Today my guest is Brooke Wyckoff. This past year, Brooke had the opportunity to serve as our Interim Head Coach while our regular head coach Sue Semrau took a single-season leave of absence to care for her mother (her mother is thankfully in remission from ovarian cancer). Not only did Brooke gain experience as a first-time head coach (after 10 years of being an assistant coach), she also tried to be another mouthpiece to speak out about various motherhood issues (work-life balance, the lack of quality maternity leave, encourage other Mothers that they can be a Division I Head Coach AND raise a family). Back in 2014, Brooke co-founded an organization called Moms in Coaching. This is a support group for mothers who are coaching but are unsure if they can be full-time coaches and full-time moms. The motto lately from Brooke is that You can do both. Brooke has a beautiful seven-year old girl named Avery who was born in Nov. 2013. When Brooke was pregnant, she searched around campus for other Moms in athletics that she could bond with during her pregnancy, but there weren't very many. That's why she began to start her organization and make it more national. In this episode of The Hyperfast Agent Podcast, host Dan Lesniak speaks with Brooke Tate, an agent from the Keri Shull Team. Brooke started out as a partner agent on a mini-team, and is on pace to do $20M in volume in only her third year in the real estate game! Episode Highlights:  Brooke's love for real estate was sparked when she worked as a transaction coordinator at another brokerage. With a background in Molecular Biology and English, joining the real estate industry was a massive jump. Brooke is very analytical and detail-oriented from her education in Molecular Biology. When Brooke first started, she was able to take qualities from other agents to develop her skills. Tag teaming clients with her team leader allowed Brooke to build her skills through the mini-team concept. The mini-team concept is a great way to build a team and build-up your top earners. Hardcore experience in a fast environment allowed Brooke to grow at an incredibly fast rate. Brooke has a better handle on the process than the solo-agents that started at the same time as her. A mini-team consists of bringing on junior agents, one at a time until they are able to do so many deals a year. Now, there is another junior agent which allows Brooke to go do her own thing while keeping that team environment. Starting at the bottom to selling over 50 homes a year was very exhausting and overwhelming at points for Brooke. Brooke had to acclimate herself to exhaustion and stay organized at the same time. There's going to be a learning curve when making the switch from a salary job to one that is based on sales. Brooke's first client meeting on her own was exhilarating, but she acknowledges that she was filled with doubt beforehand until she got to the meeting. Clients did not know how to view Brooke when she was presenting as a team with Amy. Trust is vitally important within the mini-team concept in order to get past any self-confidence issues that might arise. Branching out on her own, Brooke has to remain very self-motivated while still getting support from her team. Next year, Brooke wants to do 40 personal transactions, and as a mini-team, would like to do 120 transactions. Joining as a partner agent is beneficial for those that can pick the right agent. New real estate agents need to have a strict system for organization so that they don't lose focus. Experienced agents that are closing 2-3 deals a month would benefit from hiring a partner agent. Brooke's biggest challenge as an agent was finding her own rhythm. When she's not selling homes, Brooke enjoys spending time in nature and meditating. 3 Key Points: An educational background in Molecular Biology and English gave Brooke the analytical skills necessary to be successful as a real estate agent. The mini-team concept allowed Brooke to learn on the job in a fast-paced environment. There is no better way to learn than on the job. Joining as a partner agent allows someone to come on and learn the skills that they need to be successful while still having a steady income. Brooke Harris is the Founder & CEO of Goodmylk Co. While living in L.A., the supposed “health food capital” of the U.S., Brooke’s health deteriorated for a period of time. Brooke decided to turn to an alternative, plant-based diet as a form of healing medicine. But to her surprise, she found her effort to ‘eat healthier’ was actually making her sicker. Through research, Brooke found that many of the binders, thickeners, emulsifiers and preservatives in otherwise “healthy” food were unnecessary and unhealthy. It was then that Brooke realized that she would have to create that ‘something better’. Brooke began to experiment with real food recipes that led to her own health transformation, and she wanted to share her passion with others. She went on to create GOODMYLKCO., a game-changing, industry disrupting plant-based milk product for the masses. Of course, it