The 9th chapter takes the understanding of the divine to a higher level, revealing the true nature of the Supreme Reality and the means to attain it through unwavering devotion and selfless service. This chapter of Bhagavad-gītā is called the king of education because it is the essence of all the philosophies explained until now. In this chapter, Lord Krishna reveals the secret of true devotion and the means to realize the ultimate truth. He explains that the imperishable Brahman, the absolute reality, is the source of all that is manifest and unmanifest in this vast universe. It is the eternal, immutable essence that resides within the heart of every being, yet remains untouched by the limitations of material existence. With compassion and clarity, the Lord guides Arjuna, and all seekers of truth, to understand the nature of this supreme reality and the way to attain it. He again emphasizes the importance of unwavering devotion, selfless service, and the cultivation of spiritual knowledge as the keys to unlocking the door to liberation. The verses in this chapter guide the sincere seeker through the maze of worldly illusions and attachments. They reveal the path of surrender, where one offers their entire being to the Divine, freeing themselves from the shackles of ego and desire. The 9th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, while building upon the themes introduced in the 8th chapter, offers a deeper and more expansive understanding of the Supreme Reality and the path to attain it. In the 8th chapter, Lord Krishna elaborates on the concept of the imperishable Brahman, the eternal and immutable essence that underlies all existence. He explains the process of transcending the cycle of birth and death through the practice of steadfast meditation and devotion. The chapter emphasizes the importance of focusing one's mind on the Supreme at the time of death, as a means to attain moksha, or liberation. Brahman's manifestation: While the 8th chapter speaks of Brahman as the imperishable reality, the 9th chapter expounds on how this Supreme Reality manifests itself in the entire cosmos, both as the unmanifest source and the manifest creation. Devotion and surrender: The 9th chapter places a greater emphasis on the path of devotion (bhakti) and complete surrender (sharanagati) to the Divine as the most direct and effective means to attain moksha. Divine grace: The 9th chapter highlights the importance of Divine grace, which can be attained through unwavering devotion and selfless action. It emphasizes that the Lord resides within the hearts of all beings and can be realized through sincere devotion. Universal presence: The 9th chapter expands on the concept of the Divine's all-pervasive presence, stating that the Lord is the source, sustainer, and ultimate goal of all beings and all aspects of existence. The 9th chapter builds upon the foundation laid in the 8th chapter, offering a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the Supreme Reality, the means to attain it, and the importance of devotion, surrender, and Divine grace in the journey towards self-realization and liberation. As we delve into the profound wisdom of this chapter, may our hearts be filled with reverence and our minds illuminated with the light of understanding. May we find the courage to transcend our limitations and embrace the eternal truth that resides within us, leading us to the ultimate goal of self-realization and everlasting peace. In chapters 2 through 6, Krishna shared the knowledge of matter and spirit which was confidential (guhya). In chapters 7 and 8 He shared the knowledge of bhakti, which was more confidential (guhyatara). In chapter 9, Shri Krishna shares the knowledge of kevala-bhakti which is most confidential (guhyatama). He describes the majestic aspect of Himself (aiśvarya ) and the excellence of a pure devotee. In this chapter, Lord Shri Krishna offers Arjuna the raja-vidya and raja-guhyam, the most exalted knowledge and secret, revealing truths profound and purifying (pavitram), transcending all other forms of wisdom. Krishna emphasizes that this wisdom, embodying the highest purity and capable of leading to direct realization (pratyaksavagamam), is accessible to those devoid of asuya (jealousy or malice), emphasizing that a simple and pure heart free from malice and jealousy is essential for grasping such profound spiritual truths. Krishna's teachings are not just intellectual knowledge (jñānam) but include experiential understanding (vijñāna), emphasizing the importance of living and experiencing the truths personally. This knowledge, deeply rooted in dharma (righteousness), is not only the key to liberation (mokṣa) from all that is inauspicious (aśubhāt) but is also marked by its simplicity (susukham) in practice, and its eternal nature (avyayam), offering a path that is joyous and infinitely rewarding. Key points of comparison between the two chapters:raja-vidya and raja-guhyam

Excerpts taken from the book by Cioara, "The Supreme Reality" - translated by Petrica Verdes. Ilie Cioara (1916 - 2004) was an enlightened mystic who did not belong to any lineage. He is unique in a way, in the sense that he lived in almost complete isolation, in Romania, Eastern Europe in a communist country, completely oblivious of nonduality, Zen, etc. Originally a Christian mystic, he practised a mantra for over 20 years. One day, he felt an intuitive impulse to drop the mantra, and just practice the silence of the mind, by listening to the noises on the street, in the now. After following this practice for a few years, one morning, as he was waking up from his sleep, he realised the veils had completely dropped. His description of meditation is fresh and devoid of any tradition and jargon.
This sermon was preached by Jared Osborne on April 17, 2023 and is part 5 of the series through Colossians. We all have to make decisions to do things that don't sound fun and definitely aren't easy. When you think about the life of a Christian, it doesn't sound fun or easy when we are told we have to die to be one. This isn't a physical death, but one that is a complete termination of the former way of life. Jesus doesn't fix your life. He gives you a completely new one. For the new one to live, the other must die. But this isn't easy. It takes conscious effort. Jesus tells us that we will have to die daily. Choosing righteousness over selfishness goes against our sinful nature. Choosing others over me is not the normal way we operate. It's a tall order, but it's the standard for the Christian. In order to live for Christ, you must die to yourself. "For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God." -Colossians 3:3This is the Supreme Reality of the Christian faith. Are you ready to follow Jesus? Then it's time to die.

