Vanessa Potter became a “human guinea pig” for science after a terrifying experience changed her life. After 16 years as an award-winning television producer, Vanessa found herself blind and paralyzed for a year following a neurological illness in 2012. A deep curiosity to better understand the mechanics of her mind propelled her down a new, science-communication path, resulting in collaborations with Cambridge neuroscientists and her first book, Patient H69: The Story of my Second Sight, (Bloomsbury, 2017)In 2015 Vanessa designed and produced an interactive, science-art exhibition that translated the public's mindful brainwaves into music and art. In 2016 she was invited to give a TEDx talk in Belgium about the project. Vanessa's next project was to spend 3 years wearing an EEG (electroencephalogram) headset that recorded her live brain activity; while she experienced 12 different meditation styles for a study with neuroscientists. This led to her second book, Finding My Right Mind: One Woman's Experiment to put Meditation to the Test (Welbeck, 2021)In 2021 Vanessa founded ParkBathe, a citizen science, green health initiative in collaboration with Derby University. The project encourages sceptics to experience a 1hr adapted version of forest bathing in urban parks and is funded by the National Lottery. (Forest bathing is walking mindfully in nature while using the senses). In the Spring of 2022, Papers publishing presented ParkBathe as an accessible and highly-effective post-Covid health model. Vanessa also produces and hosts the ParkBathe podcast.Vanessa has written for Mosaic Science, The Telegraph, Marie Claire, Good Housekeeping and has been featured in The Washington Post , The Times and CNN along with many other publications. She has appeared on BBC Radio Four, BBC Shortcuts and in countless podcasts and radio shows in the UK & USA. Vanessa has given talks to health organizations, charities and schools. She is partially sighted and lives in London, UK, with her husband and two children. To learn more, visit her website:  Vanessa PotterIf your feeling lead, you can Buy Me A Coffee on http://www.ajuicypearpodcast.comSupport the show

Imagine living your life exactly as you are today, and suddenly over the course of three days your sight continually deteriorates until you are completely blind. As you and the doctors try to figure out what is happening, you realize you also cannot stand up; paralysis is now setting in. This is what Vanessa Potter went through ten years ago. She went from a busy television producer to full-time healing from blindness and paralysis. She was able to not only overcome her health issues, but immersed herself in the world of mindfulness and meditation. Working with a researcher at Cambridge University, she created a groundbreaking experiment that allowed participants to view their brain waves through art. We talk about her journey in this episode. We also hit on scoliosis, brain wave states, different forms of meditation, and forest bathing. Welcome to another ParkBathe conversation where we dig down (literally) into nature and conservation. This episode features Dinosaur island and a fascinating area of research, namely,  paleo planting. I talk to Dr Lil Stevens from the National History Museum about the ancient-looking ferns found on "Dino island" inside Crystal Palace park. Dino Island got its name because it is found in the middle of the lake and is surrounded by famous (and super cool) dinosaur monuments. It's pretty hard to visit Crystal Palace and not be steered in the direction of these famous concrete beasts.Lil is the Collections Task Force Manager at the National History museum and is a paleo botanist who volunteers with the Friends of Crystal Palace Dinosaurs. That means Lil has lots to say about fossils, plants and "palaeoenvironments".  She starts by telling me the story of a rare fossil tree she found near her home.I loved chatting with Lil, she manages to bring prehistoric environments to life with passion and vigour. If you'd like to visit the park and see the dinosaurs (and ferns) up close check out the next open day talk hosted by https://cpdinosaurs.organd support their important conservation work.If you enjoyed this episode why not leave us a review and check out the other interviews in the ParkBathe series.Presented by Vanessa Potter, Edited by Melissa Green.Support the show

I really wanted to share this  interview. Although it was recorded just after the last lockdown, so much of what Louise talks about is relevant today. We discuss plant blindness - how 'not noticing' the evidence of nature around us renders us blind to the natural world. If we can learn to notice our local trees or wallflowers - even a hedge on the walk to work -  we start to forge a relationship with nature, which leads to pro-conservation behaviours. We discuss the relationship children have to nature and how critical it is to introduce them at an early age and how that changes from culture to culture and from exposure at a young age.Packed full of thoughtful insights and information I promise you will feel inspired and hopefully motivated to get out into your local park :)Do subscribe and connect with us on social media, email us on parkbathe@gmail.com and leave us a review ! https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/natural-englandProduced by Vanessa Potter and Edited by Melissa Green.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/VanessaP)