was not all smooth-sailing. When Brooke initially presented her idea to industry insiders and investors, it was met with skepticism on all fronts. They told her there is ‘good reason’ companies with scale do things a certain way (read:compromise the integrity of the product). For Brooke, this was not an option. She was hellbent on better. After many months of trial and error, Brooke finally developed a proprietary flash-blast freezing technique that allowed her to scale without compromising the nutritional integrity or flavor of her plant milks. And now, GOODMYLKCO. plant milks will soon be available nationwide. I started whispering in her ear, but so quiet I wasn’t sure she could even hear me. It was more like making the words with my lips against her ear, but then just this tiny breath of air that was the sound.I said, “Brave girl, quiet girl.”She said it back to me, just as quiet, which really surprised me. She stopped her run-up to that big cry and whispered back to me, “Brave girl, kiet girl,” right in my ear. She didn’t really get the kw sound in quiet—I think she was too young to have gotten the hang of that sound--but anyway I knew what she meant so what difference did it make?Catherine Ryan Hyde’s 2020 novel, Brave Girl, Quiet Girl, begins with a violent car-jacking. Brooke, a divorced single mom is driving her mother’s  expensive Mercedes with her two year old daughter, Etta, strapped into her car-seat in the back, but she is dragged from the car by the thief, and watches helplessly as the car drives off with her daughter still strapped in.This occurs in the first few pages of this frightening and yet lovely book about Brooke, Etta, and Molly, a sixteen-year-old homeless girl.  Molly is with her also homeless male friend late at night when she spots Etta, still strapped in her car-seat on the sidewalk. With no phone, no money, and no idea how Etta got there, Molly is faced with the daunting challenge of returning the little girl to her family.I have sometimes put aside one of Hyde’s many novels because it seems just too sentimental, too sweet, too full of pathos. And this novel is certainly high on the pathos scale, and yet it captured me early on, gripped me, and I just could not stop reading it until I was finished.Molly is homeless and on the streets because she has been tossed out of her home in St. George Utah and told not to return unless, and until, she has shed the devil that she has brought into her family home. Molly, under pressure from her girlfriend, had decided to come out to her mother, and that is what her mother labels bringing the devil into the home.I won’t divulge much of the story here, but I will tell you that the reader is kept on tenterhooks during the early phases as Molly tries to care for little Etta and to hide her away from other street youths who intend to grab her from Molly and hold her for ransom. Molly had helped raise her two younger sisters, and so is a competent and loving caretaker, but with no funds for food or diapers for the toddler. After several very frightening events, Molly is finally able to race after a police car with Etta holding on for dear life, and thus begins the reuniting of Etta with her mother Brooke. Initially, Brooke is angry with the young girl, not understanding why she did not alert the police earlier or find a way to call Etta’s mother in spite of the fact that there is an amber alert out for her. The rest of the novel is devoted to the interactions of mother and daughter and the intervention of a sympathetic female police officer who firmly but gently leads Brooke into a better understanding of Molly’s heroic actions in saving Etta. Although Brooke, herself, has a very troubled relationship with her own mother, she assumes that Molly must have done something horrible or unlawful to have provoked her mother in to forcing her from the home. She decides to drive from California to St. George to confront Molly’s mother, and to, hopefully, get Molly back into her family home. When Brooke finally confronts Molly’s mother and learns of her super-fundamentalist religious beliefs that treat homosexuality as a dreadful sin and a chosen life-style that can be discarded like a filthy cloak, she begins to reassess Molly and to try to care for her in something like the loving ways Molly has cared for Etta. While the plot is what drives this novel, it turns out to reveal a deep understanding of street-kids, and the many different reasons that people find themselves homeless and living on the streets. I find myself very impressed by both Hyde’s excellent story-telling and her desire to talk about social issues and the meaning of love.Baby Etta loves Molly from the start, and calls out Molly, Molly, Molly whenever she sees her. While it takes much longer for Brooke to begin to see the sterling qualities of Molly, the relationship that develops between the two women is heartening I suppose there will be some readers who find this book to be corny and much too sentimental, I thought it to be a beautiful story about love, and redemption.