In this episode, The Bearded Mystic Podcast discusses the 4th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically verses 9 - 12. Sri Krishna instructs us that we must accept Krishna's divine birth and understand the purpose. If we do then we attain Him, as the Supreme atma when we die and not be in the cycle of birth and death. Sri Krishna explains that those that get over desires, fear and anger, who focus on the Supreme, are completely purified through knowledge and simple living, they attain the same Brahman, which is Krishna's own divine nature. Whatever approach we take with Sri Krishna, he reciprocates this. The importance of this verse is to highlight that even if people do now want to have liberation, there is still something they can attain. But it will not be Krishna's Supreme Reality, which is Brahman. But it will be fulfilled in this transactional reality, in this world.Translation used: The Bhagavad Gita Comes Alive: A Radical Translation by Jeffrey Armstrong Available here on AmazonIf you would like to dwell deeper in the Bhagavad Gita, I recommend Swami Gambhirananda's translation with Adi Shankara ji's commentary: Available here on AmazonI hope you enjoyed listening to the 31st episode of the Thoughts on The Bhagavad Gita and if you are interested in listening to more episodes like this on further chapters and verses, or on Non-Duality, or you want to learn more about the wisdom of the Mystics please follow/subscribe to this Podcast. Please rate and write a review for this Podcast on https://www.thebeardedmysticpodcast.com/reviews/new/ it will be greatly appreciated.New episodes will be available every Sunday. If you would like to attend a free weekly meditation with me, join my Whatsapp group:https://chat.whatsapp.com/DcdnuDMeRnW53E0seVp28bSubscribe to the free monthly The Bearded Mystic Newsletter: http://thebeardedmysticpodcast.substack.comSubscribe to The Bearded Mystic Podcast Communityhttps://www.patreon.com/thebeardedmysticpodcastYou can find links to Live Streams, Podcast, Videos etc: https://linktr.ee/thebeardedmysticpodcastYou can follow me and contact me on social media:Website: https://www.thebeardedmysticpodcast.com/TikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMdk3HPJh/Discord: https://discord.gg/4DbureZw8yInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thebeardedmysticpodcast/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheBeardedMysticPodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/bearded_mysticFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Bearded-Mystic-PodcastSupport the show
Now Krishna goes on to explain some esoteric aspects to Arjuna. “Brahman is the Supreme Reality, beyond destruction; one's self is Adhyatma; worldly activities are Karma; the ever-changing physical manifestation is Adhibhuta; the Universal Godly form presiding over celestial entities is Adhidaiva. And I, dwelling in every being, am Adhiyajna, the Lord of Sacrifices! Those remembering Me, the Supreme Divinity, while dying- the shedding of the body- are sure to come to Me, but that remembering is possible only through constant contemplation on Me. So, Oh Arjuna, always surrender your mind and intellect to Me, and fight the war; you would definitely reach me! God is of an inconceivably divine form, most ancient, omniscient, subtlest, brightest, beyond the darkness of ignorance and support-incarnate. The one who, with Yog practice, fixes the life-force between the eyebrows and remembers the Lord at death attains Him, for certain. Restraining the bodily gates, fixing the mind to the heart and drawing the life-breath to head, establish in Yogic concentration to enter the divine. Once they attain Me, the great souls are beyond further rebirth in this miserable, transient world. Brahma's every day and night lasts a thousand 4-epochs cycle. All lives emanate at this daybreak from an un-manifest source and return there at nightfall. Innumerable cycles of such births, deaths and rebirths keep on happening. But there is also an eternal dimension, transcendental to this creation, which is My Supreme Abode, reaching which none returns to the realm of this mortal world. Though the Supreme pervades all, and all beings reside in Him, devotion is the only way to know Him. There are ways of dying, of which one leads to liberation and the other to rebirth. Those who realize Brahman, the Supreme and depart during the Sun's 6-monthly Northern course, Moon's bright fortnight and in bright-day time, reach the no-return destination; whereas those practising Vedic rituals, and pass away during the Sun's Southern course, Moon's dark fortnight, and night, reach celestial abodes, enjoy pleasures, and are back again on earth. Thus light takes one to liberation and darkness, to rebirth. So, be in Yog, in union with the Almighty, always. The Yogis, who are aware of this secret, reach My Supreme Abode!” If you would like to find out more about your chart or have a question about astrology you would love the answer to, please do connect with us at www.astroved.com Follow AstroVed on IG, Twitter, and FB @AstroVed
Life Answers: A Complete Audiobook Reading of Sri Nisargadatta Maharajah's I AM THAT
“Watch your thoughts as you watch the street traffic. People come and go; you register without response. It may not be easy in the beginning, but with some practice you will find that your mind can function on many levels at the same time and you can be aware of them all. It is only when you have a vested interest in any particular level, that your attention gets caught in it and you black out on other levels. Even then the work on the blacked out levels goes on, outside the field of consciousness. Do not struggle with your memories and thoughts; try only to include in your field of attention the other, more important questions, like 'Who am l?' 'How did I happen to be born?' 'Whence this universe around me?'. 'What is real and what is momentary?' "No memory will persist, if you lose interest in it, it is the emotional link that perpetuates the bondage. You are always seeking pleasure, avoiding pain, always after happiness and peace. Don't you see that it is your very search for happiness that makes you feel miserable? Try the other way: indifferent to pain and pleasure, neither asking, nor refusing, give all your attention to the level on which 'I am' is timelessly present. Soon you will realise that peace and happiness are in your very nature and it is only seeking them through some particular channels, that disturbs. Avoid the disturbance, that is all. To seek there is no need; you would not seek what you already have. You yourself are God, the Supreme Reality. To begin with, trust me, trust the Teacher. It enables you to make the first step — and then your trust is justified by your own experience. In every walk of life initial trust is essential; without it little can be done. Every undertaking is an act of faith. Even your daily bread you eat on trust! By remembering what I told you you will achieve everything. I am telling you again: You are the all-pervading, all transcending reality. Behave accordingly: think, feel and act in harmony with the whole and the actual experience of what I say will dawn upon you in no time. No effort is needed. Have faith and act on it. Please see that I want nothing from you. It is in your own interest that l speak, because above all you love yourself, you want yourself secure and happy. Don't be ashamed of it, don't deny it. It is natural and good to love oneself. Only you should know what exactly do you love. It is not the body that you love, it is Life —perceiving, feeling, thinking, doing, loving, striving, creating. It is that Life you love, which is you, which is all. realise it in its totality, beyond all divisions and limitations, and all your desires will merge in it, for the greater contains the smaller. Therefore find yourself, for in finding that you find all. Everybody is glad to be. But few know the fullness of it. You come to know by dwelling in your mind on 'I am', 'I know', 'I love' — with the will of reaching the deepest meaning of these words.”
