Hello everyone. We're interrupting our regular programming this week to bring you a taste of something different: On Monday, the journalist Max Tani reported that VICE Media paid its executives out over a million dollars in bonuses in the weeks before filing for bankruptcy — so our friends at Nersey, a new podcast that bears no relation to the VICE music vertical by the same name, convened an emergency pod to talk about it. Emilie joined hosts Trey Smith, Slava P. and boyfriend-of-The-Culture-Journalist Drew Millard to share war stories from their time at VICE and dig into a 139-page “statement of financial affairs” on file with the Southern District of New York, which reveals just how much the company was paying its top brass (among other itemized expenditures) in the months leading up to the Chapter 11 declaration. The Culture Journalist bears no responsibility for anything that's said herein by these guys — though Nersey touches on similar topics to ours, it's much looser in format. But we're sharing their episode on our channels because, well, we think you might enjoy the pod. As for TCJ, we'll be back to business as usual starting next week. Subscribe to Nersey hereDonate to a hardship fund started by recent TCJ guest Sara David for VICE workers who were laid off this spring but have yet to receive severance from the company. Happy Spooky Wednesday! This is the last week of 2023's True Crime January and we are finishing off with a bang! Or a chop... We're talking about the infamous Boise Murder House, better known to residents of Boise, Idaho as the Chop-Chop House. ***CONTENT WARNING*** This week's true crime is a bit more graphic than we've covered in the past. There is descriptions of the murder that might make some listeners uncomfortable. If you're not comfy listening to this, you can skip ahead to 26:05 for the TL;DR. This site of a gruesome murder in 1980s is now reported to be haunted by the ghost of the man who was murdered. Locals tell tales of blood running down walls and people being seen in the windows, but is it true or is it just a college town that likes to scare the freshman? And Kala finishes up TCJ by trying to stump Brittany with some interesting true crime facts. "Trying" being the key word. Thank you for hanging out with us this True Crime January. We can't wait until next week when we celebrate 2 years of Spooky Wednesdays with y'all! We love you and appreciate you! OK, byeeeee! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/leftofskeptic/support

Say hello to Joe McCulloch, everybody! Co-editor of TCJ.com, formerly of Comics Comics, Savage Critics, and the legendary Jog the Blog, Joe is the headliner of our main show Comic Books are Burning in Hell, and the best comics critic of the internet era. There's no other way to say it: no one since Gary Groth has contributed as much high level writing and thinking about the form as Joe. But even the greats are fallible! Case in point: this episode, in which he deigns to babble about Bryan Talbot and Batman at great length with us. That's right folks: it's time for a podcast about some all-time Serious Superhero Comics, the great Legends of the Dark Knight deep cut BATMAN: MASK. Wanna listen?

The time between the first comic being published and the first fan discussion of comics can probably be counted in seconds. From their debut in the early days of the last century, these slabs of words and pictures have stayed in lockstep with other pop culture phenomena in generating a fandom so strong that it not only lasts to this day but literally changed the world we live in. Comics fandom was launched from small fanzines distributed by hand amongst locals or by mail to anywhere else, and it was decades worth of those pamphlets that helped build both the fanbase AND the creator pool necessary to help comics eventually breakout of their publishing ghetto. From The Comics Reader to Alter Ego to Squa Tront to The Comics Journal and all points in-between, the fanzines of yesterday built the fandom of today. But what about today's fanzines? That question prompted Mike & Greg to devote today's episode to not only delving into some fanzine backstory, but also check out some of the 21st century crop of fanzines: Bubbles, Strangers, and But Is It Comic Aht?. And though it may have outlasted its fanzine origins, one can't look at the state of comics discussion and criticism in modern times without checking out the Fantagraphics juggernaut of TCJ. So sit back, relax, and listen to the lads wax poetic about other comics fans waxing poetic about their favorite comics in any way they could! Can James Franco carry a movie? What kind of froyo would he eat? Did he actually lose his arm for 127 hours? We answer all these questions and much more when fellow Boardwalk Audioer, and cool human being, Kelly Mcinerney (@hollyweirdo) arrives at the studio to convince the Boyz to become full-blown Francofiles. Geoff throws a party, our humor becomes predictable, and Niles from One Direction makes an unwanted surprise appearance. Sounds like a fun episode, it is, but it gets even more fun when we take a deep dive into James Franco trivia, discuss our ideal relationships with JF, and pitch an original movie with Kelly’s favorite leading actor. We close things out with one of the most popular segments ever created, Thayer’s Comedy Journal, the TCJ if you will. Things get a little sad when we look at Geoff’s dating life but we get to more fun stuff I swear. Tune in, turn on, and get ready for the ride of your life. For more from the hilarious Kelly you can follow her on Twitter and Instagram @hollyweirdo. On this episode of the interview series -- the very first for cohost Paul Lai! -- the Two Guys with PhDs are pleased to have as their guest Mike Dawson. His latest book, Rules for Dating My Daughter: The Modern Father's Guide to Good Parenting, comes out on May 10th from Uncivilized Books, and our fearless cohosts talk with Mike about his project's journey from Tumblr, to Kickstarter, to finished book. One of the things they discuss early on is the fact that Rules for Dating My Daughter is not one of those gun-hugging "hurt my daughter, and I will hurt you" kind of books you'd expect from the cover image. In it, Mike lays bare his thoughts on the responsibilities of fatherhood (and not just for his daughter) and how those concerns relate to larger-world issues. The book is episodic in nature, comprising fifteen short strips focusing on such topics as gender roles, violence in America, religious observance, global warming, carnivorism, and cultural intolerance...and all filtered through parental concerns. Paul and Derek ask Mike about the genesis of this project and how it's significantly different from his previous books, Troop 142 and Angie Bongiolatti (both published by Secret Acres). At the same time, the tone of the new book isn't dissimilar from those works, and, in fact, one could argue that in Rules for Dating My Daughter, Mike is bringing together the themes of the earlier works -- both political and familial -- and combing them with the autobiographic approach established in his first book, Freddy and Me. And toward the end of the interview, the guys ask Mike about his work as a podcaster cohosting Ink Panthers with Alex Robinson and heading up TCJ Talkies. All in all, the guys have a great time talking with their guest about his art, his thoughts on the industry, and the current state of our culture...as only a dad could do.
