Bet you didn't know that nurturing the next generation of opera performers, technicians, and enthusiasts begins in classrooms. Join Key Change co-hosts Anna Garcia and Olga Perez Flora on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Santa Fe Opera Department of Community Engagement and Education, featuring guest appearances by Season 5 favorites Charles Gamble, Director of Community Engagement, and Marissa Aurora, Community Engagement Liaison, plus new friend Olivia Dorrell, Administrative Coordinator.  “We're all moved by the extraordinary pageantry, music, and movement of opera,” says Charles. “I'll be honest with you, though; the thing that most excites me is the process of being able to engage in that process with young humans and watching them do the heavy lifting of being artists.”  Santa Fe Opera's myriad school programs and summer camps introduce children as young as three to the collaborative spirit of opera, while professional development workshops help teachers use opera to facilitate learning. Internships provide an essential point of entry for college-aged talent. “It's been really rewarding to see and hear from the students how it's opening their world to a lot of career paths that they didn't think were possible in New Mexico,” says Marissa. Other initiatives like volunteer opportunities, the Pueblo Opera Cultura Council, and the Pueblo Opera Program ensure that Santa Fe continues to be a welcoming environment for all. Oliva agrees. “It's always lovely to welcome so many patrons to the preview dinners, some seasoned opera-goers and some attending the opera for the first time.” FEATURED IN THIS EPISODE Charles Gamble, Director Of Community Engagement  Marissa Aurora, Community Engagement Liaison Olivia Dorrell, Administrative Coordinator MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Opera Storytellers Summer Camp | Santa Fe Opera Pueblo Opera Program | Santa Fe Opera Pueblo Opera Cultural Council | Santa Fe Opera ALTO: Arts Integration | Santa Fe Opera Guilds Of Santa Fe Opera, Inc Opera Theatre | University Of New Mexico Albuquerque Academy Northern New Mexico College The Kennedy Center For The Performing Arts Lucio Silla 2005 | Santa Fe Opera Der Rosenkavalier | Santa Fe Opera The Turn of the Screw | Santa Fe Opera Die Walküre | Santa Fe Opera La bohème | Santa Fe Opera KEY CHANGE RECOMMENDED PLAYLIST An Opportunity to Encounter Excellence (and Big News!) Your job as a parent is to advocate for your child, particularly when there is a mental health concern because we want our children to know that, if they're going through something emotionally, it impacts the whole family. Therapy or treatment is not ‘fix my kid', it's ‘help my family'. Once a child realizes this, they'll find it easier to see their value in the family and that is immensely helpful! Joining us in conversation today is Denise Cipolla, Administrative Coordinator of Guidance and Counseling for Conroe ISD. She shares with us why mental health is such a focus for Conroe ISD and how mental health support is also a support mechanism for learning. Today, you'll hear about the social-emotional learning playbook created by teachers, administrators, and counselors, and learn what trauma-informed teaching and care looks like. Denise reveals what she has witnessed happening when mental health is left unattended to, explores why some parents are emotional hostages of their children, and explains why stress and anxiety is the highest presenting problem in students of all ages, as well as where that stems from. Join us today to learn from Denise's wealth of wisdom for parents looking to guide their children through managing their mental health. Thanks for tuning in! Key Points From This Episode:A parent's role to advocate for their child, especially if there is a mental health concern. Three places people go when they are concerned about their child's mental health: the church, the school, and the family physician.Today's guest, Administrative Coordinator of Guidance and Counseling, Denise Cipolla. An introduction to Denise and her family, travels, and career leading up to this role. Why mental health is a focus for Conroe ISD as a support mechanism for learning. The social emotional learning playbook created by teachers, administrators, and counselors.Trauma informed teaching and trauma informed care.Trends in mental health, and how problems are pushing down younger and younger.Stress and anxiety, the highest presenting problem in students of all ages. How people tend to be more kind face-to-face than via social media. Where stress and anxiety stems from: pressure to be the very best and never to fail. The lasting impact of mental health issues that are left unattended to. How some parents are emotional hostages of their children. The message you send your children when you do everything for them. What Conroe ISD does to share resources within the county, including