This is an ancient Vedic prayer dedicated to Lord Ganesha. It is found in the Ganapati Upanishad. When chanted regularly, it can remove mental instability, fears, self-doubt, and inability to focus on anything. It is recommended for those with fickle or unstable minds. When we recite it, it is like practicing the highest kind of meditation on the Supreme Reality represented by Ganesha. It eliminates physical and mental strife, negativity, etc., and brings peace, prosperity, and auspiciousness. It can benefit those who have malefic planets like Rahu, Ketu, and Shani, along with the Moon in their horoscope and those who suffer from madness, paranoia, and delusions. Students who are unable to concentrate on studies can also benefit by chanting it. -8th chapter: verses 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27-The lecture was given by Swami Tattwamayananda on May 21, 2021.-20th and 21st verse: “Beyond this Avyakta (unmanifested) and Vyakta (manifested), which belong to the realm of the relative, there is the one Absolute Reality which is different from the unmanifested state of the relative – it is Aksharam (imperishable) and it is Sanatana (eternal). Those who realize their spiritual identity with this Supreme Reality, they get liberation from this cyclic rotation”-22nd verse: “This Supreme Reality is the source of everything. It is our true nature and is attainable through pure devotion.”-One method of developing this devotion is to give a spiritual orientation to our natural human impulses, such as our love for friends and parents. Under Navadha Bhakti, one follows nine disciplines: Sravanam (Hearing about God ), Kirtanam (Chanting His Name and Glory), Vishnu smaranam (Remembering Him), Pada sevanam (Serving His Lotus Feet), Archanam (Worshipping Him), Vandanam (Prostrating before Him), Dasyam (Being His Servant), Sakhyam (Befriending Him), and Atma Nivedanam (Offering Oneself to Him).-Prapatti is the highest state of a devotee of God. Prapatti means complete surrender and is composed of the following characteristics. (1) Always having a positive outlook in life, full of sattvic qualities such as serenity, wisdom, compassion, and broad mindedness. (2) Rejecting all the opposing qualities such as skepticism and self-doubt. (3) Strong faith that God will protect me. (4) Total self-surrender.-23rd verse: “I am going to tell you about the two spiritual paths that Yogis take upon departing from this body, and attain non-return or return.”-24th verse: “Yogis of the highest type follow the bright path of Shuklagati or Devayana. It is the path of fire, flame, daytime, the bright fortnight, and the six months of the northern passage of the sun - departing by this path the knowers of Brahman attain Brahman.-The Yogis who follow the path of Shuklagati are devoted to a higher spiritual ideal. They lead a pure life and are free from selfish desires. To them every action is a spiritual offering. They have dedicated their life to the realization of Brahman, and they practice seeing the same divine principle everywhere. Taking this path, they gradually realize Brahman and do not come back again to Samsara.-The Yogis taking the path of Shuklagati are less evolved compared to the Jivan-muktas, who are liberated while living in this world.-Such a Yogi is able to leave the body with full awareness. His focus is between the eyebrows, from where a light comes and lights up the path that takes him through different stages, which are guarded by different deities and who take care of him. The whole journey is lighted up by the power of his spiritual sadhana until he merges with Brahman.-25th verse: “Yogis whose spiritual practices are driven by a motive, follow the dark path of Krishnagati or Pitrayana. It is the path of smoke, nighttime, dark fortnight, and the six months of the southern passage of the sun – departing by this path, the Yogi reaches a higher abode, but returns to Samsara.”-The message of the 24th and 25th verses is twofold. First, it inspires us to lead a good life. Second, it tells us that we are independent travelers. We came alone and will go back alone.-Chandogya Upanishad describes the scenario of a dying person. First, the function of speech becomes quiet and merges in the mind. Next, other sense faculties merge in the mind. Next, mind merges in mukhya prana. Next, mukhya prana merges in the jeeva. Then, the individual self merges into the five elements. Samskaras that are accumulated in the Antahkarana, constitute the subtle body - they are preserved and transmigrate, as the subtle body takes a long journey. When we are born again, we are born with these accumulated samskaras.-There is a third category of spiritual seekers who do not have a higher spiritual ideal and keep on doing wrong things. They take a descent and come down the ladder of evolution. They may be born in the animal or insect world.-26th verse: “These are two paths - one bright and the other dark. One takes the Yogi beyond the transmigratory cycle. The other keeps him confined to the transmigratory cycle.”-27th verse: “A Yogi who knows the secrets of these two paths, is not deluded. Therefore, we should always be steadfast in Yoga, staying linked to a higher spiritual ideal.”-Even if the Yogi is not in the path of Shuklagati, he does not feel lost. He feels secure. He knows that he will be reborn in a family where he can continue his spiritual journey.-One should not expect to reach the highest spiritual goal immediately. Even if noble deeds are done with desires, they produce results that are deposited as a spiritual bank balance. These results are Adhrishtam (not visible) and Apoorvam (did not exist before the activity). These results are never lost.-Spiritual qualities are not inseparably connected to family. One of the greatest devotees, Prahlada, was born to a demon, Hiranyakashipu.
-8th chapter: verses 17, 18, 19, 20, 21-The lecture was given by Swami Tattwamayananda on May 14, 2021.-17th verse deals with the Hindu concept of Cosmogony, according to which cosmic movement is in rhythmic cycles.-According to Yuga theory, there are four Yugas - Satya, Dvapara, Treta and Kali Yuga. Satya Yuga is 1 million and 28,000 years. Treta Yuga is 1 million and 3,000 years. Dwapara Yuga is 854,000 years. Kali Yuga is 429,000 years. These four Yugas together constitute a Mahayuga, and 1000 Mahayugas constitute a Kalpa. One full day and night of Brahma is equal to 2000 yugas. At Pralaya, these four Yugas get dissolved.-The theme of verses 17-21 is the following. Cyclicism applies to both human life and the cosmos. Just as the tree exists in a seed in an involved (unmanifested) state, similarly, the cosmos comes from a state of non-manifestation to a state of manifestation. After many years, it goes back to its unmanifested state. After trillions of years, manifestation begins again. This goes on in cycles. The manifested (Vyakta) and unmanifested (Avyakta) belong to the realm of the relative. Beyond these, there is the unmanifested reality that is Aksharam (imperishable) and Sanatana (eternal).-There are three schools of thought on cause-effect relationship in Indian philosophy. According to Sanghatavada, things come into existence when different parts come together. For example, a chair comes into existence by combining several parts. According to Arambhavada, every effect is a new creation, and the effect does not pre-exist in the cause (Asatkaryavada). For example, a cloth made of threads has a new existence that is different from the threads. According to Vedanta and Bhagavad Gita, the effect pre-exists in the cause (Satkaryavada). For example, the cloth pre-exists in the thread – it just gets a new name and form.-Our life begins long before we are born, and our life will continue long after we are dead. Life is only a transition. We continue going through these revolving cycles, until we realize the supreme truth, that we are one with the supreme reality that does not belong to the realm of the relative.-17th and 18th verses: “The whole cosmos exists in two states – the undifferentiated (Avyakta) and differentiated (Vyakta) – both these states belong to the relative. The differentiated state will go back to the undifferentiated state. When the day of Brahma begins, creation begins. When the day of Brahma ends, dissolution takes place.”-The day of Brahma represents the cosmic mind. Creation is symbolically compared to the dawn of the cosmic mind. Dissolution of the created universe corresponds to the sunset of the cosmic mind.-The universe has two dimensions – Vyakta and Avyakta. The earth evolved into a state (Vyakta) where living conditions became appropriate for living creatures to evolve and survive. These living conditions may disappear after millions of years - the earth will then merge back to its unmanifested state (Avyakta).-19th verse: “The same variety of different beings that existed in the preceding day of Brahma, they merge when the night comes. And then they manifest again at daybreak – the morning of Brahma’s day.”-20th and 21st verse: “Beyond this Avyakta (unmanifested) and Vyakta (manifested), which belong to the realm of the relative, there is the one Absolute Reality which is different from the unmanifested state of the relative – it is Aksharam (imperishable) and it is Sanatana (eternal). Those who realize their spiritual identity with this Supreme Reality, they get liberation from this cyclic rotation”-Everything moves in cycles – both in human life and in the cosmos. In human life, there is a cause and effect link between our lives. When a person dies, the senses of perception and action disappear, but the samskaras transmigrate in seed form, and manifest in the next life. At the Cosmic level, from the Avyakta state, the Vyakta state comes. The same Vyakta state later goes back to the Avyakta state. The causal dimension is Avyakta. The effect dimension is Vyakta.-When we are in the realm of the relative, we think that time and space are eternal. Only when we get out of the relative, we realize that time and space are relative. With spiritual practices, we can transcend the relative.-Silence is the language of the highest spiritual experience. Sri Ramakrishna said that one has to come down several steps from the highest state of samadhi to Omkara, then several steps down to Gayatri, and then several steps down to Vedas. This means that the highest truth can only be experienced – even Omkara does not explain this highest truth.-When we evolve in spiritual life our questions cease to be questions. They self-destruct.
