Suit up, listeners, because this week we're flying high (or maybe just hovering awkwardly) with The Meteor Man and Blankman. That's right. On this episode of Not A Bomb—Movie Matchup Edition, the guys tackle a pair of African-American-led superhero films. Troy and Brad are joined by their sidekick in film discussion, a man who knows all things comic books and superheroes, Mr Korean Kool himself, John.Listen as we dive into these ‘90s superhero gems that weren't afraid to get a little weird. What happens when a mild-mannered teacher gains superpowers from a mysterious green meteor—only to discover his abilities include talking to dogs and making plants grow? And what's the deal with Blankman's unorthodox crime-fighting tactics and his hilariously named sidekick, Other Guy? Plus, what exactly is going on with Blankman's quirky robot companion, J-5?We'll dive into the neon gang wars and the inexplicably star-studded casts (hello, James Earl Jones rocking that wig) and determine if these films are bombs. More importantly, the guys decide which film is the champion for the week. It's an episode full of laughs, nostalgia, and plenty of homemade superhero charm. Don't miss it!"The Meteor Man is directed by Robert Townsend and stars Robert Townsend, Marla Gibb, Eddie Griffin, Robert Guillaume, James Earl Jones, Bill Cosby, Another Bad Creation, Luther Vandross, Sinbad, Naughty by Nature, Cypress Hill, Big Daddy Kane, and Faizon Jone.Blankman is directed Mike Binder and stars Damon Wayans, David Alan Grier, Robin Givens, Jon Polito, and Jason Alexander. Not A Bomb has has plenty of spooky designs in our Merch store! Send us a Text Message. On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are dunking ourselves in questionable goo to save the world. We watched the 1994 film by Mike Binder, Blankman.Watching Blankman is like becoming Blankman: you feel like a nerdy film buff while you're doing it, and by the end of the movie, you'll end up feeling like you can take down crime. It's like giving yourself superpowers! The sheer excitement of discovering something that should, by all rights, be terrible is actually kind of good. And it's heartwarming as hell. This month's B-movie episode is surprising all the way through. It's the sort of thing that reminds us why we all got into this movie game. Steve Cooper talks with director/writer/actor/comic Mike Binder. Mike created and starred in the HBO series The Mind of the Married Man. He has directed, written and co-starred in various movies such as The Sex Monster, The Upside of Anger, Reign Over Me and Man About Town. He has written or directed (or both) on such projects as Blankman, Crossing the Bridge, Indian Summer, Black or White, Billions, Ray Donovan and Nashville. As a stand-up comic he has appeared on many shows including Late Night with David Letterman, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, The Pat Sajak Show, One Night Stand and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. He also recently hosted the Showtime docu-series The Comedy Store.
Mike Binder is one amazing guy. He's a multi-talented comedian, actor, writer, director, and documentarian. And he's as down-to-earth as they come. He's a stand-up comedian turned movie-maker and has written and directed films like the heartwarming “Indian Summer,” the touching and funny “The Upside of Anger,” directed the cult classic "Blankman", and created, wrote and directed the successful HBO series “The Mind of the Married Man,” wrote, directed and produced Showtime's wonderful five-part documentary series “The Comedy Store," and is working on his second Bill Burr comedy special. An old friend of Mark's, Mike talks with the guys in a very open and honest conversation about his early years in comedy, how tough it is to get movies made, the art of learning from mistakes, finding sobriety, and the hardship of the recent losses (and warm memories) of good friends Bob Saget and Gilbert Gottfried. Mike shares some great stories about seeing Richard Pryor as a young kid, his little-brother type relationship with Jay Leno as he was starting out, additional scoop about the Comedy Store, and much more!Comedy fans MUST check out Mike's new website and Substack, invaluable resources on what's going on in the world of comedy: https://standupworld.com/Check out Mike's IMDB page for ideas on what to catch up on and what to watch out for:https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0082802/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1And be sure to follow Mike:https://twitter.com/mikebinderjokeshttps://www.instagram.com/themikebinder/Your hosts:Mark Schiffhttps://markschiff.comhttps://twitter.com/markschiffhttps://instagram.com/markschiff1Lowell Benjaminhttps://twitter.com/lowellcbenjaminhttps://instagram.com/lowellcbenjaminCheck out Mark's book"I Killed: True Stories of the Road from America's Top Comics"https://www.amazon.com/Killed-True-Stories-Americas-Comics-ebook/dp/B0024NP5DI
