Eastern Cougars? How to Know if a Species is Really There

Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 1, 2020 39:16

This week’s episode is inspired by photos posted to a Facebook group. A user posted these photos of part of a deer carcass high in a tree. They asked what animal would cause this? I watched the responses pour in and I knew what they would be. Cougar. Mountain lion. Puma. These are different names for the same species ( Puma concolor ) and I knew people would say with certainty that this big cat did this. But I knew it was not. In fact, I posted that there are NO eastern cougars. But I knew I would get a lot of opposition. I did. In this episode, I talk about how I can be so certain. How scientists in general can be certain of this subspecies absence from such a large are. And also explain what people think they are seeing. Even if you aren’t familiar with the story of cougars in the east, you’ll learn about the evidence (or lack thereof) that scientists use for detecting larger terrestrial mammals. Specifically, I go over: * Where cougars currently live and in the US, where they are starting to expand their range * When eastern cougars were last detected * Why the presence of individuals does not necessarily mean a population exists * My research experience working in the eastern US in relation to cougars, specifically North Carolina and the description of large-scale studies on mammals * Examples of large mammals with very low population sizes that are still detected by scientists * The different methods scientists use to determine absence for large, terrestrial mammals * Where verified cougar detections are found in the US * What people are likely seeing when they say they see a cougar * Explanations of real and verified cougar detections in the eastern US * Where you can submit wild cat photos to have experts determine the species Want to learn more about wildlife biology, being a scientist, and conservation? Life's 3 Big Questions

