Ellen Bennett is the founder and Chief Brand Officer of Hedley & Bennett, a trailblazing kitchen essentials company. A multi-hyphenate, Ellen balances her roles as business owner, chef, TV personality, home renovator, wife and mother of two.  Half Mexican, half English, a passion for cooking led Ellen to Mexico City for culinary school at age 18. She returned to LA to cook professionally in some of the city's best kitchens, including two-Michelin starred restaurant Providence, where she realized there was ample room for improvement in the standard kitchen work wear.  Starting with only $300, Hedley & Bennett launched with a single apron, reimagining the kitchen staple with professional grade quality that was also stylish. Ellen Bennett didn't quite know what she was going to do when she landed in Mexico at age 18, ready to explore her cultural heritage and embark on a voyage of self-discovery. Tirelessly working odd jobs, including announcing the winning lottery tickets on TV, a stay of two months quickly became four years, and she was ready for the next adventure. Working as a line cook, it didn't take long for Ellen to realize that, while she didn't want to become a restauranteur like she originally thought, she did want to revolutionize the industry. Although her now-ubiquitous Hedley & Bennett aprons are a must-have for chefs and home cooks alike, it took a good deal of creativity, confidence, trial and error to get from her first batch of 40 aprons to the culinary staple they've now become. With her bootstraps philosophy and wildly impressive, self-taught marketing skills, Ellen bestows the humble apron with an air of magic that helps chefs of all calibers look and feel the part. Not only that, but she also reveals her personal secrets to overcoming paralyzing doubt in order to make your dreams a reality in her new book, Dream First, Details Later! Thanks for listening! One of the most common stories I hear is, "I'm not ready yet." You have a dream, a goal, an ambition, but without the connections, skills, or resources it feels out of reach. Social media makes it easy to see others' success without showing the REAL stuff. Late nights, blood, sweat, tears… the messy middle doesn't make the highlight reel. This mindset undermines our confidence and inhibits creativity. Chances are, you do have what you need to get started. Today's show is going to prove it to you. Ellen Bennett, Founder of Hedley and Bennett and author of DREAM FIRST, DETAILS LATER, lifts the curtains to talk about her uncertain, circuitous, passion-driven journey. After a difficult divorce at age 9, Ellen was raised by her mother, who worked long hours to keep the lights on and the family fed. At 18, a two-month trip to Mexico turned into 4 years before Ellen returned to the U.S., walked in the back door of a Michelin star restaurant and asked for a job as a line cook. There, she observed the challenges cooks faced- one of them being the one-size fits all aprons that wore out, caused problems and generally weren't quality products. Hedley and Bennett is now one of the world's leading Apron manufacturers, collaborating with tastemakers like Martha Stewart and Alton Brown and top chefs like David Chang, April Bloomfield, and Nobu Matsuhisa. For aspiring entrepreneurs stuck in analysis paralysis, creatives procrastinating on a personal project, or anyone caught in obsessive over-planning, Ellen shares her gutsy personal playbook to putting your inner worrier on silent and leaping into action. Before cooking at Michelin star restaurants, Ellen Bennett worked as a lottery announcer, an English tutor, and a “booth babe”. All of these jobs taught her to be comfortable in uncomfortable positions. When her head chef told her that he needed new aprons for all the cooks, Ellen took to the challenge, with no business plan, no connections, and no experience designing aprons. The deadline, uncomfortability, and challenge pushed her to deliver the aprons on time, and start Hedley & Bennett. Now, Ellen runs this multi-million dollar business that delivers to Michelin star restaurants and at-home cooks alike. Ellen talks about the necessity of committing to something scary, even when you don’t know how to handle it. She used the same approach when buying 3 rental properties nearby her home in Los Angeles, all of which have appreciated dramatically. The mantra used in creating a successful business, investment, or anything else is Dream First, Details Later, which also happens to be the name of Ellen's new book! An entrepreneur can get bogged down so easily with the details of any venture, so much sometimes that it could push them away from accomplishing something great. In This Episode We CoverHow Ellen accidentally started an incredibly successful apron business Using the pandemic to think differently about products and needsLooking at challenges as a gift and an excuse to growHow to plan when you know that things won’t go as plannedSetting your employees up for a failure-first mindset (so they succeed!)And So Much More!Links from the ShowReal Estate Rookie Facebook GroupBiggerPockets ForumsMySpaceWalmartFordAshley's InstagramTony's InstagramCheck the full show notes here: http://biggerpockets.com/rookie76

Every day something happens that could be the catalyst to change your life forever. At the age of 18, a passion for cooking led Ellen Marie Bennett to Mexico City. After culinary school — and countless crazy jobs — Ellen came back to LA to cook professionally in some of the city's best kitchens. When she was only 24 years old, she heard the head chef announce he was ordering a batch of aprons. Tired of wearing their poorly-designed garments, she blurted out “I have an apron company!” That fib led to Hedley & Bennett, an empire beloved by tastemakers such as Martha Stewart and Alton Brown. She believes that the right tools — including the right apron — will change how you feel, the way that you stand, and the way that you take on the task at hand. If you could bottle up her productivity and enthusiasm, it’d be a best seller — but since we can’t, reading her book will have to do. Growing up in LA, Ellen Bennet had no idea her summer spent with her grandma in a small town in Mexico would play a huge role not only his how she saw the world and related to people, but also in the career she’d eventually pursue and the company she would build. Describing herself as half Mexican, half English, born and raised in LA by a fiery mom who calls her “Mami,” and having never met a color she didn’t like, she is the founder of Hedley & Bennett, a company that crafts some of the coolest, most beautiful and kitchen tough aprons, worn by a lineage of many of the top chefs in the most iconic restaurants and kitchens in the world. But she didn’t start out that way. Coming out of high school, without a strong sense of direction, she got on a plane to Mexico City, alone, and vanished into the culture, building a career and life before feeling called back to LA to make her mark cooking, under the guidance of two legendary chefs and restaurateurs. But a single, fateful moment, when she heard her mentor ask a simple question, then made a promise that, at the time, she had no idea how to keep, led her to launch her own company. The adventures that followed are the stuff of legend, many of the learnings and tales are shared in her wonderful new book, Dream First, Details Later, and we dive into it all in today’s conversation.
