Dr. Cortney is on a mission to change the world – one woman, one mother, one daughter and one legacy at a time. But her path to popularity, power, and prosperity has required her to navigate numerous potholes. In 1993, six months after graduating from high school, she put dreams of attending college at Texas A&M on hold and instead became a single teenage mom. Watching her friends leave for college, she was instead forced onto Medicaid, food stamps and double-shifts as a pregnant waitress. Despite those immense obstacles, she launched a successful and transcendent business career. Through a combination of passion and persistence, Dr. Cortney earned her Master's degree from Southern Illinois University and founded KidsCare Home Health. In 2005, Dr. Cortney suffered a pulmonary embolism and in 2012 endured a stroke that required 7-hour brain surgery. Despite seemingly insurmountable health odds, she quickly rebounded, earning her doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University. She is currently the CEO and Chairman of the Board for KidsCare, a multi-million dollar enterprise providing speech, physical, occupational, and nursing services to over 2,500 children with special needs from Texas to Colorado. So you’ve decided to quit your job, congratulations! Whether you’re starting your own business or transitioning to a new role somewhere else, there are some guidelines you should follow. In this episode, I’m talking about the ten things I think you should know and do when you’re quitting your job. Whether you love your job or you hate it so much you’d rather do anything but, it’s important for you and your reputation to leave it with grace and dignity. There’d be few things worse than burning bridges that might impact your entire future. These 10 steps will help you leave with your head held high. First, make sure that you actually tell your boss or supervisor that you’re leaving, before you tell anyone else. Workplaces are hotbeds of gossip, so if you start blabbing to your co-workers first, the narrative leaves your hands. Plus, it’s just common courtesy to your supervisor, even if you didn’t see eye to eye. If you have a lot of strong emotions about your job, I always recommend writing a fictional resignation letter - one that doesn’t go beyond your sight. This lets you get out all your feelings of pent out anger or even about how much you loved your job before you approach your supervisor with your real letter. Which you absolutely should do in person, but keep it professional. And in this letter, make sure you’re giving at least two week’s notice - and that you’re working as productively during them. You can be let go for being company dead weight. Finish these week’s out working strong, training your replacement (if possible), writing your job manual, and leave with dignity, knowing you were a model employee for your last two weeks. If you’re transitioning to a new employer or even if you’re going self-employed, don’t bad-mouth your former one. You want to always be able to get a good reference from them. Plus, if you start spouting hate about your old employer, it actually shows a lot more about your character than how they treated you.  Keep all these tips in mind and happy quitting! Writing copy that makes your audience, and your client’s audience, take notice could be the difference between making your bills and, well, not. Laura Belgray joins me to talk about how she built her copywriting business from the ground up, almost accidentally, and what things she wished she’d prioritized when she was starting out. Laura is an award-winning copywriter and the founder of TalkingShrimp.com. She's written TV spots for clients like NBC, Fandango and Bravo; and she helps entrepreneurs find words that make buyers go bananas. Her course with Marie Forleo, The Copy Cure, helps you find your voice and sell anything. Laura was writing professionally for television at a job she loved, occasionally writing some copy on the side after attending an event put on by her friend, Marie Forleo. When she suddenly lost her well-paid job, she had to reexamine how she was going to start making money again. That’s when she decided to take her copywriting hobby full-time, even though she hadn’t really set out to do that. She explains how, for her, her entrepreneurial journey never looked like a rollercoaster… at least not financially or with building her business. Laura’s rollercoaster was purely mental and emotional. One thing that Laura makes sure she asks herself regularly is what she would do if she won the lottery. The formula for a successful company is good leadership coupled with sound financial decisions… Are you ready to turn your business into a thriving successful business? When it comes to a business, having someone in a position of leadership isn’t always an indicator that it’s going to be successful. If that leader does not foster a sense of community, compassion, and responsibility, or they don’t make their employees feel valued, that company probably isn’t going to be successful.  