In the 19th and 20th centuries, Brigham Young and other LDS church leaders taught that Jesus was begotten by God the Father in a literal sense, in the same way everyone is physically conceived. This is consistent with the broader view that God possesses a tangible, physical body. And that eternal sex and child bearing is part of the next life for those in the highest levels of the Celestial Kingdom. Church leaders at the time did not provide a detailed or explanation of the encounter between God and Mary, but implied that Christ's conception followed natural laws rather than being a nebulous, immaterial miracle. Where did this idea of a physical conception come from? Mormonish is joined by Ganesh Cherian and Master Peace to discuss the influence of polygamy (in this life and the next,) on the unique view of 19th and 20th century church leaders that Jesus was conceived by some sort of physical act between God and Mary. ***How to DONATE to Mormonish Podcast: If you would like to help financially support our podcast, you can DONATE to support Mormonish Podcast here: DONATE THROUGH DONORBOX https://donorbox.org/mormonish-podcast Mormonish Podcast is a 501(c) (3) ****WE HAVE MERCH! **** If you'd like to purchase Mormonish Merch, you can visit our Merch store here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/mormonishmerch We appreciate our Mormonish viewers and listeners so much! I'm back, and I honestly can't explain how good it feels to be here again. It's been six months since I last recorded, and a lot has happened. I'm coming to you now about five months postpartum, and for the first time in a long time, I feel like I have my life, my soul, and my body back after a really difficult pregnancy, an unexpectedly intense birth, and a postpartum season that took real time to recover from.In this episode (Part 1), I'm sharing my birth story, because I really believe birth stories are sacred. Mine didn't go the way I planned at all, and I debated whether to share it, because it's intense. I gave birth in Israel on June 16th, in the middle of a sudden war with Iran, and it was the definition of “everything out of control.” If you're currently pregnant and feel like this might be too much, it is completely okay to save this for later.I take you through the final days of pregnancy with SPD, the chaos of lockdown with two toddlers, losing my original doula plan, switching hospitals last minute, and what it was like going into labor while sirens and alerts were going off. I also share what helped me get through it in the moment, and how I've been processing it since, including the shift from anger and resentment to finally being able to draw strength from what I survived. If you've ever had a birth or postpartum experience that didn't go how you expected, I hope this helps you feel less alone. In this episode, I open up about:The moment everything changed when we went into war and life shut downLosing my original birth plan, and what it felt like to adjust in real timeAdvocating for what I wanted during labor (and what I had to let go of)Using hypnobirthing, breath, and visualization to stay grounded when everything felt chaoticTransition, nausea, pushing, and the moment I met my baby girlPostpartum in the hospital during sirens, shelters, and being moved ward-to-ward+so much moreJoin The Empowered Path to Pregnancy today for 25% off with the code CHANUKAH at checkout! In this episode, Kate talks with Kim Huynh, whose family story spans continents, generations, and a lifetime of unanswered questions. Kim first caught Kate's attention through an Instagram video where she revealed a stunning discovery: her father—born and raised in Vietnam—had finally found a biological relative through a genealogy site. The match confirmed what had long been whispered but never proven: his father was an American soldier in the Vietnam War, a man he never knew, and about whom his own mother gave no identifying information. Kim shares her father's powerful origin story and the emotional impact of uncovering a history shaped by secrecy, war, and resilience. She also tells the story of how her parents met and married in Vietnam, and how, when she was four years old, they left their homeland to start again in Kentucky, building a life that blended Vietnamese heritage with Southern American culture. How did ancient biographies narrate the births of their subjects? In this episode, Helen and Lloyd are joined in the Time Machine by Dr Caleb Friedeman, who has set out to explore how biographers described their subject's infancy. Contrary to modern readers, who often read birth account in ancient lives as works of myth and theology rather than history, Friedeman argues that ancient biographers described the births of their heroes with serious historiographic intent. As we approach Christmas, Helen and Lloyd ask Caleb what this might mean for how ancient readers viewed the stories of Jesus' birth in Matthew and Luke. Caleb T. Friedeman is David A. Case Chair of Biblical Studies at Ohio Christian University. He is the author of The Revelation of the Messiah: The Christology Mystery of Luke 1-2 and Its Unveiling in Luke-Acts (SNTSMS 181) and his new book is Gospel Birth Narratives: Reopening a Closed Case (Baylor University Press, 2025) which explores historiographical elements in ancient birth stories. What if the birth trauma you've been carrying isn't just from this lifetime? This is the first time I'm publicly sharing my birth story. After holding onto the emotions from my birth with Rui for 3.5 years, what was meant to be a planned home birth that turned into an emergency category 1 caesarean (a situation that was life threatening to both Rui and myself), the universe kept putting Shari Lyon in my path... and when I finally surrendered to doing the work with her, what we uncovered changed everything. I've never been able to openly talk about that day without crying and truthfully, I've been terrified of having a second baby. The shame, guilt, sadness, fear and grief has consumed me. But in this deeply vulnerable and transformative episode, I sit down with Shari Lyon... a leading coach, educator, and advocate for women through conception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Through Timeline Therapy and the Emotional Change Technique (ECT), Shari helped me