Growing Your Business With A Virtual Assistant – Brooke Strauss-Dobi pt 1If you have a business, even a part time business, you know how important it is to maintain a social media presence. Add to that the need to respond to email inquiries. Plus coming up with content for email marketing, possible sales funnels (if you use them). Add in coming up with content to post to all of the social media sites you are part of. It can get to be overwhelming fairly quickly. You know you need to do these things. You know what it is you want to say. But it seems like every time you somewhat “schedule” the time to dive deep into these areas, something always seems to get in the way. Well, that is where my guest today can help out. She specializes in helping business folks to remain focused on running the business, while she and her team will handle all of the “little details” that can sometimes elude you. Brooke Strauss-Dobi is a Virtual Assistant at ButtaflySocial.com (https://buttaflysocial.com)   She and her team help busy businesses with their social media management, Facebook Ads, Funnel Management, Email Marketing, building Word Press websites, and will even help you with content writing if you need it. She prides herself on her excellent customer service record and she knows what is needed for you to succeed. She started off as a tech VA and branched out into website design, branding, greeting cards, T-shirt design and even sang in bands.   When Brooke is not working, she enjoys spending time with her daughter, and watching NetFix with her husband. Help me welcome to the program, Brooke Strauss-Dobi. Brooke, thank you for taking the time to join us today. The first question I always ask is this. Other than that short bio I just read, tell us in your own words, “Who is Brooke Strauss-Dobi?” How did you get started in the Virtual Assistant field? What made you decide to launch off into your own company? There are a variety of things that your company handles. Email management, calendar management, scheduling, just to name a few. What is the most “traditional” services you offer?  How can your services help, let’s say, pastors or ministries? I know we have a lot of business owners listening in. Many of them are full time at a “regular job” but are launching side businesses, mainly online. What kinds of services would you recommend they consider to help get back some of their time into their already busy schedules? When you are first contacted by a potential client, you schedule a brief phone call to identify their needs, etc. What type of information should someone be prepared to share with you on that phone call?  So they would not waste your time nor their time in “Oh, I haven’t thought of that and I have to get back to you” type of situation? Content writing. That is one of the services you offer. What does that entail? Is that like “ghost writing” for books, or simply social media posts…? If someone wanted to hire your team to handle routine customer service issues, etc., what type of services would that entail?  You would not be offering “tech support” type services, correct? What kind of business model would make the perfect candidate for your services? That is such a multi-faceted operation, correct? What about speakers? How do you help them? How do you help people in branding their business?  Folks, I don’t know about you, but Brooke has opened my eyes to an entirely new way to possibly getting a valuable resource back into our life. It’s called TIME. Routine tasks that she and her team can help you out with. Allowing you to focus on other matters. Like growing your business. Amen! I recommend you get in touch with Brooke over at Buttaflysocial.com (https://buttaflysocial.com) and see if they can help you out. The information is free but the possibilities are priceless. We talk about whether Facebook is really dead. Is it still possible to grow an audience on Facebook and actually get your content seen?  Brooke has grown her blog, Refabbed into a large DIY blog, coaching business, and online boutique in 4 years, mostly through her Facebook page, which currently has around 500K followers. Many people in our industry would tell you not to expend any efforts on Facebook; that it's a complete waste of time unless you want to “pay to play” through Facebook ads.  And while it's true that the algorithms aren't favoring bloggers or businesses the same way they used to, if you go into it with a specific strategy and you focus on engagement, you absolutely can build a community on Facebook and use it to grow your business.  Today's guest on the podcast, Brooke Riley, shares with us how she did it, and why Facebook was a great decision for her business. She also talks about how she has expanded her business from just a blog, and she shares her tips for folks just getting started.  Before we jump into our discussion though, I have to say that I have been having loads of fun over in my Facebook group.  I am in there all the time, chatting, going live, and helping you build your business. And the group is full of other bloggers, encouraging each other and answering questions.  If you haven't joined us yet, what are you waiting for? Come on over today and introduce yourself. We're all waiting on you! My guest, Brooke Riley, has grown her blog, Refabbed into a large DIY blog, coaching business, and online boutique in 4 years, mostly through her Facebook page, which currently has around 500K followers. Brooke has invested in her followers and built relationships with them, and now she has an audience that knows and trusts her.  