-8th chapter: verses 7, 8, 9-This lecture was given by Swami Tattwamayananda on April 23, 2021.-7th verse: “Constantly remember Me and fight. Then you shall attain Me.”-Fight here refers to the battle with our own lower self. Lord Krishna says that we should combine contemplation and action, and do our everyday secular duties with a higher ideal in mind. By doing so, we spiritualize the secular.-Lord Krishna chose Arjuna over Yudhishthira and other Pandavas because Arjuna was a man of action, who was eager to learn, and who would put into practice what he learnt.-Lord Krishna asks Arjuna to always think and contemplate on a higher ideal – all the time, in every thought, word and deed. By doing so, he would have peace of mind and be a source of harmony to those around him.-8th verse: “With constant practice and continued effort, one who thinks of the Supreme Being, attains Him.”-In spiritual life, we may encounter two types of problems. First – when we follow an ideal and do not succeed, we may get disappointed. Second – we may develop a liking for the negative, like a camel who enjoys eating thorny bushes despite bleeding in the process.-Continued effort is necessary. As we continue our effort, the resistance slowly disappears, and we are able to follow the higher ideal.-Shankaracharya says in his commentary that we should read spiritual books, understand the teachings of the great sages, contemplate on them, and bring this contemplation to every action in daily life.-Ramanuja says in his commentary that we should do our duty in a way that it does not violate ethical principles, and at the same time contemplate on a higher ideal.-Once a person succeeds in spiritualizing the secular, by combining action and contemplation, his character begins to reflect a sense of contentment. He is able to face difficulties of life with a smile.-9th verse: “The one who meditates on this Supreme Reality – who is omniscient (Kavi), ancient, the ruler, smaller than the atom, the sustainer, self-luminous and beyond the darkness of Maya.”-The word “kavi” is used to imply omniscient. A great poet is able to see far into things and bring out the grandeur of the subject he is writing on. This ability to see beyond the surface of things is an expression of the divine.-One great example is from the life of Valmiki, who was a sage and a poet. Once he was watching two birds playing on a tree. Suddenly, one of the birds fell after being short by a hunter’s arrow. At that moment, Valmiki’s heart was filled with the charm of the innocent bird, the cruelty of the hunter and the agony of the surviving bird. He uttered a profound verse: “O’ hunter – you will not get respect; you will not get existence. You also will perish. For you have killed this innocent, unsuspecting bird.”-We cannot play diplomacy with our own mind at the time of death. The dominant thought at the time of death is linked to what ideas dominated one’s life. If one practices spiritual disciplines during their life, then at the time of death, then can think of something higher, transcendental.-There are two ways of looking upon God. One is through the lens of the world – in this scenario, we won’t have peace of mind. Another way is to see the world through the eyes of God – then we see the world as a fleeting phenomenon belonging to time and subject to change; then we can practice equilibrium of mind, and the world won’t disturb us.
Talk 140 : Verses 511-516 The disciple continues to expound on his state of realisation, having gone beyond his intellectual realm of thoughts and judgements. He acknowledges the countless modifications in Prakriti, knowing himself to be beyond all ,while negating what He is not. He declares himself to be the non dual substratum and illuminer of the entire gamut of names, forms and multiplicity, as the Supreme Reality. Through a series of pointers he indicates his state of Godhood- sat, chit, akhanda ananda, devoid of activity, parts or modifications, the non dual Brahman. Talk 112 - Verses 395-399 Shankaracharya ji reiterates that, as much as one may study or read the scriptures, the truth is that Brahman is our real nature and Brahman alone pervades everywhere. Masters who have realised this have become Brahman and this is the essence of all the shastras. The biggest obstacle to our experience of this state of Brahman is our body identification. Dis-identify from this impure bag of filth with all its modifications to know the Supreme Reality in the state of nirvikalpa samadhi. "Stava cintāmaṇi is the work of Bhaṭṭanārāyaṇa. Bhaṭṭanārāyaṇa is one of the most important Shaivite masters. Stava cintāmaṇi means stava - hymns, cintāmaṇi - jewel. Cintāmaṇī jewel is that kind of jewel, i.e. whatever you wish it will come. It is the bestower of all your boons, all your desires. All your desires are fulfilled by that cintāmaṇi; that jewel. And this is the jewelry of that cintāmaṇi of hymns to Lord Śiva. It purifies all your desires and wishes." ~Swami Lakshmanjoo Devotional hymns have always held an important place in the history of the Monistic teachings of Kashmir Shaivism. The recitation of such devotional hymns is a common part of the daily spiritual practice for many Shaiva aspirants. Stava Cintāmaṇi, The Magical Jewel of Devotion in Kashmir Shaivism, is a sublime and unique hymn addressed to Lord Shiva, whom the author, Bhaṭṭa Nārāyaṇa, clearly holds as the Supreme Reality. Though highly devotional, these hymns are at the same time practical and deeply philosophical. The Sanskrit text of the Stava Cintāmaṇi with Kṣemarāja’s commentary was first published in the Kashmir Series of Texts and Studies, Volume X, in Kashmir (1918). This was the text used by Swami Lakshmanjoo in his translation and commentary of this present publication. Swamiji’s love for devotional hymns is evidenced by the fact that he translated and commented upon the Stava Cintāmaṇi on three occasions. "He is the Light of all Darkness, all Ignorance of Light. All absence of Light and Presence of Light Have come out from that Light." Swami Lakshmanjoo https://www.lakshmanjooacademy.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/StavaCintamani_v3.mp3 Audio 1 (17:08) प्रसरद्विन्दुनादाय शुद्धामृतमयात्मने । नमोऽनन्तप्रकाशाय शंकरक्षीरसिन्धवे ॥३॥ prasaradbindunādāya śuddhāmṛtamayātmane / namo’nantaprakāśāya śaṅkarakṣīrasindhave //3// I bow to that Śaṅkara,3 who is just like the ocean of milk, a milk ocean. I bow to that Śaṅkara who is just like a milk ocean, a vast milk ocean, and prasarat bindu nādāya, where there are flows, two-fold flows, of bindu and nāda. Bindu is prakāśa and nāda is [vimarśa].4 Bindu is I-consciousness; nāda is to observe I-consciousness.5 Consciousness is bindu; “I am consciousness, I am God consciousness,” this is nāda. For instance, this prakāśa of sūrya (sun), the prakāśa of the light of the moon, [the prakāśa of] the light of fire, it is bindu, but there is no nāda in it, there is no understanding power of that prakāśa. There is prakāśa in the sun, but [the sun] does not know that, “I am prakāśa.” He is just a [star].6 He does not understand that, “I am filled with this prakāśa.” When there is understanding power, the understanding that, “I am this prakāśa,” that is nāda. Bindu and nāda are both found in God consciousness. In other lights, only bindu is found, not nāda. Nāda is understanding. Fire is burning but it does not know that, “I am burning.” In the same way, the light of the moon, the light of the sun, they are absolutely unaware of their nature. So there must be, there is, bindu and nāda both in God consciousness. In the same way, prakāśa and vimarśa is bindu and nāda according to the śāmbhava state. According to śāktopāya, jñāna and kriyā (knowledge and action) will be bindu and nāda. According to āṇavopāya, breathing in and breathing out, in-going breath and out-coming breath, will be bindu and nāda.7 [Bindu and nāda are] inhaling and exhaling from the āṇavopāya viewpoint, and knowledge and action from śāktopāya, and prakāśa and vimarśa from śāmbhavopāya.8 You understand? It is very easy. Prasarat bindu nādāya, so I bow to that Lord Śiva who is filled with bindu and nāda. The flows of prakāśa and vimarśa [are] always there according to the śāmbhava state, according to the śākta state, and according to the āṇava state. [In the] āṇava state, what is bindu and nāda?

