environment significantly shapes cravings. This exposure starts as early as the womb, impacting future preferences.Yanina explains that bariatric surgery and GLP-1 medications are powerful tools for weight management. However, she emphasizes the importance of using these interventions as opportunities to adopt healthier eating habits. She highlights the potential of GLP-1 agonists as a treatment for alcohol use disorder, noting their ability to reduce alcohol cravings. The conversation also explores the impact of non-nutritive sweeteners. While generally considered safe, Yanina's research suggests that these sweeteners may have metabolic effects. She encourages listeners to be mindful of their intake and to prioritize natural sugars in moderation.Episode highlights:Introduction: 00:00:00Why have you decided to be a scientist: 00:03:40How did you get interested in the taste & smell preference in humans: 00:04:40The Impact of Maternal Alcohol Consumption During Pregnancy on Newborn Alcohol Preferences: 00:06:00What you consume during pregnancy can influence your newborn's preferences: 00:08:00What Are the Individual Differences in Human Taste: 00:08:20Do you know if taste perception is influenced by an individual's specific macro- and micronutrient needs: 00:14:00What are the effects of bariatric surgery-induced weight loss on flavor perception, eating behavior, and alcohol drinking: 00:16:00The Impact of GLP-1 Drug Use on flavor perception: 00:26:45The Impact of lifestyle-related Weight Loss on flavor perception: 00:30:10The Negative Impact of Alcohol Consumption on Bariatric Surgery Patients: 00:34:30The potential positive impact of GLP-1 injection on Alcohol Consumption: 00:39:30What Is the Effect of Non-Caloric Sweeteners on Post-Meal Glucose Spikes and Health: 00:41:30Bitter taste and why some of us don't like it: 00:52:00Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic on Taste and Smell Perception: 00:54:30Yanina's top tip for healthspan: 00:42:10Early Taste Exposure Shapes Lifelong PreferencesWhat we eat during pregnancy and infancy might pre-program a child's future food preferences. Yanina's research reveals that exposure to flavors, even in the womb, can influence what we enjoy eating later in life. This highlights the importance of establishing healthy eating patterns from the very beginning, as those early experiences can have lasting effects. Parents and caregivers have a powerful role in shaping those early preferences for a healthier future generation. Bariatric Surgery and GLP-1 Offer a Chance to "Reset"Both bariatric surgery and GLP-1 medications are not just quick fixes, but opportunities to rewire your relationship with food. While these interventions can significantly impact hunger hormones and promote weight loss, their long-term success relies on behavioral change. Yanina stresses the importance of using this period of altered appetite to explore new, healthier food choices and establish lasting dietary habits. We Appreciate You!As a token of our gratitude, we're excited to offer you 15% off your next purchase. It's explained that simply cutting calories can lead to muscle loss alongside fat, which is counterproductive since muscle is essential for maintaining metabolism. The key is focusing on losing fat while preserving muscle mass, which can be achieved through high protein intake and strategic fasting. The conversation also explores the effectiveness of keto diets in managing conditions like diabetes by forcing the body to produce its own sugar through fat and protein metabolism. The episode breaks down how insulin resistance can be addressed by limiting carbohydrate intake, allowing the body to regulate blood sugar more efficiently. This approach not only helps manage blood sugar levels but also supports fat loss without compromising muscle mass.Lastly, insights are shared on the role of GLP medications, fasting, and proper nutrition in optimizing fat-burning and muscle preservation. The potential pitfalls of muscle loss, gallstones, and other side effects from improper dieting or medications are discussed, emphasizing the importance of understanding the body's metabolic functions for sustainable health and weight management.Highlights of the Podcast00:02 - The stage to discuss the calories in/calories out model.01:24 - A calorie deficit leads to weight loss, while excess calories result in fat gain.02:41 - Personal Experience with Calorie Reduction03:57 - Observations on Individual Differences:05:10 - The role they play in fat storage and metabolic function.06:49 - Body's Energy Source - ATP vs. Calories08:15 - Breaking Down the Body's Components09:32 - Sugars vs. Fats in Fat Storage10:23 - Misconception About Calories13:57 - Role of Insulin in Absorption15:21 - High Glycemic Foods and Fat Storage:16:43 - Glucagon and Fat Burning18:17 - Why Proteins Don't Turn into Fat21:39 - The key is not to lose weight but to lose fat while preserving muscle mass22:48 - Protein's Role in Fat Loss24:06 - Keto Diet & Sugar Production25:29 - Diabetes & Insulin Resistance 27:42 - Fasting to Restart Fat-Burning 28:53 - GLP-1 Receptor Agonists 32:26 - Macro Counting vs. Hormones 36:31 - Reversing Type 2 Diabetes with Keto
