Have you ever marveled at the transient beauty of a forest floor carpeted in violet-blue? My recent trek through the Hallerbos forest in Belgium was just such an experience, where the annual bluebell bloom transformed the landscape into a living fairytale. Join me as I recount this awe-inspiring journey, leaning on insights from Nana van der Poel that capture the historical enchantment of these woods. I discuss the delicate balance of timing needed to witness the bluebells and our vital role in preserving nature's fleeting wonders by treading lightly, staying on marked paths, and keeping the magic alive for generations.Embracing the serenity of nature, the episode also delves into the transformative power of forest bathing and how it's reshaping our understanding of health and well-being. Discover the profound effects of phytoncides, as highlighted by Dr. Qing Li, and learn how these 'essences of trees' can imbue even urban dwellings with the healing touch of the forest. Reflecting on the calming passages of Psalm 23, I share how nature's embrace provides a respite from life's tumult and a conduit to connecting with a higher sense of peace. Listen in for stories of unplanned family adventures and rejuvenation among the trees, and receive a heartfelt blessing inspired by the tranquil beauty of a bluebell-laden forest.Read Time Magazine: https://time.com/5259602/japanese-forest-bathing/Support the showBegin Your Heartlifter's Journey: Visit Heartlift Central on Substack. In today's episode I have the pleasure of welcoming back Dean Hall (www.thewildcureway.com) to the show. Dean and I explore how movement may help harness the superpowers of the brilliant ADHD mind.    About Dean   Dean has been a licensed clinical therapist and coach for over 30 years. Astonishingly, in that time he has conducted over fifty thousand face-to-face, one-hour sessions.    Besides being a best-selling author, and highly sought-after speaker, Dean is also a two-time cancer survivor, widower and two-time world record-setting extreme distance swimmer. He is the first person to swim the entire 187-mile length of Oregon's longest river, the Willamette River, (which he did as an active cancer patient) in 2014, and Ireland's longest river, the River Shannon (180 miles), in 2017.    This much time spent immersed in the flow of mighty rivers has changed Dean's life in many dynamic and miraculous ways. His Willamette River swim threw Dean into radical remission unexpectedly healing his leukemia without chemo or radiation while easing his trauma and grief from losing his wife fifteen days before their thirtieth anniversary. Buoyed by his firsthand experience of the healing power of nature when his lymphoma worsened and doctors once again pushed him to do chemo and radiation Dean chose to try Forest Bathing first. Dr. Qing Li's research on the proven efficacy of time spent in forests and how it boosted NK (Natural Killer) cells and the immune system by over two-hundred and fifty times for a period of two weeks gave Dean the courage to decide instead for a weekly regimen of forest bathing instead. In May of 2015, he started spending all day once a week forest bathing deep in the Mt. Hood Wilderness and by March of 2016 he was declared cancer free.   These gifts of natural healing pushed Dean to make it his organization, The Wild Cure Way, whose mission is to encourage the world to get out of concrete jungles, manmade boxes and away from digital devices and dive into wild waterways and venture into deep forests as a form of authentic deep healing and, oddly enough, environmental protection. He believes it's impossible to swim in wild waters or amble through ancient forests without falling in love with them and like Jacque Cousteau used to say, “You protect what you love.”

