Pursuit With Purpose

Has anyone ever told you that you’re “too sensitive” or to “stop overthinking everything,” particularly by people who strike you as a little bit too insensitive or who you believe might benefit from some more thinking? Well, you may be what is known as a “highly sensitive person,” or HSP. Being HSP doesn’t mean you have a diagnosable condition, it’s a personality trait shared by just 20% of the population that involves increased responsiveness to both positive and negative influences. HSPs process experiences, thoughts, and feelings more deeply than non-HSPs — and with all that processing, overwhelm can happen more easily. We can all feel overstimulated from time to time, but for HSPs it's a way of life. And sometimes that can feel lonely, frustrating, and full of shame. ... But it doesn't have to! In this episode Brooke Nielsen, therapist, writer, speaker and founder of the Therapeutic Center for Highly Sensitive People, discusses what it means to be a HSP and how to appreciate the unique strengths that come along with this trait. In this episode you’ll hear: What is an “HSP” and how many people are born with this genetic trait [3:58]
How Brooke is destigmatizing the negativity around being an HSP, and why it’s feels so liberating for her to do this [10:11]
The way she coped with her emotions at a younger age and what was the impact of trying to do this [11:16]
Her thoughts on male ESPs and how each society views them differently [14:12]
What trauma really is, and the role that it plays in the lives of HSPs [22:01]
Why just focusing on your mindset and positive thinking isn’t enough to overcome trauma [35:44]
What research shows about people having compassion for others [41:01] Best practices for setting energetic boundaries as an HSP [49:43] What to be aware of an HSP in a relationship, and how to educate your partner in the right way [59:16] Tips for running a business as an HSP [64:15] Whether you’re a Highly Sensitive Person or think you might know someone who is, you’ll leave this episode with a deeper understanding of your emotions, empathy and the power that comes from understanding yourself. Brooke Harris is the Founder & CEO of Goodmylk Co. While living in L.A., the supposed “health food capital” of the U.S., Brooke’s health deteriorated for a period of time. Brooke decided to turn to an alternative, plant-based diet as a form of healing medicine. But to her surprise, she found her effort to ‘eat healthier’ was actually making her sicker. Through research, Brooke found that many of the binders, thickeners, emulsifiers and preservatives in otherwise “healthy” food were unnecessary and unhealthy. It was then that Brooke realized that she would have to create that ‘something better’. Brooke began to experiment with real food recipes that led to her own health transformation, and she wanted to share her passion with others. She went on to create GOODMYLKCO., a game-changing, industry disrupting plant-based milk product for the masses. Of course, it was not all smooth-sailing. When Brooke initially presented her idea to industry insiders and investors, it was met with skepticism on all fronts. They told her there is ‘good reason’ companies with scale do things a certain way (read:compromise the integrity of the product). For Brooke, this was not an option. She was hellbent on better. After many months of trial and error, Brooke finally developed a proprietary flash-blast freezing technique that allowed her to scale without compromising the nutritional integrity or flavor of her plant milks. And now, GOODMYLKCO. plant milks will soon be available nationwide. Today I'm sharing a special bonus episode in my Money Files series. This conversation centered around business finances and I talked to my client, Brooke who felt unsure of how to manage the financial aspect of her business. Brooke is a mom of two and a business owner. After two years in her business, she decided she needed to get her mind right with her business finances and start paying more attention to what money was coming in and going out. Not knowing exactly how much money was going in and out of business meant she wasn't able to pay herself a predictable salary or invest in her business without debt or worry. She saw how putting a plan in place for her money would help her to be able to achieve personal goals like giving back to her church, which motivated her to get her financial plans in place. In this episode, we talk about how knowing her numbers changed everything for her and allowed her the freedom (and peace of mind) to know that she could take calculated risks in her business. We explored what her money dates look like and how having these helped her to navigate the ups and downs of business income (especially during the pandemic). She shared her breakthroughs of going from feeling like things were sneaking up on her financially to knowing about expenses before they happened. Here are just a few things you'll learn when you listen in: How Brooke felt lost and didn't have any systems in place to handle her business finances. Brooke's revelations about putting money aside for goals like giving back to the church and how this process put things into perspective for her. Why the process of going through her expenses was the hardest step for her. How knowing her numbers has allowed Brooke to take calculated risks within her business like investing in a social media manager. How having a bi-monthly money date with herself has prepared her for the ebbs and flows of business income. How having a spending plan has helped Brooke set clear income goals and pay herself consistently. Brooke's thoughts on how investing in a financial coach have supported her in managing the numbers in her business. Her advice on taking control of every aspect of your business, even if it's scary. If you're a soloprenuer and you want to start creating new possibilities with your finances I promise that you