If you’ve been plagued by terrible bosses throughout your employed years, starting your own business might be the way you can be the employer you want to see in the world. You can actually be that role model and example for your employees. Good leadership goes hand in hand with smart financial decisions. On this episode, I’m going through what you need to know to help make these decisions. First, you need to understand your books. Even if you don’t know what everything means, you need to know how much money you have coming in and going out. You also need to make sure that you set up an emergency fund that can be used when you hit a snag in your cash flow, you’re not going to go into debt. Next, you need to know how much of your net revenue you have to set aside for your taxes. Because, and I hate to be that person, taxes are one of the only mandatory things you have to do in your life. If you’re not confident about exactly how much you need to set aside for your taxes, speak to an accountant you trust for financial advice. One of the good things about your taxes is that some of your necessary business expenses are tax-deductible. But which ones? Some of your equipment purchases, office space, maybe even your car - but it all depends on your individual business. Lastly, I’m giving you the low-down on business credit cards. Should you get one? In some cases, it’s the best way to build up your credit score for your business. However, credit cards can be a slippery slope, so tread these waters carefully. Do you feel comfortable when you look at your business ledgers? How long can your emergency fund sustain your business? Have you considered taking out a business credit card? Tenacity, determination, and taking advice from women who have been there before you all contribute to your business and career success. Freelance news anchor and journalist, personal trainer, mentor, and entrepreneur Jenny Anchondo joins me to talk about her personal journey through an eating disorder to working for national television networks. Jenny is the host of Second Shot, a podcast that talks about two news articles a week in a new light. She started her career by driving her highlight reel around the country and meeting with news executives to secure her first role as a writer. But all the while, she was struggling with and through an eating disorder. After ongoing outpatient rehab, Jenny is proud of the steps she’s taken to reclaim her life. She recommends that every single person, whether they’ve gone through addiction or disorder or not, take the time to go deep into their own self-discovery. It’s hard work, but it’s so worthwhile and you will come out of it stronger and with a much better sense of who you are. Jenny is a firm believer in the power of positive mentorship. She found a mentor in a news anchor who advised her that her highlights reel was not going to get her hired, and she recommended Jenny drive around the country so producers could meet her face-to-face and see her personality. Women can have incredibly positive impacts on your life, both personal and business, and everyone should endeavor to have mentors in their lives. As a broadcast journalist, Jenny has experienced her fair share of rejections and “no’s”. Every entrepreneur on this planet has been told “no” at one point or another as well. While the easy thing to do is crumble at the rejection, you need to look for the positive side of that “no” to see it as a new opportunity. Lastly, Jenny explains how she’s naturally a pessimistic person, but she’s learned to reframe her mindset. Now, Jenny looks for the miracle in everyday life. Entrepreneurs are more likely than any other demographic to experience loneliness, depression, and other mental health issues. I’m here today to tell you that if you’ve felt like this, you’re not alone. I’ve also experienced my fair share of depression during my entrepreneurial rollercoaster. We’ve all been there; when we’re working behind a screen all day, we’re not really interacting with anyone. You might have some online connections you chat with here and there, but there’s really nothing like that in-person communication to boost your mood. Inevitably, the lack of social interaction will lead to loneliness. The future of entrepreneurship is changing already to be more open about mental health, depression, and loneliness. Because we are more likely to experience it, it’s time we open the conversation - and we are. And by talking about mental health, we’ll be contributing to making entrepreneurship a less lonely and even more accessible possibility. As entrepreneurs, we need to prioritize self-care every single day. Not when you feel like it, every day. You don’t have to have a long, luxurious bath every day unless you want to, but you need to include some aspects of loving yourself. These are things like getting enough sleep, eating healthy food, and talking to people outside your computer. You should also get a hobby that’s away from your computer. Running, crafting, going to yoga classes, or whatever it is you want to do will all help you disengage and decompress from every day stresses your business brings. I’d also recommend practicing gratitude every day. Whether you say one thing you’re grateful for every step you take to the bathroom or spend five minutes in the morning or night writing in your journal, this simple act helps keep your cortisol levels calm. Lastly, make sure you have a support network. This network preferably lives outside your computer, so you physically have to go to meet up and connect in real life. They might be a local women’s network or just a group of friends you can really unwind with. Do you have a support network? How often do you get outside your house for something that’s not business-related? Do you practice self-care? What do you do when you’ve just started your business and then experience a tragedy in your life? You have two choices: let the tragedy consume your every waking thought or let your business save you. For Katie DePaola, she chose her business over and over again to help her cope with the death of her brother. Katie is the founder of the Inner Glow Circle, a