Finding Your Right Mind — with Vanessa Potter

Happy new year and welcome to  this new episode investigating everything you need to know about our sensory system and how we see, hear and feel when we're out in nature...Forest bathing is simply walking mindfully in nature while absorbing the woodland atmosphere – but of course – it's so much more than that, and we can't delve into the benefits of being in nature without talking about  our incredible senses.Humans have five basic senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste and so we take a whistle top tour of each giving you fun facts, science and interviews. Did you know we can detect trillions of different scents and that scientist have found that leaves can tell us when they're dehydrated? But we often overlook our sensory system, which is why we're going to talk about how our attention gets hijacked, auto pilot, attentional fatigue and the science of attention restoration (which is the amazing way nature restores our senses) We also look at why stress affects vision, how hearing in a certain way can be a game-changer for some - and lots more !This week's bonus track contains some really cool ways to use urban environments along with green spaces to boost creativity and open up your mind in a whole new way! so check that out. If you want to have a go at forest bathing yourself in the park check out our bonus audio guide, available in this series.  LINKS:https://www.otherwaystowalk.co.ukhttps://www.streetwisdom.orghttps://tfb.institutehttps://www.natural-inclusion.orghttps://blogs.uoregon.edu/richardtaylor/https://hubermanlab.comWritten and produced by Vanessa Potter, editing by Melissa Green. Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/VanessaP)

