What are your favorite drunk snacks? Coley drops in to hang with Flex and Greg as they talk about Beerio Kart, outlawing drinking games, the worst beers in the world, more craft brewery buyouts, and a drunk woman who put a “dead” deer in her car.Flex kicks off the beer research with Wiggly Wigglers, a smoothie sour from The Brewing Projekt. Later, Coley is sipping on Backstreet Boysenberries, a kettle sour from Captain Fatty's Brewery.Greg learned about quite possibly the best drinking game in existence: Beerio Kart. Now we must find a way to hold an official CBR tournament. The crew talks about the importance of drunk snacks and where to get the best ones. Coley talks about her quarantine after testing positive for COVID. Thanks to Maine for taking the fun out of this week's Ludicrous Libation Law. We've got a list of the world's worst beers, thanks to Beer Advocate. Uinta Brewing is the latest casualty in a recent string of craft brewery buyouts. Wednesday January 12 2022 Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, eLearning, telephone systems, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com Some big changes in beer - Salt Lake City's Uinta Brewing has been purchased by a joint venture that combines importer/sales and marketing company US Beverage with Colorado-based private investment firm FC Crestone. And Molson Coors Beverage Company announced it will sell two brick-and-mortar locations that formerly housed San Diego's Saint Archer Brewing Company to Ballast Point owners Kings & Convicts Brewing Company, which says it will keep current staff and designate the Miramar, California facility as the new operating headquarters for Kings & Convicts. Unity has been on a decline since 2017 and Saint Archer's sales had been growing rapidly, until last year… https://www.goodbeerhunting.com/sightlines/2022/1/10/owners-shed-saint-archer-uinta-amid-impatience-with-slow-craft-market White Oak is the go to wood for barrels, unfortunately it looks like the supply is being cut and processed faster than the trees can be grown to replenish the wood. Thankfully The White Oak Initiative has a collection of partners from academic, government and the private sector working to increase the sustainability long term. The White Oak industry is worth a reported $8.6 Billion in Kentucky alone - and it is used for furniture and flooring as well. https://www.foodandwine.com/news/american-white-oak-wine-whiskey-cask-sustainability And a story with a local flair - to me - in Charlotte (not Charlotte) Vermont malts are being roasted and many New England breweries are reaping the benefits of fresh and local malts. Vermont Malthouse has been putting out about 45 tons of malt per month and is making upgrades that would up that potential output to 75 tons per week. Eventually, they expect they could handle 150 tons a week. As they're trying to use all Vermont grown grains - that means they'll need about 2,000 acres to support that. It's good news for a state that's been losing dairy farmland. For the full story https://www.wcax.com/2022/01/10/mivt-vermont-malthouse/ and check out the malts at https://vermontmalthouse.com Next time: A beer co-op is now serving up their own beers! You’re about to listen to our Virtual Taproom visit with Jeremy Ragonese, president of Uinta Brewing in Salt Lake City. These brief Virtual Taproom conversations are recorded via Zoom and the video is available now on the Utah Beer News YouTube channel. Jeremy’s voice might sound familiar to you, and not just because he’s been a fixture in the Utah craft beer community for the last five years. He also appeared on Episode 52 of the podcast discussing the Utah Brewers Guild and how Utah’s craft beer community is emerging from the pandemic. This time around, Jeremy is here to talk about his start in craft beer and how his path led him to become president of Uinta Brewing in 2019. We also talk briefly about the impact Uinta Brewing has had on Utah craft beer since its founding in 1993. And with American Craft Beer Week 2021 set for May 10-16, Jeremy describes the importance of supporting local, independent craft breweries — not only this week but all year long. Stay tuned to hear what Uinta has planned for American Craft Beer Week and be sure to visit UtahBeerNews.com to learn what other Utah breweries are doing to celebrate the occasion. That said, if breweries would like their American Craft Beer Week events included on the site, please feel free to send along the details to tim@utahbeernews.com. We recorded our conversation on May 7, 2021, and, as I mentioned, you can catch the full video on our YouTube channel, as well as on our Facebook Page. It’s no secret that the last year has proved to be a monumental stress test for Utah’s hospitality industry. And while several local breweries bent to a seemingly impossible degree, none broke. They are all still here and continuing to deliver delicious beers. In this episode of the podcast, we chat with Jeremy Ragonese, president of Uinta Brewing and past president of the Utah Brewers Guild. He gives an update on the Guild, as well as an overview of what the past year looked like from his perspective and what the future may hold for Utah’s craft beer scene as we emerge from the pandemic. Thanks to Jeremy for taking the time to talk with Utah Beer News. And thank you for listening. When you’re finished, please don’t forget to leave a review on your podcast platform of choice. Pillow Talk With Bros: Exploring Masculinity with Open Beers and Open Hearts
