In some of her books, Laura Burges writes about addiction, which she sees as a metaphor for the craving we all experience that leads to suffering. To counter this, the dharma, much like recovery, is passed from person to person. In this talk, she examines the fable of Rumplestiltskin and how greed and craving can take hold of us like a curse or a spell. By facing our demons and naming them, we break their power to control us or diminish our courage, integrity and potential. She points out that the tale also refers to family karma passed on over generations, much like addiction can be. ______________ Ryuko Laura Burges, a lay-entrusted dharma teacher in the Soto Zen tradition, lectures and leads retreats at practice centers in Northern California. She received monastic training at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, the first Zen Buddhist Monastery in the United States. Laura taught children for 35 years and mentored other teachers, helping to bring mindfulness practice into the elementary classroom.Laura is active in recovery, co-founded the Sangha in Recovery Program at the San Francisco Zen Center, and is the abiding teacher at Lenox House Meditation Group in Oakland. Her two children's books are "Buddhist Stories for Kids" and "Zen for Kids." Her latest book is "The Zen Way of Recovery: An Illuminated Path Out of the Darkness of Addiction." Susan Druding was a graduate student at the University of California-Berkeley when she first learned to spin and weave. In the Bay Area of the 1960s, fiber interest and social tensions both ran high. Without a business plan but with a lease on a small storefront, Susan and a business partner opened Straw Into Gold, a store devoted mostly to spinning and dyeing. Spinning legend Bette Hochberg, author of Handspinner's Handbook and Spin Span Spun, was a regular, and legendary spinning wheel maker Alden Amos set up shop in the basement. Award-winning spinner Celia Quinn ran the old carding machine that they used to create rainbow batts. They became the first United States distributor of Ashford spinning wheels and equipment. Whether as a shop owner or storyteller, Susan Druding has yarns like nobody else. This episode was originally released in 2021. It's our annual awards season at AFTN and we kick off handing out the gongs with our ones for Whitecaps Player of the Year, Young Player, Academy Player, Female Player, Unsung Hero, and the best game, goal, and save of the season past. Will Ryan Gauld win any? No spoilers but we do sit down for an in-depth chat with the Whitecaps Designated Player to look at the season past and the excitingly busy 2023 that lies ahead. How did he feel both he and the team performed? How much did his early season concussions hinder him? Where did it go wrong this year? How much is he looking forward to fighting on four front next season and playing continental competition? Is he getting fed up with people asking him why he's not in the Scotland squad? And could he perhaps line up for Canada one day? We cover all of that and more! The MLS Cup final is now set. We look at this weekend's two Conference finals, as well as the CPL Championship game which saw Forge FC win a third title in four years. Plus we look ahead to the big CPL event in Langley on Wednesday night that will see the new team's official name, identity, and more revealed. Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we've been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. One of the most important things for a character to do in a story is commit to a course of action, whether that action is good or bad. Nothing is more frustrating than a protagonist who can't make decisions, and nothing is more boring than a villain who never does anything. Lucky for us, today's stories feature characters who are ready to act to achieve their goals, for better or for worse. We always hope that the stories we share with you on The Apple Seed spark memories for you to share with the people that you love. Sometimes those memories are sparked by listening to personal stories, and other times by listening to tall tales and fairy tales. So sit back, relax, and get ready to have the memories wash over you as you listen to stories about whales, frisbees, and getting older.   On today's episode, enjoy the following: "Edith's Lyrebird" by Jackie Kerin (7:06) Every once in a while you may have had a relationship of sorts with an animal that, while not your pet, sort of lives its life in your space to the degree that you understand each other. This story is a reflection upon that kind of relationship, and it's from Jackie Kerin.       "How the Whale Got His Throat" by Jim Weiss from A Collection of Just So Stories As Read by Jim Weiss (8:00) This next animal story called "How the Whale Got His Throat" is from Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories", so named because the stories Kipling told to his daughter had to be told "Just so".    "On Turning a Certain Age" by Susi Wolf from Peeling Life Makes Your Eyes Water (3:42)  Here's a little piece from Susi Wolf that's a reflection on turning a certain age. We all hope that with the passage of time we continue to learn. And that message is at the heart of Susi's story.    "Dancing Jack" by The Storycrafters from Straw Into Gold (27:06) Up next is the storytelling duo The Storycrafters, Jeri Burns and Barry Marshall, with a piece called "Dancing Jack". It's a musical, rhythmic celebration of story in much the same way it always is when you listen to a great Storycrafters story.    Radio Family Journal: "Frisbee with Grandpa" (5:15) Listening to Susi Wolf's reflection on getting older called "On Turning a Certain Age" brings back a memory that Sam would like to share as today's entry in his Radio Family Journal.

Matt Oskamp and Amelia Campbell started Apple Falls Cider Company in 2017. The cider house is situated alongside the farm store at Campbell Orchards located in Prince Edward County, Ontario. Campbell Orchards is owned by Amelia’s parents Colin and Dianne Campbell. When Colin’s father died due to a plane crash, he took on the orchard that was started by his father. That was back in the late seventies when Colin was just in college. Today the orchard and farm stand is a testament of love and perseverance. There is a cider garden outdoors from the tasting room with ample seating at picnic tables. This is a family friendly scene where you can also stop and pick up a pie or meats on your way home from work. Priyanka Bakaya, 34, founder and CEO of PK Clean, invented a scalable process to convert plastics back into the diesel fuel they came from, not quite spinning straw into gold but the process does convert garbage into fuel profitably. When Monteleone had learned that plastics could be converted back into oil.