training company for women coaches and entrepreneurs. Katie lost her brother when she was 27 to an overdose, but instead of letting this experience stop her from living her calling, she’s used it to fuel herself forward. She’s used the losses she’s experienced as her greatest opportunities; her business literally saved her life. Katie found first hand what happens when she changed her mindset. When she realized that giving up was not an option for her and the path ahead became clear to her. The hardest things that happen in our lives often have opportunities within them, you just need to look for it. That’s not to say that you’re never going to have another low point when you’re in business, but you need to learn how to navigate your way through them. Every business owner needs to learn the value of a cold pitch - and above that, how and who to deliver your cold pitches to. Once you have this practice down, business opportunities will really start opening up to you. But if there’s one thing so many women in business are hesitant about: it’s the cold pitch. But you just need to get over it. That fear that’s holding you back from making the cold pitch is preventing your business from growing. I’m telling you the secret to how to get that little negative voice in your head to finally shut up. First of all, you have to decide who you want to work with, be they companies or individuals, that you’re actually going to enjoy working with. This is a big part of why we choose a niche. You want to love what you’re doing and who you’re doing it for. You don’t want to be shouting into the wide expanse of the business world. Not everyone is going to want to work with you - and not everyone should work with you. Plus, you can’t physically pitch to every single business out there. So how do you make the perfect cold pitch? Find those companies you’d love to work with, figure out who is the best person there to make the pitch to, and show them how working with you will benefit them. The pitch is not about you! Balancing your new business with your existing relationship shouldn't be hard... but sometimes it is. You need to focus on not only building your business but also maintaining love and respect at home. Anna Osborn joins me to talk about how you nurture your relationship alongside your business, so nothing is neglected. Anna is a family and relationship therapist who loves to talk about running her own business. In Anna’s own words, she knows the delicate balance prioritizing the most important relationship in your life takes when you own your own business. And when you’re feeling happy in your partnership, that spills over into your business, as well. Before we talk about relationships, Anna gives some insight into starting your own business. Many people are terrified of taking that first step, but it’s all about changing your perspective on fear. In fact, it’s the actual act of “doing the thing” that breeds new confidence within you. Bringing a new business into your partnership is almost like bringing a new child in. Your business needs love, attention, and devotion, much the same as a kid would. This is why it’s important to communicate even more with your partner about how they feel about your new business and to resist the urge to keep the details of your business away from them. It comes down to establishing - and sticking to - healthy boundaries. If you say you’re going to do something, do it! Because if you don’t, you’ve broken a bond of trust with your partner.  But what happens when your partner just doesn’t support your new venture at all? Either you need to find some outside business support or start thinking about what takes priority in your life: your partnership or your business. Setting boundaries is important for every aspect of your life, including, and maybe especially, your new business. In fact, it’s so essential for your business, that I’d go as far as to say there are five business non-negotiables to protect your sanity! I’m speaking from personal experience in this episode. Every single one of these non-negotiables has been learned the hard way - from being in the position where I had to! That’s why I’m passing this information to you, so you don’t have to lose your sanity while running your business. First of all, you need to give yourself days off when you start. It’s easy to want to hustle all the time, but it’s actually counter-productive! Schedule your time off every week and stick to it. You’ll hopefully learn that slowing down will actually help your business speed up. You also need to set your business hours and stick to them. Start time, finish time, and everything in between. And communicate this to your clients, so they don’t expect a response to their email at 10 pm on a Monday. Next, you need to set and stick to realistic expectations. This is not only beneficial for you, but for your clients as well. If you’re transparent in how long it takes you to complete your work, and you stick to this, you’ll be much happier in your business. Similarly, you need to set and stick with your rates. I’ve previously talked about how you should set your rates, but it’s so important that you don’t waver. Of course, there are exceptions, but you need to be clear that these are one-off, special occasions and not to be expected or shared with anyone else. Are you ready to transform the way you run your business? When’s the last time you had a day off? Do you have set business hours? I’m here with Racheal Cook to talk about the nitty-gritty of running businesses. After completing her MBA, Racheal went on to work in the corporate