The way Australians think about retirement is changing. More retirees are heading back to work, not just for financial reasons but because the emotional and mental shift after leaving a career is just as significant. CEO of the Australian Psychologist Society Dr Zena Burges told Dean Miller on 4BC Drive, "There's quite a lot of research that shows that work is good for your mental health because it gives you a sense of purpose, and it also links you with other people." "And if you're an older person in a workplace, often you take the role of a mentor of younger people, but older people also are quite capable of learning new skills and enjoy the challenge of doing so," Dr Burges continued. fWotD Episode 2820: Castell Coch Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 23 January 2025 is Castell Coch.Castell Coch (Welsh for 'red castle'; Welsh pronunciation: [ˈkas.tɛɬ koːχ]) is a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle built above the village of Tongwynlais, Cardiff, in Wales. The first castle on the site was built by the Normans after 1081 to protect the newly conquered town of Cardiff and control the route along the Taff Gorge. Abandoned shortly afterwards, the castle's earth motte was reused by Gilbert de Clare as the basis for a new stone fortification, which he built between 1267 and 1277 to control his freshly annexed Welsh lands. This castle may have been destroyed in the native Welsh rebellion of 1314. In 1760, the castle ruins were acquired by John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, as part of a marriage settlement that brought the family vast estates in South Wales.John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, inherited the castle in 1848. One of Britain's wealthiest men, with interests in architecture and antiquarian studies, he employed the architect William Burges to rebuild the castle, "as a country residence for occasional occupation in the summer", using the medieval remains as a basis for the design. Burges rebuilt the outside of the castle between 1875 and 1879, before turning to the interior; he died in 1881 and the work was finished by Burges's remaining team in 1891. Bute reintroduced commercial viticulture into Britain, planting a vineyard just below the castle, and wine production continued until the First World War. He made little use of his new retreat, and in 1950 his grandson, the 5th Marquess of Bute, placed it into the care of the state. It is now controlled by the Welsh heritage agency Cadw.Castell Coch's external features and the High Victorian interiors led the historian David McLees to describe it as "one of the greatest Victorian triumphs of architectural composition". The exterior, based on 19th-century studies by the antiquarian George Clark, is relatively authentic in style, although its three stone towers were adapted by Burges to present a dramatic silhouette, closer in design to mainland European castles such as Chillon than native British fortifications. The interiors were elaborately decorated, with specially designed furniture and fittings; the designs include extensive use of symbolism drawing on classical and legendary themes. Joseph Mordaunt Crook wrote that the castle represented "the learned dream world of a great patron and his favourite architect, recreating from a heap of rubble a fairy-tale castle which seems almost to have materialised from the margins of a medieval manuscript".The surrounding Castell Coch beech woods contain rare plant species and unusual geological features and are protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Thursday, 23 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Castell Coch on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ruth.