In episode 2 of the ParkBathe series we provide a comprehensive low-down of the mind-boggling  science of forest bathing. Here we dive into why forest bathing (which is simply walking mindfully in nature while absorbing the woodland atmosphere) is really, really good for us. We offer practical and easy ways to bring nature's benefits into your home — so check out the bonus episode !Kirsten McEwan and I started ParkBathe in March this year and have provided 1 hour guided forest bathing sessions in Crystal Palace Park to over 175 people as part of a citizen science initiative funded by the National Lottery. Today I talk to world renowned researchers in the field of forest medicine, Dr Qing Li from Tokyo's Nippon Medical School and Dr Yoshifumi Miyazaki from Chiba University.  We look at how our bodies cope with modern-day stresses like work pressures or worries at home. We hear from Joanna Bristow-Watkins, a forest bathing guide, on how our nervous system regulates chronic stress and how forest bathing can decrease the amount of cortisol (the stress hormone) that our bodies secrete. We even get into the weird and wonderful world of natural killer cells and what these strange-sounding white blood cells do to combat cancer.  We hear from Dr Yasu Kotera at Derby University and Stefan Batorjis, a Forest Bathing guide and trainer.  Dr Kotera gives a useful understanding of how the East and West each view ‘medicine' in quite different ways and he explains the common understanding within cross-cultural psychology that the eastern philosophy of medicine bases it (as claimed by many cross-cultural psychologists such as Nisbett e.g., in his book The Geography of Thought) in a more holistic, less directive manner. So, sit back, put your feet up and prepare to be blown away by how trees and plants provide beneficial chemicals that we breathe in and what positive impact this has upon our immune system. We promise, it'll change the way you view your local green space.  Useful links: Kirsten's paper on UK Forest Bathing What is Shinrin Yoku? Dr Qing Li's book Dr Mayazaki's book Dr Yasu Kotera's paper on Forest Bathing Joanna Bristow Watkins  Forestry England LINK to ParkBathe FILMINSTAGRAMFACEBOOKTWITTERLINKEDINWritten and produced by Vanessa PotterSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/VanessaP)

Finding Your Right Mind — with Vanessa Potter

Series 3 has arrived with a super exciting new citizen science health project called ParkBathe ! What is ParkBathe?  Earlier this year I created a new health intervention based on Forest Bathing with Kirsten McEwan, a researcher at Derby University. Kirsten researches Forest Bathing (which is simply mindful walking in nature while absorbing the atmosphere) We combined Kirsten's knowledge of this Eastern social prescription with my own production and meditation advocacy work and created an urban park-based model that is accessible and easy for anyone to learn. We especially wanted to appeal to people who were sceptical of anything that appeared woo-woo or new age. Kirsten and I met when I interviewed her in series 1 (check out her insightful episode on compassion !) and ParkBathe has become a project we are both passionate about. We're grateful to be funded the National Lottery and to have support from the Upper Norwood Library Hub who helped us make this film.  In this first episode we get into exactly what Forest bathing is — because just saying it's ‘mindful walking in nature' doesn't cut the mustard. I explain how losing my sight in 2012 led me to develop to a new relationship with the natural world and how walking in nature was an integral part of my recovery. It was that knowledge that informed this project. Nature benefits us in so many weird and wonderful ways — and we plan to reveal how it does that with the help of nature and forest bathing experts. I was delighted that world renowned scientists such Dr Qing Li and Dr Yoshifumi Miyazaki agreed to share both their research and wisdom on Forest Medicine with me. You'll also hear from some of the ‘ParkBathers' who came on the walks Kirsten and I ran in Crystal Palace Park this autumn so you'll hear for yourself if 1 hour of slow, mindful walking did anything to alleviate their stress and anxiety...If you'd like to experiment with forest bathing for yourself — check out my FREE bonus audio guide that you can use in your local park.  Useful links: Kirsten's paper on UK Forest Bathing What is Shinrin Yoku? Dr Qing Li's book Dr Mayazaki's book Dr Yasu Kotera's paper on Forest Bathing Forestry England INSTAGRAMFACEBOOKTWITTERLINKEDINWritten  and produced by Vanessa Potter.