don't want to miss this conversation with Brooke. You'll see exactly why it's important to go beyond just categorizing your numbers. When you take the time to know your numbers as a business owner, you'll get to do more of the things you love as a business owner. This episode will help you see just how easy it can be to go from overwhelmed to intentional about your business finances. Today’s guest has a story that will stir something refreshing in you at a time we know you need it most. Brooke Walsh is a cancer survivor who suffered one of the most aggressive types of brain cancer, glioblastoma. In this episode, she shares her tenacity in following her gut even after many scans and tests indicated nothing was wrong with her. With a husband and two small children to raise, Brooke decided it was not her time. Even if it meant she was bound to a wheel-chair, she was going to witness her kids grow up.    We had the privilege of hearing Brooke speak in person at a conference we attended in Australia earlier this year. Her story impacted us both so much that we knew we had to share her message with our listeners. Even if you have never battled cancer before, you will be inspired by the story of Brooke’s resolution to live her life out loud, as she insisted on healing and rejected the influence of the “odds” being low.    In this episode, we’ll explore:    How Brooke responded to the news of her diagnosis How the practice of gratitude was and continues to be a key element to Brooke’s healing Why it’s critical for you to educate yourself about your own health and wellness, including what you put on and in your body Why hope is useless without action How Brooke continues to walk out her healing   “If you can feel gratitude, then you will probably feel hope too. Pep Talks for Side Hustlers

Play Episode Listen Later May 13, 2020 64:59

Ever dreamed about starting a food blog, but not sure how you could make money from it? My guest today is Brooke Eliason, also known as the blogger behind Female Foodie, a blog that brings readers the best restaurant recommendations across the country (because Brooke believes that life's too short to eat bad food). I was introduced to Brooke by donut blogger Rory Balkin I interviewed back in Episode 264 - and just like Rory, Brooke is monetizing her love of food in some really unique ways - so even if you’re not a food blogger, or a blogger at all this episode is going to blow your mind wide open on all the possibilities out there for you to put different, creative streams of revenue in place in your side hustle. Brooke started her blog back in 2010, and it’s fascinating to get to hear step by step how she started it as a simple passion project and turned it into an entrepreneurial empire with over 60 contributors in 9 cities and counting. Today we’re talking about: How Brooke created a profitable food blog by solving a common problem. How Brooke’s passion project turned into her full time business. The process Brooke used to create and sell a product to her audience. Why bloggers need multiple streams of revenue. Brooke's process for bringing on blog contributors and building her team. Brooke’s side-hustle to self-employed story. How Brooke makes money decisions in her business. The one belief Brooke had to change about herself to get where she is today. So, what’s a blogger who writes restaurant reviews and creates city guides to do during a global pandemic when the majority of the country’s restaurants are shut down? You’ll find out from our episode that Brooke has multiple streams of revenue, and while she probably didn’t anticipate something quite like COVID-19 happening, I think it’s the perfect example of why it’s so important for not just bloggers but any kind of business to have more than one way of making money. I asked Brooke how she pivoted and here’s what she said: “The main pivot has been the restaurant inspired recipes! This was my mom's idea. The response has been incredibly positive and interestingly enough my social media following and engagement have skyrocketed. The entire situation seemed all doom and gloom once I realized that restaurants would be closed for weeks, and even though I'm still missing eating out so much, this challenging time has brought new opportunities and helped me stretch and grow to new capacities! I listened to a Chalene Johnson podcast from Build Your Tribe right when everything started to crumble and she mentioned that we grow the most when times are challenging, not when things are going perfectly, and I agree!” Right now on her Instagram she and her contributors are highlighting the best take-out and make-at-home copycat recipes. Go check out Female Foodie’s Instagram to see how a professional blogger is pivoting with her content during the pandemic - it’s super creative. Because life’s too short to eat bad food, even when you’re staying home. My favorite quotes from Brooke: “It's always important to surround yourself with people who believe in you.” “It's been a lot of trial and error, which I think is the fun and hard part of entrepreneurship.” “You can’t get a no unless you ask.” “When you own something that's yours, you just have complete control.” “I can actually reach those big goals, but not if I think small. I have to believe in it and trust the process and everyday slowly chip away at those goals.” “I've had to learn that I'm still working on this, to not compare, and to stay in my lane.” “Don't let other people take away from what you're building. You are unique and only you can provide the value that you're providing to your community." Female Foodie is now a multi-city website and brand covering the best restaurants in places like Austin, Portland, Chicago, and Los Angeles. She has worked with over 60 contributors in the past four years with a mission to bring her readers the best restaurant recommendations across the country, because life's too short to eat bad food. Today’s show is a special