Starting a Blog Even if You Don't Know What a Blog Is Brooke began her blog as a way to document and share the projects she was completing around the fixer-upper home she and her husband had purchased in western Kentucky.  At the time, Brooke admits, she wasn't even sure exactly what a blog was.  Even though Brooke was spending time creating content for her blog, and building relationships with her readers, email list subscribers, and social media followers, her pageviews weren't growing as quickly as she wanted. She knew she needed pageviews for ad income.  And income was definitely her goal from the beginning. She didn't know what types of income were typical for bloggers, but helping to provide for her family was her goal from day one. Over time, Brooke got to know her audience well enough that she was no longer 100% dependent on ad revenue. She began to experiment with affiliates and figuring out other ways to monetize. She learned what her audience really wanted from her, and that led to other streams of income. Creating Connections with Your Audience From the beginning, Brooke wrote her blog with the intention of being vulnerable and honest.  She wanted her audience to know her personally and she wanted to get to know them. Her vulnerability allowed her audience to connect with her on an intimate level.  When Brooke placed calls to action in her posts and emails, she worded them in a way that her audience would want to answer.  She also took time to respond to their replies in a way that made them feel validated and want to respond again.  Connecting with Your Audience on Facebook to Grow a Seven-Figure Business It's one of the most popular things to say right now... that Facebook is dead for bloggers and online business owners. But Brooke hasn't found that to be the case at all.  From the time she started her blog, Brooke focused on her Facebook page. Facebook was where she saw the most interaction and the most engagement with her audience.  Her page grew slowly, but she kept putting in the time and sharing with her followers there. After two years of working her page, Brooke realized that she wasn't connecting with her audience on FB the way she wanted to. And it was because even though she put out a ton of great content for them, they never saw her. They read her voice in her content, but her face wasn't something they experienced.  So, she began doing live videos on Facebook to build that connection with her audience.  Planning  a Facebook Strategy After a couple of years at this live video thing, you would suspect that Brooke has a special strategy that she uses to get as many people as possible watching.  Surely she plans out her live videos and lets her audience know exactly what day and time they will be, right? Nope.  Sometimes, she doesn't even know what she's going to talk about until 5 minutes before she gets on there. Brooke says it is important to know that you don't have to follow rules that somebody else has set. You need to do what works for you and what works for your community.  When Brooke first started going live, she would go live once every two weeks or so, but now she goes live once or twice a week.  Brooke aims to post at least 4 times per day on her Facebook page. It's not the end of the world if she doesn't get 4 posts up, but she does try to keep it active by posting regularly.   Brooke posts things that are relevant to her audience, from her blog or other creators her audience enjoys.  Brooke knows her audience well enough that she has been able to build other revenue streams and businesses based on their wants and needs.  Creating an Online Clothing Boutique One of these additional businesses is an online boutique for her female audience that is just about to hit 7 figures in revenue.  I realize that not everybody would think to start an online boutique, so I asked Brooke to share why she started it and how she knew it would work for her audience. She shared with me that she was getting so many questions about her appearance (her hair, clothes, and makeup), that she realized she could build an additional stream of income based on that interest. Brooke was doing all of the affiliate marketing she could based on her readers' requests, but it didn't take long to figure out that she was onto something.  She knew she needed to capitalize on the passion she felt for her style and her audience's love of it, so she decided to start a boutique selling the things she liked and then share those products with her audience.  Creating a Coaching Business A coaching business is something Brooke never dreamed she would do.  Brooke has a passion for teaching others how to do things. She enjoys showing her audience how to do the crafts she loves, how to dress in a way that they can express their true personalities, and even how to build an online business.  She totally didn't see herself as a teacher, however, she kept getting questions about Facebook, growing your audience, and making money online.  Her audience wanted to learn from her and they continued asking her to teach them. Even if you think you aren't the best at something or you don't really know how to teach it to someone else, you have a unique voice that others can appreciate and want to learn from.  Building a Team Brooke and her husband were the only ones running the business for the first 3+ years. For the first 9 months, Brooke still had a full-time job!  It's only been a little over a year ago that she hired her first employee.  