This week, Diosa and Mala discuss some of the films that made them feel seen, represented, or upon rewatching can now be considered queer film cannon. They dive into explicitly queer films, like "But I'm A Cheerleader", "Quinceañera", and "Mosquita y Mari" and more subtle queer films like "Mulan" and "Y Tú Mamá También." Diosa reveals the bisexual blues she feels each Pride season and Mala offers a fun solution. SOME UPDATES: RSVP to our Podcast Pop Up: All That Wifey Shit is Dead with Carissa Hernandez. A quinceañera is one of the biggest celebrations in Hispanic culture, filled with traditions that have been passed down for generations. And every part of the celebration points to something greater than simply another year on earth. What if these cherished traditions reveal deeper truths about identity, maturity, and the journey God has for our lives? Sometimes the most meaningful lessons are hidden in the moments we've celebrated all along. --------Sign up for Pillars: A 12 Week Discipleship JourneyBuilding Saints who are STRONG, SMART, and STABLE.https://weareoneyouth.com/pillars--------Text the We Are One Hotline for prayer needs and all things We Are One: 844-641-8147For bibles, prayer requests, giving, and more, click the link below to get connected!https://weareoneyouth.com/famIf you just accepted Jesus, if you have a prayer request, or you want to know more about us, CLICK THIS LINK! https://weareoneyouth.com/fam

We return after a brief hiatus to catch up on a whirlwind of recent headlines, from political drama to bizarre claims about aliens, before turning to the Supreme Court's consideration of birthright citizenship and the broader question of executive power versus congressional authority. We examine how Congress has gradually ceded its responsibilities on issues like tariffs, war powers, and immigration, and what that means for the balance of power in government. We then head to Ireland, where one enterprising citizen used AI to track the true price of a pint of Guinness, before moving to Texas for our Foolishness of the Week, where a congressional race has taken an unusual turn as a candidate campaigns by performing at quinceañeras. Finally, we dive into financial bubbles, exploring how markets price uncertainty, why emerging technologies like AI attract massive investment despite unclear outcomes, and how bubbles function as part of the process of discovering what new innovations are actually worth. 00:00 Introduction: A Month of Chaos 02:43 Supreme Court, Birthright Citizenship, and Trump's Presence 03:45 Executive Power vs Congressional Authority 06:16 Why Congress Keeps Ceding Its Power 09:09 Can a System This Large Even Function? 10:17 Ireland's Guinness Price Investigation with AI 13:04 Foolishness of the Week: Texas Campaigning at Quinceañeras 16:04 Redistricting, Demographics, and Political Miscalculations 18:11 Financial Bubbles and Why Economists Ignore Them 19:17 The “Real Economy” vs Financial Markets 22:24 Pricing the Unknown: Cars, Dot-Coms, and AI 24:56 AI Investing, Speculation, and Bubble Pricing 26:53 AI as the Next Internet and Technological Integration 30:53 Amazon, Spillover Innovation, and Unexpected Winners 37:22 Consumer Power, Corporate Fear, and Market Discipline Learn more about your ad choices.

Caller Questions & Discussion: Becky discusses how our culture has become obsessed with certainty, but we must ensure that the need for certainty doesn't replace our dependence on God. My husband and I have been separated for six years due to his abuse, and he is now seeing someone else. What should I do? My firstborn daughter died from fentanyl five years ago, and I'm still in complete shock. How can I cope? My mom says she won't attend my daughter's Quinceañera if we play secular dance music. What's the best way to handle this? What should I do if my 35-year-old daughter struggles with serious mental health challenges and even threw a plate at me? How can I motivate my aging father? He doesn't shower, drinks alcohol, and rarely changes his clothes after my mother died 3 years ago.
In this episode, I talk to author, professor, and mentor, Norma Elia Cantu about her one of her latest works, Fiestas en Laredo: Matachines, Quinceañeras, and the George Washington's Birthday Celebration.