working with Mosaics. The ideal point of contact at the school if you are concerned about your child: the school counselor or a teacher if you are not yet comfortable with the counselor. How to navigate children leaving for mental health appointments. TChat, the telemental health that is delivered through Baylor School of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital.Choosing to withdraw a child to allow them to focus on their mental health. Why it is helpful for a child to know that seeking help is not ‘fix my kid' but ‘help my family'.Unique circumstances under which accommodations can be made related to mental health. The power of a growth mindset rather than a fixed one.Why it is so important to ‘listen to hear' rather than ‘listen to respond'. Denise's story of hope: allow people to help you, because in doing so you are helping them.Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Mosaics of MercyDenise Cipolla on LinkedInConroe ISD

I'm so excited to bring you the work of Jake Edwards who took what he saw on the battlefield and is now using that to help organizations combat an active shooter threat. He is the founder of Lead Tactics, a company that assists organizations in active threat response. Jake started his professional career in 2003 as a Combat Engineer in the United States Marine Corps. He served in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and more specifically Operation Phantom Fury (Second Battle of Fallujah) in 2004 with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines. He served with the 3rd Battalion, and 4th Marines in 2005 during Iraq's first free election. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant from the Marine Corps Reserves in 2009.In 2010, Jake was hired as a Contingency Skills Instructor to help support requirements for military troops deploying to hostile/austere environments. In 2012, he transitioned to another training command and within one year rose to the ranks of Assistant Chief Instructor (filling an O-3 billet). There his training supported military advisors deploying to over 140 countries. The main course he supported was a rigorous six-week course that helped military advisors prepare for the challenges of language, region, culture, and field-craft skills needed to thrive in uncertain and hostile environments with limited support. Also, he was the lead instructor for active shooter/insider threat training for armed and unarmed deploying students. This was a vital position due to the green-on-blue threat with our host nation allies.Since 2016, Jake has been employed by one of the largest public-school divisions on the east coast (US).  Originally, he filled the position of School Security Training Specialist. In 2019 he was promoted to the Administrative Coordinator of Crisis Readiness. He is a certified School Security Officer Trainer and is also the district instructor that conducts staff crisis management training, along with leadership development training for 100 schools and 13,000+ staff.Jake planned and coordinated the 15-year, Second Battle of Fallujah reunion at the National Marine Corps Museum in 2019. He was able to fundraise over $60,000 with a large golf tournament, that allowed over 300 guests to attend the reunion at no charge. During his efforts he collaborated with four non-profits, Azalea Charites, Semper Fi/America's Fund, Reunite The Fight, and The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. To learn more about Jake and his work - https://threatresponsetraining.com/

They have worked or volunteered for numerous nonprofits related to social justice, alternative media, theatre, film, and writing. Poet/writer/visual artist under the name Nancy O. Graham; actor under the name Noa Graham. Her most recent theatre project was Orchid Receipt Service, starring Asia Kate Dillon, at Theater MITU580 in Brooklyn, pre-pandemic. Most recent film project is a short called Elegy for a Glacier, about an environmental activist and her glaciologist daughter forced to face off about the construction of a ski resort in the Rockies.Louisa Finn is a  Hudson Valley native, whose mother was a member of the Quaker Smiley family of Mohonk Mountain House, and father a Russian Jewish pianist from the Bronx.  She has spent her life thus far actively engaged in learning what it is to be human and to be herself.  She works as a Speech/Language Pathologist and Reading Tutor, and clinical instructor at SUNY New Paltz.  She is on the Board of Mohonk Consultations, where she serves as Administrative Coordinator, and Sky Lake Shambhala Center Buddhist Retreat.  She writes poetry, and is creating a forest garden in her front yard.Today we're talking about Love and a myriad of related and thought provoking subjects. Nancy and Louisa share about their first memories of love and how they relate to the word which takes us into the realm of spiritual materialism, caring for others, and being a mother.  