Brooke eventually realized that she could not grow the business any larger without having outside help. There is only so much one person can do before they need outside help. Currently, Brooke has a full-time assistant whose sole responsibility is to work with her on the blog. Her husband, Brandon, came home full-time in May of 2019, and he works mostly on the boutique.  The boutique has a store manager and an additional full-time employee, as well as a part-time employee whom Brooke says is pretty close to full-time.  Brooke also hires outside contractors to handle things like Pinterest, etc.  What About Her Instagram Strategy?  Instagram is the hottest social media platform on the block for most online entrepreneurs right now.  Everyone is trying to grow their IG following and engage with their people over there, but until this past summer, Brooke had not focused on her Instagram.  Now that Brooke is spending more time on the site, her account is growing quickly.  Brooke likes that she can share even more behind-the-scenes stuff about her life with her Instagram stories. This allows her to continue to build that intimate relationship with her audience.  Advice: Don't Be Afraid to Break the Rules Brooke says that if she looks back on where she thought her blog would go and where it has gone, those two things would not be in the same neighborhood.  Running a business is not always something you can plan for. You can't predict the opportunities you may be presented with or where your path might take you. Sometimes you see a need that you can fill and your business is born from that.  Brooke strongly recommends that you hold your ideas loosely and not worry about “following all the rules” that other people set up. That's a great way to lose the fun of running your business. Trying to keep up with what everybody else tells you to do can cause you to lose that initial passion that inspired you to start your business.  Okay, I don't know about you, but isn't it just amazing how Brooke has been able to build such a huge community relatively quickly? Four years may not seem quick when you're in the middle of it, but she took her blog from zero to multiple businesses and over 7 figures in just 4 years. I find that incredible!  And she did it by being true to herself and authentic. She shared the things that she loved and took her audience along for the ride. Her audience relates to her and that allows her to serve them with content and products! Building a successful multi-million dollar business takes a lot of self-discovery and determination. Today’s guest, Brooke Castillo, started her career as a life coach 14 years ago and has since built a mega-successful and well-known school where she trains life coaches. But getting to this point hasn’t been without its challenges. When Brooke was a child, she wanted to be a teacher because she loved the thought of helping shape young people’s lives. As she grew older, going through some traumatic life experiences, and reading the inspiring Women Who Love Too Much, she decided to study psychology. Her psychology degree led her to a career, which in turn led her to discover life coaching, way before it was a popular subject. Brooke knew she found her true path when it felt like everything was falling into place. She was able to stay home to look after her growing children while still building her small empire as a life coach. But she also knew she had to expand her business if she wanted to be even more successful. When Brooke’s husband joined the business as her partner, the dynamic in their relationship changed. Especially as men are more often viewed as being the “breadwinner,” so to speak, to join a successful female-led business was a challenge, but one they both accepted and worked through together. For the past 7 years, together they have built The Life Coach School into what it is today. Building and managing a team is so different from being a one-woman show, and transitioning into this role presented Brooke with an opportunity to grow. She finds relief to any challenges she’s faced with the help of a confidential sounding board and group of women who support each other. Brooke has learned that in marketing, it’s so important to use trial and error to find what works for you and your business. She’s also discovered that in order to grow a business at a rapid rate, you need to plug almost all of your profits into marketing… which might sound counter-intuitive, but it works. Have you been thinking of transitioning from a solopreneur to entrepreneur? What challenges have you faced when working with your romantic partner? Do you have a marketing budget to help grow your business? In This Episode: How reading can open your eyes to career possibilities you previously never considered What if feels like to find your true calling How you can balance working on your own business while raising your children How transitioning to business partners affects your personal relationships What impact feminism has on having a male business partner What it’s like to go from being a solopreneur to building and managing a team Why trial and error is an important aspect of marketing Why you need a confidential sounding board to run ideas and problems by How spending money on marketing will help your business grow faster Why you have to work less, but more efficiently, to make more money   Quotes: “Psychotherapy was all about taking people who were non-functional and making them functional. And life coaches are all about taking people that are functional