I honestly cannot believe I'm sitting here recording this episode as a mom. In this episode, I'm sharing the full story of Cai's birth from start to finish. The anxiety leading up to labor, the moment the hospital told me not to come because they were at capacity, the induction process, contractions, getting the epidural, and the unexpected turn that led to an emergency C-section. This experience changed my perspective on birth, control, and motherhood in ways I never could have predicted. After going through IVF and everything it took to get pregnant, I thought I had an idea of how birth would go. But labor has a way of reminding you that some things are simply out of your control. I talk about the mental side of preparing for labor, the pain and intensity of contractions, the moment I realized something wasn't right, and the emotional second I heard Cai cry for the first time. Even though things didn't go according to my original plan, the moment I saw him made every single part of the experience worth it. If you're pregnant, thinking about becoming a mom, or just curious about what birth is actually like, this episode is the full, honest story. _____ Leave Me a Message - click here! Outlouders, your usual Friday dose of Mamamia Out Loud will drop this afternoon but for now, here's a lil' treat from us to you. Enjoy. She’s 10 days on. She’s splitting her time and her heart between home and hospital, and she wants to share her story with you, Outlouders. Our beloved co-host Jessie Stephens gave birth to her boy-girl twins last week, earlier than hoped, and became a mum all over again. There will be so many of you who’ll relate to this story of terror-tinged joy, who will recognise the awe and exhaustion in Jessie’s voice, and who will want to send her so much love as she and her little family find their way through a new normal. Jessie’s rock, her twin sister Clare Stephens as well as Emily Vernem and Holly Wainwright are asking the questions:. How much time did she get “off” before the babies came? What was the first thing that happened when they did? How is Luna? How is Luca? Can she finally eat chocolate again? And how is she staying sane and hopeful? A very special episode. In this episode I sit down with a friend to talk through her birth story and the years it took to really make sense of it. We talk about the powerful influence of Free Birth Society teachings, the pressure and dogma that can exist in birth spaces, and what it was like for her to navigate a breech baby, a c-section under general anesthesia, and the long process of untangling what she had internalized about birth, autonomy, and motherhood.

Roxanne welcomes Sadie to share her first birth and postpartum experience. Sadie prepared for an unmedicated birth through extensive education (birth courses, daily podcasts/YouTube), movement/pelvic biomechanics work, breathing/hypnobirthing, and practicing counterpressure with her husband- inspiring her to later train as a doula! She chose a low-intervention hospital option in Utah called “Simply Birth,” which includes tubs and doesn't admit until 5 cm. Sadie describes her birth in great detail, as well as postpartum recovery with a second-degree perineal tear and a minor periurethral tear. Postpartum, the hardest parts were tear healing (first two weeks), fear around bathroom trips, and breastfeeding challenges (shallow latch, supply dip after 4 weeks, stress about low weight percentile, some pumping/supplementing with donated milk). Her key advice: don't let others' opinions derail your birth goals, and use education to build confidence and reduce fear.00:00 Podcast Welcome00:53 Meet Sadie01:06 Pregnancy Prep Research03:54 Choosing Birth Setting06:36 Confidence Through Education08:41 Labor Story Begins09:40 Membrane Sweep And Prep11:18 Early Labor At Home18:18 Heading To Hospital19:02 Simply Birth Admission20:27 Supportive Nurse And Tub23:30 Water Break Decision28:11 Transition Intensity30:49 Ready To Push33:42 Pushing And Nausea34:32 Nurse Support Pushing35:44 Positions And Coaching39:20 Fast Crowning Delivery42:26 Cord Placenta And Tears45:32 Stitches And Golden Hour54:33 Postpartum Breastfeeding Challenges58:19 Healing Diastasis And Care Gaps01:03:21 Next Birth Plans Advice01:04:44 Final Takeaways Thanks