Sustainability is arguably at or near the top of the agenda for individuals and organisations now more than ever as net zero targets get closer. But the green landscape can be difficult to navigate given the number of buzzwords and phrases that abound. A new edition of The Scotsman's Sustainable Scotland podcast, in partnership with independent UK law firm Burges Salmon delves into the topics of natural capital, sustainable land use and nature-based solutions to help listeners make sense of these concepts and their role in the push to net zero
How can we use our practice to see us through troubled times and remain a light against the darkness? Laura Burges encourages us to see Buddhist practice as a laboratory, a place to experiment with our own experience. Drawing from the book, "Buddhism Without Beliefs" by Stephen Batchelor, she likens the Four Noble Truths to a diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment for the challenges facing us and the world. If they were contained in bottles, each would come with a simple instruction label:Life is marked by suffering or anguish - "Recognize Me" The cause of suffering is desire - "Understand Me"There can be an end to suffering - "Realize Me"The Noble 8-Fold Path is the prescription - "Cultivate Me" To approach our practice as an experiment, she encourages us to develop an agnostic curiosity rather than hardening the teachings into firm beliefs. In this way, we can practice with an open mind and heart. ______________ Ryuko Laura Burges, a lay entrusted dharma teacher in the Soto Zen tradition, teaches classes, lectures, and leads retreats in Northern California. How can Buddhist philosophy help us address the everyday suffering we encounter in a human body - the accidents, falls, missteps, mistakes, broken bones and broken hearts? In this talk, Laura Burges recounts her own experience following a recent fall and injury. She shares practices and reminders that can be helpful when we experience "The thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to" of which Hamlet spoke. Among these are:1. Notice that you are safe in this moment.2. Love your inner child and past.3. Remember impermanence and that our troubles will change 4. Respond rather than react - stop and take 3 deep breaths.5. Don't take things personally.6. Find the things you can say yes to. ______________ Ryuko Laura Burges, a lay entrusted dharma teacher in the Soto Zen tradition, teaches classes, lectures, and leads retreats in Northern California. (Spirit Rock Meditation Center)
How can our practice inform encounters with dark times, when we feel loss or face a turning point with trepidation? Laura Burges shares that we can find "fountains of joy" even in going to the places that scare us. Our practice is not separate from the dark places - we can turn towards the darkness and examine it clearly and experience the "soft heart of sadness" in being alive. She draws a parallel with the Greek myth of Persephone whose time spent annually in Hades results in the joy reflected in the return of Spring each year. In fact, those times that challenge us most can be a garden for developing our empathy and compassion for others in the world when they suffer. ______________Ryuko Laura Burges, a lay entrusted dharma teacher in the Soto Zen tradition, teaches classes, lectures, and leads retreats in Northern California. In some of her books, Laura Burges writes about addiction, which she sees as a metaphor for the craving we all experience that leads to suffering. To counter this, the dharma, much like recovery, is passed from person to person. In this talk, she examines the fable of Rumplestiltskin and how greed and craving can take hold of us like a curse or a spell. By facing our demons and naming them, we break their power to control us or diminish our courage, integrity and potential. She points out that the tale also refers to family karma passed on over generations, much like addiction can be. ______________ Ryuko Laura Burges, a lay-entrusted dharma teacher in the Soto Zen tradition, lectures and leads retreats at practice centers in Northern California. A history of the Hanseatic League normally begins with the story of the foundation, destruction and refoundation of Lübeck. This series will not do that. For once, we already had a whole episode of the Foundation of Lübeck. If you want to check it out, look for episode 105 of the History of the Germans Podcast. But more importantly, the foundation of Lübeck, is still just the foundation of a city. Do not get me wrong, Lübeck is a stunning city and its Rathaus and the magnificent churches, including the astounding Marienkirche tell us about the wealth and the civic pride of its inhabitants. But then, Burges is an even more astounding merchant city, as are Antwerp, Amsterdam, not to speak of Florence or Venice. What I mean is that if Lübeck, Bremen, Hamburg, Gdansk and Riga had just been successful trading cities in the Middle Ages, the cities of Bergen, Novgorod and King's Lynn would not still remind everyone of their old business relationship. It isn't the size and beauty of its cities that that makes the Hanseatic League special, it is the way they co-operated. And that does not begin with the foundation of Lübeck, but with something that happened shortly after the foundation of Lübeck, in 1161.The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by https://www.windrep.org/Michel_Rondeau (Michel Rondeau) As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comFacebook: @HOTGPodTwitter: @germanshistoryInstagram: history_of_the_germansReddit: u/historyofthegermansPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/Historyofthegermans

Most people have their go to 10 exercises even though they haven't directly identified them. These are the exercises will likely be the most bang for your buck + exercises that you ENJOY and WORK WELL for you. Why identify these? Well, especially when it comes to intuitive lifting, or lifting on the fly, it's nice to have these go to exercises in your back pocket. When I traveled the world for a year, it was easy to throw together workouts when we'd get a gym membership or a drop in, because I know my GO TO exercises. Here they are in short, and then I'll break down WHY I have chosen each one as opposed to other potential exercises. Also, I have this in an old IG post if you really want to go digging, but I'll also tell you here, where each video was taken, IF you don't happen to go searching for the post. 10 Go-to Exercises: ▪️Front squat (Chiang mai) ▪️Sumo dead (Budapest) ▪️Hip thrust (Arequipa) ▪️Bulgarian split squat (Budapest) ▪️B stance Romanian Deadlift (Santiago) ▫️Bench press/Push up (couldn't find Vietnam bench video, so you get Peru) ▫️Strict press (home lol) ▫️Pull up (Burges, Belgium) ▫️Seated Row (Chiang Mai) ▫️Farmer Carry (not videoed)