The show is inspired by bell hooks and her writings on love and self love/self worth so we dive into self-love as Louisa and Nancy share their own process to love themselves better as well as how self-love relates to caring for others and being a woman. We then leave the personal towards the end of the show to talk about the public and how the work of Mohonk Consultations is cultivating love in its own way, bringing folks together to collaborate, lifting voices, and caring for land and others. We leave you with a call for your own definition or thoughts on Love.  bell hooks herself seemed to have a few, "love is the action we take on behalf of our own or another's spiritual growth..." "love is a combination of trust, commitment, care, respect, knowledge and responsibility..." Aloha, my name is Patricia Wistinghausen and over the past decade I have been working mostly as an Administrative Professional, and then volunteering my time as a Community Organizer and Advocate for various social justice issue areas. Through my years of public service, civic engagement, and community stewardship, I’ve been fortunate to be a founding member, board member, and leader within locally-based organizations on the island of Kaua’i, across the state, and representing Hawai’i at a national level.    Below is a list of some of the groups that I’ve been involved with, or am still actively volunteering with: Chair (2018) and Vice-Chair (2019) of the Committee on the Status of Women (CSW) with the County of Kaua’i Boards and Commissions Vice-Chair (2018-2020) and Founding Member of the statewide Veterans Caucus with the Democratic Party of Hawai’i Board of Directors for the statewide organization, Emergency Management Professionals of Hawai’i (EMP-HI) – Founding Member, Elected to the 1st Board of Directors as Charter Secretary – Executive Officer, 1st Woman on the Board, served as President-Elect (2018), President (2019), and Immediate Past President (2020). Ho’okele Coalition of Kaua’i – Prevention Committee Member – County of Kaua’i Kaua’i Community Action Team Member – Sexual Assault Violence Prevention Kaua’i State Central Committee Representative – Democratic Party of Hawai’i (2016-2020) Past Leader in Kaua’i Women’s Caucus and Kaua’i Young Democrats Founding Member and Past Coordinator of the Kaua’i Violence Prevention Coalition (KVPC) Past Board Member of the Kaua’i Rural Health Association (KRHA) Am also an advocate in groups fighting for a Living Wage, for Prison Reform, for LGBTQ+ rights, for increasing access to Veterans’ Services (especially for disabled veterans), access to Healthcare as a Human Right, along with Racial, Economic, and Environmental Justice.   For the past 7 years, I have also been most actively involved in the Prevent Suicide Kaua’i Task Force (PSKTF). I’m a Steering Committee Member, Suicide Prevention Educator, and safeTALK Trainer for our island; going on 4 years now. Out of the different community issues that I’ve dedicated my time to, in addition to being passionate about Women’s Advocacy and Gender Equity Rights, I dedicate the most time to my work in Suicide Prevention.   As is the case with nearly every person that has ever been in one of my Suicide Prevention Trainings, I am connected in the form of family members and friends who died by suicide, who are attempt survivors, who have had or are having thoughts of suicide, and because I’ve had personal struggles of my own. When you lose a loved one, a classmate, an acquaintance, or even a celebrity you admired to suicide, no matter how distant the relation may have been, the pain is still felt in your heart and throughout your community with each life lost.  My goal in having started this Consulting company in the midst of this coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, was to focus my efforts on reaching out to my community via suicide prevention education. By sharing information and delivering trainings, I aim to continue empowering individuals to recognize signs that someone may be thinking about suicide and to have the tools to engage that person and start having those difficult conversations. When it comes to suicide prevention, we know that the more we talk about suicide the less likely someone will be to take their own life. By bringing it up first, and asking the question ‘Are you thinking about suicide?’ we create a safe space and give the person struggling permission to speak about their thoughts with someone who is willing to listen without judgement and is there to support them as they recognize for themselves their reasons for wanting to die, and more importantly, talking through their reasons for wanting to KeepSafe and live.  