episode with difficult and sensitive topics. We’ll be hearing about Nora and her story of postpartum psychosis and filicide. We have the honor of hearing from Nora’s mother, Kathryn Gahl. She will share from her perspective as a mother and what it’s been like to see what Nora has been through and continues to experience in her imprisonment after filicide. We’ll also hear from Dr. Brooke Laufer, a clinical psychologist who picked up on this case and has followed it closely. Nora has given her permission for us to have this conversation with Brooke and Kathryn about her case. The goal is to get information out in the public about postpartum psychosis, its detection, and treatment. Join us to hear the mother’s perspective, the clinical perspective, and what’s going on in Nora’s life right now. Nora’s mother, Kathryn Gahl, became a widely-published, multi-genre writer after a long career as a nurse manager. She is the mother of a daughter and a son, and in 2004, she lost her young grandson to filicide. Now, her bookshelves sag with letters from her imprisoned daughter, who is also a registered nurse. Kathryn believes in the transformative power of dance, dark chocolate, and red lipstick to help her get through life. Brooke Laufer has been a practicing psychologist since 2005. She began her clinical work in psychiatric wards with severely mentally ill patients and then worked in schools with adolescents and their families. She is currently in private practice doing psychoanalytic psychotherapy. After having her first child, Brooke had a disturbing postpartum OCD experience, which inspired her to begin researching, understanding, and specializing in the area of perinatal mental illness. She recently started working as an expert witness for women who have committed a crime in a postpartum episode. Brooke has two children of her own, along with a Golden Retriever and a loyal husband; they live, work, and play in Evanston, Illinois. Show Highlights: The overview of Nora’s story, from Kathryn Nora’s experience: suffocating her 14-month-old son, Leo, and then attempting suicide because of her postpartum psychosis Circumstances that contributed to Leo’s death Nora’s psychiatric diagnoses: major depressive disorder severe with paranoid ideation, excessive-compulsive personality disorder, and PTSD What these events were like for Kathryn How Kathryn’s writing and dancing have helped her cope with these horrifying events How Kathryn was surprised at the people evaporated from her life and those who stepped up to support and help her How Brooke got involved through corresponding with Nora because of a childhood connection Why Nora believed she deserved to suffer and be punished Altruistic filicide (defined as believing that bringing death to the child is better than if the child survives) is an apt label for Nora What it’s like to be in a state like Wisconsin, where a case like this gets very little support and legal consideration Why Nora made the decision to plead guilty The main issue is how poorly we treat mental health issues in our US legal system that is deeply flawed How other countries deal with mental health, motherhood, and postpartum psychosis How Kathryn dealt with this experience with only one bout of depression Why postpartum psychosis is an issue that shows the failure of our culture A message from Brooke: “We need to understand that motherhood is equally dark and light. We need to ask for good help when we need it.” Why family members need to speak up when a mom seems “off” A message from Kathryn: “Trust your hunch.” The dire need for more postpartum screening Resources: Dr. Brooke Laufer Kathryn Gahl Gahlstone Twitter: @kathryngahl

Brooke is the solo mom of twin boys. She started her journey at the age of 40 and underwent an emotional path to motherhood. Brooke used both a sperm and an egg donor for her pregnancy. She tells me about her hesitation to use an egg donor but how she conquered those fears and pushed forward in her process. Brooke was a highly creative child who spent her 20s and 30s traveling and focusing on her career. However, a glance at a forgotten online dating profile triggered her need to go ahead and begin the single-mother-by-choice journey. Her first experience was not positive and led her to change clinics. She found a wonderful egg donor with her new clinic but the procedure was botched and Brooke had to cope with the disappointment. She explores that disappointment and reflects on how she moved forward. Finally, Brooke had a successful IVF (In vitro fertilization) procedure and conceived her sons. She tells me about telling her family and the decision to move back home to be close to her family. That move home turned out to be for the best because Brooke developed preeclampsia at her 6-month mark and delivered her children at 32 weeks. She credits her family with helping her deal with her illness and the newborns. You can visit Brooke’s blog to learn more about her journey. Some highlights of today’s conversation: Brooke’s early childhood and family ideals. How an EHarmony profile pushed Brooke to become a single-mom-by-choice. How Brooke found her sperm donor and the power of the voice. Brooke’s first IVF and her poor experience at the clinic. The perfect egg donor but the botched retrieval process. Why Brooke choose to go to Portland to conceive her boys. Moving home and premature birth. Brooke’s experience with bonding with her children. How books have helped Brooke open the door to the donor conception talk with her sons. How Brooke found her “tribe” and learned to ask for help. How Brooke juggles family and work. “YOU HAVEN'T LOST CHANCES TO BE A BETTER PERSON.” Are you aware you’re constantly being judged? I bet you are. Are you letting it affect the the way you live your life? I really hope not. Today, it’s so much easier to feel the burden of judgment. With social media, our lives are always in the spotlight. There are so many people