I was born and raised in the same apartment that I still live in today in New York City. My whole life I wanted to prevent endangered species from going extinct. I got my Bachelors in Pre-Veterinary Medicine but switched courses to pursue my Masters in Conservation Biology after spending a month in the neotropical rainforests of Belize as a field technician on a project that studies jaguars, pumas, and ocelots. I’m currently on the road to be a wildlife biologist and still figuring out which animal I want to focus my conservation work on but am mainly interested in primates and wild cats and working in people-animal conflict research. I am fascinated with the universe around us & have always felt drawn to the moon. I grew up drawing fairies and creatures from The Spiderwick Chronicles and believed in impossible things. I am an only child so drawing was always something I got lost in, creating a world of my own. My mother is an artist and always encouraged me to never stop creating. I created Living Luna with the goal to make people feel good about themselves again, while also finding a way to give back to a global cause. When giving back, I wanted to target three foundations that support our existence: humanity, the environment, and animals. By giving back to the three essences of life that make up our little blue planet, you're helping to make this world a better place. My favorite part about my job is that I get to connect with others and have my art in the homes of people halfway across the world. Thank you for being a part of my journey.

There are many anti-Big Tech activists and politicians who want to heavily regulate or dismantle companies like Amazon, Google, Apple, and Facebook. They fear that these companies have become too big and too powerful, often even referring to these companies as ‘monopolies.' But maybe this isn't a fair characterization. Perhaps these Big Tech companies need to offer far more value to consumers than monopolies particularly do, because they are all in competition with each other. That is the argument put forward by today's guest, Nicolas Petit. Nicolas is a professor of competition law at both the European University Institute and the College of Europe in Burges. He is the author of the recently released book, https://www.amazon.com/Big-Tech-Digital-Economy-Moligopoly/dp/0198837704 (Big Tech and the Digital Economy: The Moligopoly Scenario).

Anthony Burges was persecuted during the English Civil War. He was also an academic whose thoughts on justification would be wide read. When asked to submit himself to the Church of England, he refused and was pushed out of his post. This sermon has that "Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God," by Jonathan Edwards or Charles Spurgeons "Compel Them To Come In." It intensely reminds us that the end of our life will come and the way that we lived during this time will be judged on that day. Special thanks to Dave Seip for reading this sermon. He lives in Denton with his wife and serves his church in multiple ways including teaching and helping maintain the Sunday livestream. Wykład dr. Daniela Tyborowskiego, Muzeum Ziemi PAN [15 grudnia 2019] Kambryjska eksplozja życia – to termin, który opisuje rewolucję biologiczną na naszej planecie, która zaszła ok. 540 mln lat temu. Co się za nim kryje? Z jakim procesem mieliśmy wówczas do czynienia? – Chengjiang w Chinach i Burgess Pass w Kanadzie.

