Carbon fiber bike frames have become ubiquitous in the high-end world, but metal bikes are making a comeback — and the number of steel full-suspension bikes we've reviewed in the last few years is a testament to that. So we sat down with Daniel Yang and Nick Neuhaus of Neuhaus Metalworks to chat about the case for metal bikes; hear the story of their respective journeys into frame building; talk about bike sizing and size-specific geometry; and discover that Daniel and our Bike Editor, David, are maybe secretly the same person (?)RELATED LINKS:Bag BalmBLISTER+ MembershipThis Week's Gear GiveawayTOPICS & TIMES:Introducing Nick and Daniel (2:50)Are Daniel and David secretly the same person? "Most of our theme is maps and charts, we are map and chart people. So wherever that little corner of the world is special to you or to somebody you love or somebody wants to give well wishes to, we can pinpoint it down to a street address or we can design an entire country from an actual nautical chart, graphic, map topo, aerial map, aeronautical map, anything that's close to your heart," said Janice Sears, Owner of CHART Metalworks.Founded in 2008, CHART Metalworks has been handcrafting beautiful jewelry, accessories, and home decor pieces that are all about charts and maps put together with boat resin in the heart of downtown Portland. Janice Sears took over as owner right before the pandemic and while it was challenging their customers grew as they wanted more one-of-a-kind pieces that tell a story of one's life journey. "I have to tell you, that the community and I don't know if it's just Maine or just Portland or just the women in Portland, but everybody is so supportive, so friendly. 'How can I help?'  It's so quick to become a friend, you know, so quick to help when I asked for it. Especially because six months later, we entered into the COVID scene. The city of Portland just came to our rescue and did everything they could to help us and I just can't say enough about the people of Maine. I am proud to live here. I'm proud to say that I'm from here and it is my mission to go to every place," said Janice. Not only has the small business focused on jewelry and charts and map designs. They have also expanded into new designs."One thing we just launched was, instead of an actual graphic piece under the resin, we're taking mussel shells that we collect on the beaches in Maine, we crush them up, and every piece is different. We'll put it under the resin and pour the resin on top of it. So sometimes it might be a little more of the opalescent side of the muscle or sometimes it's more blue but that blue after the sun has drenched it is beautiful. After you put that resin on top it's a pretty shade of blue and it has become really popular. We put it in all our pieces. barware, jewelry, men's gifts, anything, and we crush all those shells up on your own," said Janice.Janice has expanded the team to four which is the perfect size for the small-batch collections they make. She has also made processes a bit leaner and has partnered up with many artisans that best fit her brand to showcase their work in their pieces such as photography and art pieces. But the one thing captured from the interview that Kristan found important was Janice's passion for Maine and she will always keep the business of CHART Metalworks in Portland."Maine, New England, you know, has been a part of CHART Metalworks for years. It was going great, but it needed a little love. I chose Maine because the business was here, and it's my happy place. So it's a win-win for Janice. But like I said before, Maine has been fabulous. It's the most beautiful state in the world, in my opinion, the rocky coast. I can't get enough of it. And the people are so supportive and wonderful. Our longest-standing repeat customers are Mainers and yeah, they love the fact that we're here," said Janice.Tune in to this episode to learn more about CHART Metalworks and how Janice has continued its legacy.