and making them function at a higher level.” (9:29) “Being able to maintain my craft and be the employee in my business and do all the things that I needed to do to serve my customers; but then it’s like another full-time job to actually run your company, and set it up properly, and market it, handle customer service.” (19:59) “Even taking the courses isn’t enough. Then you have to apply what you learned and fail at it so many times before you can end up being successful at it.” (21:02) “How much can I spend on marketing and still make a profit? The more I can spend on marketing my business, the faster I’m going to grow.” (23:08)   Links Find Brooke Castillo and The Life Coach School Online Find Brooke Castillo and The Life Coach School on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Listen to The Life Coach School Podcast Learn more about Entrepreneurial Bookkeeping   Join From Side Hustle to CEO on Facebook Keep up with everything Women In Business Follow me, Dr. Cortney Baker on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn KidsCare Home Health   Are you a female millennial entrepreneur who wants to start or scale your service-based business but not sure where to start? Brooke Siem is a true renaissance woman. She’s a professional chef (and Food Network Chopped Champion), world traveler (30+ countries), breathwork coach (more nasal breathing, please!), and grief/mental health advocate. Her broad range of life experience helps her to connect to clients while providing actionable tools that help them navigate the mental and emotional challenges of modern living. She believes in the power of using life’s triggers as a roadmap to healing, with self-awareness and self-compassion as the driving force for positive change. Brooke had been prescribed antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs at 15 years old after her father's sudden death. An unexpected  opportunity for a life abroad sparked the realization that she had been heavily medicated for half of her life. She decided to make a massive change. First, she booked a one way ticket to Malaysia. Then, she got off all the prescription drugs. Two years and 19 countries later, Brooke's primary focus is on advocating for mental health and wellness without the use of antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. Though she believes that these sorts of drugs can have their place on the road to healing, her own experience has taught her that these medications are often poorly monitored by doctors, prescribed without thought of the long term consequences, and prioritize the notion of "existing" versus thriving. Brooke's goal is to show that it is possible to live a joyful, centered life without the use of antidepressants, no matter how far down the rabbit hole we once were. We get into the backstory that lead to being on medication for a decade and a half, the catalyst to come off them, the process of doing that (and what she discovered about herself through that very difficult journey), and how she's lived her life since. Key Points from the Episode with Brooke Siem: Brooke had built a life in New York City around a bakery she found success at, but was also struggling with the demands of New York (and the costs of living there). Despite the bakery’s success, the cost of doing business in New York were so high that it made it hard to feel like you had real success. She found herself struggling to fit in and find her path or her opportunities, and was judging herself for not being able to find them in New York – a place with so many opportunities abounding. Seeing people in successful paths only compounded that as she felt inferior to these other people who seemed to know where they’re going, and the competitive nature within her made her feel like she wasn’t winning in the path she had created. When her bakery’s lease was coming up for renewal in 2017, her world changed. She got an opportunity through a program called “Remote Year” to travel around the world and work remotely with 70 other people in the program, and she went for it. The only trick was that her work – owning a bakery – wasn’t something she could do remotely. She figured she wouldn’t get accepted into the program anyway, so she didn’t let that stop her. She figured if she made it, she’d figure out how to make it work. And that’s what happened. She felt she was at such a low point that she new she needed to get out of her situation and would regret not doing it if she could. This all brought about another major change. When Brooke was 15, her father suddenly passed away, and she was subsequently put on a cocktail of drugs to manage the emotional impact. She went through all of life’s major, pivotal growth periods – adolescence, high school, college, entering the work world and becoming independent, without the drugs effecting her mind. As she was turning 30 and looking at this nomadic existence, she realized she wouldn’t be able to get her prescriptions refilled reliably, so she suddenly realized she needed to find a path off of them, which also helped her realize she had been on them half of her life already and that got her wondering who she would be without them. This sparked a very fast path to coming off the drugs so she would be clear by the time the trip came just six months later. As many of the drugs have long half-lives and withdrawals, this would be both tricky and intense. When this all started, she described her feelings as misery, suicidal and essentially just waiting to die. It went so far that she found an