I love your podcast and am in a pickle, I hope you can help. It’s my best friends Birthday, and she is turning 25 today! The past year has been terrible for her. She lost her dad to Covid and moved from coast to coast to be with her family. She (and I) have been feeling quite down and hopeless about love and feel that it is just not going to happen for us. I am trying to be as optimistic as possible but coming up short. She has taken strides towards making a better career for herself (in AAPI Mental health) going to grad school soon. Could you please recommend a book, fiction or non fiction, to lift up her spirits and help with the inevitable quarter life crisis? Something with preferably a happy/hopeful ending and not a lot of trauma. Look forward to your recommendation, Love, A lost Friend 2. I have a friend who I know likes reading and has a birthday coming up in April and I would love to get her a book she will enjoy.  She likes social justice issues, and recently enjoyed reading the Hate U Give. I would like another book similar that explores issues in an interesting way, we are in our early twenties so does not have to be YA. She does also enjoy fantasy so it also could be set in a different world. LGBTQI+ themes are very welcome.  Thanks, -Monica 3. Sorry for the last minute but …I recently grabbed Lawbreaking ladies by Erika Own and was wanting more anthologies about females. I love regency era and was wondering if there were any books like this about female rulers or female celebrities. Preferably nonfiction but I guess any female led anthologies would do. I have A Universe of Wishes that came out last December.  -Rianna 4. Hi! I am looking for books as either how to guides or inspiration on living a life that is less consumer focused. I’m interested in environmental sustainability as well as economic sustainability. I’m trying to retrain my brain from turning want into need and from thinking I need to spend money on all the things in order to be happy, but ignoring/avoiding all the marketing designed to make me think those things is hard to do. I’m currently reading “Braiding Sweetgrass” which is inspiring me to do more and be better, not just for my wallet and personal well-being, but for the planet as well. Any resources would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! -Bre 5. Hi there, I’m a 23-year old who has dealt with mental illness for the best part of a decade. In the last few months my depression has become a lot worse. I am still able to read and find it a good escapism from my mind particularly the fantasy genre which I delved into for the first time. However, I’d like to read some more books to help me understand or feel less alone with my condition. I’m open to all genres – fiction, memoir, etc. – though I’d prefer something not too academic/scientific. Also could you avoid Matt Haig (no hate but his books aren’t really for me). Thank you x -Kate 6. Hi, I’ve been listening to a lot of songs from The Beach Boys, they make me think of a relaxing island or beach town. Also, summer is coming!  I know it sounds weird but can you recommend me books that feel like a Beach Boys song. Bonus points if there’s surf involved.  Love from Barcelona, Spain!  -Meri 7. I am looking for adult fantasy romance/epic book recommendations. I became hooked with Sara J. Maas books, and I especially loved the COTAR series. I love the world building, strong female characters and hot heros. I am looking for something epic that’s not YA, with adventure, suspense and definitely a steamy romance, but with good writing! Brave Girl, Quiet Girl by Catherine Ryan Hyde

I started whispering in her ear, but so quiet I wasn’t sure she could even hear me. It was more like making the words with my lips against her ear, but then just this tiny breath of air that was the sound.I said, “Brave girl, quiet girl.”She said it back to me, just as quiet, which really surprised me. She stopped her run-up to that big cry and whispered back to me, “Brave girl, kiet girl,” right in my ear. She didn’t really get the kw sound in quiet—I think she was too young to have gotten the hang of that sound--but anyway I knew what she meant so what difference did it make?Catherine Ryan Hyde’s 2020 novel, Brave Girl, Quiet Girl, begins with a violent car-jacking. Brooke, a divorced single mom is driving her mother’s  expensive Mercedes with her two year old daughter, Etta, strapped into her car-seat in the back, but she is dragged from the car by the thief, and watches helplessly as the car drives off with her daughter still strapped in.This occurs in the first few pages of this frightening and yet lovely book about Brooke, Etta, and Molly, a sixteen-year-old homeless girl.  Molly is with her also homeless male friend late at night when she spots Etta, still strapped in her car-seat on the sidewalk. With no phone, no money, and no idea how Etta got there, Molly is faced with the daunting challenge of returning the little girl to her family.I have sometimes put aside one of Hyde’s many novels because it seems just too sentimental, too sweet, too full of pathos. And this novel is certainly high on the pathos scale, and yet it captured me early on, gripped me, and I just could not stop reading it until I was finished.Molly is homeless and on the streets because she has been tossed out of her home in St. George Utah and told not to return unless, and until, she has shed the devil that she has brought into her family home. Molly, under pressure from her girlfriend, had decided to come out to her mother, and that is what her mother labels bringing the devil into the home.I won’t divulge much of the story here, but I will tell you that the reader is kept on tenterhooks during the early phases as Molly tries to care for little Etta and to hide her away from other street youths who intend to grab her from Molly and hold her for ransom. Molly had helped raise her two younger sisters, and so is a competent and loving caretaker, but with no funds for food or diapers for the toddler. After several very frightening events, Molly is finally able to race after a police car with Etta holding on for dear life, and thus begins the reuniting of Etta with her mother Brooke. Initially, Brooke is angry with the young girl, not understanding why she did not alert the police earlier or find a way to call Etta’s mother in spite of the fact that there is an amber alert out for her. The rest of the novel is devoted to the interactions of mother and daughter and the intervention of a sympathetic female police officer who firmly but gently leads Brooke into a better understanding of Molly’s heroic actions in saving Etta. Although Brooke, herself, has a very troubled relationship with her own mother, she assumes that Molly must have done something horrible or unlawful to have provoked her mother in to forcing her from the home. She decides to drive from California to St. George to confront Molly’s mother, and to, hopefully, get Molly back into her family home. When Brooke finally confronts Molly’s mother and learns of her super-fundamentalist religious beliefs that treat homosexuality as a dreadful sin and a chosen life-style that can be discarded like a filthy cloak, she begins to reassess Molly and to try to care for her in something like the loving ways Molly has cared for Etta. While the plot is what drives this novel, it turns out to reveal a deep understanding of street-kids, and the many different reasons that people find themselves homeless and living on the streets. I find myself very impressed by both Hyde’s excellent story-telling and her desire to talk about social issues and the meaning of love.Baby Etta loves Molly from the start, and calls out Molly, Molly, Molly whenever she sees her. While it takes much longer for Brooke to begin to see the sterling qualities of Molly, the relationship that develops between the two women is heartening I suppose there will be some readers who find this book to be corny and much too sentimental, I thought it to be a beautiful story about love, and redemption.