Andrew Petty is Dying

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2020 64:12

What does a coroner know about life and death that we don’t?  For starters, my guest today, Rob Ryg, says that his 17 years as coroner have shown him that death never comes when you expect it to. Which begs the question, “so if I don’t know when I’ll die, how do I live today?” Rob digs into that question from the perspectives of his own recent encounter with Mortality, his faith, and his experience as coroner to help the rest of us live with more guts, gusto, and abandon now.  This conversation is a coroner’s report from the front lines.   Introducing Roby Ryg Rob’s work begins when someone else's life ends, suddenly and tragically. He has stood in the sacred, grief-filled gap between the living and the dead hundreds of times. He's been privy to moments of courage and grace in the face of loss...and also there when those left behind come unhinged. He's heard what the grieving regret most. He knows better than most of us the havoc that Death leaves in its wake. It's that perspective that we tap into in this episode to gain fresh inspiration and motivation to do today what we keep putting off until "tomorrow." To put living the lives we were made to live on the front burner TODAY. Lest you're tempted to tune out because this conversation sounds like too much of a downer, I've got good news: You'll come away encouraged by Rob's life-affirming perspective--pardoxically, cultivated from hundreds of encounters with Death. Because paradoxically, our relationship with Death is really about our relationship with Life, and by intentionally confronting our Mortality now--before we have no choice--we train ourselves to live with greater guts, gusto, and abandon. So don't tune out. Tune in, way in. And let this conversation about Death bring you even more to Life.  Along the way, Rob shares how his faith comes into play. If you tune into the audio version of this episode, I hope the spiritual parts of the conversation will prompt your own spiritual reflection and introspection. Because for we humans, there are perhaps no topics MORE spiritual than life, death, and what happens next.  Rob and I were just acquaintances before this conversation. I can tell you after this conversation, though, that if I were ever to die suddenly and tragically, I would want Rob to be the guy to comfort my family and tend to my newly-vacated mortal coil. He has a calm and direct way about him, a gaze that holds yours firmly AND gently, and a heart for people above all. He also had his own intense encounter with Mortality just three years ago, so he speaks with a credibility gained from personal experience--not just experience gained on the job.    Here are a few of the big ideas and takeaways from this episode: Rob’s 3 Big Questions For All of Us: Where did I come from?  How do I get the most out of this life while I’m here?  What happens when I’m gone? Death never comes at the right time.  You’re not ready to live until you’re ready to die.  “I wish…” statements are one of the most common things for the loved ones of those who died to express. “I wish I’d told him what he really meant to me.” “I wish I’d spent more time with him.” “I wish I’d pushed him to get more help.” Etc… Do something TODAY to shorten your “I wish…” list! The truth always wins. For example, in this case, the truth of our Mortality. We can try to suppress or avoid that truth, like holding a beach ball under water, but it will always eventually pop up and hit us in the face.  I hope you’ll tune into the whole episode because these bullet points don’t do justice to the depth of wisdom and insight that Rob shares!    Rob’s 3 Big Questions: Make them Personal, Make Them Matter Let's take a minute to let the 3 questions that Rob shared ring in our ears and sink into our hearts and minds. How do YOU answer those questions? For some of you, these questions are familiar because for one reason or another--whether wiring or necessity or some of both (like me!)--you've wrestled with them consciously. For others of you, maybe these questions feel annoying or really uncomfortable, and you'd rather not give them any more time or energy than you already have just listening to this episode. Or maybe you've genuinely never given them the time of day--and not because you're avoiding them, but just because they haven't come up for you. No matter which of those people you are...if Rob is accurate, and these questions and their answers have real-world implications--if they actually have a huge influence on the way we live day-in and day-out, then it makes a lot of sense to answer them for ourselves. Where did you come from? How do you get the most out of this life while you're here? And what happens when you're gone?    You ARE Going to Die: So Create the Life You Were MADE to Live My purpose as a coach is to help you deploy your unique purpose in the world. Connect with via Facebook, my website, or email. I'll help you create the life you know you were made to live. Evan Holod is the CEO of Michel Et Augustin, a cookie company located in France, but Evan is bringing it to the states with a colorful brand and personality Evan is a funny guy with a candid sense of humor but has a lot of wisdom to share about marketing brands like Bazooka Joe, Ring Pop, and Coca-Cola. Michel et Augustine is recently pushing into retail launching in many different grocery stores around the United States. We talk about how to reset your career trajectory, as Evan worked in finance for 7 years before getting a degree in marketing and starting as a marketing assistant for food, then worked his way up to CEO for food. We also talk about marketing tactics. From packaging to convincing people to go with your crazy ideas. About Evan Evan Holod is the CEO (and Chief Troublemaker) at Michel et Augustin, a leading French manufacturer founded in 2004 and known in Europe for their unique approach to everything. A lifelong eater, Evan spends his days with the unenviable task of introducing French pastry know-how to unsuspecting Americans. Whether ideating the next great Franco-American food innovation, securing a distribution deal, or participating in another grueling cookie taste test, Evan and his team of trublions (French for ‘troublemaker’) will stop at nothing to make sure that Americans of all ages have access to delicious, honestly indulgent cookies like their bestselling Cookie Squares (buttery shortbread cookie squares filled with a variety of different chocolate ganache recipes). Prior to his current adventure, Evan was the Brand Director for Coca-Cola in the U.S., responsible for developing and implementing the U.S. brand strategy, targeted marketing communications and advertising, and creating and executing programs like the “Share a Coke” campaign. Evan spent his early years in marketing at glacéau, working on the team that helped drive the growth of smartwater. Evan holds multiple degrees in unrelated and peculiar subjects, with a B.A. from Duke University in History and a Masters in Sports Marketing from NYU. And now we're starting to see real cracks in that global consensus, primarily out of Europe where they're doing a to more research or in Israel, they're doing a lot more research. United States   https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/06/the-court-slices-a-narrow-ruling-out-of-masterpiece-cakeshop/5619   Recap on first case First case for gay wedding cake. States that jack phillips refused to sell a wedding cake. It was for the purpose of the wedding message for the gay couple that he didn’t believe in. The ruling on the case was was that the baker ended up winning the case. But it didn’t resolve the issue between religious freedom and discrimination. Basically, the court ruled that the Colorado Civil Rights Commision had discriminated against religious freedom by being anti-religious in bias. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/acts-of-faith/wp/2018/08/15/baker-claims-religious-persecution-again-this-time-after-denying-cake-for-transgender-woman/ Jack Phillips denied doing cake for trangender "transformation"  cake from male to female where it showed the gender of the transitioned gender to female where the outside of the cake is blue and inside pink.   What does this mean for freedom? What does this mean for anyone religious? What does this mean for the 1st amendment? I awoke before 6:00 am on Wednesday morning to get my children up and off to school. Both of them are attending a new building this year as they enter their trepidatious sixth and seventh grade years. It is a mixed bag for them. They are beginning to own their freedom and are excited to make new friends and find their place in the world. Simultaneously they are a bundle of self-consciousness, anxiety, and angst. “Will I get lost? What if no one likes me? What’s my locker combination again?”I am confident in my children’s ability to navigate their experiences and... as a mother, I feel every ounce of their angst… plus my own.Crossing the threshold of the start of school brings a lot forward for all of us.On the surface, most of us handle it like old pros. We buy the clothes and supplies, pack the lunches, arrange the carpool, and drop them off at the door. Some of us relish the transition as it opens more space for us to be with our Selves and “get some stuff done.”You know, "a mother’s work is never done" and all that. And yet, under the surface, there is a whole world of emotions swimming just out of sight. Most of us avoid pausing to Be With the potency of those feelings. We easily fill the role of Tending the Others, but what about Us? Where do we get to be held and seen in Our Beingness? When do we get to be tracked as lovingly and diligently as we hold our children? The invitation doesn’t come round often. That’s why this one was a Big Deal.On Wild Soul Medicine this week, I called a Red Tent for all Mothers and Daughters. You are being called to listen in to the replay and convene with Us in our Beingness - to sift through the myriad complex energies inhabiting our system as we hold on, let go, teach, coach, tend, and Love our children. We were tending the Tend-ers in this week's show through an Energy Exercise to see what was present. It was a celebration of our freedom, a deep listening to our innermost whispers, and a compassionate leaning into one another as we drop ourselves off and pick ourselves up at the feet of our Soul.As always, we plumbed the depths of the Mystery to retrieve the truest parts of our Selves and loved each other fiercely as we sat by the fire of our Becoming.

Us? Where have YOU been? I realize the title of this episode may make you think we interview Jim Shooter. We do not. But we DO talk about video games more than we should. And about Mark Waid. And once again, Dal does not support Patrick’s (self) righteous indignation on ANY topic.
