Send us a textI'd like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional unceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People. As a leader, you're going to have to talk. From boardroom presentations to team meetings, public speaking is an unavoidable reality of leadership—yet it's often the skill we're least prepared for when stepping into leadership roles. The question becomes, "How can leaders prepare to step behind the podium and truly connecting with their audience?"In this episode, Matt Drinkhahn, high-performance coach and host of The Eternal Optimist podcast, will explore the fundamental shift that turns average speakers into exceptional ones. Matt reveals his journey from focusing on himself (his appearance, his memorized script, his performance) to genuinely serving his audience - pivotally reorienting everything about his speaking effectiveness.Drawing from his experience delivering over 175 speeches to audiences of up to 2,000 people, Matt shares practical frameworks for speech construction, including the "spider web" approach that liberates you from memorizing every word while maintaining focus on your central message. You'll hear candid stories about his biggest speaking disasters—from splitting his pants onstage to completely freezing mid-presentation—and how these moments became invaluable learning opportunities rather than career-ending catastrophes. This episode offers actionable strategies for preparation, delivery, and recovery when things inevitably go sideways. Learn how to read a room, pivot when necessary, leverage modern tools like AI for preparation, and collect meaningful feedback to continuously improve. Most importantly, discover how shifting your focus from impressing to serving creates an authentic connection that resonates with any audience.Ready to step up to the microphone with confidence? Listen now and transform your approach to one of leadership's most essential skills. Anderson's journey from an aspiring high school teacher to leading a national sales team at JPMorgan Chase is a testament to the unpredictable paths leadership can take. His story of becoming an "accidental leader" reveals the complexity of emotions faced when stepping into leadership roles, highlighting the crucial balance between excitement and fear. Craig's insights emphasize the importance of recognizing leadership potential and preparing for the challenges that lie ahead. Through personal anecdotes, we explore the significance of learning from mistakes and the role of coaching in fast-tracking leadership capabilities. Many organizations underestimate the value of sustained mentorship, viewing it as an expense rather than a long-term investment in effective leadership. We delve into strategies that can bridge this gap, advocating for ongoing support and structured programs to nurture the skills of young leaders, ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of their roles.Through compelling examples, including a cautionary tale from Canadian military history, we underscore the necessity for clarity and precision in leadership instructions. Emerging leaders are encouraged to cultivate self-awareness and understand team dynamics, all while maintaining a clear focus on outcomes and priorities. By fostering intentional leadership and continuous learning, we aim to inspire leaders to pursue their roles with the right motivations, driving both personal and professional growth. In this episode we'll discuss the following topics:• Challenges that new leaders encounter in their roles • The gap in formal leadership training provided by organizations • The importance of investing in leadership development • Practical strategies for emerging leaders to build confidence • The necessity of mentorship and coaching in leadership • Understanding individual team members and tailoring support • Setting clear goals and expectations to improve team alignment • Continuous learningSupport the showLeadership Without Passion Limits the Depth of Your Vision. On this episode of the Story Engine Podcast, I'll discuss the concept of 'The Cost of Getting Through The Day' and how it relates to personal growth and creativity. I share personal experiences with anxiety and the feeling of just getting through the day, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and reframing fear as a tool for growth. I encourage listeners to create a vision for their future that excites them and to actively work towards it, rather than succumbing to survival mode. In This Episode The cost of doing nothing can lead to regret and shame. Anxiety-driven choices often result in unproductive patterns. Naming fears can help in addressing them effectively. Reframing fear as a tool can empower personal growth. Creating a vision for the future is crucial for motivation. Daily practices like journaling can help focus intentions. Recognizing small progress is important for self-acknowledgment. Understanding the roots of fear can lead to healing. Survival mode can hinder creativity and fulfillment. Embracing creativity is essential for a meaningful life. We Discuss 10:24 Understanding Fear and Anxiety 18:19 Creating a Vision for the Future 31:10 Re-enrolling in Your Vision
It's time. This is the episode where we reflect on the year that was and set the stage for the year ahead. I want you to grab your big sheets of paper (yes, the A3 ones), your notebook, and a pen. If you're out walking or driving, no worries—just listen for now, then come back when you can sit down and map it all out. We're going deep girl. We'll celebrate your wins, claim the lessons from 2024, and reconnect to your vision for 2025. The vision gives you energy. It drives your decisions and keeps you anchored to what matters. But we're not stoppin' at vision—we'll build a strategy, get clear on who you need at your table, and map out who you need to become to make this year your best yet. Your new life will cost you your old one, Warrior. Ready to rise? Let's go. 00:00 Welcome to the Warrior School Podcast 01:28 The Power of Movement 02:53 Vision and Goals: A Reflective Walk 04:39 Creating a 10-Year Vision 07:23 Reflecting on 2024 08:09 The Warrior Ascension Event 09:15 Choosing Your Word for the Year 10:41 Overcoming Challenges and Finding Clarity 27:05 Celebrating Wins and Lessons Learned 38:19 Reflecting on 2024: Overcoming Challenges 38:55 Reconnecting to Your Vision and Mission 43:08 The Importance of a Strong Foundation 45:26 Transforming Yourself for Success 49:22 Setting Goals and Creating a Strategy 51:11 The Power of Support and Mentorship 55:39 Becoming the Person Who Achieves Your Goals 01:04:39 Final Thoughts and Next Steps Key Takeaways 2024 Reflections What were your biggest wins this year? Claim them, celebrate them, and give them the energy they deserve. What lessons and takeaways shaped you this year? Who were you at the start of 2024, and who are you now? Reconnect to Your Vision Your vision gives you energy—it drives everything. Get clear on what you want for 2025. Choose your word for the year. What's the word that will guide you, give you focus, and keep you moving forward? Foundation Before Strategy Ask yourself: Is my foundation strong enough to support my vision? If you don't have the energy, resilience, or capacity, you'll run out of steam. Your foundation—your health, your training, your nourishment—matters. Get Specific with SMART Goals Goals aren't just words on a page. Make them Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. Anchor yourself to them so you don't drift. Your Board of Directors Who do you need in your room to make this happen? Build your board of directors—mentors, coaches, partners—because you can't do it alone. Become Her Who is the woman that achieves this? What does Warrior 4.0 (or 5.0) do differently? Start operating from that version of yourself right now. Make the Strategy Clear Break your vision into actionable steps, like a training plan. What are the daily, weekly, and monthly actions you need to take to get there? Big Change Requires Big Courage “Your new life will cost you your old one.” The version of you that got you here won't take you there. Reinvent, reimagine, and redefine yourself. Quotes: "Your new life will cost you your old one." "The vision gives you energy—it drives your decisions and keeps you anchored to what matters." "Is your foundation strong enough to support your vision?" "Celebrate your wins, claim your lessons, and reconnect to your mission—because no one can want your vision more than you." In this episode of Podtastic Audio, I'm back after a brief break for something a bit personal—I had surgery for skin cancer on my left ear. It's been quite the journey, but I'm happy to say I'm on the mend and feeling grateful for all the support I've received. In true podcaster fashion, even during recovery, I couldn't help but jump back on the mic. I also talk about one of my favorite movies, The Greatest Showman, and how its themes of embracing individuality, overcoming adversity, and dreaming big resonate deeply with us indie podcasters. I break down six powerful lessons from the movie that apply to podcasting, reminding us that being different is what helps us stand out, and authenticity is what keeps listeners coming back. Whether you're facing your own personal challenges or simply looking to take your podcast to the next level, this episode is packed with inspiration and practical tips to keep you motivated. I may be down one ear for now, but my passion for podcasting hasn't skipped a beat. Thanks for joining me!