heal at the deepest root cause level... and thanks to her work, the anxiety surrounding birth has not only been released but deeply healed, and I can now see the total perfection in the turn of events that took place. In this episode, we dive into: → Why even the most prepared women can experience birth trauma → The gap in traditional Hypnobirthing education → How Timeline Therapy works to heal emotional root causes → My experience being taken back to a past life during one of our sessions → Why your baby might be guiding you to do this healing work → How generational patterns can be passed down to our children in the womb → How to become the circuit breaker for ancestral trauma → The emotional "strings" we carry throughout our lifetime → Why healing before conception creates a clearer channel for your spirit baby About Shari Lyon: Shari Lyon is a leading coach, educator, and advocate for women through conception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. With over 13 years of experience supporting families, she brings a unique fusion of evidence-based childbirth education, therapeutic hypnosis, and trauma-informed coaching to every woman she serves. Send us a textMidwife and mother of two, Sophia Henderson, host of the Born Wild podcast, joins us to tell the story of her children's births – and how a chiropractor may have saved her newborn daughter's life.In her first pregnancy, Sophia navigated weeks of unexplained bleeding, chose home birth as a student midwife, and after giving birth learned her son had no anal opening and would ultimately be diagnosed with VACTERL association. She describes what it means to care for a medically complex baby, how quickly those diagnoses unfold after birth, and how that first year reshaped her understanding of risk, normalcy, and surgical intervention.Just as her son's medical journey was unfolding when he was just a few months old, Sophia found herself pregnant again—depleted, caring for a fragile infant, and facing new legal restrictions in California that removed home birth as an option. She entered the hospital as a confident midwife who expected to advocate for herself, only to discover how difficult it is to hold onto intuition when confronted with pressure around breech, preterm labor, and surgery. After her daughter's premature birth, Sophia and her husband were told the baby's lungs had collapsed, that there was “nothing more they could do,” and that she was unlikely to survive or at best, would require oxygen all her life. A desperate post to Facebook caught the attention of a chiropractor, who responded that she could see the issue and restore the baby to wellness. Her treatment was performed quietly after being snuck into the hospital, and led to a recovery so dramatic that it reframed Sophia's entire understanding of newborn physiology and the role of chiropractic care.Born Wild Midwifery********** Needed

In this conversation, Surabhi Shekhar, founder Gubbi Gudu, women's wellness specialist, prenatal/postnatal yoga guide, and doula-in-training joins us with her loving husband, Darshan, to share the story of their preparation for a birth center experience. They speak at length about the thorough preparation, the inner work at various crossroads, and discussions as a couple helped them arrive at their decisions and needs in this journey. Surabhi reflects on the emotional process of choosing where to birth, while Darshan brings in the partner's perspective.Their fun and interactive style of advocacy helped them collaborate with their birth center team and find a middle ground. 'Time -specific' boundaries helped them push for their needs over and over again. Knowledge became their strongest tool, helping them ask the right questions, make informed decisions, and cultivate genuine partnership with their care providers. And in a first for their birth center, their advocacy made them the first couple to physiologically birth their placenta. Have you ever wondered if the way you prepare for birth could completely change the experience? In this episode of The Wellness Effect, Kira shares her raw, unfiltered home birth story—from water breaking in a daycare bathroom to delivering baby Jake in just four hours. This isn't just a birth story; it's a testament to what happens when you spend years listening to your body, doing the inner work, and trusting your intuition over fear. Whether you're planning a home birth, hospital birth, or just curious about what's possible when you prioritize your health, this conversation will show you why preparation matters—and why birth doesn't have to be something you just "survive." In this episode, you'll hear: [00:04:46] - The four-year healing journey that prepared Kira's body and mind for this birth [00:09:34] - Why baby positioning became an obsession in the final month (and what actually mattered) [00:14:25] - What prodromal labor is and how Kira's body rehearsed for weeks before the real thing [00:18:30] - The moment everything started: water breaking in a daycare bathroom during the first snowstorm [00:31:45] - How contractions went from "mild period cramps" to "holy shit" in just hours [00:37:38] - The toilet as the "dilation station" and why sitting down changed everything instantly [00:42:30] - Using breath, sound, and the mantra "down, down, down" to work with contractions instead of against them [00:44:58] - The fetal ejection reflex: when Kira's body took over and started pushing on its own [00:47:44] - Brett catching baby Jake at home with just the doula present [00:50:47] - Why they chose to go to the hospital after the home birth for stitches and placenta delivery [00:56:06] - The shocking differences between this birth and her first: sleep, feeding, mental health, and recovery [00:58:27] - How mineral balance (especially potassium) made pregnancy insomnia disappear in the final weeks Key Takeaways: Your baby's lungs release an enzyme when they're ready to be born—that's what actually triggers labor. Your body and baby are designed to work together. Delayed cord clamping (waiting 1-2 hours) allows beneficial blood and nutrients to transfer from placenta to baby—even hospitals are starting to adopt this practice The toilet is called the "dilation station" for a reason—squatting positions can accelerate labor dramatically Want more from us?