All of the issues I have worked on and continue to work on are tied together in the shared experience of humanity. It all comes back to equity and prioritizing our mental health and well-being (#SelfCare) along with that of others. I am still learning this, but through teaching and talking with others I hope to continue understanding and finding that balance. When we talk about difficult things and allow ourselves to lean into that discomfort and be vulnerable – as Dr. Brene Brown says – we can then lean on each other for the strength we need to keep going; or we can better recognize when we need to be still, recognize and listen to how we are really feeling (happy, sad, angry, joyous) and in the moments that we feel them. In those ways we’ll be able to honor our mental health by not putting on a brave face or wearing a figurative mask, but we can work towards destigmatizing the act of being ourselves.    We’re all a work in progress, as is this website, but for now here’s also some information on my Professional Work Experience for your reference: In addition to volunteering with these groups and others, Patricia has over a decade of experience in the Administrative Professional field having served in the roles of Office Manager, Receptionist, Program Assistant, Administrative Assistant, Administrative Coordinator, and Sales Manager while working with for-profit companies, non-profit organizations, and in local and state government. She was also the founding departmental head and served as the Campus Public Safety Manager (Security Director, Safety Officer, Emergency Manager) for Kaua’i Community College, and the Transit Security Grant Planner and TheBus Safety Outreach Coordinator and Educator for the City & County of Honolulu; delivering anti-terrorism, transit-related outreach education, particularly to limited English proficiency populations. Patricia specializes in: – Prevention Education and Outreach; especially on Suicide Prevention – Public Speaking on the topics of Mental Health and Suicide, and Gender Equity as a Woman of Color – Administrative Assistant Services – both Virtual and In-Person on the island of Kaua’i  – Social Media Marketing, Website, and Content Creation Patricia is a graduate of the University of Hawai`i – West O`ahu where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration (Government Management) with Concentrations in Disaster Preparedness Emergency Management and Justice Administration. Patricia is from Kaua’i, grew up in Wailua, and now resides in Kapa’a with her husband Justin. Feel free to reach out to me! I’m a friendly person and would love to collaborate with you on helping our communities. Mahalo for taking the time to read this and looking forward to talking with you soon! With Love & Aloha,    Patricia  patricia@patriciawistinghausen.com

She always had an interest in international relations and was always looking for where she could make an impact to change the world. She loved and enjoyed what she was doing, but it came to a point where she hated her life. She found that she did not like what life looked like when she was doing the things that she wanted. She loved the topics and the content but what she actually wanted was to travel, be location-independent, have all the free time and make a lot more money. Now Kim is currently a consultant for a network marketing company, promoting health and wellness, along with the mission to not just create healthy strategies for individuals but also help people develop their business in the wellness industry. Olivia Orvis-Bowers is currently an Administrative Coordinator with the City of Brampton having just finished working with the City of Mississauga in various administrative roles for the past 7 years. Olivia has excelled in finding her next level of success and at the age of 23, she has earned positions that would have normally taken much longer to achieve. Born and raised in Mississauga, Olivia started working for government at the age of 16, which fostered her love to serve communities, and shaped the foundation for her career in the public service. When Olivia was accepted into four post secondary programs, she was unable to decide which one she wanted to pursue and by the time she made a decision the only offer than didn’t expire was in accounting. She would later switch her focus to Management Studies where she has recently graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Humber College. She is now looking to pursue her Masters in the next two years. Among many other skills and experiences, Olivia studied abroad for a semester in Scotland, was a free lance editor for UpWork, volunteers with the SPCA and House Cat Rescue, is a well versed communicator, and most importantly an avid dad joke enthusiast. On this episode we talk about how Olivia strives to avoid complacency by seeking out the next level of success, why she decided to leave one municipal giant for another, how she worked one shift at Tommy Hilfiger then left, and we also simulate the popular channel “All Def” by diving into some pretty cringe worthy dad jokes.