022: Pay it Forward with Our Stories

You Were Made for This

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 10, 2019 10:56

Relationships are often built upon what we learn from others who share their stories with us. We grow when their story becomes part of our story, so we then have something to pay it forward to others. Listen in to learn how. I’ve been thinking more about last week’s episode #21 “The Most Important Relationship of All.” It was about a story told to me when I was 19 that set me on the path I’ve been following ever since. I can’t imagine how my life would have turned out if it were not for that story. What my friend Carol told me on April 4, 1968 was part of her story, which came from the man she calls “Pops” and his wife - and their story. I’m the beneficiary of hearing this same relationship story people have been passing along to others for the last 2,000 years. When the stories of others have so impacted a person’s life, like they did for me, what are we to do with that? Do we just sit on this blessing, or do we pay it forward? We pay it forward would be my answer. But the answer raises 3 questions. Why do we pay it forward? How do we pay it forward? and When do we pay it forward? Listen in to the rest of the show for the answers to these three questions: Why? How? and When? I have always found the term “pay it forward” a bit odd. It doesn’t roll off the tongue easily and just seems an awkward phrase to me. So I did a little bit of research and found that “Pay it Forward” is defined as “When a recipient of an act of kindness does something kind for someone else, rather than just accepting or repaying the original good deed.” Well moving on, the term was most likely coined in 1916 by author Lily Hardy Hammond in her novel In the Garden of Delight, where she wrote: “You don’t pay love back; you pay it forward.” Science Fiction author Robert Heinlein is credited with popularizing the term in his 1951 book Between Planets. The term “Pay it Forward” became more popular in 2000 with a movie by the same name staring Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt, based on a 1999 novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde. Hyde later established the Pay It Forward foundation, which in 2007 inspired National Pay It Forward Day on April 28th. Now that would be the day to be on Oprah’s TV show for sure. All this is probably more background information than you care to know. So let’s move on to Why do we pay it forward with our story? How do we do it? When do we do it? Why do we pay it forward with our story? We share the stories that have profoundly impacted our lives because we want other people to experience the benefits we’ve experienced from these stories, because we care about people. We want the best for them. We don’t lose anything by sharing with others what we’ve gained from others sharing their story with us. It’s not a zero-sum game. If we don’t care enough to want this for other people, then we don’t fully understand the story shared with us. If we don’t care, then we need to go back hear the story again so we fully understand its implications. We pay it forward because we care. We pay it forward because it’s just the right thing to do. How do we pay it forward? It starts with being true to the story ourself, whatever that impactful story may be. By living out the story with honesty and integrity. We don’t have to live it out perfectly, but we must live it with intentionality. We pay it forward by experiencing growth within us that’s nurtured by the stories others share with us. We pay it forward by telling AND by showing. I’ll share an example in a little bit. When do we pay it forward? Short answer: When the time is right. The time is never right when it’s all about feeding our ego. The time is never right when we’re looking to get something in return, when our goal is to be paid back. The time is right when God makes it clear to us. When we feel him nudging us. When we sense the person we’re paying it forward to might be receptive to our story becoming part of their story. Here’s a brief story that hopefully will illustrate all this. It comes from my book THEM I’ve mentioned to you before. It’s just a few paragraphs I’ll read. [THEM; bottom of page 83 to the bottom of page 84] Before I close, here’s the he main take-away from today’s episode, our show in a sentence When we’ve been blessed by people sharing their life-life-changing stories with us, we’ll find great fulfillment when we pay it forward by sharing our own life-changing stories with others. Here’s a way you can respond to today’s show What story has greatly impacted your life that you could pay it forward? Who comes to mind that you think would be receptive to your story? If no one comes to mind, ask God to help you be on the look out for someone. Coming up next week I’m still thinking about the relationship quote of the week from last week’s episode, #021 “The Most Important Relationship of All.” It reads, We need to remind each other of our own stories. We’ll be examining this idea next week in episode #23. I hope you tune in then. Closing In wrapping up today’s episode, may others pay forward onto you the impactful relationship stories in their life. And may you then do the same with others. And Now Here’s our Relationship Quote of the Week Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forward. - Soren Kierkegaard Well that’s it for today’s show. See you next week. Bye for now. Resources mentioned in today’s show THEM - The Richer Life Found in Caring for Others Episode #21 The Most Important Relationship of All

