We somehow got media credentials (shoutout to Natalie) and made our way to the USATF Indoor Championships—but not without a classic NMO logistical whoopsie.Once in, we witnessed elite track & field action, learned about the true athleticism of race walking (which we're officially rebranding as Thunder Strike), and got to chat with some legends, including Olympic gold medalist Dawn Harper-Nelson, shot put gold medalist Chase Jackson and pole vault champ Katie Moon—who may or may not have named her pole Paul.Back at our hotel we had an unexpected VIP hotel tour that quickly spiraled into a full-on quinceañera experience. Also in this episode: Erin's kids experience their first track meet, make some friends with other media, and ask hard hitting questions.Listen now and join the Thunder Strike movement.
Jason and Kevin discuss Josh Hoey, Nikki Hiltz, Hobbs Kessler, Shelby Houlihan, Grant Holloway and all the other news makers from this year's USATF Indoor Championships. Then, the guys chat about Jacob Kiplimo possibly breaking two hours in the marathon, a trio of boys going sub four minutes in the mile and the state of track and field on television.
Hosts Jonathan Gault, Robert Johnson, and Weldon Johnson give their final thoughts to the 2025 USATF Indoor Championships. Josh Hoey put on an exhibition running 1:43.24, the 2nd fastest 800m ever, and Hobbs Kessler and Nikki Hiltz got double wins in the 3000 and 1500 as Shelby Houlihan returned from her doping ban. Carmen Graves began distance running after becoming a 5 time All-American in the 800m at Roanoke College where she also played soccer. After college she decided to opted to pursue pro running. She found the 3k steeplechase which tested her endurance, speed, and athletic abilities. Like many elite runners, Carmen prioritizes her training outside of long work hours. She works in the non-profit sector as a Program Advisor for the Center of Work Education and Employment, coaches horizontal jumps at Englewood High School, and is the meet director for the Denver Twilight Mile. Despite a full schedule, she is training hard, competing regularly in bigger track events, and has her sights set on some big goals: making the US team in steeplechase and qualifying again for the Olympic Trials in 2024. On this week's show, we had some fast times thrown down in Lievin, France where we saw several world-leading performances and a world record. We're going to spend much of our time previewing the USATF Indoor Championships and the World Cross Country Championships this weekend. Lievin World Indoor Tour: Lamecha Girma broke the indoor 3000m record with a 7:23.81; Meet records fell at the hands of Karsten Warholm, Keely Hodgkinson and Femke Bol. Jakob Ingebrigtsen is paying attention to the American stars now but says, 'I'm still the best.' USATF Indoor Championships: Many of the top stars are absent from this meet since there is no World Indoor Championships this year. Noah Lyles is still the premier star showing up for the men's 60m. Major props to the likes of Aleia Hobbs, Anna Hall, Whittni Morgan, Cole Hocker, Clayton Murphy, Bryce Hoppel and others for contesting the meet. World Cross Country Championships: The race will be held in Mount Panorama Circuit in Australia. If you want to watch, tune in on Friday, Feb. 17, at 11:30 p.m. ET on Peacock. It's a 2K loop. People will be running through a vineyard at times. Possibly some kangaroo sightings. Very hot conditions. Should be spicy with Joshua Cheptegei, Selemon Barega, Letesenbet Gidey and Francine Niyonsaba among the stars competing. + our Buy or Sell segment... "I'm looking forward to competing against those guys. They may be world championship qualifiers and Olympians but if I enter these events scared of them, then I'm not doing myself any favors and I'm not really living up to my mantra of finding my limits. If I can compete with them, I can obviously and hopefully surpass them. I'm looking forward to the competition and getting to know them as competitors and fellow U.S. athletes aspiring for the same dream." My guest for this episode is Atlanta Track Club Elite middle distance star and new 1000m American record holder Shane Streich. A few weeks ago, Shane took people by surprise when he ran 2:16.16 at the American Track League's Eastern Indoors meet to break Bryce Hoppel's previous record by .11 seconds. Shane is having a solid indoor campaign with three wins in his four races so consider him someone to watch at the upcoming USATF Indoor Championships. In this episode, get to learn a bit more about the former Minnesota Gopher and Lipscomb Bison, why he chose those schools, how he flew under the radar after being an Olympic Trials semifinalist and much more. He has an 800m personal best of 1:46.07 and 3:57 for the mile. Things are going right for him and the Atlanta Track Club this season so get a behind-the-scenes look at why. We have one cool cat on the show today and one of the best middle distance runners in the United States and the World. Craig Engels is only 26 years old, but already has an impressive resume as a world-class middle distance runner. He is the 2019 USATF 1500m National Champion in a race where battled the reigning Olympic Gold Medalist, Matt Centrowitz, to the line winning by .04 seconds. He went on to make the IAAF World Championship final that year in the 1500m, where he finished 10th, just .20 seconds off his personal best of 3:34.04. Craig started off 2019 with another USATF title in the mile at the USATF Indoor Championships. Another major highlight of his professional career includes a 7th place finish at the World Indoor Championships in the 1500m in 2018. He also has a personal best of 1:44.68 in the 800m. Craig is coached by Pete Julian and runs for Nike. Mr. Engels attended Ole Miss for a majority of his collegiate career after transferring from North Carolina State University. At Ole Miss, he was a multiple-time NCAA All-American, the first SEC Champion in the 1500m from Ole Miss, and the school-record holder in the 1500m. His senior season he finished 7th at the NCAA Championships in the 1500m, but just a few weeks later at the 2016 Olympic Trials he burst onto the national scene placing 4th in the 800m and 5th in the 1500m, nearly making the Olympic team. He was born and raised in North Carolina and attended Ronald W. Reagan High School in Pfafftown. He set school records in the 800m, mile, and 3200m and also won the best hair award at his high school. Craig's reputation as being cooler than the other side of the pillow held up in this pod. We hope you all enjoy it as much as we did recording it. Thanks Craig! In 2018, he was ninth again–this time at 3,000 meters at the USATF Indoor Championships. A year later Day earned a spot on the U.S. team that competed in Lima, Peru at the Pan American Games where he was tenth over 5,000 meters. Last winter Day had a breakout season that included a personal best at 3,000 meters (7:45.70) as well as his American collegiate record at 5,000 meters (13:16.95)–the latter of which saw him go toe-to-toe with Olympic Silver Medalist Paul Tanui, losing by just one second.