The Supreme Being (1260.1) 115:0.1 WITH God the Father, sonship is the great relationship. With God the Supreme, achievement is the prerequisite to status — one must do something as well as be something. 1. Relativity of Concept Frames (1260.2) 115:1.1 Partial, incomplete, and evolving intellects would be helpless in the master universe, would be unable to form the first rational thought pattern, were it not for the innate ability of all mind, high or low, to form a universe frame in which to think. If mind cannot fathom conclusions, if it cannot penetrate to true origins, then will such mind unfailingly postulate conclusions and invent origins that it may have a means of logical thought within the frame of these mind-created postulates. And while such universe frames for creature thought are indispensable to rational intellectual operations, they are, without exception, erroneous to a greater or lesser degree. (1260.3) 115:1.2 Conceptual frames of the universe are only relatively true; they are serviceable scaffolding which must eventually give way before the expansions of enlarging cosmic comprehension. The understandings of truth, beauty, and goodness, morality, ethics, duty, love, divinity, origin, existence, purpose, destiny, time, space, even Deity, are only relatively true. God is much, much more than a Father, but the Father is man’s highest concept of God; nonetheless, the Father-Son portrayal of Creator-creature relationship will be augmented by those supermortal conceptions of Deity which will be attained in Orvonton, in Havona, and on Paradise. Man must think in a mortal universe frame, but that does not mean that he cannot envision other and higher frames within which thought can take place. (1260.4) 115:1.3 In order to facilitate mortal comprehension of the universe of universes, the diverse levels of cosmic reality have been designated as finite, absonite, and absolute. Of these only the absolute is unqualifiedly eternal, truly existential. Absonites and finites are derivatives, modifications, qualifications, and attenuations of the original and primordial absolute reality of infinity. (1260.5) 115:1.4 The realms of the finite exist by virtue of the eternal purpose of God. Finite creatures, high and low, may propound theories, and have done so, as to the necessity of the finite in the cosmic economy, but in the last analysis it exists because God so willed. The universe cannot be explained, neither can a finite creature offer a rational reason for his own individual existence without appealing to the prior acts and pre-existent volition of ancestral beings, Creators or procreators. 2. The Absolute Basis for Supremacy (1261.1) 115:2.1 From the existential standpoint, nothing new can happen throughout the galaxies, for the completion of infinity inherent in the I AM is eternally present in the seven Absolutes, is functionally associated in the triunities, and is transmitively associated in the triodities. But the fact that infinity is thus existentially present in these absolute associations in no way makes it impossible to realize new cosmic experientials. From a finite creature’s viewpoint, infinity contains much that is potential, much that is on the order of a future possibility rather than a present actuality. (1261.2) 115:2.2 Value is a unique element in universe reality. We do not comprehend how the value of anything infinite and divine could possibly be increased. But we discover that meanings can be modified if not augmented even in the relations of infinite Deity. To the experiential universes even divine values are increased as actualities by enlarged comprehension of reality meanings. (1261.3) 115:2.3 The entire scheme of universal creation and evolution on all experiencing levels is apparently a matter of the conversion of potentialities into actualities; and this transmutation has to do equally with the realms of space potency, mind potency, and spirit potency. (1261.4) 115:2.4 The apparent method whereby the possibilities of the cosmos are brought into actual existence varies from level to level, being experiential evolution in the finite and experiential eventuation in the absonite. Existential infinity is indeed unqualified in all-inclusiveness, and this very all-inclusiveness must, perforce, encompass even the possibility for evolutionary finite experiencing. And the possibility for such experiential growth becomes a universe actuality through triodity relationships impinging upon and in the Supreme. 3. Original, Actual, and Potential (1261.5) 115:3.1 The absolute cosmos is conceptually without limit; to define the extent and nature of this primal reality is to place qualifications upon infinity and to attenuate the pure concept of eternity. The idea of the infinite-eternal, the eternal-infinite, is unqualified in extent and absolute in fact. There is no language in the past, present, or future of Urantia adequate to express the reality of infinity or the infinity of reality. Man, a finite creature in an infinite cosmos, must content himself with distorted reflections and attenuated conceptions of that limitless, boundless, never-beginning, never-ending existence the comprehension of which is really beyond his ability. (1261.6) 115:3.2 Mind can never hope to grasp the concept of an Absolute without attempting first to break the unity of such a reality. Mind is unifying of all divergencies, but in the very absence of such divergencies, mind finds no basis upon which to attempt to formulate understanding concepts. (1261.7) 115:3.3 The primordial stasis of infinity requires segmentation prior to human attempts at comprehension. There is a unity in infinity which has been expressed in these papers as the I AM — the premier postulate of the creature mind. But never can a creature understand how it is that this unity becomes duality, triunity, and diversity while yet remaining an unqualified unity. Man encounters a similar problem when he pauses to contemplate the undivided Deity of Trinity alongside the plural personalization of God. (1262.1) 115:3.4 It is only man’s distance from infinity that causes this concept to be expressed as one word. While infinity is on the one hand UNITY, on the other it is DIVERSITY without end or limit. Infinity, as it is observed by finite intelligences, is the maximum paradox of creature philosophy and finite metaphysics. Though man’s spiritual nature reaches up in the worship experience to the Father who is infinite, man’s intellectual comprehension capacity is exhausted by the maximum conception of the Supreme Being. Beyond the Supreme, concepts are increasingly names; less and less are they true designations of reality; more and more do they become the creature’s projection of finite understanding toward the superfinite. (1262.2) 115:3.5 One basic conception of the absolute level involves a postulate of three phases: (1262.3) 115:3.6 1. The Original. The unqualified concept of the First Source and Center, that source manifestation of the I AM from which all reality takes origin. (1262.4) 115:3.7 2. The Actual. The union of the three Absolutes of actuality, the Second, Third, and Paradise Sources and Centers. This triodity of the Eternal Son, the Infinite Spirit, and the Paradise Isle constitutes the actual revelation of the originality of the First Source and Center. (1262.5) 115:3.8 3. The Potential. The union of the three Absolutes of potentiality, the Deity, Unqualified, and Universal Absolutes. This triodity of existential potentiality constitutes the potential revelation of the originality of the First Source and Center. (1262.6) 115:3.9 The interassociation of the Original, the Actual, and the Potential yields the tensions within infinity which result in the possibility for all universe growth; and growth is the nature of the Sevenfold, the Supreme, and the Ultimate. (1262.7) 115:3.10 In the association of the Deity, Universal, and Unqualified Absolutes, potentiality is absolute while actuality is emergent; in the association of the Second, Third, and Paradise Sources and Centers, actuality is absolute while potentiality is emergent; in the originality of the First Source and Center, we cannot say that either actuality or potentiality is either existent or emergent — the Father is. (1262.8) 115:3.11 From the time viewpoint, the Actual is that which was and is; the Potential is that which is becoming and will be; the Original is that which is. From the eternity viewpoint, the differences between the Original, the Actual, and the Potential are not thus apparent. These triune qualities are not so distinguished on Paradise-eternity levels. In eternity all is — only has all not yet been revealed in time and space. (1262.9) 115:3.12 From a creature’s viewpoint, actuality is substance, potentiality is