Bob Littell warns that millions of jobs will disappear because of technology. Old style networking is largely ineffective and unsustainable in identifying jobs that will last. He created NetWeaving, which has proven over the past 17 years that it can help people develop the “soft skills” needed to thrive in the emerging workforce. It works by building trusted, mutually supportive relationships through empathetic listening and creatively sharing resources and contacts. It is a business world application of author Catherine Ryan Hyde’s concept of Pay It Forward.

For the next couple of weeks we will be taking a second look at some of our favorite early episodes of the ParentCast. Our first in our series of classic episodes is our first conversation with Catherine Ryan Hyde, author of over 30 published books, (and many that have not made it to print as of yet). Her most famous book is Pay It Forward, an inspirational tale that launched a beloved movie and motivated a generation to perform random acts of kindness. The audio is not as great as we would have liked, and the host is extremely nervous and inexperienced, but Catherine's wisdom shines through. If you have not heard this interview already you're in luck. If you have sit back and reexperience one of our favorite guests. He has to think of a way to change the world. He comes up with an idea: "Pay it forward". M: Hmm… what's that mean? W: Oh, if you get something from people, you have to give something else to other people instead of paying it back. It's an idea for everyone to be happy. M: I see. Does "Pay it forward" really work? Remember to book early because once you've rode the Fur Bus you can't stop. Trey explained that he has grown his business exclusively through word of mouth referrals and stellar customer service and he has grand plans on expanding his Fur Bus empire. To learn more please check out Trey's website www.furbus.com Next we had on Bob Littell with Littell Consulting Services, Second Opinion Insurance Services, and The Enrichment Company where he carries the title of Chief NetWeaver. Although he wears a number of hats within the financial services industry ranging from broker and second opinion fee-paid advisor to business owners and high net worth individuals, as well to insurance companies and financial institutions, Bob's primary passion these days revolves around a word and concept he created almost a decade ago - "NetWeaving”. Bob"s 2nd book, “The Heart and Art of NetWeaving”, picks up where the first book, “Power NetWeaving”, left off and covers many of the practical appli-cations of NetWeaving - being a connector OF others, and a 'no-strings-attached’ resource provider TO others – simply with the belief that, what goes around, does come back around. The “Heart and Art of NetWeaving” book also explains how those who become NetWeaving Ambassadors, and who spread the word about this ‘win-win’ form of networking, find it not only elevates their own image in the eyes of others, but they also derive a form of energy which pours over into everything else they do. Thanks to a generous contribution from Xerox Global Services who covered the cost of printing “The Heart and Art of NetWeaving”, Bob donates 100% of the $20 per book sales price either to the Pay It Forward Foundation, created by Catherine Ryan Hyde – author of the book on which the popular movie was based, or to any non-profit who wishes to use the book for fund-raising purposes. Bob also serves on the Board of the Pay It Forward Foundation and co-chairs the steering committee.Bob’s latest book, “Raising Your R&R Factor – How Referable & Recommendable Are You?” introduces the ‘irrefutable’ “NetWeaver’s Law of Referral Reciprocity”. It helps explain why those who genuinely NetWeave for others, and yet don’t see much if anything come back around, need to look in the mirror to analyze how others actually perceive them – since referrals and recommendations represent a ‘risk’ on the part of the person making them. To help persons deal with this, Bob also conducts “WOW Workshops” to help people discover ways to be more creative and innovative, as well as to differentiate themselves and make themselves more remarkable. To learn more please go to Bob's website www.netweaving.comAlso if you know of a business in Atlanta that we should know about please email Amy Otto at Amy @ atlantabusinessradio.com and we will try and get them on the show