who will hate on us, and the more successful we are the more haters there usually are. You can’t listen to them. You just need to follow your heart and brush off their comments. Focus in on listening to those that you really do care about, not some stranger that you’ve never heard of. I have a special guest who knows more about this than most people: Brooke Ence. Brooke is a fitness and Crossfit icon. She also appeared in Wonder Woman as an Amazonian warrior and she's just getting started. Unfortunately, she’s always received a lot of criticism in her life. Her love of working out has meant she doesn’t have a traditional female body. She can come off as intimidating to people, and there’s always been a lot of backlash on social media because of it. Last year she suffered a spinal injury that nearly took her life’s passion away from her. She decided not to let it ruin everything she has built. Through pacing herself she’s learned to get back into the competition world and has been making a massive recovery in such a short amount of time. Sadly, this pacing of herself has lead to even more people criticizing her. They’ve been trying to make her feel like she’s burnt out or past her prime - but I get the feeling she’s going to come back even stronger and better in the future. Instead of listening to the naysayers she’s learned to focus her attention to people that truly know her, support her, and gauge her success on their reaction. On this episode of The School of Greatness, Brooke really opens up about her injury and the struggles she’s gone through as a woman focusing on her passion as opposed to society’s standards. She really is an inspiration to all people -- don't miss Episode 649. Some Questions I Ask: How did you get your injury? (7:48) Did people think you could come back like you did? (23:18) Has your build had an affect your confidence? (29:12) What advice do you give to people that focus on other people’s words all the time? (42:16) How do you push through every time when it hurts? (51:20) Do you feel relief that you don’t have to train as hard for the games? (53:42) In This Episode You Will Learn: How quickly Brooke had her surgery (20:32) The ways Brooke is more secure today (26:26) How Brooke dealt with the lies she was telling herself (37:15) How she sets herself up to have the best workout (48:28) Her vision moving forward (52:03) The thing she’s most proud of since her surgery (1:02:23)

Note: we've now started adding full transcripts to our podcasts. Scroll down to find todays one. Getting Started With Your Own Podcast Today is this podcasts first birthday! That’s right - I launched this thing with those first 31 daily episodes back at the end of June 2015 and while we quickly scaled things back to twice a week, I managed to keep things running for a whole year thanks to the support of my team! I’ve completely fallen in love with podcasting as a medium and thought about making this a show about the lessons I’ve learned podcasting in the last year but given that I did a show like that back in Episode 50, I thought I’d reach out to a podcasting friend of mine - Brooke McAlary from Slow Your Home who started 3 months before me as a podcaster after having blogged successfully for a few years previously. Brooke has fallen so in love with podcasting that she’s fully transitioned Slow Your Home away from being a blog to being a podcast and has gone on to start a podcasting network at JackRabbit.fm. The network has 6 podcast shows in it already with more to come. Her Slow Your Home podcast just went past the one million download mark already so she’s had some real success! This chat covers a lot of ground but largely focuses upon her transition to becoming a podcaster and what practical lessons she learned along the way about podcasting. It’s perfect for anyone wanting to start podcasting and covers: Brooke's journey of going from a blogger to a podcaster Practical tips on how to get a podcast up and running The tools and technical aspects of Brooke’s setup that you should consider Thoughts on how to decide what content format to go with (interview vs talking head vs co hosted) How to push past the fear and other obstacles in your head How to launch with a bang to maximise reach How Brooke is monetising her podcast Why Brooke started a podcast network And there’s much much more! Today, I’m celebrating the first year anniversary of the start of this podcast. It was exactly one year ago, 30th of June 2015 that I kicked things off. I thought about doing a show today on what I've learned since then. I did a similar show back in Episode 50, but instead of doing that I thought what I would do is pick the brains of another podcaster who used to be a blogger, Brooke McAlary from slowyourhome.com and also the founder of the Jack Rabbit Podcast network.  She's an Aussie blogger who lives in Sydney, a mom, a wife, a blogger and that's what we're going to talk about in today's episode. Brooke has brought a wealth of information to today's chat. I interview her over the next hour so you want to grab a cup of your favorite beverage and we’re going to talk about her journey from going from a blogger to a podcaster. She's going to give you some practical tips on how to get a podcast up and running, particularly from the perspective of a blogger. We're going to talk about the technical stuff you need to know, how to decide what content format to go with. We’re going to talk about how to push past some of the obstacles that are in your head, some of the fear associated with podcasting, some of those comparisons that we feel as podcasters and bloggers as well, how to launch your podcast, how to monetize your podcast and why she started a podcast network, and then there's a whole heap of other stuff including a couple of attempts at humor which I’m not sure how that went but as I mentioned during the show, I’m getting tired, it's getting towards the end of a busy time for me and w...
