Oswald Spengler's 'The Decline of the West' is a two-volume work, which lays out a model of morphological history, whereby each culture is the result of the actualisation of its own great soul. These souls have their own life cycles, their own youth, adulthood, decline and death, which can be compared and predicted using Spengler's model. This week, we cover the first three chapters of the first volume of The Decline of the West, first published in 1918. We'll do future episodes on subsequent chapters. Episode 205. We read the first two volumes of the sci-fi Western comic East of West, from Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta. In a futuristic America broken up into different nation-states, three of the four horsemen of the apocalypse collaborate with a secret council of national leaders to enact a prophecy of destruction. The fourth horseman, Death, married and had a son with a human woman, and this child will be the harbinger of doom. Separated from his wife and trying to redeem his reputation for betrayal, Death travels the barren landscape in search of his son. The Whatnauts present The Review Show, a weekly book club style podcast for all sorts of pop culture. We cover a variety of genres and mediums — movies, TV shows, comics, anime, manga, audio dramas — picking out a specific piece of entertainment that we can cover in a week's time. This episode was recorded on May 6th, 2018 and sometime in the past! Our show this week is an odd one as we had a strange technical glitch half-way through. For the second half of the show, Tia and René have an in-depth discussion about the villians of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s an odd format, but it’s exciting! Todd and Taylor are both excited to talk about their respective books. In fact, Todd texted Taylor earlier in the week: "YOU. ARE. GOING. TO. LOVE. MY. COMIC. PICK." Taylor takes us back to East of West Vol 1 (which Todd has also read) -- the already-classic alternative future, apocalyptic, western sci-fi by Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta. Todd talks about Mary Wept Over the Feet of Jesus by Chester Brown -- a sophisticated Biblical argument disguised as simply-told stories from the Bible about prostitution and obedience. “East of West” is an amazing graphic novel series that artfully melds the science fiction and western genres. It’s a great fix if you need something to help hold you over between now and season 2. Craig along with a new voice to the podcast, Wil Heflin, review volume one of the series. They discuss the comic’s background (2:08), Death as a protagonist (9:53), their general impressions (13:22), the artwork (19:55), their favorite moments (26:07), the importance of Image Comics (30:14), and a nod to the small, independent comic shop (38:39).
If you have a hankerin’ for more of the science-fiction western genre, pick up a copy of “East of West, Vol. 1.” Created by writer Jonathan Hickman and illustrator Nick Dragotta, “East of West” is an incredible graphic novel series and as soon as you’re finished with the first one, you’ll want to read the rest. Craig Carter and Wil Heflin, a new voice on the podcast, give you a preview.

Люди, которые хорошо помнят 90-е, а особенно начало и середину, помнят сборники музыки "THE BEST FROM THE WEST".