Cardiff Castle (Welsh: Castell Caerdydd) is a medieval castle and Victorian Gothic revival mansion located in the city centre of Cardiff, Wales. The original motte and bailey castle was built in the late 11th century by Norman invaders on top of a 3rd-century Roman fort. The castle was commissioned either by William the Conqueror or by Robert Fitzhamon, and formed the heart of the medieval town of Cardiff and the Marcher Lord territory of Glamorgan. In the 12th century the castle began to be rebuilt in stone, probably by Robert of Gloucester, with a shell keep and substantial defensive walls being erected. Further work was conducted by The 6th Earl of Gloucester in the second half of the 13th century. Cardiff Castle was repeatedly involved in the conflicts between the Anglo-Normans and the Welsh, being attacked several times in the 12th century, and stormed in 1404 during the revolt of Owain Glyndŵr. After being held by the de Clare and Despenser families for several centuries, the castle was acquired by The 13th Earl of Warwick and Comte de Aumale in 1423. Lord Warwick conducted extensive work on the castle, founding the main range on the west side of the castle, dominated by a tall octagonal tower. Following the Wars of the Roses, the status of the castle as a Marcher territory was revoked and its military significance began to decline. The Herbert family took over the property in 1550, remodelling parts of the main range and carrying out construction work in the outer bailey, then occupied by Cardiff's Shire Hall and other buildings. During the English Civil War Cardiff Castle was initially taken by a Parliamentary force, but was regained by Royalist supporters in 1645. When fighting broke out again in 1648, a Royalist army attacked Cardiff in a bid to regain the castle, leading to the Battle of St Fagans just outside the city. Cardiff Castle escaped potential destruction by Parliament after the war and was instead garrisoned, probably to protect against a possible Scottish invasion. In the mid-18th century, Cardiff Castle passed into the hands of the Stuart dynasty, Marquesses of Bute. John, 1st Marquess of Bute, employed Capability Brown and Henry Holland to renovate the main range, turning it into a Georgian mansion, and to landscape the castle grounds, demolishing many of the older medieval buildings and walls. During the first half of the 19th century the family became extremely wealthy as a result of the growth of the coal industry in Glamorgan. However, it was The 3rd Marquess of Bute who truly transformed the castle, using his vast wealth to back an extensive programme of renovations under William Burges. Burges remodelled the castle in a Gothic revival style, lavishing money and attention on the main range. The resulting interior designs are considered to be amongst "the most magnificent that the gothic revival ever achieved".[2] The grounds were re-landscaped and, following the discovery of the old Roman remains, reconstructed walls and a gatehouse in a Roman style were incorporated into the castle design. Extensive landscaped parks were built around the outside of the castle. In the early 20th century, The 4th Marquess of Bute inherited the castle and construction work continued into the 1920s. The Bute lands and commercial interests around Cardiff were sold off or nationalised until, by the time of the Second World War, little was left except the castle. During the war, extensive air raid shelters were built in the castle walls; they could hold up to 1,800 people. When the Marquess died in 1947, the castle was given to the City of Cardiff. Today the castle is run as a tourist attraction, with the grounds housing the "Firing Line" regimental museum and interpretation centre. The castle has also served as a venue for events, including musical performances and festivals. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/allthingsplantagenet/support

A great benefit of homeschooling is the ability to both incorporate your family’s cultural heritage into your children’s educational experience, as well as explore other cultures. So last month, to celebrate Black History Month, Mike Smith sat down with Joyce Burges, Founder of National Black Home Educators, to talk about honoring cultural heritage. Hear Joyce share some of the engaging ways she and her children have explored and nurtured their African-American roots—in today’s episode of Homeschool Talks!