capacity. Actuality exists centermost and expands therefrom into peripheral infinity; potentiality comes inward from the infinity periphery and converges at the center of all things. Originality is that which first causes and then balances the dual motions of the cycle of reality metamorphosis from potentials to actuals and the potentializing of existing actuals. (1262.10) 115:3.13 The three Absolutes of potentiality are operative on the purely eternal level of the cosmos, hence never function as such on subabsolute levels. On the descending levels of reality the triodity of potentiality is manifest with the Ultimate and upon the Supreme. The potential may fail to time-actualize with respect to a part on some subabsolute level, but never in the aggregate. The will of God does ultimately prevail, not always concerning the individual but invariably concerning the total. (1263.1) 115:3.14 It is in the triodity of actuality that the existents of the cosmos have their center; be it spirit, mind, or energy, all center in this association of the Son, the Spirit, and Paradise. The personality of the spirit Son is the master pattern for all personality throughout all universes. The substance of the Paradise Isle is the master pattern of which Havona is a perfect, and the superuniverses are a perfecting, revelation. The Conjoint Actor is at one and the same time the mind activation of cosmic energy, the conceptualization of spirit purpose, and the integration of the mathematical causes and effects of the material levels with the volitional purposes and motives of the spiritual level. In and to a finite universe the Son, Spirit, and Paradise function in and upon the Ultimate as he is conditioned and qualified in the Supreme. (1263.2) 115:3.15 Actuality (of Deity) is what man seeks in the Paradise ascent. Potentiality (of human divinity) is what man evolves in that search. The Original is what makes possible the coexistence and integration of man the actual, man the potential, and man the eternal. (1263.3) 115:3.16 The final dynamics of the cosmos have to do with the continual transfer of reality from potentiality to actuality. In theory, there may be an end to this metamorphosis, but in fact, such is impossible since the Potential and the Actual are both encircuited in the Original (the I AM), and this identification makes it forever impossible to place a limit on the developmental progression of the universe. Whatsoever is identified with the I AM can never find an end to progression since the actuality of the potentials of the I AM is absolute, and the potentiality of the actuals of the I AM is also absolute. Always will actuals be opening up new avenues of the realization of hitherto impossible potentials — every human decision not only actualizes a new reality in human experience but also opens up a new capacity for human growth. The man lives in every child, and the morontia progressor is resident in the mature God-knowing man. (1263.4) 115:3.17 Statics in growth can never appear in the total cosmos since the basis for growth — the absolute actuals — is unqualified, and since the possibilities for growth — the absolute potentials — are unlimited. From a practical viewpoint the philosophers of the universe have come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as an end. (1263.5) 115:3.18 From a circumscribed view there are, indeed, many ends, many terminations of activities, but from a larger viewpoint on a higher universe level, there are no endings, merely transitions from one phase of development to another. The major chronicity of the master universe is concerned with the several universe ages, the Havona, the superuniverse, and the outer universe ages. But even these basic divisions of sequence relationships cannot be more than relative landmarks on the unending highway of eternity. (1263.6) 115:3.19 The final penetration of the truth, beauty, and goodness of the Supreme Being could only open up to the progressing creature those absonite qualities of ultimate divinity which lie beyond the concept levels of truth, beauty, and goodness. 4. Sources of Supreme Reality (1263.7) 115:4.1 Any consideration of the origins of God the Supreme must begin with the Paradise Trinity, for the Trinity is original Deity while the Supreme is derived Deity. Any consideration of the growth of the Supreme must give consideration to the existential triodities, for they encompass all absolute actuality and all infinite potentiality (in conjunction with the First Source and Center). And the evolutionary Supreme is the culminating and personally volitional focus of the transmutation — the transformation — of potentials to actuals in and on the finite level of existence. The two triodities, actual and potential, encompass the totality of the interrelationships of growth in the universes. (1264.1) 115:4.2 The source of the Supreme is in the Paradise Trinity — eternal, actual, and undivided Deity. The Supreme is first of all a spirit person, and this spirit person stems from the Trinity. But the Supreme is secondly a Deity of growth — evolutionary growth — and this growth derives from the two triodities, actual and potential. (1264.2) 115:4.3 If it is difficult to comprehend that the infinite triodities can function on the finite level, pause to consider that their very infinity must in itself contain the potentiality of the finite; infinity encompasses all things ranging from the lowest and most qualified finite existence to the highest and unqualifiedly absolute realities. (1264.3) 115:4.4 It is not so difficult to comprehend that the infinite does contain the finite as it is to understand just how this infinite actually is manifest to the finite. But the Thought Adjusters indwelling mortal man are one of the eternal proofs that even the absolute God (as absolute) can and does actually make direct contact with even the lowest and least of all universe will creatures. (1264.4) 115:4.5 The triodities which collectively encompass the actual and the potential are manifest on the finite level in conjunction with the Supreme Being. The technique of such manifestation is both direct and indirect: direct in so far as triodity relations repercuss directly in the Supreme and indirect in so far as they are derived through the eventuated level of the absonite. (1264.5) 115:4.6 Supreme reality, which is total finite reality, is in process of dynamic growth between the unqualified potentials of outer space and the unqualified actuals at the center of all things. The finite domain thus factualizes through the co-operation of the absonite agencies of Paradise and the Supreme Creator Personalities of time. The act of maturing the qualified possibilities of the three great potential Absolutes is the absonite function of the Architects of the Master Universe and their transcendental associates. And when these eventualities have attained to a certain point of maturation, the Supreme Creator Personalities emerge from Paradise to engage in the agelong task of bringing the evolving universes into factual being. (1264.6) 115:4.7 The growth of Supremacy derives from the triodities; the spirit person of the Supreme, from the Trinity; but the power prerogatives of the Almighty are predicated on the divinity successes of God the Sevenfold, while the conjoining of the power prerogatives of the Almighty Supreme with the spirit person of God the Supreme takes place by virtue of the ministry of the Conjoint Actor, who bestowed the mind of the Supreme as the conjoining factor in this evolutionary Deity. 5. Relation of the Supreme to the Paradise Trinity (1264.7) 115:5.1 The Supreme Being is absolutely dependent on the existence and action of the Paradise Trinity for the reality of his personal and spirit nature. While the growth of the Supreme is a matter of triodity relationship, the spirit personality of God the Supreme is dependent upon, and is derived from, the Paradise Trinity, which ever remains as the absolute center-source of perfect and infinite stability around which the evolutionary growth of the Supreme progressively unfolds. (1265.1) 115:5.2 The function of the Trinity is related to the function of the Supreme, for the Trinity is functional on all (total) levels, including the level of the function of Supremacy. But as the age of Havona gives way to the age of the superuniverses, so does the discernible action of the Trinity as immediate creator give way to the creative acts of the children of the Paradise Deities. 