“Some people study medicine. Some people study forest. I study forest medicine”. Dr. Qing Li (MD, PhD) is a medical doctor at Nippon Medical School in Tokyo and the world’s leading expert in forest medicine and immunology. He studies all the ways in which walking in the forest can improve our well-being. In 2018 he published “Shinrin-Yoku. The Art and Science of Forest Bathing – How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness”. This bestselling book had been translated into 25 languages and an increasing number of Forest Bathing centres and Forest Bathing coaches can be found all over the world. His most important message to listeners: “Forest Bathing cures Covid-19”. But what is Forest Bathing? How is this different from ‘just’ walking in the forest? What are the benefits? What kind of research and data is available (we talk for example about the effect of phytoncides) and how can we incorporate this insights to experience the positive effects on mindset, stress levels, immune system and sleep? Even if you can’t go outside? Check the YouTube video for subtitles or this link for the transcript: https://transformatie-podcast.nl/118-dr-qing-li (there you will also find links to Dr. Qing Li’s research, mentioned books and information on how to contact him). The beautiful open-hearted soul that is Erica Galia teaches us the importance of cultivating heart-centered living and where to start. Prior to this conversation, we were lucky enough to experience Erica’s incredibly supportive connection sessions first-hand and could not wait to hear her story. Erica’s sessions include guided meditation, therapeutic channeling, energetic release, heart connection, and left us wanting more. Lets just say, we need more humans like this in the world. Topics We Discuss: Open-Heart Living Connection Meditation In the Episode, We Learn: Kindness was instilled in her at a young age. She started getting panic attacks when she worked in advertising. That getting laid off forced her to explore what she really wanted to do with her life. Why she started meditating and developing mindfulness. How, as a society, we have been disconnected from our heart the effects of that. The collective can truly transform when we all live a heart-centered life. The first step to connection is connecting with yourself. What connection sessions are and how they cultivate heart-centeredness. She meditates on her client’s energy and pulls Inner Compass cards before she meets with them for a connection session. She follows-up a connection session with a connection footprint to help you continue the work on your own. Your heart can pick up someone’s energy/vibration from up to 5 feet away and then that energy/vibration is sent to the brain for further processing, which is where judgments can come in. Where someone can start when first embarking on meditation. She offers meditation and connection sessions. She co-created a meditation collective called Rooted Beings, which offers meditation courses that you can do on your own. In this episode I spoke with Qing Li who started her story off by reminding us that not taking a risk is a risk in itself. Wise beyond her years, Qing's investment in self discovery after a successful, but extremely stressful English Channel swim, is sure to pay dividends in whatever she pursues next in swimming and in life. Qing was so open, honest, and shared so many pearls of wisdom throughout our conversation - I laughed, cried, and found myself wondering if I was doing enough in my own life as she reminded me, "Don't let anything get in the way of what you love, not even yourself." Qing's positivity is infectious, and I just love her energy, enthusiasm, and emotion. In her own words: I am a lifelong swimmer and owes my success in completing the Triple Crown to the people who believed in my crazy ideas. Swimming the English Channel was a seed of an idea as a teenager that started a deep personal and spiritual journey for me. Starting with the English Channel in 2011 and coming back to round out the Triple Crown and Grand Slam with 20 Bridges - 2018, Tampa Bay Marathon Swim - 2019, and Catalina Channel - 2019. Through this journey I can say that the open water swimming community has truly taught me so much about believing in myself, living with purpose, and letting go of fear.I strive to inspire people from all walks of life to reach just a little higher and push the boundaries of their comfort zone. I love seeing the joy of someone who accomplishes something they never thought they could. If you'd like to be a guest on Marathon Swim Stories, mailto:shannon@intrepidwater.comStay in touch by joining our email list at http://intrepidwater.comJoin a supportive group of limit pushers at The Marathon Swimming Collective Music credit:Epic Inspiration by Rafael KruxLink: https://filmmusic.io/song/5447-epic-inspiration-License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Swimming sounds courtesy of swimmer Todd Lantry.