She has a fabrication shop on the Jersey Shore, where she grew up called Underground Metalworks; and it didn't all come without a price. The beginning of her welding career wasn't easy as she faced obstacles that she had to overcome; she was overlooked and not welcome in an industry that she loved but she never gave up. Her experience is extraordinary and the good she is doing by ushering young people into welding is commendable. Samantha Pickard brings an international outlook to Strut and a vast understanding of the North American and Australian music and entertainment industries. As a thirty-two-year entertainment industry-veteran she contributes a diverse skill set through her years working as a retail buyer, artist manager, promotions and event manager, GM of an entertainment publishing company, in addition to her 15 years leading the public relations, marketing and event team at Strut Entertainment. The road to Canada began when Samantha took on a three-year role in Radio Promotions at Sydney based, Australian music industry trade magazine, The Music Network (TMN). When TMN partnered with Quebec-based music industry heavyweight, Donald Tarlton (aka Donald K Donald), to launch a Canadian version of TMN, The Canadian Music Network (CMN) in 2001, Samantha landed the role of General Manager and relocated to Toronto. Over a five-year span, CMN's in-house publishing arm took on the publication of the JUNO Award and Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Awards programs. In that time, Samantha also established the Canadian Entertainment Magazine to service the home entertainment business, the Canadian Entertainment Network Awards as well as an independent event-planning firm, Splash Event Management. Over fifteen years ago Samantha re-launched Splash under the name Strut Entertainment, with an eye to offering a degree of personal attention and customized service other, larger companies couldn't. Event planning is still part of the suite of services Strut provides but owing to the vast network of contacts Samantha has developed in the corporate world and entertainment industry, public relations, social media, marketing, and influencer services – for clients in the entertainment, music, and lifestyle industries – are the driving force of the business. Samantha has executed hundreds of public relations campaigns and events including G'Day Toronto for Tourism Australia, the Rolling Stones 50 Years Tour, Walk Off The Earth, the Taylor Swift Speak Now and RED campaigns, Lauv, Commander Chris Hadfield, The Weeknd, Rush, Hanson, Marianas Trench, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, Finneas, Carly Rae Jepsen, Jungle, Girl In Red, Jimmie Allen., Howie D and Nick Carter (Backstreet Boys), Fossil, Dolly Parton, Tim McGraw, The Trews, Dita Von Teese, Cavendish Beach Music Festival, The Glorious Sons, Dan Mangan, The Tea Party, Blue Man Group, So You Think You Can Dance Canada, numerous campaigns for Warner Bros Canada, Gaiam, Universal Music Canada, CIMA, Anthem Entertainment Group, The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), New Balance Canada and Jabra. A former board member of CARAS (The JUNO Awards) and executive board member of CMAO, Samantha is also a sought-after guest speaker and mentor and has working with companies including Toronto's Centennial College, The SOCAN Foundation, Canadian Public Relations Society, MetalWorks, Music Publishers Canada, Rotmans Commerce Women in Business and for the Urban Music Association, she is also a long-term mentor for Canadas' Music incubator and founder of Strut Social.

Gil Moore is my guest, and I chose the word Triumph for two reasons. The first is how he approaches life as an entrepreneur and a renaissance man when it comes to education. It's also a play on words as Gil is the drummer and one of the vocalists in the band, Triumph, who broke into the USA market, but broke up at their peak when they were selling out stadiums, and their records played worldwide. We chat about Triumph's rise to fame and the reasons behind their breakup, and that alone is a great story. What makes this episode so much more is what Gil did with his life before and afterwards. He built METALWORKS, one of the top recording studios in North America, with nearly 200 Gold and Platinum record awards, and Canadian Music Week (CMW) "Studio of the Year" award for a record 17th time. In addition, METALWORKS INSTITUTE has the largest enrollment of any Ontario media arts college, with over 300 full-time students. As you will soon hear, Gil's ideas to revolutionize education, I hope, will move to the top of the policymaker's charts. Jeff Lindsay makes a return appearance to share a story of an aspiring artist who benefited from a collaboration between METALWORKS and RBC.  Side Note and a true confession:  I tried to play music: Guitar, piano, and even trumpet in school. I could read it and appreciate it; what I lacked was musicality. I couldn't feel it or channel it. This inability made me admire those who can play alone or in a group and choose music as their career. For that reason, I love rock documentaries from the first chords, and then for a very few, their talent, effort, and luck lead to selling out stadiums. How do they manage their trajectory? Who controls their destiny, the artist or the industry? Within their group, who has influence or authority over their creative process and their image? What happens after the band breaks up? Have you ever wanted to learn how to build something? Well, Matt Jones has been welding for the last 20 years, learning and sculpture classes that he took in college, as well as working as a professional artist for 10 years with having soul shows throughout the nation as well as group shows internationally along the way. He’s had day jobs doing custom fabrication, building furniture, building sets for museums and amusement parks. Think the Harry Potter world at Universal Studios in Orlando or Carsland over here in a Disneyland. About 10 years ago, he founded Molten Metal Metalworks LLC and has taught welding ever since. He knows he’s fulfilling his purpose when he sees his students smile and they get that ‘a-ha’ and as one student quoted, “they learn how to build things for real.” Matt studied at Dartmouth College earning bachelor’s degrees in both psychology as well as studio art. He then got his masters in fine art from Stanford University and he also went to central New Mexico Community College and got some coursework in welding and electronics. One gem I got in my talk with Matt is this. As an entrepreneur you’ll be making a lot of decisions on the direction of your business and company. If you will recall, we talked a couple of episodes back about how using an outside advisor such as a business coach can help you accelerate those decisions. Another tool you can use, as Matt will describe in our talk, is to be hyper focused on your mission and values. When you’re presented with a business opportunity, and if that opportunity does not fit within your mission and values, it should not be pursued. It will only distract from what you’re trying to do and it will consume your energy and resources. We’ll take a listen and send us your feedback and takeaways at bizmodepodcast.com. Now onto Matt Jones molten Metalworks. Hope you enjoy.