6. Relation of the Supreme to the Triodities (1265.2) 115:6.1 The triodity of actuality continues to function directly in the post-Havona epochs; Paradise gravity grasps the basic units of material existence, the spirit gravity of the Eternal Son operates directly upon the fundamental values of spirit existence, and the mind gravity of the Conjoint Actor unerringly clutches all vital meanings of intellectual existence. (1265.3) 115:6.2 But as each stage of creative activity proceeds out through uncharted space, it functions and exists farther and farther removed from direct action by the creative forces and divine personalities of central emplacement — the absolute Isle of Paradise and the infinite Deities resident thereon. These successive levels of cosmic existence become, therefore, increasingly dependent upon developments within the three Absolute potentialities of infinity. (1265.4) 115:6.3 The Supreme Being embraces possibilities for cosmic ministry that are not apparently manifested in the Eternal Son, the Infinite Spirit, or the nonpersonal realities of the Isle of Paradise. This statement is made with due regard for the absoluteness of these three basic actualities, but the growth of the Supreme is not only predicated on these actualities of Deity and Paradise but is also involved in developments within the Deity, Universal, and Unqualified Absolutes. (1265.5) 115:6.4 The Supreme not only grows as the Creators and creatures of the evolving universes attain to Godlikeness, but this finite Deity also experiences growth as a result of the creature and Creator mastery of the finite possibilities of the grand universe. The motion of the Supreme is twofold: intensively toward Paradise and Deity and extensively toward the limitlessness of the Absolutes of potential. (1265.6) 115:6.5 In the present universe age this dual motion is revealed in the descending and ascending personalities of the grand universe. The Supreme Creator Personalities and all their divine associates are reflective of the outward, diverging motion of the Supreme, while the ascending pilgrims from the seven superuniverses are indicative of the inward, converging trend of Supremacy. (1265.7) 115:6.6 Always is the finite Deity seeking for dual correlation, inward toward Paradise and the Deities thereof and outward toward infinity and the Absolutes therein. The mighty eruption of the Paradise-creative divinity personalizing in the Creator Sons and powerizing in the power controllers, signifies the vast outsurge of Supremacy into the domains of potentiality, while the endless procession of the ascending creatures of the grand universe witnesses the mighty insurge of Supremacy toward unity with Paradise Deity. (1265.8) 115:6.7 Human beings have learned that the motion of the invisible may sometimes be discerned by observing its effects on the visible; and we in the universes have long since learned to detect the movements and trends of Supremacy by observing the repercussions of such evolutions in the personalities and patterns of the grand universe. (1266.1) 115:6.8 Though we are not sure, we believe that, as a finite reflection of Paradise Deity, the Supreme is engaged in an eternal progression into outer space; but as a qualification of the three Absolute potentials of outer space, this Supreme Being is forever seeking for Paradise coherence. And these dual motions seem to account for most of the basic activities in the presently organized universes. 7. The Nature of the Supreme (1266.2) 115:7.1 In the Deity of the Supreme the Father-I AM has achieved relatively complete liberation from the limitations inherent in infinity of status, eternity of being, and absoluteness of nature. But God the Supreme has been freed from all existential limitations only by having become subject to experiential qualifications of universal function. In attaining capacity for experience, the finite God also becomes subject to the necessity therefor; in achieving liberation from eternity, the Almighty encounters the barriers of time; and the Supreme could only know growth and development as a consequence of partiality of existence and incompleteness of nature, nonabsoluteness of being. (1266.3) 115:7.2 All this must be according to the Father’s plan, which has predicated finite progress upon effort, creature achievement upon perseverance, and personality development upon faith. By thus ordaining the experience-evolution of the Supreme, the Father has made it possible for finite creatures to exist in the universes and, by experiential progression, sometime to attain the divinity of Supremacy. (1266.4) 115:7.3 Including the Supreme and even the Ultimate, all reality, excepting the unqualified values of the seven Absolutes, is relative. The fact of Supremacy is predicated on Paradise power, Son personality, and Conjoint action, but the growth of the Supreme is involved in the Deity Absolute, the Unqualified Absolute, and the Universal Absolute. And this synthesizing and unifying Deity — God the Supreme — is the personification of the finite shadow cast athwart the grand universe by the infinite unity of the unsearchable nature of the Paradise Father, the First Source and Center. (1266.5) 115:7.4 To the extent that the triodities are directly operative on the finite level, they impinge upon the Supreme, who is the Deity focalization and cosmic summation of the finite qualifications of the natures of the Absolute Actual and the Absolute Potential. (1266.6) 115:7.5 The Paradise Trinity is considered to be the absolute inevitability; the Seven Master Spirits are apparently Trinity inevitabilities; the power-mind-spirit-personality actualization of the Supreme must be the evolutionary inevitability. (1266.7) 115:7.6 God the Supreme does not appear to have been inevitable in unqualified infinity, but he seems to be on all relativity levels. He is the indispensable focalizer, summarizer, and encompasser of evolutionary experience, effectively unifying the results of this mode of reality perception in his Deity nature. And all this he appears to do for the purpose of contributing to the appearance of the inevitable eventuation, the superexperience and superfinite manifestation of God the Ultimate. (1267.1) 115:7.7 The Supreme Being cannot be fully appreciated without taking into consideration source, function, and destiny: relationship to the originating Trinity, the universe of activity, and the Trinity Ultimate of immediate destiny. (1267.2) 115:7.8 By the process of summating evolutionary experience the Supreme connects the finite with the absonite, even as the mind of the Conjoint Actor integrates the divine spirituality of the personal Son with the immutable energies of the Paradise pattern, and as the presence of the Universal Absolute unifies Deity activation with the Unqualified reactivity. And this unity must be a revelation of the undetected working of the original unity of the First Father-Cause and Source-Pattern of all things and all beings. With all the changes we are experiencing, as “reality” is getting stranger and stranger, “it’s important to understand how to meditate, how to shut off the static in the mind to reach the true signal that’s coming from that Supreme Reality that’s trying to guide us, but that we don’t generally pay attention to because we’ve been indoctrinated that It doesn’t exist, and [that] we shouldn’t pay attention to it, it’s only our imagination, and we should only pay attention to what we can establish by the scientific method, etc., etc.,” elucidates Shunyamurti, the spiritual guide of the Sat Yoga Institute in Costa Rica. “And so, we have to learn to make that shift into a higher dimension of consciousness. And the traditional yogic way of doing that—which is the earliest scientific method—true method of conscious transformation—is through an internalization, a turning around of our conscious energies. And in the meditative state, we do this in a seven stage process that will lead to samadhi.” “So the first stage is that of pacification: if you want to meditate, you have to pacify your body. . . . enough that we can then go to the second stage, which is pranafication. The body is not basically physical, that’s the illusion. The second level, the more subtle level, is that of prana, which we could call ‘bioelectromagnetic energies,’ that are flowing through the body. And we need to become aware of the prana and get it to flow. . . . And the pranafication will then lead to the third stage, which is a pyramidization: the prana will begin to pyramid upward, the ‘kundalini shakti energy,’ which is even more subtle than the prana, will begin to rise.” This will lead to the fourth stage, which is “pinealization, the activation of the pineal gland.” The activation of the pineal gland, revealing the inner light, will lead to “pontification” in which one can “download, from the Source, information that can be turned into symbolic form, whether in language or images or mathematics or music, whatever is needed for a particular kind of communication . . .” Recorded on the evening of Thursday, January 13, 2011.