Finding Your Right Mind — with Vanessa Potter

Series 3 has arrived with a super exciting new citizen science health project called ParkBathe ! What is ParkBathe?  Earlier this year I created a new health intervention based on Forest Bathing with Kirsten McEwan, a researcher at Derby University. Kirsten researches Forest Bathing (which is simply mindful walking in nature while absorbing the atmosphere) We combined Kirsten's knowledge of this Eastern social prescription with my own production and meditation advocacy work and created an urban park-based model that is accessible and easy for anyone to learn. We especially wanted to appeal to people who were sceptical of anything that appeared woo-woo or new age. Kirsten and I met when I interviewed her in series 1 (check out her insightful episode on compassion !) and ParkBathe has become a project we are both passionate about. We're grateful to be funded the National Lottery and to have support from the Upper Norwood Library Hub who helped us make this film.  In this first episode we get into exactly what Forest bathing is — because just saying it's ‘mindful walking in nature' doesn't cut the mustard. I explain how losing my sight in 2012 led me to develop to a new relationship with the natural world and how walking in nature was an integral part of my recovery. It was that knowledge that informed this project. Nature benefits us in so many weird and wonderful ways — and we plan to reveal how it does that with the help of nature and forest bathing experts. I was delighted that world renowned scientists such Dr Qing Li and Dr Yoshifumi Miyazaki agreed to share both their research and wisdom on Forest Medicine with me. You'll also hear from some of the ‘ParkBathers' who came on the walks Kirsten and I ran in Crystal Palace Park this autumn so you'll hear for yourself if 1 hour of slow, mindful walking did anything to alleviate their stress and anxiety...If you'd like to experiment with forest bathing for yourself — check out my FREE bonus audio guide that you can use in your local park.  Useful links: Kirsten's paper on UK Forest Bathing What is Shinrin Yoku? Dr Qing Li's book Dr Mayazaki's book Dr Yasu Kotera's paper on Forest Bathing Forestry England INSTAGRAMFACEBOOKTWITTERLINKEDINWritten  and produced by Vanessa Potter. Vanessa went from a high octane career as a TV producer to becoming blind and paralyzed overnight. Her journey back to health resulted in her pulling on mental resources she'd learnt previously such as techniques from hypno-birthing. Demonstrating the power of psychology in action - since then she's been on a mission to understand more about the impact of meditation on the mind. Vanessa has worked with Cambridge University on ground breaking projects even venturing into the world of psychedelics. To hear more about Vanessa's incredible journey tune in to this week's episode of the Dot to Dot podcast. Author, TEDx speaker & meditation advocate, Vanessa Potter used the trauma of losing her sight following a rare illness as an extraordinary visual rebirth. She became curious to understand the mechanics of her brain embarking upon a ‘meditation road trip' exploring 10 ways to train her mind as neuroscientists recorded her brain activity. Author, TEDx speaker and meditation advocate, Vanessa Potter became a “human guinea-pig” for science when an extraordinary experience changed the course of her life. After spending 16 years as an award-winning producer, fate intervened In October 2012 when Vanessa suddenly found herself temporarily blind and paralysed following a neurological illness. A deep curiosity to better understand the mechanics of her mind propelled her down a new, science-communication path. A number of science-art collaborations with Cambridge neuroscientists led to an immersive EEG exhibition. Vanessa publishes her second book, Finding Her Right Mind: One Woman's Experiment to put Meditation to the Test in April 2021 through Welbeck. She lives in London, UK with her husband and two children.   How did Vanessa lose sight in 2012 and what did that lead her to experiment with and tackle problems like sleep, anxiety and stress?   Specific sleep issues are based upon triggers. What are triggers? How might it be unique to each person? How is this linked to trust?   What was Vanessa's sleep experiment? What did she learn from this experiment where she recorded live brain activity as she explored self hypnosis and mindfulness?   How might someone use bad sleep as a means to investigate and tease out those hidden and unhelpful beliefs?   Using self hypnosis for insomnia before potentially triggering events had incredible results but it also did not fully resolve Vanessa's sleep issues. What did it teach her?   With all these experiments that she has done on herself which also provides us with evidence based discoveries in the field of self hypnosis, what does she share for all of us who are struggling with poor sleep?   What did she learn from her discoveries and finding some profound realisations regarding different modalities including Vipassana, Buddhist meditation, mantra, TM, psychedelics, hypnosis, breath work, kundalini yoga, and mindfulness?   What did the psychedelics do for her mind?   When it came to sleep, she found that one of these was the clear winner. SUMMARY Patient H69: The Story of My Second Sight, Vanessa Potter’s memoir, captures her journey from light to dark and back again. Within 72 hours, Potter moves from keeping up the high-paced lifestyle of a freelance TV producer and mother of two small children to being blind and paralyzed in a hospital bed. Having suddenly contracted NMO (an extremely rare neurological disorder that affects the optic and spinal nerves), Potter becomes both deeply curious and fiercely determined to get better. So, enlisting a team of neuroscientists, she provides real-time data to help solve the mystery illness. KEY POINTS Sensory loss – the official term for what Potter experienced – completely disorients Potter to the point she didn’t know if she was up or down or where she was. She couldn’t feel where she was! The very information we live our lives by shuts down. Meditation is a reflex. Her visual sanctuary is a beautiful beach, which, by seeing in her mind, keeps her visual system alive. Our brain does the business of seeing. Creating audio recordings then later blogging her story in real time become therapeutic. Potter’s narration turns into critical scientific data. Deep curiosity propels her to seek medical answers. “Patient H69” becomes her pseudonym for her writing and blog. She “piggybacks” the vision of everyone who walked in the room to “see,” and her knowledge filled in the gaps. Her children’s touch is “medicine in a bottle” for Potter. Children naturally lavish touch and have an intuition about what to do when they walk in the room. Before being released from the hospital, Potter has to pass the “tea test” to make sure she has sufficient coping strategies at home. Humor is a resource—buying her time and helping her relax. Potter’s experience corroborates years of visual science—the inside of vision. Collaborates with Cambridge University scientists on EEG project to help others see how their mindful brainwaves convert into music and art. QUOTES FROM POTTER “I remember one time asking my husband, ‘This might sound like a crazy question, but am I still here?’” “Meditation was my lifeline because this was one of the most active things I could do—given I couldn’t move, I couldn’t feed myself—so the meditation was a very, very powerful resource to have inside my mind.” “I was so determined that we were going to see this through and that I was not going to be coming home [from hospital] until I was better.” “The U.K. has the most amazing NHS (medical system), but you have to fight for it.” “Physical closeness was not only a way of being physically close [to visitors] but also communicating with them…a soft warm hand holding my hand says a thousand words.” “We think we’re often helpless…[but] even in the worst situations, you have a choice…which leads to opportunity…I’ve learned to carve opportunity in the darkest place because then the rewards are so much more.” Don’t miss “Part 2: Diary of the Science” to learn how Potter now applies what she’s learned!