world. She was earning good money but had no life outside of her work. When she had 10 panic attacks in 10 weeks, Racheal knew it was time to find an alternative career. Racheal started her own business helping yoga businesses with all those corporate business details that small teams and solo entrepreneurs probably don’t know. One of the first questions she poses to her clients is for them to tell her what their measure of success is. This means how they define if they’ve had a productive week or not. One thing that Racheal’s learned over the last 10 years working for herself is that you need to ask for help. Juggling three kids and growing business has meant learning where you’re expending energy that doesn’t bring you money and outsource it. She also is passionate about the power of your referral network; a good word about you and your business is worth its weight in gold. Working with Racheal requires her clients to monitor their time every single week. Taking the leap and starting your own business is a daunting endeavor no matter what your age. But Jenna Irvin started living her dream in her early twenties when she became obsessed with the idea of barre exercise classes. She’s only been in business for a year, but she’s making leaps in both barre and coaching. Jenna’s interest in barre started after a journey through eating disorders and team sports in high school. She took a chance when she applied to be a barre instructor. She was one of the youngest entrepreneurs to then buy premises and start a barre school in Maryland, moving away from the Pennsylvania home she grew up in.  For her, the entire journey she’s been on has led Jenna to have the career and life she wants right now. Jenna has learned over the year that she needs to rely on her intuition to lead her in some business decisions, especially when those decisions feel wrong. She also refers to a “full-body yes” that helps her make important decisions. Jenna approaches business with vulnerability and authenticity. She believes that in order to be accessible, you need to be real with your audience, so they can learn who you are and accept you where you’re at. And along this vein, Jenna knows where her weaknesses are and seeks to hire someone who can complement and enhance those areas. Jenna refuses to make any decisions that are based on financial gain, as she believes that these are not chosen based on the positive impact you’re going to make in the world. Leaving your 9-5 job can be a stressful experience, especially when you actually really like it! Jade Buford, a graphic designer, and photographer knew she wanted to make the transition to self-employment and felt that with support, she could. If you’re thinking about hiring your first employee, this episode of Women in Business is for you! The most important thing you need to know when you’re getting ready for your first hire is that you shouldn’t hire someone just because you’re busy. You don’t want to hire someone who ends up watching you be busy all day. So what do you need to do before you hire someone? First, you need to figure out exactly what tasks you do every day. Write down everything you do in a day, a week, a month, and mark what tasks you can outsource to someone. This is the start of your job description. But before you even think about advertising for an employee, you need to standardize how you work. You can’t expect someone to come into your business and work the way you want them to if you haven’t taken the time to write it out! So write down step-by-step how you work your way through each task. Guess what? You’ve just started your first procedures manual! As you write down every task, your manual will get fuller and more complete for your business. If you ask any business owner what one of the hardest parts of starting was, you’re going to get the same answer: determining what they’ll charge. When you’re a service-based business, rather than a product-based one, there are so many different elements you need to keep in mind when figuring out your bottom line. Of course, once you figure out your bottom line, you need still need to make a profit! In this episode, I want to explain what the difference between a service-based and product-based business is. Most of the women that I work with offer a service, which is amazing, and offers so much flexibility in pricing.  There are five different ways you can price your services: by the hour, by the project, experience-based, competitor-based, and value-based. And however you choose to price your services is up to you, but there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First things first, you need to determine what the baseline you need to bring in each month is. To do this, you need to calculate how much you’re paying out each month to run your business. You also need to consider how many hours you want to work each week. Then I’m taking you through the calculations you need to do so that you’re including all the other outlying costs for your business: tax, subcontracting, wages, and more. I’m also explaining why you need to know your initial business costs will be so that you can factor these into your overall hourly rate. When you’re determining your fixed project rate, you need to know all of these figures as well. But there are some benefits to charging a project rate over hourly. Maybe most notably that you can charge your rate while getting quicker at the work you’re doing. Have you thought about how you want to price your service-based business? Do you know your overhead costs? How much do your competitors charge? Our guest, Jessica Terzakis of Terzakis and Associates, works with brands and small businesses to help them create group courses that complement their 1:1 coaching. The entrepreneurial spirit is multi-faceted with lots of different components - some innate, some learned. But topping it all is mindset because when you approach business with the right frame of mind, anything can happen. However, not everyone has what it takes to start their own business.  