Welcome to Episode 195. Last week we explored why “Parenchyma are Key” and this week we'll talk about why “Storytelling is Key” and how we can better educate others about trees, arboriculture and community forestry through great storytelling. Species Spotlight: Burgess Oak In 1915, Richard F. Burges, tree advocate, brought a sapling live oak from California and planted it in his yard in El Paso, against the common wisdom of the day that oak trees could not survive the harsh desert climate. With the same commitment he gave to all his causes, Mr. Burges nurtured his live oak to maturity, and the Burges Oak remains a testament to the tenacity of live oaks and early residents of Texas.
Let me paint a mental image: summery Friday night, crowd cheering, stands full of fans, the sound of body-to-body impact. You probably guessed it by now; we're talking high school football, a staple event in any sports-centric community. Maybe what doesn't immediately come to mind is a multi-million dollar LED display showcasing highlights in slow-motion and illuminating the crowd with sponsors and promotions. This professional sports experience on a high school level is a reality now, and with this high quality technology comes amazing benefits and growing pains. On this episode of the Pro AV podcast, we're joined by Clint Burges, Senior Event Production and Onsite-Tech Manager for Nevco. After 11 years at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX, Burges knows the impact high school and collegiate football can have on an institution, both culturally and financially. "Curriculum directors are starting to realize there's a lot of mitigating factors here that we can benefit a lot of areas, not just the football coach and not just the AD. We can benefit so much more within the community with it," Burges said. He comes on the podcast to break down the creative ways LED stadium displays are bringing communities closer together, bringing revenue to schools, giving students opportunities for CTE, and some of the difficulties in training local users on the full capacities of a rich, versatile LED screen. "Lot of these people, they don't get to go to a Cowboys game or Spurs game or Pelicans game and see what's out there. So they have to rely on us and they had to rely a little bit on what's out in the real market to say 'Hey, here are some things we want to do, you know, here's what we want to do,' and that's where we come in to kind of assist that to say here's how you do it," Burges said. "Once that's over with, you know, it's up to you guys to sit down and actually repeat that process and get savvy on it." It was insane. Came outside and saw a bright red light in the sky. Knew immediately it wasn't an airplane or helicopter. It was flying approx 5-10k feet when spotted. I pulled my phone out and started recording. When I zoomed in it was an obvious saucer traveled from one end of the sky to over the horizon in about 90 seconds. Also gained altitude extremely fast. Speaker Charlotte Ribeyrol (Sorbonne University; Trinity College, Oxford) Abstract: This paper focuses on the chromatic anachronism of William Burges’s Great Bookcase (1859-62, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford) which was first exhibited in the Medieval Court of the 1862 International Exhibition. Modelled on a surviving piece of polychrome French Gothic furniture, and painted by no fewer than 14 promising artists (including Edward Burne-Jones and Simeon Solomon), it represents the Pagan and Christian origins of art and yet some of the colours used were modern pigments devised by an expanding chemical industry. A fellow exhibitor of painted furniture at the Medieval Court, William Morris shared a similar passion for medieval France, which his early poetry construed as a golden age, contrasting with the bleakness of the industrial present. However some of his poems also introduce effects of chromatic disjunction and anachronism, notably in ‘Golden Wings’, which H.H. Statham analysed in 1897 as ‘characteristic of a decorator poet’, quoting the expression ‘red brick lip’ as ‘a sign of the times’ rather than of the architecture of the age of Chrétien de Troyes. Drawing on the complex description and inscription of these shifting chromatic materialities, I wish to show how the convergence of Victorian debates on ancient forms of polychromy and the colours of industrial modernity shaped Morris’s and Burges’s early poetic and artistic practice.
Matthew Winterbottom - curator of late nineteenth-century British sculpture and decorative arts at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford - responds to Charlotte Ribeyrol's paper on ‘”Red brick lip”: Morris, Burges and the poetry of architecture’

Joel Burges and Wayne Marshall, MIT’s Mellon Fellows in the Humanities (2009-11), will contribute to the rethinking of media studies at MIT by taking up the shared metaphor of fashion—the fashionable, the old-fashioned, the re-fashioned. Burges will talk about the turn away from the digital in contemporary cinema, particularly the case of Fantastic Mr. Fox, in an attempt to think about the uneven development of media over time. Marshall will discuss how popular but privatized platforms like Facebook and YouTube, pop culture fashion—and the negotiable refashionability of both—present crucial challenges to the study of media today. Joel Burges works at the intersection of literary studies, critical studies, and media studies. His first book, which is in progress, is entitled The Uses of Obsolescence; it considers the fate of historical thinking in the media of late modernity, especially literature and cinema. His second book, in its very early stages, is called Fiction after TV; it considers how a major mode of imaginative processing—fiction—is altered by the introduction of TV to post-1945 mediascapes. Wayne Marshall is an ethnomusicologist, blogger (wayneandwax.com), and DJ, specializing in the musical and cultural production of the Caribbean and the Americas, and their circulation in the wider world. Currently a Mellon Fellow at MIT, he’s writing a book on music, social media, and digital youth culture. He co-edited and contributed to Reggaeton (Duke 2009) and has published in journals such as Popular Music and Callaloo while writing for popular outlets like XLR8R, The Wire, and the Boston Phoenix.