Episode 42- On today's bonus episode of Pillow Talk With Bros, Rob & I talk about how we have seen misogyny take place on the new app Clubhouse, why men feel the need to talk over women, the subtle difference between sexism and misogyny, and reflect on whether or not we have participated in mansplaining behaviors. Drink of the Day- Joe is drinking a Hop Nosh IPA from Uinta Brewing in Salt Lake City, UT. This flagship IPA boasts an assertive bitterness and vibrant hop aromatics. Expect notes of pine, lime zest, and grapefruit supported by caramel malts. At 7.3% ABV, it squeezes into Bro Beer Status. Check em out at http://www.uintabrewing.com/ or @uintabrewing on Instagram. BIPOC BUSINESS OF THE WEEK- Spaceway Brewery in Rocky Mount, NC is a nod to Afrofuturism; which seeks to imagine a future in which minorities who are scarcely represented in pop culture are depicted as leading characters. As in pop culture images of the future minorities are scarcely represented in the craft beer industry. Spaceway Brewing Company is unique in that its goal is to not only reinvent simple and full- flavored craft-brewed beer, but to create a sense of community through craft brewing education, innovation, activities/festivals, and community ownership, in addition to helping to change the industry’s approach toward inclusion of minorities. In the most lengthy Crafty Beer Girls Podcasts to date, your hosts, Jenni Shafer and Lauren Lerch, kick things off with an interview involving Jennifer Hamilton. Jennifer (along with her husband Jeff) own and operate Utah's only dedicated hard cider production facility and taphouse, Mountain West Hard Cider. Incidentally, their corporate office conference room, has been a makeshift recording studio for several episodes of the Crafty Beer Girls Podcast. During their interview, they dive into a very interesting and insightful conversation regarding the recent changes in Utah beer laws that happened on November 1st. Utah's law on alcohol content has been raised from 4.0% alcohol by volume to 5.0% alcohol by volume. This momentous change has either been loved and embraced OR downright despised by many in the Utah craft beer industry and the Utah craft beer community. The girls also sample a host of beers. Including several from the Utah craft beer breweries that took home medals from this year's Great American Beer Festival. Five local breweries took home six medals this year. The most awards won by Utah craft beer breweries since 2014. Those breweries were Shades Brewing (Gold), TF Brewing (Silver), Red Rock Brewing (Silver and Bronze) Squatters Craft Beers (Silver) and Lever Crossing Brewing (Bronze). The girls even try a delicious American Wild Ale (snagged by Jenni Shafer during a bike trip she took in New Mexico) from 2019 Great American Beer Festival winner (for Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year), Rowley Farmhouse Ales. The beer, entitled "Songs Of Our Own", was a collaboration beer. Here is a detailed description borrowed from Untappd: "We've been passionate about brewing spontaneously fermented ales for many years, as this is a process that has not only historical significance, but also carries a degree of romance that cannot be matched via traditional industrial brewing techniques. Songs of Our Own is our first commercial foray into spontaneous fermentation, and was completed with the help of the kind folks at 12 West Brewing Company in Mesa, Arizona. We were fortunate enough to have them come up to Santa Fe with their mobile coolship in early 2018. It is the first commercially produced coolship inoculated beer brewed in the state of New Mexico. We aren't calling this a Méthode Traditionnelle beer by any stretch, but simply a start to what we hope to be an annual tradition of local spontaneous fermentations for us. After 16 months of aging in wine barrels, this beer underwent additional refermentation in the barrel with tangerines, and was finished in 750 mL bottles with local wildflower honey. We are happy to release this as our 3rd anniversary beer, and hope you enjoy it as much as we have waiting for it to come around."

Frattallone is out this week, but Reuvers is joined by Tom from Elevated and his guest Randy from Uinta Brewing!
Kevin Ely knows beer. And now he knows how to build a brewery — literally by hand. Kevin's story is a pivot of a different nature. Previously the brewmaster at Uinta Brewing, a nationally recognized craft brewery in Salt Lake City, Kevin and his wife Jael Malenke decided to move back to her hometown in Fresno and purchase a farm. Fresno, Ohio that is. Armed with a degree in brewing science from UC Davis (yes, it's really a thing), Kevin is no hobbyist. Beer is indeed his career and he's a recurring judge at the annual Great American Beer Festival. Kevin shares with us his decision to start his own brewery in Ohio, the importance that family and community played in that decision, and why starting a farm brewery in a rural patch of rolling hills just made sense. Curly haired mangalitsa pigs ("wooly" pigs) that inspired the name actually roam his farmland and are visible from his taproom patio with cold beer in hand. It's both idyllic and intentional; and it's also indicative of everything about this brewery. From the quirky name to the German-Bavarian style of beers he chooses to brew, down to his hand-made and hand-planed taproom — all of it is crafted with purpose and a story behind it.

Uinta Brewing Company opened their doors in 1993 with a sole focus on craft brewing -- no pubs or bars, just really great beer. Salt Lake City wasn't known as a brewing mecca, and previous breweries had all opened with a restaurant attached. So to outsiders, co-founders Will Hamill and Dell Vance were taking a chance, but they had an ace up their sleeve: they knew how to make really, really good beer. What originally began as Great Basin Brewing took root in a rented out mechanical shop with three primary beers. Cutthroat, Golden Spike, and Kings Peak. These three “founding beers” helped Uinta grow throughout the local Salt Lake City and Utah market, and led to a slow and steady expansion. In 2010, the craft brew market exploded. What was originally a hobby and passion for a small niche of the beer-drinking market suddenly became a national obsession, and Uinta's shadow loomed over the competition. They were in the craft brew market before such a market truly existed, and they had the skill, expertise, and consistency to show how craft beer was meant to be done. 23 years, 30 or so beers, and thousands of stores later, Uinta Brewing Company has grown to be the 38th largest craft brewing company in the country. Will Hamill joins us on the podcast today to share the passionate and unique beginnings of Uinta Brewing Company. His love for the environment and flavorful brews have led to a sustainably run company that operates within strict Utah liquor laws with swift and nimble creativity.—This episode of The Utah Foodie was hosted by Chase Murdock and produced by Ryan Samanka. This week's Can You Brew It challenge is Uinta Brewing's Wyld Organic Extra Pale Ale. Wyld is a lighter bodied pale ale that is aggressively hopped to showcase fresh hop flavors. It's a delicate beer to get right, but worth it for an easy drinking hop flavor forward pale. Tune in and see if the CYBI crew was able to get it right.