There are five major components to the entrepreneurial spirit. We’ve established it all comes down to mindset, but what kind of qualities do you need to have? First, it’s about confidence. Knowing you are good at what you do and being able to support your claims is so important. Potential clients respond positively to confidence. You’ll also need to be persistent. Persistent to contact potential clients, to try new avenues, to keep going. Did you know that human beings have an average attention span of seven seconds and usually need to be connected with at least seven times before you make a sale? Next, you’ll need to be resilient. I won’t lie to you - starting your own business is not an easy process. Somethings won’t work out; you’ll be rejected, you might even get a bad review. Are you just going to curl up and quit? No! That’s where your resilience comes into play. Like resilience, you need drive and determination to succeed when you’re starting your own business. If you’re not waking up and getting to work with excitement, you’re probably lacking some vital connection to what you’re doing. But don’t worry if your feelings towards your business change over time - that’s totally normal. Why do you want to start your own business? Can you meet deadlines when you don’t have a manager over your shoulder? You might start it as a side hustle, or you might go all in, but whatever way you do it, there are some things you need to know. It’s HARD working a full-time day job while building your side hustle empire on the side - harder still if you’ve got family and other personal commitments to keep up with, too. So many women find themselves completely stressed out when their side hustle starts taking off. They’re making money, but losing time. They literally feel like they can’t catch a breath. I always advise that you take advantage of the time that you’re still getting a regular paycheck. Do things like learning new skills or up-leveling your existing ones, getting your business entities set up and legal, and start setting aside money in your savings account. In fact, getting substantial buffer funds built up might be the most important thing you can do when you’re starting your own business. Lastly, I’m talking you through both the right and the wrong ways to quit your job. What to do if you absolutely hate it and can’t face another day. Anyone can start a business, but it takes planning, preparation, and dedication to succeed in it. That’s where your business plan comes in. A business plan is a vital, living document that will give you the structure of your business. Today on Women in Business, I’m explaining what the role of a business plan is. Why you should have one and what elements you should include in it. But rest assured, business plans are adaptable, to an extent. They serve as a living guide to where your business is going. Especially when you’re going to approach potential investors or mentors, having a business plan lets them see that you’re serious and mean business. A business plan gives these mentors an important look into your vision for the future. And with your mission statement, they, and you will have something to consistently strive towards. Your business plan will also focus on who your target audience is. It’s easy to want your target audience to be everyone, however, you’ll find that when you narrow your audience down and pinpoint exactly what type of businesses or people is your ideal, you’ll get more business. Putting your base rate of pay in your business plan is also a good practice. Not only will this figure keep you right in terms of what to charge your first customers, but it will also help you with future financial projections. You should also examine what your competitors are doing and include this analysis in your business plan. This lets you see what they’ve been doing well and what’s getting results, and what’s not. You can include these insights into your marketing plan. Lastly, you’ll want to think about what your long-term role in the business will be. Will you be the sole employee for the foreseeable future? Building a successful multi-million dollar business takes a lot of self-discovery and determination. Today’s guest, Brooke Castillo, started her career as a life coach 14 years ago and has since built a mega-successful and well-known school where she trains life coaches. But getting to this point hasn’t been without its challenges. When Brooke was a child, she wanted to be a teacher because she loved the thought of helping shape young people’s lives. As she grew older, going through some traumatic life experiences, and reading the inspiring Women Who Love Too Much, she decided to study psychology. Her psychology degree led her to a career, which in turn led her to discover life coaching, way before it was a popular subject. Brooke knew she found her true path when it felt like everything was falling into place. She was able to stay home to look after her growing children while still building her small empire as a life coach. So often, we’re spending too much time working and not enough playing: there has to be a better way. That’s why developing your time management skills