In this episode, we chat with Diana Leon-Boys— Assistant Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Department of Communication Arts—about her lifelong work examining the navigation of girlhood through a Latinx lens. Her book Elena, Princesa of the Periphery: Disney's Flexible Latina Girl extends conversations about minority representation and the complex relationship it has with child development. We host a dialogue between Diana's research and Henry's observations about boyhood in his book Where the Wild Things Were: Boyhood and Permissive Parenting in Postwar America. We discuss how both scholars pull from their own personal experiences growing up in America and how they interacted with their childhood media. We explore how the proliferation and production of children's and family media shape ideas of adolescence. Diana and Henry relate this back to their roles as parents within an ever-evolving media landscape where funding for educational children's content is dwindling. They further discuss how representation within media has changed over time and minority groups' relation to it. This is where Diana brings in her newer projects about depictions of Quinceañeras and Día de los Muertos in TV and films. We are left to ask what the politics of childhood are and what reforms can be done with current children's media. Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:Academic TextsDiana Leon-Boys:Elena, Princesa of the Periphery: Disney's Flexible Latina GirlQuinceañeras: Latinidades and Girlhood in Popular CultureHenry Jenkins:Where the Wild Things Were: Boyhood and Permissive Parenting in Postwar AmericaThe Children's Culture Reader“Just a Spoonful of Sugar: Permissive Child-Rearing and Walt Disney's Mary Poppins”“‘You've Got to Be Carefully Taught': The Whiteness of Permissive Culture”MIT Salute to Doctor SeussInterview about the bookOthers:Centuries of Childhood: A Social History of Family LifeKids in the Middle: How Children of Immigrants Negotiate Community Interactions for Their FamiliesLatina Teenhood: Intersectionalizing subjectivities in the post-network era.Crafting Public Opinion: The Effectiveness of China's Media Control Policies under Xi JinpingMade to Play House: Dolls and the Commercialization of American Girlhood, 1830-1930 Advice Books:The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child CareDare to Discipline People, Places, Toys, and HolidaysPhilippe ArièsDr. Vikki KatzDía de los MuertosQuinceañerasBenjamin SpockMargaret MeadDr. SeussFred RogersStephanie PérezRaquel Reyes [American Girl Doll]Samantha Parkington [Doll]Julie AndrewsWalt DisneyDisneyland and Disney WorldPaper DollsFDRSigmund Freud Shows, Films, and Other MediaPee-wee's PlayHouseDennis the Menace [59-63' show, Comics]Leave It To BeaverThe Cosby ShowOne Piece [Anime, Manga, Live Action]Disney+EncantoCocoSnow White [Animated, Live Action]Little Mermaid [Animated, Live Action]Chinese State Media sounded like Fox MediaRogue OneSesame StreetGordita ChroniclesBaker and the BeautyBlueyDescendants film franchiseOn My BlockWednesdayMary PoppinsSaludos AmigosHarry Potter film seriesDora The Explorer The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T.Mad Magazine Classic IllustratedGabby's DollhouseQuinceañeras episodesSuper Sweet 16Wizards of Waverly PlaceDora the Explorer NewsDefunding of PBS Quinceañeras in ProtestOne Piece Flags in Indonesia ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Share your thoughts via Twitter with Henry, Colin and the How Do You Like It So Far? account! We somehow got media credentials (shoutout to Natalie) and made our way to the USATF Indoor Championships—but not without a classic NMO logistical whoopsie.Once in, we witnessed elite track & field action, learned about the true athleticism of race walking (which we're officially rebranding as Thunder Strike), and got to chat with some legends, including Olympic gold medalist Dawn Harper-Nelson, shot put gold medalist Chase Jackson and pole vault champ Katie Moon—who may or may not have named her pole Paul.Back at our hotel we had an unexpected VIP hotel tour that quickly spiraled into a full-on quinceañera experience. Also in this episode: Erin's kids experience their first track meet, make some friends with other media, and ask hard hitting questions.Listen now and join the Thunder Strike movement.