Planning a hospital birth? An unmedicated birth? A water birth? Perhaps all three?! I'm sharing my CALM, positive water birth story with you today. I'm sharing everything, from the start of my labour and how I knew labour was starting, to one of the most powerful moments of my life - catching my own baby in the hospital's birth tub and meeting my baby for the first time. I used the principles of hypnobirthing, mindset, and listened to many empowering, positive birth stories (like this one!) to prepare. Listening to positive birth stories is SO helpful when you're expecting. It's one of those productive things you can do in pregnancy to prepare for birth, and show your mind what's really possible. I'm so grateful for the women who've gone before me and helped me see that positive birth experiences are not only possible - but were a possibility for me. And if it's possible for me, why not YOU?! In this episode I break down: My whole unfiltered birth story, from start to finish The mindset shifts that helped me most during labour And the single most powerful moment of my life that existed - up until that point. If you're aiming for a VBAC this pregnancy, this one is for you mama!I had a wonderful conversation with My Essential Birth Mama, Sarah. She shares how she navigated pregnancy, labor, and birth with confidence — even when things didn't go exactly as planned. We discuss everything from preparing her mindset during pregnancy to advocating during labor and embracing the beauty of her baby's arrival. This episode is full of encouragement for any mama preparing for birth...and especially for my VBAC mamas! Here are some highlights from the episode:• How Sarah prepared mentally and physically for birth during pregnancy • The mindset shifts that helped her release fear and build confidence • What early labor felt like and how she knew things were progressing • The tools she used to manage contractions naturally • How preparation helped her advocate for herself in the hospital • What it looked like to pivot peacefully when birth didn't unfold exactly as expected • The emotional moment she met her baby • Her honest postpartum reflections and what she wants every pregnant mom to knowBirth may not always go exactly according to plan — but it can still be powerful, peaceful, and empowering. I hope this story reminds you that your body was designed for this, and with the right preparation, you can walk into your birth feeling strong and ready.

Gina (perinatal fitness trainer and birth doula) and Roxanne (certified nurse midwife) share the story of Roxanne's fourth “bonus baby,” Harvey, and the end of her pregnancy leading into a planned home birth. Roxanne describes weeks of waiting, prodromal labor, and trying to start labor on her due date (January 7) before Gina left for a pre-planned Disney Marathon trip; a cervical check showed she was 1 cm and “super thick,” and labor stalled. After midnight while Gina is away, Roxanne has a gush of fluid, then contractions quickly become consistent and stronger. She calls her midwife, her mom, and backup support, and uses comfort tools like a TENS unit, shower, a Pixie heating pad, and acupressure balls. She labors in the birth tub using different positions; the midwife tries calling Gina, but she doesn't answer. Roxanne's water breaks and Harvey is born quickly in the tub, with brief pushing and no long second stage.Postpartum, Roxanne reports no tearing, no hemorrhage, less bleeding than prior births, and an easier recovery; Harvey weighs 7 lb 13 oz. In EBB 350, Krista DeYoung called in from her hospital room after weeks of inpatient monitoring for partial placental abruption. She and Dr. Rebecca Dekker had just finished a crash course on preparing for a Cesarean, not knowing that information would be needed just 30 minutes later. In this follow-up episode, Krista returns to share what happened next: the urgent decision-making, the move to labor and delivery, and the Cesarean birth that unfolded just days before her scheduled 37-week surgery. Krista walks through the physical sensations of an urgent Cesarean, the grounding techniques that helped her stay calm during surgery, and the emotional reality of recovering after major abdominal surgery. She also opens up about NICU life, bringing her baby home on oxygen, and the unexpected emotional release that came after finally leaving the hospital following more than a month of inpatient care. Today on The Natural Birth Podcast we have Kaela.Kaela is a mama of one from Australia. In today's episode she shares about her empowering and natural home birth that turned into a hospital transfer as she had a 3rd degree tear. Hospital transfers and tears are the 2 biggest fears amongst pregnant mamas and especially you who listen to this podcast. So what better way of facing those fears than by listening to a mama who had, according to herself, the most empowering birth even though she had both one of the bigger tears that only around 5% of women get and a hospital transfer from her home birth.People usually assume I think a natural birth through and through is the be all and end all because I am a huge advocate about educating about natural physiological birth and the benefits of it. But if you've listened to me for any length of time you know this is not true, and if you're a student or mentee of mine you know it even deeper.I'm all for education in pregnancy and optimizing body, mind and soul for your desired birth outcome which I believe mostly have to do with inner work, facing fears and deeply getting to know your body, baby and having a relationship