is so important for entrepreneurs. First of all, preparing and planning are extremely vital! How many times a day are you checking your phone? And then inevitably getting lost on social media? Following through on your dreams can be difficult, especially if you haven’t made any kind of plan to turn them into a goal. On this episode of Women in Business, I’m sharing my best tips for setting your goals out with an achievable action plan so you can turn them into reality. First, we need to establish the difference between a dream and a goal - and also their correlation to each other. When you’re turning your dreams into goals, you need to be extremely clear about how you’re going to reach them. That’s why you need a plan. I’ll show you how to work backward from the goal outcome to create measurable steps that will get you started on the way to your dream reality.  When your goal is business oriented, you need to know what type of services you want to provide. The clearer you can picture this, the likelier it’ll be to happen. Setting specific, clear, and descriptive intentions will also help you visualize what the path is to take you to your goal. There are a few business-related questions you need to determine when creating your measurable goals, starting with how much the least amount of money you can earn is. When you can determine what your baseline income is, you can figure out how much to charge and how many clients you need to provide services for. Do you know where to find your first clients? Or how to get your first testimonials and reviews in a completely legitimate way? And do you know where you should even start marketing your new business? Today’s guest, Lisa Roth, founder of Rockabye Baby!, shares her journey from nutrition coaching to Vice President of a record label and owning her own production company. Lisa has used her childhood experiences and the soft skills she learned growing up to fuel her career. Always one to promote herself with confidence, she’s secured employment and clients even when she’s not fully qualified. This quality has given her the knowledge that nothing is out of her grasp. From landing her first nutrition client before she’d finished her qualification to deciding she wanted to work for National Geographic producing documentaries, Lisa doesn’t let anything hold her back. She attributes her ability to adapt to each situation and connect with people to the soft skills she learned growing up. Lisa is now the Creative Director and Vice President of CMH Records where she works with the President to keep their label relevant in an age where people are paying less and less for music. She has learned to diversify the business and has launched her own label, Rockabye Baby!, which reimagines classic rock jams as lullabies. The difference between a woman who thinks she wants to start her own business and the woman who has comes down to one essential thing: Mindset. Opening up for yourself takes courage, determination, dedication, and an attitude that you can absolutely do it, even if it’s hard. On today’s episode of Women in Business, I’m sharing my own story about how I shifted my mindset to start KidsCare Home Health. When I was newly qualified as a therapist, I worked for a local company that held me down. There were no secrets that all the employees were easily replaceable and morale was low throughout. I made the decision that I could either job hop and be treated like this no matter where I worked, or I could forge out on my own. While I decided that I wanted to start my own business, I didn’t immediately take the leap. Through one reason and then another, including a pregnancy and a new home, having a stable income was what I “should” do. So I stayed. But then something happened that shifted my entire mindset on starting my own business. And yes, that shift can happen as quickly to you as it did to me! You shouldn’t give up on your dreams, and if becoming an entrepreneur is one of them, then stay the course. Where do you keep your box of dreams? How long has it been since you’ve looked in it? I challenge you to find a picture of yourself as a child and tell her you’re going to pursue her dreams. You can do this! Dr. Cortney Baker is on a mission to change the world – one woman, one mother, one daughter and one legacy at a time. But her path to popularity, power, and prosperity has required her to navigate numerous potholes. In 1993, six months after graduating from high school, she put dreams of attending college at Texas A&M on hold and instead became a single teenage mom. Watching her friends leave for college, she was instead forced onto Medicaid, food stamps and double-shifts as a pregnant waitress. Despite those immense obstacles, she launched a successful and transcendent business career. Through a combination of passion and persistence, Dr. Cortney earned her Master’s degree from Southern Illinois University and founded KidsCare Home Health. In 2005, Dr. Cortney suffered a pulmonary embolism and in 2012 endured a stroke that required a 7-hour brain surgery. Despite seemingly insurmountable health odds, she quickly rebounded, earning her doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University. She is currently the CEO and Chairman of the Board for KidsCare, a multi-million dollar enterprise providing speech, physical, occupational, and nursing services to over 2,500 children with special needs from Texas to Colorado. She has also authored Unlimited: Conquering the Myth of the Glass Ceiling and the best-selling book, The 10 Dos and Don’ts for Business Leadership: Lessons to Lead Effectively.
