We speak to Anesti Vega, Executive Director of US Expeditions and Exploration (USX), a nonprofit scientific research agency dedicated to connecting military veterans with STEM field research opportunities. We partner with researchers that need data in remote/austere environments and recruit veterans with survival skills in those environments and help them continue a strong sense of purpose by launching expedition missions to collect that data. I started with the organization in 2018 as an expedition leader that launched the ocean research programming, was promoted to Director of Operations in 2019, and have been serving as Executive Director since 2020. A five-member mountaineering team of U.S. military, Veterans, and a physician from non-profit U.S. Expeditions and Explorations (USX) summited North America’s highest peak, Denali, Alaska, during a scientific research expedition to benefit the study of high altitude cardiology, May 14 to June 5, 2018. USX is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that enables the military and Veteran communities to impact STEM fields by conducting adventurous, scientific research across the globe. During USX’s Denali expedition, its team members wore Cardiac Insight, Inc.’s Cardea SOLO™ wireless electrocardiogram sensors to capture cardiology data and detect cardiac arrhythmias at high altitude. One of the members of the mountaineering team that went up Denali was Army Veteran Adam Storck. He is Head of Devices for M-KOPA Solar, overseeing new product development, delivery, and testing. Storck is from Seattle and resides in London and Nairobi, Kenya. He is a graduate of Garfield High School, Seattle (2005), UNC-Chapel Hill (2009), and Oxford University (2016). Adam is also a Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan (2010-2011, 2013). Adam joins Borne the Battle to talk about his experience climbing to the summit of Denali and the incredible work he is doing in Nairobi. He is another example of how Veterans go on to do amazing things following their military service.

Among many other things, Elyse served as the first female Fire Support Officer in Afghanistan and has helped spearhead the integration of female Soldiers into combat arms. After serving 5.5 years on active duty, Elyse is currently in the Army Reserves and lives in Washington, D.C. where she is completing her Master's at Georgetown University. She is an accomplished mountaineer, with expeditions on Everest, Denali, Rainier, Elbrus, Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, and peaks in the French Alps, Rockies, and Sierra Nevadas.   In this episode we discuss: Her military experience, and what it was like being the first female first support officer in Afghanistan. On May 24th, the USX team summited Mt. Everest amidst 100mph winds and treacherous conditions. The team included the first active duty soldier and second combat wounded veteran to summit. I will be speaking with the USX team co-founder, Command Sergeant Major Todd Burnett, regarding the team's amazing climb and their efforts to raise awareness for mental health challenges that soldiers face. It's a challenge that most people could not face. To bring awareness of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome) to the public, a group of American veterans created U.S. Expeditions and Explorations USX (@TeamUSX) non-profit organization. Command Sergeant Major Todd Burnett (retired) co-founder of the organization provides an update on Late Night Health. The organization is designed to help soldiers and other members of the military combat PTSD. The staggering fact is more military personnel have died from suicide due to PTSD than have died in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq. The climbing team consists of both active duty military personal as well as veterans who volunteered to bring this issue to the American people. On the team is retired Staff Sergeant Chad Jukes, who lost his right leg while serving as the lead gun truck commander on a supply convoy in northern Iraq. In the last few weeks a friend of Burnett ended his life due to the stress of PTSD. Burnett is continuing USX to save the life of the next veteran who feels his life is on the edge. PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by terrifying events with symptoms lasting months or even years later that interfere with quality of life, and can increase suicide risk if not addressed properly. On a happy note, one of the climbers, 1st Lieutenant Elyse Ping Medvigy was promoted to Captain on the climb. This is believed to be the first military promotion on Mount Everest.