with your intuition.Once the first contraction hits you are now to surrender to the great mystery of birth. And a positive birth experience is not necessarily a natural one. Not holding on to a certain outcome for your happiness is so important and trusting that there is wisdom in the way you birth even if it's not the way you wanted it. We can learn so much about ourselves, our babies, our deep hidden patterns and allow birth to awaken us, transform us and enlighten us instead of feeling like failures if it didn't end up being exactly as we wished.I love that Kaela only have positive proud feelings around her home birth where some might have felt the opposite having had a 3rd degree tear and transfer.I hope her story and how she navigated her tear and transfer is inspiring to you and also might release some fear around these two occurring in your birth.Want to work with Anna or join The Sacred Birth Worker Mentorship?Find Anna's Website, about her Mentorship & How to Work with Her, as well as all Links & Resources she mentions in the episode here:www.sacredbirthinternational.com/links-podcast
I never thought I would hear birth compared to fighting… but honestly, it might be one of my favorite analogies ever.In this episode, I'm joined by Madie — a professional fighter, dog trainer, and mom — who shares how she approached pregnancy and birth with the same mindset she brings to fight camp: strategy, mental strength, and trust in her mind and body.We talk about what it's like to navigate pregnancy when you can't workout, how she chose the right midwife, and how she learned to make intuitive decisions in labor — including whether or not to get the epidural, and how to trust her body's need for movement. I absolutely loved this conversation and the way Madie reframes birth as something you can actually train for, mentally and emotionally, not just physically. Here are some highlights from the episode: • How Madie went from professional fighter to first-time (& second-time) mom...who still fights btw! • What it was like mentally to not be able to fight or workout during pregnancy • How she chose her midwife and what to do if you're second-guessing your provider • The truth about pregnancy weight gain and why it wasn't actually a problem • Why she calls birth a “nine-month fight camp” • How she used visualization, meditation, movement, and My Essential Birth to prepare• Why she actually wanted cervical checks • How intuitive position changes helped her baby move into a better position • How My Essential Birth supported her through pregnancy and labor • Her best advice for moms (and dads… especially dads
So, I have some news. Since the last time we recorded, I had a baby!!! And trigger warning: I have an extremely low pain threshold; therefore, this is probs not an accurate representation of many birth stories. I was, quote, "literally dying" at 1cm dilated. Next week... Linda's (unmedicated) birth story!

Long before labor begins, the stories we hear about birth are already shaping our expectations and choices. In this episode, Dr. Rebecca Dekker talks with Lisa Greaves Taylor, founder of Birth Matters NYC Childbirth Education, director of the East River Doula Collective, and host of the Birth Matters podcast, about the power of birth stories as tools for education, healing, and self-advocacy. Drawing from her work supporting families in New York City since 2010, Lisa shares how storytelling helps birthing people move beyond fear-based narratives and reconnect with their intuition, confidence, and voice. Together, Rebecca and Lisa explore the realities of giving birth in NYC—including high rates of induction, limited access to midwifery and birth centers, and postpartum support gaps—while also highlighting reasons for hope, advocacy, and change. They also talk about how birth stories can support preparation during pregnancy, help process trauma after difficult births, and empower families navigating VBAC, repeat pregnancies, and systemic barriers to evidence-based care. In this episode, Kate talks with Kim Huynh, whose family story spans continents, generations, and a lifetime of unanswered questions. Kim first caught Kate's attention through an Instagram video where she revealed a stunning discovery: her father—born and raised in Vietnam—had finally found a biological relative through a genealogy site. The match confirmed what had long been whispered but never proven: his father was an American soldier in the Vietnam War, a man he never knew, and about whom his own mother gave no identifying information. Kim shares her father's powerful origin story and the emotional impact of uncovering a history shaped by secrecy, war, and resilience. She also tells the story of how her parents met and married in Vietnam, and how, when she was four years old, they left their homeland to start again in Kentucky, building a life that blended Vietnamese heritage with Southern American culture.