Drawing inspiration from groups like the Eagles and the Avett Brothers, each member of Johnson Crook contributes equally, injecting their unique personalities into the overall sound built on four voices. That special chemistry is heard on their self-titled debut EP released through Coalition Records, to be followed by a full-length album later in 2017. Both encapsulate a whirlwind initial two years of live gigs and recording sessions that began almost immediately after that first encounter.Teaming with acclaimed producer Bill Bell, they began shaping a collection of songs laid down at his home studio and at Metalworks near Toronto. The first taste, the single “Minnedosa,” came out in the summer of 2016, coinciding with the band’s multiple festival appearances. Named after the Crook brothers’ Manitoba hometown, it deftly displays the group’s intention to stand apart from crowded field of contemporary country artists.Other tracks on the EP came about just as naturally. “Canada Heartbreak” was the result of Johnson and Craig taking part in VIA Rail’s Artists On Board series, written as a reflection of their journey. Another highlight, the plaintive ballad “Mr. Nobody,” was given a boost in the studio through the participation of Bell’s close friend Tom Cochrane, whose voice fit in seamlessly.Expect to see Johnson Crook in your town at some point. Every stop brings with it a story that could become a new song, and as a group founded on the principles of equality, Johnson Crook’s creative potential is limitless

There was a strong Canadian presence in Austin for SXSW 2016, and Mike was in the thick of it all. He brought back interviews with the likes of The Trews, Paper Lions, Whitney Rose, and eOne Music Group President Chris Taylor, so we're happy to bring you Part 1 of "the best of the fest." Also, we check in with Giancarlo Gallo of Metalworks Studios, one of our CBC Searchlight Career Booster Partners, for some info on the studio and tips about making the most of your studio recording time.

Kate Dinneen is a master blacksmith from Lawrence, Kansas. She's owned her own business called Hot Flash Metalworks since 2006. Her work can be seen across Kansas as well as on the gates at Shakespeare's Globe Theater in London. Kate has studied and mentored with blacksmiths internationally and is currently serving as a Global Assistant to a World War I memorial being designed at an event next year in Ypres, Belgium. What We Talked About Kate's family came from Ireland many generations ago so she has a connection to the British Isles. She travels to the UK regularly to study and work there. One of Kate's biggest blacksmith influences is Uri Hofi. She has spent time learning from him in Israel. Two of his students taught her to strike in an ergonomic way that protects the body and allows her to strike much longer. Early in her career, Kate was involved in a new gate design at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London where she created one of the featured design elements. Kate stays very busy at Hot Flash Metalworks and gets most of her work through word of mouth. She estimates that 60% of her work she gets to design herself and about 40% is based on someone else's idea. She does charge a design fee and feels that it's better to charge it up front rather than bundling it in with the entire project cost. Her ideal pay structure would be to charge in three equal payments at beginning, middle and end, but she admits it's very hard to know final costs and the length of each project. Kate does sporadically offer some training out of her shop, mostly to beginners. She also teaches a group of “at risk” kids through a local non-profit. “They teach basic job skills through the arts and I'm in charge of the metals component of it,” she says. They worked on spot welding and sheet metal work last semester and next semester they will try forging. Kate has been appointed Global Assistant to a blacksmithing event in Ypres, Belgium in September 2016. Ypres is a battle site from World War I, which suffered mass casualties and heavy destruction. A cenotaph (a memorial to honor the dead who are buried elsewhere) will be designed and built. The design competition for the 13 panels that will surround the cenotaph is still open until January. Find info at ypres2016.com. Each panel will be 28” x 29” and should contain a design element that is meaningful to WWI. The cenotaph will also include 13 panels that represent all the countries that fought at the site. Those are being designed by invited blacksmiths from each country.