Well, I don’t know where you are but I am guessing that one of the biggest questions you’ve been asking yourself lately is about self-care. How do you take care of yourself if you are socially distancing or taking care of the others for weeks or months on end? What tools can you use? As the world is shifting, how do we all make sure you are taking care of our personal well-being? My mental health is being challenged right now and I am guessing yours may be, too. Well, today I bring you the very first virtual chapter of 3 Books, featuring Dr. Qing (pronounced “Ching”) Li all the way from Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Li is the world’s foremost authority in forest medicine. A medical doctor at Tokyo’s Nippon Medical School, he has been a visiting fellow at the Stanford University School of Medicine, and is the founding chairman of the Japanese Society for Forest Medicine. He’s also the author of several books including the international bestseller Forest Bathing: How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness. I am so grateful that the kind and generous Dr. Qing Li accepted my invitation to come on 3 Books. I hope you find the conversation as informative and inspiring as I did. Let’s go!  What You'll Learn: How do you take care of yourself during these uncertain times? What is forest therapy? What are the immune-boosting properties of being in nature? What are great books to build your leadership and capacity for hard work? How can you benefit from forest bathing in a city or while stuck inside? She has also been honored with multiple teaching awards, including ones from the Union City Symphony and the Korean Radio Broadcast Network. In addition to being on the faculty of the Pre-College Division of the Manhattan School of Music, she has a large private studio in the New York City metropolitan area where she teaches violin performance to aspiring players from ages 3 to 23. Her students have won national and international competitions and have performed in such great halls as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, and the White House. They are routinely accepted, with scholarships, to the world's premier music conservatories including The Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, the Juilliard School, Peabody Conservatory, Rice University, the Royal College of Music, and The Cleveland Institute.  Her students routinely perform with orchestras around the NYC area.  The NY Times described Ms. Faidley as “…fiercely yet compassionately committed to her students, to her colleagues, and to the art of music.” Ms. Faidley became adjunct faculty at the Hartt School before the age of 30, reflecting her devotion to the art of violin pedagogy. She has also served on the college conservatory faculties of Montclair State University's Cali School of Music and Hunter College's School of Music.  She holds a Master of Music degree in violin performance and pedagogy from the Peabody Conservatory of Music and was inducted into the professional music fraternity, Pi Kappa Lambda, which honors integrity, superior music performance, and academic success. Ms. Faidley routinely brings in major concert artists and teachers to give private masterclasses to her studio .  The last four years have included Ray Chen, Stefan Jackiw, Charlie Siem, Dmitri Berlinsky, Ronald Copes, Lisa Batiashvili, Sarah Chang, and Katie Lansdale. She won the prestigious Melissa Tiller Memorial Prize for graduate performance and while still a student at Peabody, joined the faculty of both the preparatory and conservatory divisions after serving as a teaching assistant to Shirley Givens. Besides Givens, her major pedagogical influences include Ivan Galamian, Joseph Gingold, Paul Rolland, and Shinichi Suzuki, and Rebecca Henry.  She also studied with such masters as Daniel Heifetz, Yuri Masurkevich, Christian Teal, and Qing Li. Ms. Faidley has served on the faculty of the Summit Music Festival, New York's premier summer chamber music institute. She has been invited to teach and give master classes in Italy, Germany, Spain, Russia, Norway, and Africa, and has provided private lessons in pedagogy to major violin performers and teachers throughout the United States.  In the summers, Ms. Faidley has specialized camps for her students. Ms. Faidley is a frequent presenter and master class clinician, and she has recently spoken at two national conferences for the American String Teachers' Association. The first lecture focused on balance in violin technique and pedagogy. The second presented a series of unique technical etudes for every stage of violin playing.  Ms. Faidley has been invited to be the keynote speaker, along with Nobel Laureates at the 2018 World Education Day in Jinan, China. Ms. Faidley currently employs fourteen violin and musicianship faculty members as part of her school, The Elizabeth Faidley Studio.  All students of any faculty member have access to recitals, masterclasses, private camps, and other performance opportunities.  Ms. Faidley works directly with each teacher in weekly consultations to ensure a balanced musical education for each student. Ms. Faidley also shares her passion for teaching through her writing. She has completed work on the second edition of a book for children titled “Pre-Twinkling to the Stars: Your Joyful Journey Begins” which focuses on a strong technical foundation for beginning violinists. Her second book, a beginning theory workbook for beginning and intermediate violinists, is also available. She has also published several essays in the American Suzuki Journal and is currently writing a third book on the art of pedagogy entitled, “What Happened to the Nurture?”  The book reflects her teaching philosophy, which seeks to empower the entire, unique person as the foundation of the musician. She generously makes time to mentor her students through auditions, competitions, and performances and stays in touch with them between and beyond studio lessons. Ms. Faidley's violin, a generous gift from several patrons, was crafted by Lorenzo Ventapane in 1835 and is pictured in Four Centuries of Violin Making by Cozio Publishing.   If you enjoyed the show, please leave a review on iTunes!  I truly appreciate your support! HELDENstunde. Für ein gesundes und bewusstes Leben.

Ein Spaziergang im Wald... tief durchatmen! Das tut uns gut. Seit Jahrtausenden.