Excerpt: “Each of us is the incarnation of Christ. Or of Buddha, if you prefer; or of Krishna—take your pick, it doesn’t matter, but we’ll use Christ tonight; you’re all of them. But do you realize it? Is that real for you, or is that just an intellectual idea? The process of transformation is taking this from an idea into a realization. . . . The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said that history could be divided into three phases. In the ancient world, people sacrificed what was really valuable to them . . . until, finally, Christ said ‘God doesn’t want that, actually. What God wants is you to sacrifice your lower nature. Sacrifice your suffering! Sacrifice your ego itself to God.’ . . . And so in order to escape from this hell realm that we have turned time into and our lives into . . . we must rise to the higher level of the cross where the fullness of God can be re-experienced , re-grasped as our own nature. . . . To do that though, we have to recognize that the scientistic worldview that we inherited since Newton, that claims that the world is mechanistic and that life, ultimately, is on a basis of inanimate matter that can be understood and controlled technologically, etc., and the genes can be manipulated and all of that—this pseudo-mastery and hubris, the arrogance of human ego-consciousness, has to be overcome. And we have to recognize that the entire universe is alive. . . . And in the ancient world (that we think of as superstitious), they were aware that there were actants also that are non-physical. . . . And there are all kinds of entities, terrestrial and extraterrestrial, that actually share this cosmos with us, and some from other dimensions who visit that we don’t tend to see, and angels who come, that, if you are attuned properly, you will be aware of. But the modern scientific mind has poo-poo’d all of that and has caused us to live in a very barren desolate kind of world. But the world is alive with infinite richness and beauty and power and wisdom if we will be willing to tune into it. But it requires a kind of humility. . . . And when we do that, we will discover that the God that was absent and missing . . . or in exile, is right here! God is not absent at all. It’s your ego that has simply veiled the presence of the Supreme Reality from your consciousness. . . . And through this time of trial, the human species will be transformed; it’s a blessing. And a new age can only be brought to life when we have gone through the fire of dissolving the ego and live in the radiance of the Real Self.” Recorded on the evening of Thursday, December 16, 2010.
Student Question: You mentioned today about being able to throw everything into the flame. What is the relationship between throwing the individual ego into the Flame, the Supreme Reality, and throwing into the Flame as a community as well? “Well you can’t have a community until its members throw the ego into the Flame,” reveals Shunyamurti, the spiritual leader of the Sat Yoga Spiritual Community. The ego is always in defiance of any law—either lower or higher. And so the ego must be humbled, it must come to recognize that it does not have autonomy over the world, others—or even itself. “And this cannot be legislated, no State can enforce this—not even a religion can enforce this—it has to be done by oneself.” Recorded on the evening of Thursday, November 11, 2010.
Meditation is paradoxical. All meditations is, is an attempt to stop trying to do anything. “How can you create a technique for not trying to do anything?” asks Shunyamurti, the spiritual director of the Sat Yoga Institute in Costa Rica. “If you do, then the very technique defeats the effort of not making any effort.” This is akin to the problem of self-reference which “has become a very big business, actually, since Bertrand Russell and Kurt Gödel. . . . Basically it comes down to the ‘liar’s paradox,’ you know, the guy from Crete who says ‘I’m lying.’ Is he telling the truth when he’s saying he’s lying? Well, if he’s telling the truth, he isn’t lying.” And, at the same time, if he’s lying then he’s telling the truth. “Anyway, you can go around and round forever in this, and this is basically all the ego is: it’s basically a voice in your head attacking you, and then you defend yourself against that voice. It’s two voices of self-reference, but they’re both delusional.” “And the problem is that the ego doesn’t exist, except as the self-reference of one voice referring to another—both of which are in the same mind. And without the two voices attacking one another, of course, there is no mind, because the existence of the mind, as an illusion, is created by the fact that there are voices. And so if there were a modern-day Descartes, he would probably start out with: ‘I attack myself, therefore I am.’ . . . And, you’re either caught up in the drama, or you escape into the dharma. Those are the two options: dharma and drama. If your dharma is mellow, you won’t be in a melodrama. But to have a mellow dharma means you have to accept the fact that there’s nothing to gain. Not from anything: not from meditation, not from any other thing you would do to improve yourself. You can’t be improved on. Which in a way is a good thing isn’t it? You're already the Buddha-nature. You're already enlightened. You already have God inside of you. You are already That. This is what all the traditions teach. But ‘no no no. I’ve got to create a cloud in front of this realization and then try to blow away the cloud.’” “But, the extraordinary thing is that when you have finally let go of this game of chasing your own tail, that’s when the bliss actually emerges from within. And that’s why this simple act of not doing anything, which drops all of these veils of illusion away, allows you to enter into the Source of your being, the Sat, which is already magical and miraculous and astonishing, without having to do anything, without having to become anything, without having to be anybody—by letting go of that desire to try to be somebody and do something and achieve something—that’s when you discover the reality, the Supreme Reality, of what you are.” Recorded on the evening of Thursday, September 23, 2010.
Student Question: When you are sublimating the lower chakras, specifically from one to seven, what exactly are you purifying? “That’s the core of the ego,” explains Shunyamurti, the founder of the Sat Yoga Institute in Costa Rica. The ego fears “that it doesn’t really exist, that it’s just a mass of fragmented emotions,” which is reminiscent of the baby’s experience before it gains motor skills. “So chakra one contains that ultimate fear of helplessness.” And that feeling of helplessness is absolutely terrifying. “And so when you get into that core of anxiety, and surrender, even that, to the Supreme Reality, and you can witness it without fear, without anxiety—without needing a body, whether in it’s in good condition or in completely dysfunctional condition—then that surrender allows one to rise to the ultimate bliss.” Recorded on the evening of Thursday, August 5, 2010.
Student Comment: You said earlier that the psychic space is curved toward liberation, but I actually thought that you were going to say the opposite, that it is curved away from liberation. That the space has been shaped by conditionings so that people don’t want it, and yet now you’re saying that that space has never been touched. “No it’s the superego that curves you away from that,” explains Shunyamurti, spiritual guide of the Sat Yoga Institute in Costa Rica. Using the example of the interference pattern of a dream (between the unconscious mind and the Atman), Shunyamurti explains: “This is why there is such a thing as Karma. It represents that point of shock between the superego’s agenda and the pull of the Supreme Reality.” Shunyamurti further explains that in modern psychology, the intelligence that has created the dream—which is completely different than the intelligence that identifies itself as a character in the dream—has been completely left out of dream interpretation. “Therefore, even the Freudians or the Jungians don’t really touch into the nature of the source of the dream.” Recorded on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 17, 2009.