online life expectancy calculator, got a date when it said she would die, and put it in her calendar. She actually quoted the time remaining when we were talking. In the midst of this withdrawal, Brooke actually was chosen to compete on the cooking show, Chopped, which was incredibly hard in and of itself, but so much harder because of the emotional impact of the drug withdrawal. She actually went on to winning her competition despite what she was going through. She described seeing herself on the show as watching a twin who wasn’t her. Brooke touched on her competitive side, which manifested in a competitive dancing background when she was younger, which obviously served her well on Chopped (and other things in her life). She described coming off one of the drugs specifically, where her hearing became painfully heightened, making her hyper sensitive to everything around her (and NYC not being a particularly easy place to be that way). She described it as having all of these emotions and sensations bottled up for years, and then coming out all at once, which can feel unbearable. She described the feelings she had through her therapy approach while coming off the drugs, and this feeling like her real feelings had been stifled and she had a dream where a rope was being pulled from deep in her throat, and that symbolized a freeing. It lead her to need to go outside one night and scream at the top of her lungs to physically release all that was inside, which was a pivotal, transformative moment for her in facing all that was inside. Ultimately, the travel was a very clarifying thing for her because it helped her realize that the only constant in her life was her. She was able to completely isolate all of the variables in her life, which changed each time she moved to a new place, and found the way she could be the grounding center and could learn and grow in each place she went to. For example, with her heightened sensitivity to noise, traveling to Malaysia was incredibly difficult as the noise and bustle was even greater than in NYC. Had she not done that, she wouldn’t have gotten as good at dealing with the sensory-overload of life as she became after a month in Kuala Lumpur. Plastics: Talk to your butcher

Last week Ben and Brooke introduced a new four-part Monday series dealing with plastics. Specifically, how to use less of them in day to day life. They covered the Big 4 - straws, drink bottles, takeaway coffee cups and plastic shopping bags - and offered a whole heap of solutions to help you live a Plastic Free July (and August, and September and so on…)  This week they’re encouraging you to get a little awkward. When Brooke and Ben first started to make a concerted effort to reduce their plastic use it became clear quite quickly that it wasn’t going to simply happen. Providers weren’t going to read their minds, they weren’t going to offer plastic-free alternatives without any prompting, and they certainly weren’t going to know alternatives were desired at all unless people started the conversation. What they’ve learnt over the past 12 months of cutting back is that in order to see change, people need to be willing to make change. And sometimes that means being the weird one, having the awkward conversation, bringing your own bag to the bakery, explaining that you’re doing an experiment - whatever needs doing to gently start the movement. When Brooke and Ben had a last minute interview cancellation earlier this week, they thought it might be a good opportunity to do another hostful, but this time spend it digging a little deeper in to the parts of them you may not know about. Parts that might surprise you (or not) and parts they’re a little hesitant to share. They talk about secret habits and vain concerns. They dive in to little-shared talents and personality traits. They disclose some rather embarrassing admissions about farm-based gaming apps and also share their thoughts and reasons for using social media the way they do (and the way they don’t). So take a listen as Ben and Brooke reveal 10 things you may not know about them, including… What’s Ben’s dirty little secret? Which of them was addicted to My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic? Just how successful is Jackrabbit.FM? Has Brooke or Ben has recorded an album? Head over to http://www.slowyourhome.com/165 for the full post, and enjoy! ==== If you're enjoying the show and want to know how to best support it, leave a rating or a review in iTunes or head over to the Patreon page to help support the show financially. Listener Chat with Morgan

This week, we have a new Listener Chat with you, featuring librarian-teacher and all-round lovely person, Morgan. When Brooke put a call out on Facebook for Calgary-based listeners a couple of weeks ago, Morgan was the first to volunteer her time. A few days later they got to sit down at Brooke and Ben’s holiday apartment and chat for a couple of hours. There were two big themes that came out of this conversation - one being Morgan’s amazing literary brain. She has so many book suggestions and nuggets of wisdom drawn from her extensive reading, and you can find a list in the show notes. The second theme is that of living a values-based life, which has seen Morgan and her family make some massive changes over the past few years, all of which are aligned with their values and the kind of life they want to create for themselves. Head over to http://www.slowyourhome.com/66 for the full blog post, as well as links and show notes from today’s conversation.
